Toshiba qosmio F20 Keeps Freezing

Ok, I am no computer expert but I can generally get by and half know my way around a computer.
I bought a Qosmio F20 around 3.5yrs ago and it has been a real trooper. I ran the machine ragged since I bought the thing and it has only just started to let me down.
The machine started freezing up around 2 months ago, I would turn it on and if I got passed the windows screen onto the desktop after a while it would just freeze and then the fan would start going mental until I turned it off.
Firstly I got all the stuff I needed from the HD and then restored back to factory settings. Did not work started freezing again.
Must be a hardware problem right?
Just another note, the battery is knackered and works for like 20 seconds.
Any advice would be great guys, all in all I know I have to buy a new laptop soon but I am quite fond of this one and can't afford a new one yet.
Thanks

Yuo should test the hard drive and memory for the freezing problem. Batteries generally start to degrade after a year or so. Run "Drive Fitness Test" on the hard drive and "Memtest86" on the memory.

    Hi Master G,
    Thnx for you suggestions.
I dont use Nokia PC Suite.
I contacted the Toshiba Tech Support. They suggested me to tested the laptop removing the battery & using only adapter power and if problem still persists, try using only battery. My laptop froze in both! :'(
Now they are recommending changing the RAM & trying it out!
Yes i do have the "Toshiba Fingerprint Utility"
How would i update the BIOS?
And how can i find out what Version of the iRST driver i've got?
    Thanks again.

It is not easy to say why this happen but I think it is definitely software related issue.
I don't know how many experience do you have with operating systems and are you ready to search for problem or you want to fix this quickly.
If you want fast fix use Toshiba recovery disc and install OS again. With clean preinstalled operating system everything should be OK again.
Otherway follow instructions I found on the internet:
I have few steps here that might fix the issue.
First, I suggest that you boot the computer in safe mode and check; safe mode starts Windows with a limited set of files and drivers. Startup programs do not run in safe mode, and only the basic drivers needed to start Windows are installed, follow the steps to boot the computer in safe mode with networking:
A.) To restart the computer in Safe Mode, restart the computer and tap the F8 key for about four to five times. You will see Safe Mode listed in the Windows Advanced options. Select Safe Mode and then press enter.
Now check if you are able to work with your programs, if you are able to boot the computer in safe mode then the problem might be with any of the start-up items conflicting on your computer.
B.) You may have to perform clean boot on the computer, to help troubleshoot error messages and other issues, you can start Windows Vista by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.
The following link has steps showing how to perform clean boot: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
    1) Perform clean boot (Check the link for Performing clean boot)
    2) Enable half of the services
    3) Determine whether the problem returns
    4) Enable half of the startup items
    5) Determine whether the problem returns
    6) Repeat the above steps until you find out which service or program is causing the issue
After you determine the startup item or the service that causes the problem, contact the program manufacturer to determine whether the problem can be resolved. Or, run the System Configuration Utility, and then click to clear the check box for the problem item.
Note: Please ensure that the computer is set to start as usual by following the step 7 from the article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
If the issue still persists, I suggest that you perform a System File Checker [SFC] scan on the computer, this replaces corrupted system files with the Version of Windows system files on the computer, follow the steps to perform a scan:
I would suggest you to empty the temp folder and later follow the steps below:
    i. Click Start>>type %temp% in the search box>>press enter>>delete everything present in the temp folder.
    1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
    2. Right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue
    3. At the command prompt, the following line, and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow
When the scan is complete, test to see whether the issue that you are experiencing is resolved.

  • Toshiba a500 18x keeps freezing ! [HELP]

    Hi!
    I have a problem :/
My computer just keeps freezing.. I own a Toshiba a500 18x bought in last christmas, I had experienced several bsods with this jmcr.sys, but i fixed that... but now i'm having several "freezes" latelly.
The Bsods stoped but this freeze thing is really annoying, the computer is normal and than just starts slowing down and the sound just becomes like crackling, like a tv untuned.. and then it just freezes you can't do anything, you can't mouse your mouse or write, you only hear the crackling sound.
I don't know what to do.. i've searched in lots of forums, I updated the card reader's driver, the BIOS driver, the sound driver, the graphic card's drive several times...
I sended my computer to toshiba like... 2 month ago because of the jmcr.sys bsods, and it came back with the same problem, the computer started to brake, like slowing down and than the crackling sound started and then bsod :/
I used the recovery disc too... but nothing!
I would be very appreciated if someone could help me!
    Thanks

I can't even go to youtube it just freezes...
That's better than intermittent. You can make experiments.
    1. Does the same thing happen when you boot into Safe Mode with Networking?
Advanced startup options (including safe mode)
    2. Does the same thing happen when you boot normally into another account?

