Toshiba Satellite A300-129 Crisis Recovery Mode Phoenix BIOS with USB drive

When flashing my BIOS back from v4.20 to a v3.90 I found on the net, everything went alright in windows, but as soon as I rebooted, the laptop showed the symptoms of a failed BIOS.
I'm now trying to repair the BIOS using the crisis recovery tool. I used the following procedure to create the USB stick and recover the BIOS
-Run the WINCRIS.Exe file in administrator and compatibility mode (Windows XP SP2)
-Select the USB drive (1GB Kingston), and format it with the tool
-Reinsert the drive and format again with the tool without restarting it to be sure that the disk is properly formatted
-Take the BL5S3D57.WPH file from the toshiba BIOS update and rename it to BIOS.WPH, and copy to the Crisdisk directory
-Copy the files BIOS.WPH (the one from toshiba I renamed), minidos.sys and winphlash16.exe to the drive in windows
-Take the drive out
-Plug battery out, plug AC out of laptop, hold the power button for a few seconds to make sure no remaining current is in the laptop
-Plug the USB Drive in
-Hold Fn+Esc in my case, this is the key combination where the laptop tries to read the USB drive the moment it boots up. It has something to do with enabling a boot block in the BIOS with that key combination.
-Plug AC in while still holding the F button
The F button does not nescessarily need to be held while plugging in AC, the laptop also tries to read from the drive if I hold it after plugging AC in, and before pushing the power button.
-Press the power button
I need to push the button twice, because the first time after plugging in AC the power button doesn't do a thing. When holding the power button for around 10 seconds after right after plugging AC in, the laptop boots sometimes, didn't find a pattern yet here.
The easy thing however is to just push the button 2 or 3 times, then it boots, and the booting procedure seems exactly the same as when holding the power button
-Wait for the LED to flash on the USB Drive. Very important: it seems to only flash ONCE for me, so it means it tries to access the drive, but I think it doesn't contain the right files or isn't formatted correctly. If I keep holding the F button while the laptop is on, the LED flashes once every 10-20 seconds.
From here on out the laptop is supposed to be reading the BIOS files from the USB drive, but apparently I'm doing something wrong. So here comes my question:
What could I be doing wrong in formatting the drive or writing the files to it?
Do I have the wrong CRISDISK? Is it normal that the files arent copied by CRISDISK to the USB Drive and that I have to do it myself?
Am I using the wrong WinPhlash? Or should I use the files that are supplied in the official BIOS rar from toshiba?
I have tried different versions of CRISDISK, different USB Drives (one 4GB would not be read by the broken laptop, and another 1GB would not be read by CRISDISK when trying to format the drive)
Tried different files on the USB Drive, tried bios.wph instead of capitals, tried BIOS.FD,...
I'm kind of running out of options here to try. Is there anyone who has experience with this recovery mode flashing that could tell me what I might be doing wrong? Or that has any suggestions on which other CRISDISK or toshiba updates to use?
Thanks anyways to people who read this and try to help!

I hope that Russian service provider will be as honest as the European one and won't solder something out as a souvenir :)
They said, it will take approximately a week.
Serviceman said that L30 has no built-in crisis recovery routine.
So I wasted money by buying an USB floppy disk drive and risked to burn something in my laptop by frequent powering it on and off (and may be burnt, will see).
The lesson I learnt is never flash BIOS if everything works and if even flash then not from Windows (btw. I flashed successfully my Satellite A300 from Windows without any problems).
Phoenix makes its BIOSes since 2001 with a crisis recovery boot block, but Toshiba locks this feature in many laptops, I think, not without a reason. Service providers want money too :)

  • How can I install windows XP on my Satellite A300-129

    Hello,
Since a few days I have bought a Toshiba Satellite A300-129. I'm very satisfied with the laptop, though I don't like to work with Vista so i would prefer to reformate the laptop and install Windows XP Professional(32 or 64 bits, dunno yet).
However I don't know if i have to do anything special for it, because this is my first notebook I've got and I only once had a laptop with drivers on a CD. Now i'm switching operating system i think i need some driver disc's for my webcam and stuff like that.
    I hope some1 can help me :)
    Thanks alot
BTW I'm dutch, so sorry for my English.

    > And i've got a legit license of XP Pro, though i dont understand what u mean with the sata driver things. Do u mean i need to ADD the drivers on the current Disc with windows XP?
The point is that your Windows XP CD does not contain the SATA drivers which are necessary to recognize the HDD during the XP setup procedure.
So you will have to include the SATA driver pressing the F6 button while the XP setup is loading. For this procedure an external FDD drive is necessary.
If you dont have a external USB FDD drive then you could create an Win XP CD and could include the SATA drivers using the free software called nLite.
One note; Use the forums search function for searching on other threads about the nLite and how to create such CD. I remember there are many threads in the forum about this theme.

