Toshiba nb205

I bought a new toshiba nb205 and it's a great little netbook. Everything seems to work for the most part with my arch install but It needs a little tweaking. First I don't understand why alsa won't work with the internal speaker but will work with an external or headphones. I've installed oss to be able to get sound out of the speaker but now it won't turn the speaker off when using headphones. Not really a big deal I decided to just leave alsa and use the headphones when I want to hear sound since I really don't need to hear sound on it often. I'm just curious to why it doesn't work right when it detects the hardware propperly. I read somewhere about the new kernel .32 fixing this but it doesn't seem to work for me.
Also I was wondering if anyone had any luck getting the blue tooth to work or the hotkeys. It works ok with the brightness buttons but doesn't seem to work with some of the others. fortunately the ones I use alot like the home/end keys work.
Last thing is I can't seem to get it to start up again after having it suspend or hibernate. I just get a black screen although the computer is obviously starting again.
Sorry for writing a novel for this post but I really like this netbook and love arch. I have Arch on all my other systems with no issues and would like to get as much working as possible. I also plan to write an install guide once I get everything working since there is very little documentation on any toshiba netbooks using linux. Some posts on the ubuntu forums but thats about it. Any help would be appreciated.
Also was wondering if its possible to get the hard drive protection feature to work. Looks like its something toshiba has with all of their notebooks but haven't seen anything about this on the web involving linux. So maybe not possible but if anyone has any information about this I'd really appreciate. it.

I was reading about the sound issue on the web and I read that up untill kernel 2.6.26-7 the sound works fine with alsa but any kernel version after and all sound works except the internal speaker. Seems strange that an older kernel would work better than a newer one. Maybe theres a way I can patch the newer kernel or do something else to get this working other than installing oss.

*update 2*
After drinking a scotch and playing around with the configs I found a solution. It makes all sound options work perfectly and was much easier than messing with the kernel. Heres what I did.
Step 1:
sudo touch /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
Step 2:
sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
Step 3: add this line to sound.conf
options snd-hda-intel model=auto
(you could also put model=toshiba)
Step 4: reboot and have sound working correctly on the toshiba nb205
Hope this could help someone who's had as frustrating a time as I have.

Toshiba NB205 Error message F3-FF00-0006, Please Help!

I need help. My toshiba NB205 is not working. When I turn it on it goes to a black screen that give me two options Launch start up repair or start normally. If I choose the startup normally it brings me back to the the same screen. If I choose Launch start up repair it goes to a black screen and only my cursor is on there. I tried going into safe mode and doing the recovery but nothing works. It always brings me back to this black screen. I even tried pressing Alt-Ctrl-Del and after trying a bunch of other things it brought me to a black screen and then weird codes came up on the screen like "Realtek RTL8101E etc. PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM. This product is covered by one or more of the following patents, etc." and it says a bunch of other stuff and it keeps repeating it. I read in other forums that Im supposed to get into the BIO but I need step by step directions on how to do that cause when I went into the start up (by pressing F2) I didnt know what to do. Well, after pressing Launch star up repair and I left it for several minutes at the black screen to see if anything will happen and then after a long time a pop up message came and it said Error: F3-FF00-0006. Failed to get the ID of the specified partition. Press ok to turn off the computer. When I pressed ok, it turned off the computer and when I turned it on again i took me to the black screen with the two options Launch start up repair or start normally. Ahhh it's so frustrating and all my school work is on this laptop. Please if you can help me.. please let me know what to do..thanks. Oh, and I don't know what could have caused this problem. Yesterday the computer kept freezing up and it was really slow and once it even shut down for no reason but I could start it up after. But today it's not working properly.

do you have same model computer? Are all the same things occuring with your computer as the op's? If not, then start your own thread and start from the beginning. If much of the OP's issue(s) are the same as your you can always link to this thread if there is a reason to do so.

Crossing HP Pavilion laptop with Vista to Toshiba NB205-N210 with XP? Usefulness of Bluetooth.

Is there a conflict in crossing over files from HP Pavilion laptop with Vista to Toshiba NB205-N210 with XP? Is Bluetooth necessary (or useful) on a Toshiba? I have Bluetooth on my Hp Pavilion.

