Toshiba Qosmio F55-Q504 Recovery Partition

Hello,
I just upgraded my old Qosmio to Windows 8. I don't really like the new OS, so I decided to return to Windows Vista. However, everytime I tried to press and hold F8 or 0 before turning on the laptop, I still could not get into the recovery.  It seems that my Recovery Partition was automatically deleted when I installed Windows 8..
So when we upgrade to Windows 8, the Recovery Partition will be deleted  is that correct? Please confirm.
I also noticed that the recovery partition is around 1GB using disk managament tool on Windows 8. So I think the Recovery Partition might be deleted because 1GB for Recovery Partition is too small.
Please help!
Thanks
-edited-
seems i am able to get back my partition after restoring using Recovery Discs. Now my question is:
Can I use the Recovery Discs while on Windows 8? I do not want to spend my $30 to buy the Recovery Discs and then it come out to be impossible to use it on different OS.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Yeah I forgot to press the shift button before turning it off.
I thought so.

  • Qosmio F55-Q504 Drivers for XP

    Hello everybody,
Please help. I have three questions:
    1. May be somebody's already met problems with drivers for XP for F55. I bought F55 with Vista, installed XP but I've found drivers for WiFi and nVidia only and I was not able to find drivers for other devices unfortunately. On the official site thare are drivers for Vista only and there is not BIOS version for XP too. May be somebody knows where I can find them.
    2. Together with the laptop there were no any CDs and recovery or reinstallation Vista is possible from HDD recovery partition only. For instance if I'm afraid to break recovery partition by my experiments with XP installation or Vista reinstallation and I want to make copy of the whole HDD to another one or to make copy of one partition. Is it possible? Did anybody try to do that? I tried to copy the whole HDD with Vista or separate partiotions (recovery partitions including) - the new HDD or partition is not loaded. I tried several time - there is no positive result. Is there any copy protection software on Toshiba's HDD? And how to make HDD copy to avoid data lost?
    3. F55 has GPS and preinstalled Garmin Mobile PC? Turn-by-Turn Navigation? trial version. While loading the Garmin Mobile asks to enter key. Where can I find the key for this trial version? There are no any CD, sticker or box with the key. And who knows is there email support from Toshiba? On the official site there are some phones only but I can't call them I need e-mail.
    Thanks a lot in advance.

    Good day,
Thanks a lot for reply and usefull answer.
I downloaded drivers according to your links and some of them were really good. I tried to install some other drivers desighed for Vista and I had a success. Now I have two device only in device manger which are unknown. These are Audio Device on HD Audio Bus (it likes you described, driver for Vista is not suitable) and a SM host controller (I don't know what's that but it's not cardbus controller). I'll try find somthing for them.
And drivers installation arises new questions:
    a. Of course my control buttons (fn and dolby, play/pause etc.) don't work. You've written: "And I miss also the program that made the touch buttons work. Seems there is no equivalent for XP. As for Config Free program try to use a XP version of the program that is made for a Satellite A series laptop. For me it worked." Please explain what's Config Free? Before I had thought that to make above buttons operating I have to downgrade my BIOS version. But on the official site there are two BIOS version only and both of them are for Vista. Unfortunately there is nothing for XP. Is it really that Config Free is software which can force control buttons to work without BIOS downgrading?
    b. My laptop has 4Gb RAM. First time I installed Vista 32-bit edition and I saw that Vista saw all 4Gb of RAM. After that when I installed XP 32-bit edition I saw that XP saw 2,99 Gb only. I thought that after installation all drivers for my chipset the XP would see the whole 4 Gb of RAM. But now as I said above there are two unkonwn devices only in the Diveice Manager and XP see 2,99 Gb as before. Who knows should I find one more special drivers to allow XP to see the whole RAM or it's impossible for XP 32-bit and I have to install 64-bit edition?
Concernig copy of HDD. I tried to do that by Partion Magic, Paragon Partition Manager, Acronics and Ghost Images. And I tried to connect HDDs by different interfaces (from native laptop controller to external usb and reverse, and from one external usb HDD to another) - nothing. When I'm taking HDD with new installed XP, connecting it through external sata-usb controller to one usb port from one side and connecting another HDD through external sata-usb controller to other usb port from the second side I can do copy of the whole HDD or partition from the first HDD to the second. And new created HDD works and loads good. When I'm trying to repeat the same but with original HDD with Vista and recovery partitions it doesn't work. Moreover some partition managers (e.g. PMagic) see the first partition (which is called "Toshiba" and it's not hidden but with unknown file system) and last recovery hidden partition as invalid partitions and refuse attempting to make copy at once. But even if partition manager doesn't write an error at the beginning (Acronics - the best) and makes partition copies successfully the new created HDD doesn't load. And all advices to recover Vista begin: "boot from recovery cd, choose system recovery.....". I haven't any cd and my recovery utility from HDD offers me to install Vista again without any recovery options. Unfortunately...
Concerning Garmin I wrote to Garmin support and I'm waiting answer from them. That's great that driver for GPS from Vista is suitable for XP too.
Tks for reply and tks in advance.