  • Qosmio F60 keeps freezing up

Ok Im getting desperate here, I really dont want to get my F60 repaired.
Ive had it for about 2 weeks now, and it constantly freezes.
It freezes mainly when I put the thing to sleep. It also freezes sometimes when booting up, waking up, switching users and when I put it into hibernation mode.
There isnt very much software on the machine, theres a few games, AVG, firefox and not much else.
So I thought Id try the Toshiba utility PC Diagonostic Tool. It wont work not matter what, it will always freeze up the computer.
What actually happens is, when I put the computer to sleep, Windows 7 shuts down to a black screen, the screen goes black (but does not turn off), and the fans start booting up and spinning. The power light stays on, and I can push the volume buttons and they make sounds.
I cant do anything else though, it just stays black, and wont turn off, and I have to hold down the power button to get it to turn off.
I installed all my programs the first week I had it, and it was working fine.
The only thing Ive done since was change the power settings, but I changed them numerous times since to try to get it working again and it doesnt. Ive also ran a Windows update (for the first time) after the problem was happening to see if that fixed it. It comes up with no updates in the Toshiba utility.
Windows start up repair cant fix it or find anything wrong, and using system restore does nothing either.
Is there anything I should do or know before I go back to the shop?
The only other thing I have to mention is that it takes Windows 7 ages to start up.
Not the booting process, but when you log into the OS it takes about 5 minutes to load all the components up, I usually have to wait a few minutes for it to even connect to my Wifi, it starts up in the same amount of time as my dodgy laptop with XP and a dodgy hard drive.
Ive only just noticed this because I now do a full reboot instead of wake up like I was doing in my first week.
A search of google and this forum doesnt turn up many answers.

    Hi killer1500,
At the moment I would not say its a hardware malfunction. Theoretically it could be software malfunction
Your notebook should be still under warranty. That means hardware can be exchanged for free from authorized service provider but before you contact the guys you should reinstall Windows.
You can use the HDD recovery feature as PauPau wrote or you use the Toshiba recovery disk that you have created. It will restore your notebook back to factory settings, that means you have the same settings as you purchased it (out of box settings). With these settings your notebook is pretested. With other words there are no software issues on recovery image without additional software.
    Check this!!!

  • Toshiba Qosmio X505 Q8102 freezes every few seconds in games.

Again i have to post in this forums, so im not satisfied and dissapointed..
The laptop is freezing every few seconds in most 3D games, i thought it's the OS  problem, so installed a fresh copy of Windows7 (original), downloaded newest drivers from toshiba support site, and installed every one of the without problem. But the problem is still here.. Don't know what to do, gave 1800$ for this pice of junk and ill i got is problems..
I'm not a newbie within computers, working with them for past 15 years (at the moment Network Administrator in Croatian Military).
Tried replacing the memory, hdd, and still nothing, same problem.. The warranty expired and doesn't  work in Europe.. Contacted US support and asked for recovery disks because this **bleep** recovery partition is damaged and can't boot from recovery.. tried with Toshiba media builder but same problem, doesn't work -_-... One thing is for sure.. im never gonna buy Toshiba again. Oh yeah, forggot tu mention, I've contacted Toshiba Croatia for recovery disks and support, and they said to me that thy don't give recovery disks and don't sell them (than why can i buy recovery dvd's from toshiba us?, and can't from Croatia)..
Anyway, if no one can tell me any solution it will be crashed with hammer and burn it  (because i have no nerves for it any more).. I use the laptop very often and i need it for my job..
Before i buyed this laptop i was in doubt, buy toshiba or alienware? Hmm, made a huge mistake..
Thank you in advance and hope someone can tell me anny solution..
    Luka

Sorry for late reply, i was away and without internet ...
Yeah, i know the procedure with the zerro key, and with toshiba media creator to make backup dvd-s etc, but non of that work because my recovery partition is kinda damaged, don't know why is that so. Didn't mess with the hdd or anything else. But that's not the problem, installed a fresh copy of windows, updated it and installed drivers and everything i need, than made a acronis secure zone on my hdd and made recovery by my self and works great.
But bigger problem is why the hell is he freezing every now and than in games, just stops for half of a second and than continues normaly for few seconds, another thing, while its frozen the sound freezes aswell, tried another sound driver, updated everything and still got same problem..