A crossover network cable is one that is designed to connect two computers to each other through the LAN port without using a router. It sounds like you don't have any sort of home network to work from or have any experience in networking. Instead of wasting a lot of time posting methods that you might not be able to use why don't you start by telling us what networking methods you have available, if any.
Also, do you have an external USB hard drive? That might be easier to use for this.
Lastly, how much data are we talking about? That would have a large bearing on how we should go about this.

Power Supply on Toshiba NB205-N325BN

My question is on the battery. Once I have it fully charged should I unplug the power supply and run it until it needs to be charged again or should I leave it plugged in. Will leaving it plugged in damage the battery?

Once it's fully charged if you are going to be using it for a long time then remove the battery and run it on the AC alone. Batteries have a limited amount of charge/recharge cycles so the more you run it on the battery alone the sooner the battery will wear out. They also can be worn out by constantly charging them when they are fully charged. When the battery is fully charged the only time I run with the battery installed is when I'm performing a bios update, system recovery, or some specific task where I simply can not take a chance of the system shutting down accidently.

Just bought Toshiba NB205-N325BL

Okay I just bought the netbook mentioned in the subject area and it has the windows 7 starter on it I havent even opened it yet but from what I understand is that it is just the starter and I will have to pay the 80 bucks to get the full version........... Okay my question is can I wipe the hard drive clean and install XP home and still be able to use all the functions of the netbook? If so can anyone let me know how to install XP on this and if I need different drivers and what not I really dont want to run 7 I have used them all and I like XP the best.........

I have checked the Toshiba US page and there I can find your notebook model. The download section on the page shows all drivers only for Windows 7. For Vista and XP it shows not all drivers so I assume your notebook is only Windows 7 supported.
If you want XP you have to collect the drivers on external websites.
But another thing: In the last days I have tried Windows 7 and I must say Im very satisfied with Microsoft OS. In my opinion its better then Vista. :)

Toshiba NB205-N325BL- XP install?

Okay I just purchased the the netbook in the subject line and it came with the Windows 7 starter OS and I was wondering if anyone knew if I could wipe the hard drve clean and install XP and if doing so I can have all functionality when doing so or if I need certain drivers and where I can get the drivers if so and even some kind of walk through of how to install XP on the netbook I have never owned one just got a pretty good deal on it.........

Okay well what do I need to do to start the 7 install and how do I know when to stop it to fix boot order? and will I do this before I install XP or after? I am kind of scared of Screwing it up It has been a while since I have messed with a computer this in depth and even then it was 98 xp erra...... Maybe if someone would be willing to get on messenger or something to guide me through the process would help???? That would be awsome!! I will get back on here tomorrow evening after work and maybe someone would do that for me........ Another setback may be that I have my copy of XP on an old computer so not sure if MS will let me install it on my toshiba without it being a hassle........ I dont use the old computer though......... Oh another question is would I still have to buy the full version of 7 anyways? if so I may just stick with 7 if the ram usage is relatively low and not affect video playback and whatnot.............

NB205 - very poor product and service, do not buy Toshiba!! Completely dead in 6 months