  • Toshiba WT tablet - Deleted recovery partition

    Hi,
I had problem with Windows 8.1 so I tried to refresh system, but I couldn't do this and then I tried to get my tablet to factory setting and what suprised me that now my tablet don't have partition and I only see " No bootable device-please restart system".
So I can imagine that I deleted my windows 8.1 from my tablet :( How can i repair itn how can I instal windows again?
    Please help me!!!

    Hi
I presume you didnt create recovery media (USB), right?
From your other posting I presume you have WT8-A model so please download users manuals document from here and check page 50. There you can find detailed instructions how to restore preinstalled software from the recovery partition.
Please check it and test it one more time and send some feedback.
In worst case you must order original recovery media from Toshiba.

  • Equium will not boot - how to access Recovery partition?

Hi, my sister has a 2008 Equium A200-1V0 with Vista 32-bit which will not boot (probably due to virus rootkit damage). It loads the BIOS but then goes straight to black screen with flashing cursor.
    F8 does not work.
F2 goes to Phoenix TrustedCore Setup utility. The Toshiba hard drive and CD-ROM drive are listed in Main and Boot in the correct order.
Using F12 I can get it to boot from a Win7 64-bit repair disc I burned using my laptop.
However, this does not recognise the OS nor any image or restore points (because it is 64-bit) but it will load Command Prompt.
In *Command Prompt*, I can start Notepad and when I click File/ Open and double click on Computer it shows 4 Hard drives as follows:
    Local Disk (C:)
Data (D:) 42 GB free of 54.5 GB
WinRE (E:) 1.11 GB free of 1.46 GB
Boot (X:) 29.0 MB free of 31.5 MB (which is used by the Repair disc)
So the C: drive is listed but without capacity.
    *CHKDSK*
chkdsk c: /r and press return
"The type of the file system is NTFS.
Unable to determine volume version and state. CHKDSK aborted.
Failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50.
    *Running TESTDISK*
    Analysis:
Partition Start End Size in Sectors

    2 * HPFS - NTFS 191 89 27 7477 118 1 117051392
    3 P HPFS - NTFS 7477 118 2 14592 190 62 114307072 (data)
    * = Primary bootable
When doing Quick Search and then P - list files, of the second partition it reports:
"Can't open filesystem. Filesystem seems damaged."
So what I would like to do is boot up from Windows Restore on the E drive.
My question is to any Toshiba experts: When F8 does not work how do I use the recovery partition???
    Laptop is:
    Part Number : PSAF5E-002005KS
    Key Features
    - Intel Pentium Dual-Core Processor T2310
    - Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium Edition
    - DVD Super Multi (Double Layer) drive
    - 2,048 (1,024 + 1,024) MB RAM (667 MHz)
    - 15.4 " WXGA TFT display 1,280 x 800

