Toshiba netbook

Recently purchased a used netbook (mod. # NB305-N410BN) which has Windows 7 installed and made a mistake and let someone borrow it. When I got it back I tried to get on the laptop and couldn't. A message comes up saying the HDD/SSD User Password Status is locked. Is there any way to bypass this message. I am not able to do anything at all on the laptop. I have no recovery disc.

  • Compaq Laptop Model: CQ56-115DX versus Toshiba Netbook Model: NB505-N500BL

I'm looking to see which one of these is best on performance only since I know the laptop is bigger then the netbook. Both are the same price. It seems like the Compaq would be a no brainer until you read the reviews on each. Toshiba has better reviews by far even though the Compaq looks more powerful from the specs. This would mainly be used for web browsing and facebook gaming. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hello,
Best Buy has brought your posting to my attention as you would like to purchase from Best Buy the HP CQ56-115DX versus a Toshiba netbook.   I am pleased to know that you are interested in purchasing an HP notebook.  HP is very proud of its line of products which its reps are encouraged to promote without criticizing its competitors.   The two products are different.  Do want a notebook or a netbook?  Redwyv provides a valuable posting of the pros and cons in:
    http://www.forums.bestbuy.com/t5/Computers-Home-Networking/Help-What-laptop-is-right-for-me/m-p/2815...
You will see in the above link, the similarly priced HP Mini Netbook, Model 210.
And as Redwyv has stated in this posting, you do have 14 days to return the product to Best Buy.
Based on your posting, I probably shouldn't distract you from your two choices as it appears you have already done your own research and have narrowed down your choice based primarily on price.  I am sure you have noticed the significant difference in screen size and memory.  You mentioned doing some Facebook gaming.  The fact that you specified "Facebook gaming" indicates you are aware of the requirements for more "intensive" (for lack of a better word) gaming.
You do comment that the HP laptop is certainly more powerful, but you have read negative reviews.  There are also some very strong reviews for the CQ56-115DX.  You can find a summary of reviews at:
    http://www.zdnet.com/reviews/product/laptops/compaq-presario-cq56-115dx-v-series-v140-23-ghz-156-tft...
Let me know if you need additional information.

  • Hello, I have a Toshiba netbook with i-tunes loaded, when I go into import settings and choose MP3,instead of AAC, it defaults back to AAC when I leave the diaglogue box.

Hello, I have a Toshiba Netbook that I just put i-tunes on and when I go into import settings, I want to change it to MP3, but when I leave the dialogue box, it defaults back to AAC. What am I missing?   Thanks.

I wonder if I'm missing that OK because the screen on this netbook is smaller  than a laptop and only supports 1024 X 600. I can't scroll that box up any, and can't grab the top and move it up. So when I exit that box I have to click the x in the top right corner.
Acck. Yes, that'll be the issue. There's an OK and a Cancel down at the bottom of the screen.
This is going to seem a weird suggestion, but it's the only thing that is springing to mind at the moment ... Do you know someone with an external monitor, or a TV that supports PC input? If so, try temporarily attaching the netbook to that. Can you do the preference change on the larger monitor?

  • Toshiba Netbook unable to restore from USB

My Toshiba NetBook NB505-N500 would not boot and recovery failed,  so I ordered recovery media on USB.  Now I see  I do not have option to select USB to boot from. Only HDD/SDD, FDD or LAN.  What can I do?  If I delete hard drive will that work?
    Please help.

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
Your BIOS is trying to boot from a network. LAN should be at the bottom of the priority list.
Unless you have messed up the boot priority while fooling around in there, it means access to the hard drive has been lost. And that most often means the hard drive has failed.
Perhaps a failing hard drive was your problem to begin with.

  • 10.1-Inch Toshiba Netbook NB305-N600

I was thinking of buying a new computer. I really just need it for web browsing. Updating my music and my itunes on it. And occasionally sending emails and doing minor work realted stuff. Not looking for anything too expensive, just something simple and effeceint. Does anyone know anything about this computer, 10.1-Inch Toshiba Netbook NB305-N60. Or any other computer that would be good for these few uses.

If you haven't noticed, netbooks are being phased out with tablets and the upcoming ultrabooks.
the biggest reason is the start up time.  15 minutes when you factor in the virus checkers updating itself.
    tablets offer instant start.
another factor is the small screen... there's a lot of scrolling compared to a larger screen.
I strongly recommend going to the store and asking for a demo on a restart.  Take a stop watch with you.  Add an additional 5 minutes for the virus checker to complete updating itself.
I love my Netbook.... when it's running Ubuntu....  it starts up in 30 seconds!