I am posting this to warn as many people as possible to avoid buying Toshiba in the future. Not only was the product faulty, which I can understand sometimes happens w mass production. But the service was completely unacceptable, which was the deciding factor for me.
1. My new Netbook NB-205/BL started intermittently shutting down for no reason (complete black screen, not even to blue screen). By the time I returned home from my trip it had stopped working altogether. The power light will come on, and the fan/hard disk will try to spin for a split second and then go silent and stop completely.
2. Upon calling tech support who walked me through a bunch of diagnostic attempts (removing and re-inserting battery, etc.), they concluded it was dead and I needed to send it in.
3. The only thing I really care about is my data as I had stored a bunch of invaluable photos and downloaded about $200 worth of Amazon MP3s since receiving the Toshiba NB205.
4. Tech support assured me they would back up the hard drive for me and ship either a fixed or new computer with all my data still intact. They asked me to register it w their warranty department and call them back so they could send me a shipping box to send it back in. I did all that and it's been >3 weeks and no box.
5. So today I called Tech Support again and the guy goes "Oh yes, you have shipped your computer in for a hard drive failure?". At which point I had to explain how A) it's not a hard drive failure B) I haven't shipped anything anywhere because I never got the box I was promised.
6. Then I proceed to ask him again if my data would be safe, to which he informs me it's Toshiba policy/practice not to back up data for customers. I found this to be unacceptable and then I didn't know who to trust so I asked for a supervisor.
7. This supervisor wasn't able to help me either as he further informed me that they will not back anything up for me AND that I had to pay for shipping AND pay an authorized Toshiba Repair Center to back my hard drive up.
8. I suggested what everyone who I've talked to has said: Toshiba could send me a new computer since they've diagnosed the old one as being dead. I could swap out the hard drives, or they could send me one without a hard drive. And I could send them back the dead NB205.
9. NO was the answer. Toshiba wouldn't do anything for me, because software issues are NOT under warranty. And backing up my hard drive is considered to be a software issue. I repeatedly told him that it's their defective hardware that is causing the need for data backup. But this went ignored and I was told they don't cover anything in this case.
I either had to lose my data or pay probably $100 for a Toshiba dealer to back up my data for me. Oh yeah, and there isn't one of those within 20 miles of me and I live in Silicon Valley!! Oh yes, and they want me to pay to ship them the dead computer.
10. I finally asked him how he would feel if he was the customer, and if he felt this was any way to treat Toshiba customers. He replied by saying they have a process, and this is the process!
Well the next time I and any of you are in our "process" of deciding which brand of technology to buy, I'm certainly not going to consider Toshiba anymore. This is the second chance I'm giving Toshiba after having a very poor laptop AND service experience in 2000. Well, it took me 9 years to give them another shot, and I'm never going to trust them again. I told myself "well, it's a high quality Japanese brand, one that commands a premium in price that people are willing to pay so it should be an excellent product. AND if things do go pooryly, Toshiba will stand behind their name."
I was SO wrong!!! Let this be a message to all people out there, as I did read these forums before buying my product, but the NB205 was so new it didn't have many posts.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me! I'm done with you Toshiba, it's really too bad that you will not honor your brand with fair treatment of your customers.

As for Toshiba backing up your data, ALL of the manufacturer's have that same policy. NONE of them will backup the data for you nor will they guarantee that your system will be returned with the existing data intact. This is spelled out in the Warranty documents and is fairly common knowledge amongst most computer users.
If the data was that important you should have been backing it up to USB flash drives, a usb external hard drive, or some other backup device on a daily basis just for this very reason. The fact that you failed to do so doesn't make it Toshiba's problem.

NB205-310: How to turn off Wlan with Windows 7?

hey community,
i recently installed win 7 on my toshiba nb205-310. works fine, however the combination FN +F8 (turn on/off) wlan does not work. a message pops up saying that there is no such device even though i have wlan connection.
Also where did the toshiba power management go?
i installed all the Toshiba win7 drivers.

1st - Try to disactivate your WLan card in your Windows Seven settings. It's work.
If you can't, reinstall your WLan driver + your Value Added Package from Toshiba driver support web site.
After it, you'll be able to use the [FN] key to disactivate or activate Wifi and/or bluetooth (both, or separately).

NB205 - Weird CPU usage, very slow even after system reinstall.

Hello dear Forum,
I have a problem with my Toshiba NB205, the CPU usage while moving; dragging for ex. an explorer window, jumps to almost 30% and it lags pretty much (which I guess is not pretty normal) also while watching a YouTube video (360p) on full screen the frame rate is not higher than 5.
I have a fresh Windows 7 Starter system installed on it, I moved from Windows XP because of the Weelsof virus that attacked the computer, but even before the attack it was very slow, it took very long to open a folder window.
I formatted the all the partitions (including System Reserved) except the "HDD-Recovery".
I am not owner, nor the main user of this laptop, so I don't when it became so slow, but as far as I remember it worked perfect at the beginning without any bigger problems.