    *UPDATE*:
I have borrowed a genuine Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit dvd and booted up with that.
    Clicked on "Repair your Computer"
Then it goes striaght to System recovery Options but no Operating System is shown. Click Next.
    Then:
    "Choose a Recovery Tool.
Operating system: Unknown on (Unknown) Local Disk"
    *Startup Repair*
    This takes 1 second.
    Root cause found
System volume on disk is corrupt.
    *System Restore*
"X - To Perform an offline System Restore, you must specify which Windows installation you would like to restore.
For example, if the installation located in "C:\Windows" should be restored enter the following command:
    rstrui.exe /OFFLINE:C:\Windows "
    *Windows Complete PC Restore*
" No valid backup locations could be found.
Windows cannot find a backup on the hard disks or DVDs on this computer. Attach the correct hard disks or insert the last backup DVD and then start the restore process again. "
    Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
Windows cannot check for memory problems...[snip]
    *Command Prompt*
    This is working fine.
    CHKSDK C:
The type of file system is NTFS.
Unable to determine volume version and state. CHKDSK aborted.
The HDD is 120 GB and is split by Toshiba into 3 partitions.
C:\ drive (56GB) is bootable with Windows - this is corrupted.
D:\ drive (55 GB) has all Data - fully accessible
    E:\ drive is CDROM
F:\ drive (1.46 GB) is the WinRE recovery partition - this is fully accessible.
So my question still remains: can I recover my Toshiba laptop using this recovery partition?
PLEASE NOTE: as mentioned above, pressing F8 during boot has no effect and therefore Safe Mode cannot be accessed.

  • Qosmio F55-Q502 can't use GPS in Vietnam and Southeast Asia

I have a Toshiba Qosmio F55 Q502 Laptop with Garmin GPS integrated system buy from US.
But when i carry it to Vietnam and try to use GPS, it not work.
I open Garmin Mobile PC, It just have US and EU maps.
I try to turn on GPS, but the satellite signal always empty.
I've tried to go around many places with clear sky view but cound'nt catch the sattelite signal.
I though that GPS is Globe Positioning system that mean it can be use everywhere over the world.
I dont know may be my GPS have problem or the GPS can't use in VietNam.
My laptop has just bought a few days and i haven't tried GPS in US before.
Can anyone help me solve this problem?

GPS is worldwide, but the maps you get with a device are genreally not.
So the GPS should be able to get a satellite fix anywhare on the planet for as long as there is good singal, but you might have to purchase the maps of the country you want (unless just having your current coordinates is enough for you).
Take the laptop somewhere with no tall buildings around you and an unobstructed view of the sky and wait for it to get a fix (it might take up to 10-15 mins on a cold start depending on the GPS chip). Don't try this inside a house or a car just to minimise any complicating factors.

  • Qosmio F55 Black screen on boot

I have a toshiba qosmio f55 and does anyone know why sometimes when I reboot, I get a black screen but windows is being loaded and do hear the jingle tune. It happens randomly. I would have to unplug or just hold down the power button. It must be a hardware issue since it happens on a fresh install.
Also when installing fresh windows 7, at the first time loading the resolution is set to a 440 X 680 or something with only 4 bit colors. When installing the nvidia drivers, it is fine and can set to 1440X900 and 32 bit colors. When playing games the laptop is fine as well as everything else.
Appreciate your time for an answer :)

Yes, the 400X600 ugly resolution happens during the initial install of windows 7 once, then it was fine. Just sometimes when rebooting the screen is black but the backlight is on, no picture and windows is loaded.
    Maybe its the hard drive?
Window loads perfectly and can play games.
Only once while playing Risen game when trying to load the game the game stuttered and was forced to restart. GPU replacement would be super expensive and hard since I bought this used but in like new condition.
I told the seller this and said he hasn't experienced the problem during install.
This is my 3rd qosmio f55, I love this pc so much I can't ever go back to a satellite, nor the F60 model isn't available in the USA yet.