  • Can't activate my Toshiba NETBOOK on the new 3G Netbook $30/2Gig Data PlanI'

I'm sorry, but THIS one has to be the epitomy of corporate incompetence and technical ignorance that I have ever seen. On the broadband data plan web page, there is now a check box in the 3G Netbooks column for the $30/2Gig plan. I have a Toshiba NB-205 currently on the grandfathered $39.99/250 Meg plan (which is a crappy deal to say the least,, but couldn't justify $60 for 5 Gig i didn't need) so naturally I was delighted to see this plan appear and tried to change to it online. No dice. Only 5 Gig/10 Gig plans available. Went to store. They couldn't add it either but agreed I should be able to have it.
Called Customer Care. CSR couldn't add it. So he called me back and said I didn't qualify for the plan. Why? Because my "device" had an "embedded card" in it.. Doh!! Well, for Verizon's benefit, pssstttt....3G netbooks have embedded modems in them. 3G NOTEbooks too. Usb modems, data cards, Mi-Fi's, and even TABLETS have embedded modems in them.
Apparently they are trying to obfuscate data plan upsells by fragmenting the data plans between NETbooks and NOTEbooks (with embedded dards) and apparently my NETbook does not qualify as a NETbook under this new 3Gig plan. And the simple fact is, I don't WANT the 5 Gig plan.
The CSR also mumbled something about ny not having bought it from Verizon, so apparently THAT diqualified me too.
This is getting REALLY bad folks. Public sentiment concerning these new tiered plans, tethering charges on the capped data plans, and Verizon's notoriously high prices are generating an IMMENSE amount of negative publicity in the blogosphere.
I don't expect any resolution of this issue, as Verizon can, of course, disqualify anything they want from any plan they offer for whatever cock-and-bull reason they can cook up, but this is apallingly idiotic, and a gross insult to the intelligence of anyone who knows the difference between a notebook and a netbook, which for the sake of broandband usage, is no difference at all.

I'm in St Louis, MO and having the same issues.  I've spoken with Apple on the phone twice, At&t once and they were supposed to call me back with a solution and have not called back.  I went into the Apple store and they changed out my new ipad3 for another new ipad3, but I overheard the manager tell the tech that was helping me to stop doing that because it won't make a difference.  Evidently, there's something not working correctly here and it's affecting a lot of people.  Of course, Apple is saying it's an At&t problem...At&t is saying it's an ipad problem. Just curious...are all of the users that are having problems with the 3G/4G connection with the ipad3 working with At&t?  Or, are we seeing this with other carriers, too?
I've turned off the LTE (as noted in posts above) and will give that a try to see if it at least allows me to have a connection when I'm away from my wi-fi.
Between this and charging issues...I'm now wondering if I jumped the gun too quickly in getting the ipad3.  I'm appreciating my ipad1 right now and it's lack of issues for the past two years.

  • How do I install an OS on a Toshiba NB305?

I just bought a Toshiba Netbook 305 Model No. N442BL  and they wiped it "clean" including the windows 7 starter that was supposed to be on it.  The guy says I have to install my own OS but I have no clue how to do that.
There's no F8 option to get into "safe mode" like my laptop.
I do have windows 7 on a USB drive but it won't read it when I tell it to boot from the USB.
I'm so confused and have been trying to do this on my own for two days.  Any help is greatly appreciated.
Also, please let me know if you need additional information.  I wasn't sure what to include.
    thanks!

Restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media. All the drivers and utilities are properly preinstalled. Windows is preactivated.
If you failed to create recovery media, you can obtain it from Toshiba. Scroll down to Get Recovery Media here. Order it on a flash drive for convenience.
For instructions, see the section Restoring from recovery DVDs/media, which begins on p. 62 of the User's Guide.

