Toshiba Satelite A350 additional hard drive

Hello there,
I have a Toshiba Satelite A350 laptop. Ive noticed that I have one empty slot for a HDD but the sata connector is not soldered in. Thats fine as I can solder the connector mysalfe. My question is, if I do that would my second HDD even work, as i dont know either that sata connector is connected to the CPU or is it just an empty, not populated with components footprint?
Would aprichiate any help here.

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

Always want to keep the boot drive with more free space than may seem necessary for performance and to function at its best, 30-40% free or even 50% is not excessive.
Ideal is to separate your system from your data.
You should always have bootable backup / clone of your system
Don't use a green drive for system or data though.
When you are done cloning system and/or data, remove the old original and keep as backup.
Then move the system drive to #1 - no matter what you want to reset the default boot volume to where the system is.

  • How to add and configure an additional hard drive.

I will like to know how to install and configure an additional hard drive. I will like to know how to configure the server so the services will start using this additional space. Intel based Xserver. late 2009.
    Erik.

Your question is a little vague... "services will start using this additional space..."?
    Let's see, where to start.
You don't say how many drives you currently have in your server. If all three drive bays are used then you'll probably need some kind of external array. There are many to choose from.
If you have a spare bay (or two) then you can buy a new drive bay (ADM - Apple Drive Module) (several online vendors still sell them), but you can't just put a bare drive into an empty bay since the blank trays lack the electrical connectors to support a drive.
Once you work out your drive options (internal vs. external, capacity, etc.) you can work out a plan to use them.
The specifics of that will depend on what services you're using. Are you web serving? file serving? home directory serving? or maybe mail? database? something else.
In general, once a drive is attached and initialized (via Disk Utility.app) it's up to you to configure the individual server components to use the space. That typically involves changing some kind of configuration parameter (e.g. httpd.conf for apache, /etc/my.cnf for MySQL, or various options in Server.app for other services) to tell them to use the new volume.
If you want to migrate the entire server to the new drive (e.g. the new drive is larger/faster) then you can clone your existing OS drive to the new drive and just reboot.
So, you see, there are many ways to do this. Everyone's situation will be a little different.

  • HT1229 How do I back up my entire iPhoto library to an additional hard drive.  I have a WD 1TB hard drive which I would like to use as a backup drive to my MacBook Pro.  What steps do I take to do this.  Thank you

How do I back up myentire iPhoto library to an an additional hard drive,  I have a WD My Book 1TB hooked up to my MacBook Pro via USB 2 port.

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

  • How to add additional hard drive?

How do I add an additional hard drive to my MACMINI? I would like to put a 2nd drive in the MACMINI, or perhaps add additional space to the drive inside? Is there a way to hack the old drive inside to make it bigger?
    Thanks!
    Capitan

You can not add a second internal drive due to physical space constraints but the mini's hard disk is replaceable. The type of drive you will require is dependent on your type of mini, G4 or Intel. Both require laptop drives but the G4 has the common PATA while the Intel uses a SATA drive.
The easiest solution is an external Firewire drive. There are some very nice ones available which are designed to sit beneath the mini and are finished in a similar style. Most also have built in Firewire and USB hubs to add additional ports to the system. My local Apple store actually has one attached to the display model. You can even put your operating system on an external drive and boot from that if you wish. It has been suggested in this forum that a 7200 rpm drive over Firewire can give perceivable speed improvement on a G4 (due to the internal 5400 rpm drive), but I have no experience with doing so.
    Hope that helps,
    Jason.

    Hi,
The connectors in the laptop are SATA and the hard drive is SATA II. However, your laptop supports only up to 160GB 5400rpm hard drives or a 200GB 4200rpm one.. Higher capacity drives than those mentioned may not work..

  • Additional hard drive

I added a additional hard drive (seagate) to my macbook pro. With the hardwrk kit I removed the optical drive and build in the old HDD. My System now boots from the new SSHD. Is it possible to format the original HDD?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Of course. If you have everything you need on the SSHD, you can format the old hard drive. To do it, you can use Disk Utility, which you can find in /Applications/Utilities, and you have to follow these steps > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html
After formatting it (I recommend you to format it in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as Format), you can use it to store other files that does not fit in the SSHD or for whatever you want

  • Installed additional hard drive, previous one is not recognized.

I have a G4 867 MDD using 4 internal hard drives. In the ATA100 bay, I had a Seagate which was my main System drive. I just bought a larger drive intended to become my system drive, so I moved the Seagate to the outer slave position. I changed the jumpers accordingly.
Problem is the computer now doesn't see my Seagate as a startup option, and will only boot into OS 9.2.2. First message is that the disk is unreadable, do I wan't to initialize? No! However, in this message, it does correctly see the drive as a 149 Gig drive. When I booted into OS X from an external drive, the profiler did see the Seagate but said it only was a 31 Gig drive, when in fact 149 is accurate. However it did not and does not mount on the desktop. Seagate is barely a year old, so I don't suspect drive failure. It worked perfectly before this.
I rechecked everything to make sure the cables were secure, etc. A year or so ago I had done the same kind of switching over when I bought the Seagate, but that time all was fine and when I booted, it defaulted to the old system, which is what should be happening now.
I need some help here, thanks!