Maybe you could be able to use the available files in order to create own disk. Found interesting threads:

  • Windows Vista recovery partition lost - will toshiba send me discs?

Hi, something happened to my hard drive and the vista recovery partition was erased, so i cannot recover vista. I just bought this laptop 2 months ago and i paid for the OS with it, i have the code of authentication and serial number on the bottom of my laptop, will toshiba send me install discs? i also have the emails from best buy from when i purchased the laptop online.
    thanks

    sijyb00 wrote:
See, the the thing is, I DID make the recovery cd... but it isn't working. From my understanding, the cd uses the information from the recovery partition to restore Windows? Correct me if I'm wrong.  Every time I boot up the cd it detects no OS and when I click continue, it begins the installation and immediately says Installation cancelled, missing files, something like C:\win.int is missing.
So the recovery cd is not working. I called Toshiba and from what I could understand from the horrible english, was that they would charge me for another recovery cd... which I don't need, because I have one. Or send in my laptop for "repair." They said it was my hard drive. Which is complete bull**bleep**, when windows failed I ran a linux os on it perfectly fine, so it is not my hard drive.
Anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this? I have a product key for vista which I PAID for when I bought the laptop... I don't think it's fair to have to buy it over again for $100-200
No, the recovery disks don't rely on anything on the hard drive.  From what you say, either you are not booting from the optical drive, or the disks indeed are faulty.
The last I knew, replacement disks were $25.  See the sticky at the top of the General Discussion topic for details.
There have been a lot of reports of problems with recovery disks, so I'm a bit surprised that Toshiba won't ship you replacements at no charge.  Might be worth another try, and an attempt to get to the next tech level.

  • Toshiba L505-LS5007 Recovery Partition

I got this used laptop from a friend and it don't have a Recovery Partition.   My main question is: Did it come with a Recovery Partition? It came with some home made Recovery disks so I am good there.  Thanks pcpunk

I already have Recovery discs but I think they were made after the Recovery Partition was deleted.
That's not possible, since the discs are created from that partition. But recovery discs may be ordered from Toshiba here.
The original Recovery Media Will Create Partitions even if they do not already exist?  I have read that W7 WILL do this,...
A generic Windows 7 installation disc, whether plain retail or OEM will not create the recovery partition (as you've discovered). It does create a partition which contains the Recovery Environment (WinRE), but that's another story.
The OEM (Toshiba) creates that partition to restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents, which includes all the special drivers, utilities, and applications originally on the disk. Among those things on the hard drive was the recovery partition.
Again, when you restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media, the drive is wiped clean and all the original partitions are restored. That's necessary when the hard drive is replaced.
See the section Recovering the Internal Storage Drive which begins on p. 61 of the User's Guide.

    Hope that settles the matter.

If the HDD Recovery partition has been erased and you didn't make your own Recovery Media as directed when you first started the machine, you can order Recovery Media HERE.  Then, see your User's Guide starting on page 53 in the section entitled "Recovery of Internal Storage Drive" for instructions.  Good Luck.

  • Toshiba L50-A Cannot use recovery partition.

Hello i have l50-A series satelite laptop.
    I had windows 8.
Recently i installed windows 8.1 from dvd. (oem), and just in case, i did not touch recovery partition to use it later.
Right now i want to use recovery partition for the factory reset, but i cannot reach recovery partition.
    I tried pressing 0,
    I tried using boot menu,
I tried windows 8.1  recovery options... nothing works.
(also right now it seems to be multiple recovery partitions..)
I'm pretty sure factory recovery partition is healty and still stood. (seen as 10gb partition)
ps: "Kurtarma Bölümü" = Recovery Partition.

Toshiba uses the number 0 or f12 to reach the recovery on start up. Press the shift key when shutting down then press the number 0 or the f12 on start up, you may have to press the fn key and the 0 or f12.
Some have posted that after going to Windows 8.1 it breaks the Windows 8 recovery option so they had to use Windows 8 recovery media.

  • Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q8102X Restarting

    Hello all,
I just bought a Qosmio x505-Q8102x and Im having an issue with it randomly restarting when playing games. The odd thing is that it only seems to happen when I have the power adaptor plugged in.
I also have a side question about how to adjust the contrast of the screen without using the option in the Toshiba program that seems to be set up for the web cam. I tried to use the contrast option in there but it said that it would use high cpu. So I turned it off. I just can't seem to find the same screen controls that you have with all other monitors.
    Thanks,

Ah that's c*ap.. but thx for reply mate
Not quite satisfied with support here in Europe/Croatia, can't get any recovery media for my laptop as the recovery partition is damaged.. Fresh copy of windows works like crap with everything installed and updated.. I runned better when it was with factory preinstalled software..

  • Re: Unable to use the recovery partition on Satellite L505D

    Hello.
I am trying to help a friend with their Satellite L505D that had a serious virus issue(s). I was not able to run/install any programs with the virus on it. I used a Microsoft tool to remove the rootkit trojan, but I still had virus issues. I also lost most of the programs on the machine. All the folders were empty (except for some games), so I could not access any tools that way. I could not get the machine to load any Toshiba restore utility by pressing Zero while powering on. I accessed some recovery options using F8 during bootup, and had a link to restore to Toshiba's original setting, but clicking that choice did nothing other than pause for a few seconds. I waited several minutes, clicked it again, rebooted and tried again. Nothing. As a side note, once during all this, the restore partition was visible from explorer.exe. Not before, or since.
So I then Reformated the computer with a Win7 Home Premium 64bit upgrade disk (leaving the restore partition intact), and entered the key for the system. Supprise supprise, it is asking me to activate within 3 days.
My basic question is, can I access that recovery partition in a different manner to attempt to use it? IE copy it's contents, or boot to some comand prompt to log to e:?
Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

    > Is a recovery disk from another computer using Win7 Home Premium 64-bit usable?
Generally speaking yes BUT this second notebook must be 100% identical with same model number (PAxxxx).
    > Or if not, am I left with either ordering recovery media from Toshiba, or wiping the entire HDD and installing another licensed version of Win7?
Exactly. To be honest better option is to order original Toshiba recovery disc.
You can order it under https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx
For 30 euro you will have original disc that you can use anytime you want. This disc has OS with valid licence, all necessary drivers.
It is also simplest way to have all properly installed. With 5 mouse clicks and after 2 hours only notebook will have factory settings again.

This site is for US computers. I doubt you'll get your questions for that Canadian model answered here.
There appear to be two recovery partitions. Maybe one for 32- and one for 64-bit Windows. Or maybe one is for English and the other for French.
Your User's Manual isn't much help either. You probably need to ask Toshiba tech support in Canada.
About all I have to offer is this: Be wary of drives with advanced-format technology. See my message about that.

  • How do I reformat hard drive without affecting recovery partition?

I would like to know how I can reformat my Toshiba hard drive without affecting the hidden recovery partition? I would like to get rid of the preinstalled Windows 7 OS and replace it with Windows XP, which is not as bloated. Also, does anyone know of a good 'free' disk scrubber program? I actually have the original 'disk scrubber' software, but the software disk just won't work any more. Finally, I tried to get the computer ready for the drive scrubbing, but I still can't change the disk order on my Toshiba laptop. I did get into the 'bios' screen by hitting the F8 key on startup, which did bring up the 'boot menu' screen. When I selected the cd/dvd drive and then hit the F10 key to save the change, nothing happened! I put in a data disk, but the laptop still booted into the Windows 7 OS. If I can't get the laptop to boot into the cd/dvd drive, I don't think that I can erase the hard drive and put Windows XP on since I wouldn't be able to boot up the laptop with the Windwos XP disk. Is that true? Anyway, without changing the boot order, I can't do anything. Please help! Thanks!

If you use the recovery that is on the hidden partition (hold down the zero key while starting up computer) then your OS reinstall will not affect that hidden partition, just overwrite the c: drive.