  • Satellite A300-129 - Sound is muted and icon does not respond

    Dear all,
I am trying to switch on the sound of my Satellite A300-129 after I had muted it a couple of days ago, but the icon does not respond.
When I click on the right mouse button, I can go to sounds etc., but "Open volume mixer" does not respond either. I have also tried to restart the laptop a couple of times, but that did not help.
What can I do? Your help will be much appreciated.
    Heleen

    >How do I do that safely without risking losing sound forever?
LOL You will not lose anything for ever. :D in worst case you will have to reinstall the OS using the Toshiba recovery disk.
Access the device manager -> mark the sound card -> use delete button -> reboot the notebook
After new reboot the sound driver should reinstall again and should detect the sound card.

  • P200 bios crash how to use the crisis recovery mode?

    Hello!
I've got a problem with my Toshiba P200 laptop (PSPBOE). De laptop doesn't boot anymore, only when i press fn+B which means he boots in to crisis recovery mode. But now you have to create a disk with phlash16 + a bios.wph file. But i don't know which one i have tried 16 different versions of phlash16.exe with the usb fdd which he does read.
    I've used this bios file:
    http://be.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp?LNG=10&service=BE
Anybody who can tell me what im doing wrong?

It sounds like you have a Toshiba Europe model.  I would recomend you contact them or use the European forums.  I have not heard of a Fn+B function for the American models.  And it sounds like the BIOS flash procedure is different as well.

  • AC Adapter for Toshiba Satellite M40X-129

    Hello guys,
hope this is the correct forum to post my question in:
I have a Toshiba Satellite M40X-129 (Model No: PSM4XE-01600CGR). My AC-Adapter is buggered so I need to get a new one. Bought the machine in Germany, am now in Tasmania / Australia. Being in a remote area camp till April, I wont be able to go to a shop with my laptop to try and or figure out, what AC Adapter is suitable. We do have internet here as our only communication form, so it is quite important for me to sort that out.
Can anyone tell me, what kind of Adapter / power supply is suitable or where to look it up?
The one Ive been using before is a LITEON, Part No.: PA3432U-1AC3, Model No.: PA-1750-09, Input: 100-240V, 50-60Hz, 1.5A, Output: 19V, 3.95A.
Thanks for your help and have a nice day
    Peter

    Thanks for your answer Andrej.
Being in a remote area camp, I cant go to the shop with my old adapter, but I can get someone for me to go the shop, buy (or order) the adapter and chuck it on the next supply chopper.
I sent all the details posted above to my favorite shop and the lady answered me, as my laptop is an overseas one, it might be possible that the ones they have dont fit. Now I read about plug sizes etc. and thought I could send her some more information to verify, if the stuff they got in stock will do the job for my lap.

    Hi
You have to configure the single buttons.
This Toshiba button support pop up will appear if the pressed button was not configured.
So press the button and then assign the action, application.
You have to expand this menu pressing on the small arrow on the right.

  • My iphone is in recovery mode, the itunes and usb cable symble, is all data lost at this point or is it possible to recover some or all data on the phone?

My iphone is in recovery mode, the itunes and usb cable symble displayed, does this mean that all data is lost or is there some way to recover the data on the phone.

Once the Device is asking to be Restored with iTunes... it is too late to save anything...
To minimise loss... Connect to iTunes on the computer you Usually Sync with and Restore from the most recent Backup...

  • NB305-02P Attempt to create recovery media damaged format of USB drive?

Twice now, I've tried to created a recovery record using 16 Gb USB drives. Different makes of drive, one I have been using previously on an XP computer, works fine there. In both cases, the attempt to create the recovery record resulted in a USB drive that was unusable. The Creator program calls for the re-format of the USB drive, that fails, and then the drive is indicated in Windows as having zero capacity, plus it cannot be re-formatted by any method I've tried so far.
What I'd like most, of course, is a way to repair the failed drives. Failing that is there a specific method I can use, with a new drive, to avoid this problem?
    Thanks for any help!

    Hi egrivel,
As stated above, there is no option to create optical recovery media.  You can use a flash drive.  8G 16G I believe, but verify that when running the utility.  Make sure "copy the recovery partition" is checked.

  • Satellite M30X-129: Can recovery CD be run from an external drive?

My wifi appears to have packed up - recognises wireless networks nearby but won't connect to them - so I am trying to use the Product Recovery disc in the hope that this might restore the wifi.
However, the DVD Multi Drive is not working properly - the light flickers briefly to indicate some sort of activity but no disc shows up in My Computer. I'm thinking that if I buy the External Drive, I can run the Product Recovery disc from this.
Is the Toshiba External DVD SuperMulti Drive (PA3454U-1DV2) compatible with the Satellite M30X-129 P-M 735? Can Product Recovery be run from an external (bootable?) drive?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

    Hi
According to this Toshiba page the drive is compatible with your unit:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/options_and_accessories_search_by_model.jsp?servic e=EU&selSeries=-1&selFamily=2326&selCategory=2319&family=2326&selP roduct=98795
The fact is that only this boot device options are available: USB-FDD/HDD/ODD/LAN
I know that you can only boot from the external CD/DVD drive if the device support this option and the unit.
In my opinion to be100% sure you should ask the ASP for the opinion.
But know another question: Did you boot from the recovery CD to recover the OS?
If you want to recover the OS you have to boot from this CD and not to start it under Windows. Check it