NB205 wont turn on - Please help

No useful support has been offered for his question yet so I posted my question here. I hope someone can help me solve this problem.
In the last week my Toshiba NB205 has had trouble turning on. When I turn it off I would take several attempts to turn it back on. Naturally, I avoided the problem as best I could. This morning I have been unable to get my notebook to turn on at all. Please help.
To help make my problem as clear as possible. The battery does hold a charge and is charged. The power cord is connected and plugged into a live outlet. When my the NB205 boots into Windows everything seems to work as expected. The only problem is getting this POS to turn on. (Forgive the language.)

I had the same problem this morning. I found this on another site (Fixit) and it worked for me. - Kathy

2.take out the battery
3.hold down the power button for 20 seconds (doing this drains any excess power fron the unit)
4.put battery back in
5.plug in laptop
6.try to turn it on

NB205-N325BL gaming

Few weeks ago i bought toshiba NB205-N325BL. Got to say it is very good for its price and performance.
So i tried out its gaming.
I played Rise of Nations, but the problem is that game needs bigger resolution for monitor.
So it keeps giving this error, becouse monitor is to small:
*Rise of Nations cannot run with monitor display set to 256 colors. Please change monitor display to 16-bit or greater*.
I tested my home monitor and it worked it out fine and game runned out pretty good.
Notebook screen: 1024, 600
game minimum screen: 1024, 768
My os: Windows 7
So my problem is. Is it possible to run game with smaller monitor than game requires?

Please don't understand me wrong but I don't think Toshiba is right address for this question.
Ask people who have created this game.
As I understand you small NB has enough power for game running so the question is for Microsoft.
By the way: NB200/205 is not designed for gaming. You know what I mean?

NB205 completely freezes and clock stops

I have an aforementioned Toshiba NB205-N312, completely stock and less than 6 months old. After about three months of use, the computer began to completely freeze, and the clock stops. The only thing that corrects the issues is to "hard power-down" by holding the power button until the computer shuts down. On restart, everything works great until the next lockup, anywhere from 5 to 60 minutes down the road. I've seen another post for something similar that suggests a CMOS battery problem or bad RAM (again, completely stock here). Anything I can do to point the finger at one or the other without spending $$ to randomly replace stuff? Thanks!

I am getting the same symptoms (freeze, clock stop, hard boot required) AND all the Event Logs have nothing within 8 minutes of the freeze. I have updated drivers, bios, etc. I am a bit stymied at this time. It can happen within minutes of being turned on or after hours of use. No pattern there that I can see. Just turned off the HDD protection feature since the freeze seems to happen less frequently when I am sitting with it stable on the desk than when my wife is on the couch with it on her lap. I know reaching on that theory. I'll give it some time.
One characteristic is that each time it happens we get a rectangular light red rectangular block at wherever the cursor is at the moment. The cursor need NOT be in motion. It happens just sitting and looking at some web page.
I keep telling myself, "I gotta be smarter than it" but so far I have not proven that to be true.
UPDATE: I have experienced the lockup only twice since I turned off the HDD protection feature and those were immediately after I made the change. It has been used quite a bit since then so I remain optimistic, but I must admit I cannot explain why there would be those two lockups if this really is the avoidance to the lockup problem. I remain hopeful that I am starting to get smarter than it. Will see. ThE

General Maintenance of an old Toshiba Notebook NB 205

My Toshiba NB205 mini-notebook is running fine after I fixed a few problems over the years. I've had it for over 4 years now.
I would like to keep it that way. Could you kindly tell me what would be best as far as regular maintenance so I keep it that way for a while?
It has 2gb ram only, I guess that's the only upgrade I can do anymore. And so, I do want to stay away from things that would take away from its power.

Nb205 hard disk annoying vibration

Just got out of the box my new nb205-n310 and this came with one annoying hard disk vibration that propagate to the entire case of the netbook.
I am sure that is the hard disk because when I move the netbook the vibration sensor halts the spin of the hard disk then the vibration cease for seconds.
Some advice?.

Ok thanks but the hard disk is working well but the vibration is there.