  • Questions about remote control and infrared port Qosmio F20

    Hi again,
My Toshiba Qosmio F20 comes with a remote control funcioning through a infrared device on the front of the computer.
Regarding this I have 2 questions:
    1. How do I configure additonal functionality through the remote control? (Like launching and controlling Winamp?)
    2. How do I connect other devices, like my cellular phone, pdas etc., to the infrared device on my computer?
    Kind regards,
    Vegard

    Hi,
the Remote Control delivered with the Qosmio F20 is designed only for Windows XP Media Center Edition (all Remote Control's which are designed for Windows XP Media Center Edition work only with Media Center or Windows Media Player). Other program's like Winamp were not supported by these Remote Control's.
I believe, the Remote Control's are made by Microsoft and for a wide palette of product's (the Infrared Transceiver is on nearly all Media Center PC's e.g. Siemens-Fujitsu, the same). So it's a little bit tricky to support more program's then Media Center or Windows Media Player.
For other program's you need a second Remote Control like this one:

  • CD-ROM error on boot after replacing DVD drive -Qosmio F20-574

Ok so I have a Toshiba Qosmio F20/574 and I'm trying to replace the factory DVD drive (TEAC DV-W28E) with a Liteon DS-8A1P (f/w CX12). With or without a DVD drive Im getting a CD-ROM error on boot. The only time I do not get it is when I boot with the factory DVD drive.
Here are the things I've tried...
    -Cleared the CMOS
-Removed the bezel to make sure its plug all the way in
-used the EEPROM utility to set the drive to slave.
-tested the drive in another laptop
-unistalled the factory dvd drive through device manager and tried to boot with the new dvd drive
Here are the things I found weird...
    - in the BIOS (ACP BIOS 1.30) under Device I/O it shows the Hard Drive and cd drive but its not listed by name, its showing only the IRQ of the master and secondary IDE controller (Built-in HDD Primary IDE (1F0H/IRQ14), CD-ROM Secondary IDE (170H/IRQ15)). This doesnt change, even if I boot without a DVD-Drive.
-There is no BIOS update available for this laptop. This is a Toshiba from Japan and Ive tried using Qosmio F20 BIOS 1.40 from another region but it doesnt work.
-I cant seem to find an update firmware for the Liteon DS-8A1P (CX17)
I cannot think of anything else to try. I really need help! Any ideas?

    Hello
your Liteon DS-8A1P (CX17) currently in SLAVE or CABLE SELECT Mode
you must make it as MASTER
Toshiba accepts drives in MASTER settings only
you can not make it by jumper , because there is no jumper inside the drive
you can make it master by:
1-firmware update to the drive to make it MASTER.
2-by soldring pin 47 to pin 45 inside the drive (not recomended).

  • [Solved] Random freezes on a Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q888

    Hi guys,
My laptop has been freezing randomly, about once per day, during the last 2 or 3 weeks. The system freezes completely, i.e. the display freezes, I cannot move the mouse, I cannot use the keyboard, the CAPS LOCK light starts blinking, and if there is any music playing, it enters an infinite loop of 2-3 seconds. I cannot use any keyboard combination such as Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch into a terminal. Then I have no choice but to press and hold the power button.
The freezes seem to happen in a completely random fashion, independently from what programs/applications I am running, for how long the computer has been on, how much memory I am using, CPU temperature, etc. Also, I cannot find any clue in the log files. Everything seems to be OK just before the freeze (except for some random, annoying, but apparently unrelated messages such as "[system] Failed to activate service 'org.freedesktop.Avahi': timed out"). The only clue is that the CAPS LOCK key is blinking during the freeze, which means... kernel panic?
I am running 64-bit Arch Linux on a Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q888. My current kernel is 3.4.2-2, but this has been happening since at least 3.3.7-1. I know another person with exactly the same laptop model as me, who is having the same issues. I am lost here. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Re: Qosmio F20 - No sound card driver on Toshiba support site

I had to format my HDD in my Qosmio F20-137. Then I have reinstalled operative system (XP) and all drivers I found on Toshiba support site. But I can't find any driver for the sound card and thus my PC is now soundless (except the beeps from the PC speaker).
Where do I find the right driver?
    Regards
    Pellegram

It is very easy to find the driver. You must search in archive and check for drivers listed for WXP MCE.
Anyway, the right sound driver you can find HERE .
Please send some feedback if everything is ok.