    Hi, opto -
...the profiler did see the Seagate but said it only was a 31 Gig drive...
Recheck the jumpers on that drive carefully. Some drives came with an additional jumper and position, which limited the effective capacity of the drive to 32GB (because some PC processors could not address a drive size larger than that).
...so I moved the Seagate to the outer slave position. I changed the jumpers accordingly.
It's not necessary to change the jumpers. With two drives on an ATA bus, it makes no difference to the Mac which is Master and which is Slave, nor which is connected to what connector. See the last paragraph of -
Article #24342 - Power Macintosh G3 and G4: IDE Master and Slave Support and Configuration
G4 MDD models can use the Cable Select jumper settings. You might experiment with setting the drives that way.

  • Toshiba Satellite a505-6005 hard drive issue and questions regarding options I may have

Issue: start up computer and windows does not start. It eventually goes to a startup repair screen and eventually says "resolving disk errors...", and that's if it even gets to that screen. Unfortunately I never made a recovery disk or system image discs (I know that was not smart). I did however kept my files backed up so that was good.
Steps I took: Took it to Best Buy and the tech advised me that the Black Tie 2 year protection had expired on Jan 30th 2012, and so it could not be repaired for free. I asked the tech there how much it would cost to fix and they had advised me that it was most likely a hard drive issue and that it would cost nearly $400 to replace/fix it. So I decided to buy a new Asus K53E-BBR14 laptop since it was not much more. When I got home and loaded everything up and got the computer to how I want, I went ahead and made a recovery disc and system image disc's. I tried using the recovery disc that I had made with my Asus in the Toshiba laptop and boot it from the dvd drive and it did not get anywhere. So I ASSUME that it really is a hard drive error because the RAM worked just fine in my new laptop and "repairing disk errors.." means something is wrong with the hard drive:
Now that you know the background of what has happened my questions are as followed:
    1. Can I buy a new hard drive for the Toshiba and use the recovery and system image disc's i created on the new hard drive that i install in the toshiba? and just removed the bloatware from Asus (or does that not even get added to the disc's I created)?
    2. If so, will it prompt me to enter the Windows 7 product key? and therefore using the product key located on the bottom of the toshiba?
    3. What other steps could I take to make this toshiba laptop salvageable? This way i can turn around and sell it.
    Thanks,
    Russell States

    Also,
I noticed that i can purchase (well pay the shipping anyways) recovery media from Toshiba. Can I use that on a new hard drive installed in the toshiba?
BTW ran the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool and no problems were found with the memory. and i do not care about the old hard drive as I have MY files backed up. I just want to try to get this toshiba laptop back to being "like new".
    Thanks,
    Russell

  • Toshiba satellite L305D-S5934 hard drive problem

Trying to do a system recovery on my laptop and not having any luck. These are the errors I get..
    Error 08-0e89-0000 partition creation failed
No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key
    Error : 20-FFFE-045D
I have tried every recovery option and Toshiba sent me recovery disks but still no luck. Anything else I should try? Thanks in advance!

A friend of mine asked me to look at their Toshiba laptop having same issues with hard drive that I have read about "Error 20-FFFE-045D",we have since replaced the hard drive based upon info I read about that error online and we are still receiving the same error message upon reinstall of windows on the laptop. Any other possible things we can look into?

  • Toshiba Satellite M35X-S114 Hard Drive Replacement

I have a Toshiba Satellite M35X-S114, and the hard drive is broken. The hard drive model is MK4025GAS. Where can I buy it? Can I find cheaper one interchangable?

You can use any parallel ATA drive that is jumper selectable as 'master'.  Cable select only drives won't work.  Local stores like BestBuy usually have a selection of replacement notebook drives although the PATA drives are getting harder to find with the spreading use of SATA drives.  To the best I can determine, your notebook has 48-bit LBA which would allow any size drive available.  There are a number of online vendors as well as local sources.  I've used NewEgg successfully in the past.

  • Toshiba ph3100u-1exb External Hard Drive Will Not Stay On

    Hello all.
I recently purchased a Toshiba ph3100u-1exb 1.0 TB external hard drive. It's working great, but the problem I am running into is that it will not stay powered on for more than a couple minutes. I'm sure that its some kind of power saving feature, but if there's a way to turn it off, I'd like to have the drive accessible at all times, as I use the information stored on it quite a bit.
When it powers down, I can always press the power button to bring it back up, but I would like to have it on all the time. Is there any way at all to do this? A setting on the drive, or possibly within Windows?
I have the drive hooked up via a USB cable, as this PC is a bit older and does not use the eSATA cables for hard drives.

    Hi
In my opinion the HDD should be checked with different computers and different OS (Vista, Win 7, Win XP). If the external HDD will not functions using different systems and computers then its definitely an HDD issue.
Ive got 2 different external HDDs one HDD died and I had to replace it.
In my opinion, if an HDD begins to malfunction then its mostly an hardware related issue and there is nothing to do as to replace the faulty drive