  • Wireless works for Toshiba but not IPAD

  • Toshiba nb205

    Hi
I bought a new toshiba nb205 and it's a great little netbook. Everything seems to work for the most part with my arch install but It needs a little tweaking. First I don't understand why alsa won't work with the internal speaker but will work with an external or headphones. I've installed oss to be able to get sound out of the speaker but now it won't turn the speaker off when using headphones. Not really a big deal I decided to just leave alsa and use the headphones when I want to hear sound since I really don't need to hear sound on it often. I'm just curious to why it doesn't work right when it detects the hardware propperly. I read somewhere about the new kernel .32 fixing this but it doesn't seem to work for me.
Also I was wondering if anyone had any luck getting the blue tooth to work or the hotkeys. It works ok with the brightness buttons but doesn't seem to work with some of the others. fortunately the ones I use alot like the home/end keys work.
Last thing is I can't seem to get it to start up again after having it suspend or hibernate. I just get a black screen although the computer is obviously starting again.
Sorry for writing a novel for this post but I really like this netbook and love arch. I have Arch on all my other systems with no issues and would like to get as much working as possible. I also plan to write an install guide once I get everything working since there is very little documentation on any toshiba netbooks using linux. Some posts on the ubuntu forums but thats about it. Any help would be appreciated.
Also was wondering if its possible to get the hard drive protection feature to work. Looks like its something toshiba has with all of their notebooks but haven't seen anything about this on the web involving linux. So maybe not possible but if anyone has any information about this I'd really appreciate. it.
    Thanks
    *update*
I was reading about the sound issue on the web and I read that up untill kernel 2.6.26-7 the sound works fine with alsa but any kernel version after and all sound works except the internal speaker. Seems strange that an older kernel would work better than a newer one. Maybe theres a way I can patch the newer kernel or do something else to get this working other than installing oss.

    *update 2*
After drinking a scotch and playing around with the configs I found a solution. It makes all sound options work perfectly and was much easier than messing with the kernel. Heres what I did.
    Step 1:
    sudo touch /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
    Step 2:
    sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
Step 3: add this line to sound.conf
    options snd-hda-intel model=auto
    (you could also put model=toshiba)
Step 4: reboot and have sound working correctly on the toshiba nb205
Hope this could help someone who's had as frustrating a time as I have.

  • Lost password to user account and cannot get into Netbook

We purchased a Toshiba Netbook nb200 for our teenager for Christmas.
She was so excited to get it and was on the computer right away and set up her own user account without writing it down or allowing me time to create a disk for her.
Now the user account will not let us in. She says she knew what the password was and when we try it, it does not work. We have spent two days typing everything under the sun to see if we can get it and no luck.
2 days after Christmas and she cannot get into the computer at all.
I have tried the safe mode etc and does not work.
Any suggestions on what to do please?
    Thank you.

    Try This....
To recover the original factory image using the utilities on your computer??s internal storage drive:
    1. Make sure the computer is turned off.
    2. Press and hold the 0 (zero) key on your keyboard while powering on the computer.
    3. If your system offers a choice of Windows® 7 32-bit or 64-bit operating system, select one at this time. If not, skip to step 4.
    4. A warning screen appears, stating that when the recovery is executed all data will be deleted and rewritten.
Click Yes to continue. Follow the instructions to do a complete restore....

  • Needs help in creating Toshiba XP recovery cd to USB flash drive(stick)

    Hello,
    I am using a Toshiba netbook 100
Operating system - XP home Edition.
    No optical drive included.
    There's extra hardrive in netbook
I need help how to create a
Toshiba XP recovery CD to USB flash.
(this file is big-- 7.7GB !!)
the primary boot order is set to USB Memory
There is a guide at this link
    http://www.gtkdb.de/index_7_544.html
but it is for ubuntu Operating system
and besides it so "techy" for me to understand.
I will be much grateful for a simplified version
I have tried to use some applications
    like:
    - IsotoUSB
    - UNetbootin, Universal Netboot Installer--
    - YUMI (Your Universal Multiboot Installer)..
    - Xboot - Multiboot USB/ISO utility (have not done yet)
I was not successful in creating a recovery CD to USB
    in ISOtoUSB and UNetbootin.
YUMI utility, however, has successfully created a USBflash recovery
but my netbook did not respond.
By the way, I was able to reformat this netbook by using
another XP oem--for temprary reasons as
I cannot extract the XP from Toshiba recovery CD.
I am very grateful if there is some who can
help me how to create a
Toshiba XP recovery CD to USB flash.
    Kind regards

  • Patch for Toshiba nb305 controlling fn screen brightness

    kernel patch is available here:
    https://bugzilla.kernel.org/attachment.cgi?id=27236
it works and it is safe (tested) against: 2.6.34.x 2.6.35.x and zen (remember to backup drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915_opregion.c if using git)

    Do you like it?
yes, it suits the purpose: photo editing while on the trip (good battery life).
I had to customize a lot of things. This did not take much time but with Toshiba you are on your own as most users have Acer netbooks or AOpen and there is Arch wiki help for these, while Toshiba netbook does not have wiki entry.
The only thing that does not work is suspend to RAM (kernel unable to handle dynamic CPU settings in BIOS), however suspend to disk works very well and system wakes up in less that 5s so I do not miss suspend to RAM very much.