Toshiba must have or should have provided you with a CD/DVD and seril number with the machine.  however, if PSe is freezing then the first thing you need to try is to reset it to default settings.  This can be done in two ways but the easiest ay to do is to go to (I am mentioning only the one method here):
    <C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\11.0\Editor>
Find the file called: Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 Prefs.psp  and rename it to: Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 Prefs.old
For username you need to insert the correct username or Windows profile name.  Also, when you are doing this, make sure PSE is closed completely i.e. you should not have it open to do any work.
I am assuming you know how to browse the relevant folders if they are hidden in the system because this is taken for granted here.  Also, the file names may not have any extensions but I am sure you know how to make them display on the screen.
    Good luck.

  • Qosmio X505 - Q870 Freezing Problem PLS HELP !!!

    hello everyone
    i have toshiba qosmio x505 q870 with nvidia gts 360m. core i7 q720 @1.6
i have this strange problem .. the laptop freezes recently alot that im not being to use it, it happens not in particular situation .. it may happen in any time in anything you are doing. last time happened, i was logging in.
i wish to know whats the problem .. after freezing the only thing that i can do is ahard shut down by keep pressing the power button.
i tried mem test to check the rams .. no errors i have 8gb ram.
i tried scanning the hard disk for bad sectors .. also nth, i have 128 gb ssd
( the laptop came with 500gb hitachi 7200rpm, i added SSD 128gb Kingston later )
and another 500gb seagate 7200 rpm.
i tried replacing rams .. still happening.
i used the laptop without battery only on power still happening.
i used the battery alone also happened.
i changed the windows copy yes it freezed.
some times when it happens i take off the battery and take of the rams and keep pressing the power button to reset the laptop thing about electricity, thats what they told me .
Then it will happen but after awhile. one time i did this thing:
i disassembled the laptop with eveything out and did a cleaning for eveyrhing ( bearing in mind it wasnt full of dust or anything it was clean ) and then reinstalled everything in place.
    That was a while ago..
After that it took awhile before rehappening, something about a month . and one time happened during the installtion of windows =S
i tried eveything .. i updated all the drivers, uninstall reinstall, i did a recovery i did eveything with no results no over heating problems
i asked the support center and they didnt figure out whats causing. they did not figure out the problem soo... to show me that they are a good costumer care center they told me that they want to replace :
    1. motherboard 280 $
    2. graphic card 600 $
    3. 2 x 4 gb ram 100 $
    4. HDD 70 $
the laptop is out of warranty and im sure i wont do such a thing ..
all of that to be replaced just because they did not figure out.
and im the one whos gonna cry !
im sure that this solution is not the right one.
i tried four different HDD same result and as i mentioned .. one of them was during the installation of windows during the recovery ...
i almost tried eveything i tried to run with one memory module, then the other module, and see if either provides more stability. For clarity, let's call one RAM 1 and the other RAM 2. and i have two slots; call them slot 1 and slot 2. Try RAM 1 in slot 1 with slot 2 empty. If that does not allow the system to work well, try RAM 1 in slot 2 with slot 1 empty. If that does not provide more stability, try RAM 2 in slot 1 with slot 2 empty. If that still is not stable, try RAM 2 in slot 2 with slot 1 empty. still freezing =(
    Plus .. i tried 8 different rams modules 1 in 1 , 1 in 2, 2 in 1, 2 in 2 and goes on .. etc .. still freezing .. i tried eveything humanty can do ..
i guess im gonna buy a robot and let him set, think, work, and figure out whats causing ..
after all im guessing its sth about electricity .. i think thats theres atiny black thing in the motherboard causing loose or giving more static or delivering more or less electricity to some parts or anything like this .
who knows ... my humanty after i did all that made think like this .. or lets say its BY LOGIC .. Please Anyone can Help ... !!
anyone can help =( im disperate

A FIX THAT WORKS SO FAR!
I have a x505 - q870 myself and have had problems with freezing for a long time - till a few days ago, it began to freeze at random times even 15 minutes after boot, making the laptop unusable. I use a cooling pad, and that didn't help either. I thought it maybe a corrupt OS, bad memory or a heating problem.
I found this toshiba form post and on advice decided to unseat and reseat the CMOS battery. WARNING: this takes time and patience, you have to disassemble the entire laptop to get to the motherboard. I'll attach an X505 service manual that I found a while ago.
While getting to the CMOS battery, I also discovered that the fans had a carpet layer of dust/lint covering the rear vents (after 2 years heavy travel and use). I cleaned these out (with air), unseated and reseated the battery, and reassembled the laptop. You will have to update system time on first boot. VOILA! I have had the laptop working for two days now, no freezing yet! I am guessing a couple of reasons:
    1. Hard resetting the motherboard did something magical - worth a try.
    2. Cleaning dirt blocking vents under the motherboard definitely helped heating issues. You may not have this problem. But in any case, do you use a cooling pad?
If you are out of warranty (like me) and have some technical knowledge, I suggest you give this a try. Since I did this I have not had a freeze yet after constant use! This after having repeated freezes every hour of use is definitely an improvement.

  • Toshiba Qosmio X505 plugged in, not charging message

I have a Toshiba Qosmio X505 that is almost 4 years old and have some power issues.  The battery is drained to about 6% and the battery icon in the tool bar has the plug symbol for a second then it goes away then comes back and goes away.... it keeps flashing like this.  When I move the mouse over the battery icon it says plugged in, not charging.  I have tried every solution I have found on line with no luck.  I have removed the battery and ac charger and then held the power button for 30 seconds, I have cleaned the connections, I have re-installed the battery about 10 times, I have rebooted all to no avail.
When I remove the ac adapter the power light is off and the battery light is orange.  When I remove the battery and plug in the ac adapter the power light is steady red.  As soon as I put the battery in the ac power light begins to blink on and off.  The computer does not power on with the battery removed and the ac adapter plugged in (but I'm not sure if it's supposed to). I will also add that in the last week or so when I power on I would get a black screen saying an NTFS file is bad and the machine wants to do a disk check.  The disk check never runs, even when I try to do it manually.
I have read this could be a motherboard issue, an ac adapter issue, or a battery issue.  I am hopoing a replacement battery fixes the problem.  Before buying a battery I was hoping someone had some info to share.  Thanks

I bought a battery hoping that takes care of the problem.  If that doesn't work I will try a new adapter and if that doesn't work I will probably just remove the hard drive and use it as an external on a new machine.  Seems there really isn't a whole lot of info out there about this problem other than the start button solution.

  • Satellite L300 keeps freezing

My laptop keeps freezing ... it doesn't always happen, but it's started happening regularly over the past few weeks, where all programs stop responding and I can't open Task Manager, so the only thing to do is to turn the power off.
I tried restarting in Safe mode, and did a System restore, which seemed to work temporarily, but it started happening again, and even doing another restore hasn't fixed the problem. My laptop is only 8 months old and has up-to-date Norton antivirus running; I've done comprehensive virus scans but haven't picked up anything. The freezes don't seem to be brought on by any particular software - they just happen randomly, sometimes after an hour or two, sometimes not at all, and sometimes quite soon after I start the computer.
I've also run the Toshiba Assist PC Diagnostic tool which came with the computer, and that didn't pick up any problems with the hardware. It seems likely to be a software rather than a hardware problem, but I can't think of anything I've installed recently that would cause any issues, and also the fact that no program in particular brings on the freezes makes it hard to determine what the problem is.
Other than the Diagnostic tool, the system restore and running Norton, I don't know what to do!
My system is a toshiba satellite L300, running Vista Home Premium SP1, core 2 duo 2.00GHz processor, with 2GB RAM.
    Any suggestions??
    Thanks!

    Hi
First of all I recommend removing the Norton Antivirus because this tool needs a lot of hardware resources and slow downs the system.
Instead of Norton you could use the Avira Antivir.
This software is free and can be downloaded from different pages. I use this too and Im really satisfied.
Furthermore you should check if such freezing are not related to the high temperature.
You could clean the ventilators using compressed air spray. It will help you to remove the dust from the cooling fans and grilles.
    Check it!
