Toshiba Satellite M505-S4940 - Linux
I am using my laptop for school well here is the deal. I built a new computer, a $3000 desktop to be exact. So needless to say I needed windows on it. Well I only own one version of Windows 7 Pro and put it on my desktop so now my laptop has nothing. Now this is what I did. I installed ubuntu, I am not new to linux but I am not a expert either. My computer is overheating. 30 seconds after boot it will be on fire. Any ideas? I am also going to post over on ubuntu forums.
I am a student at DeVry University

Satellite M505-s4945 motherboard
Hello,
I have a Toshiba Satellite M505-s4945 with a death motherboard. My part is H000013180. I found a not expensive one, but its P/N is H000013190. Are they interchangeable? I want to buy it to replace mine, but I don't know if other parts are compatible with it or not, especially my LCD screen (LTN140AT04?). Please help. Thank you.

There's some of both part numbers available on eBay. As they're both for the M505 there's a good chance it will fit & work. But, I can't say for sure.

LINUX : Webcam mic non-functional on Toshiba Satellite T215D-S1150
I've been trying to get the webcam mic on my Toshiba Satellite T215D-S1150 notebook/netbook to work in Linux Mint 9 Isadora KDE 64-bit to no avail. My model has a Realtek ALC269 audio chipset combined with an ATI southbridge ( ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) (rev 40) ) using the "snd_hda_intel" kernel module. I've attempted using basically every combination of settings in "alsamixer" that makes sense. In addition to that, I've tried adding the "options snd-hda-intel model=" parameter in "/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf" starting with "basic" and trying every combination of "Input Source." I've also tried the "auto", "lenovo", "toshiba" and "3stack" models, but nothing works -- In each instance I get nothing when I try "arecord -t wav -f cd filename" and/or try-to-capture-sound/access-the-mic in eg. VLC Media Player or Skype where in the case of VLC I've tried "Open Capture Device..." where I've tried every possible audio device node with "Audio device name" and in the case of Skype I've tried "Skype Test Call."
My ALSA system information for the default model and the model "basic" respectively can be accessed here :
http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=5a7e986d7cad81213d2ef64f02ae478c7994c4d7
http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=f334a100b0c173875d838e57e42e7c23d98da8b7
Currently I'm at a loss as to what the problem is or what further action to take.
I'd be grateful for any assistance.
Thanks,
jdb2Most of the webcams support what is called 'UVCVideo' which is a generic video device; the generic video driver in the Linux kernel is able to support the webcam. Some manufacturers may put legacy cameras which requires a few extra steps from the customer's side.
Regarding the mic not working; audio/sound support is handled by the Linux kernel and the ALSA subsystem, http://www.alsa-project.org/ New audio hardware come with small variations which require equally small adaptations in ALSA. The laptop manufacturers tend not to help with this small information and it is up to the customers to inform the ALSA project.
For both devices, try out the latest version of Linux (such as the Ubuntu 10.04 distribution) in case these have been resolved from the work of other customers.
For the webcam, run the command 'lsusb' in a terminal window in order to identify the exact identification details. From those details it is possible to decide what to do next.
For the mic issue, if it is not resolved in Ubuntu 10.04, there is a process to extract the full hardware details of the sound card and use those details to help solve the problem.
You would need to execute the command
wget -O alsa-info.sh http://alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh && bash ./alsa-info.sh
and then post the resulting file to a forum to help you. This forum does not support attachments, so when you are prompted above to send the details to www.alsa-info.org, select Yes and post here the URL with those details. -
Toshiba Satellite A505-S6973 Windows Vista OS won's startup
I have a Toshiba Satellite A505-S6973 with Windows Vista OS.
Recently, the OS would not start up, it will stay at the "miscrososft corporation" logo page forever.
I tried F8 to start as Safe Mode, the safe mode started but will load some files, and stay on that page forever.
I tried launch the System Repair, the report is as following:

I tried to use System Restore, but it tells that it did not find a restore time that is good.
The main concern right now for me is to get my personal data and files from the computer. I still have other computer to use, so I am not so worried about start up the computer. I want to find out a way to first back up my personal data and files from the computer to an external devices, then try to fix the computer. Thank you.Satellite A505-S6973

Yes, that's exactly what you should do first. Later we'll try to resurrect Windows. This is my favorite way nowadays.
1. Prepare a thumb drive formatted in FAT32. It doesn't need to be large. This stuff only occupies 130 MB on mine.
2. Download UNetbootin to create the thumb drive.
3. Download a Puppy Linux .iso file for the operating system.
4. Run Unetbootin-windows-xxx.exe and point it to the Lupu-xxx.iso file to create a bootable drive.
5. When you power on your computer, hold down the F12 key. That should give you the opportunity to choose the boot drive.
6. For some tips, scroll down to the following sections at this web page.

I have audio working, but not the microphone on my toshiba satellite
Hi there, I'm a newbie to the arch way, but I'm not a newbie to linux, however I'm pretty stumped with this one (I'm not used to having to look after everything, but I'm loving it!) I have a Toshiba Satellite C650D-10W, and it has a very annoying soundcard built into it. I have the sound working, thankfully, however I cannot get the inbuilt mic to function. Some info here:

looks like we've got the same chipset.
one stupid pdf-file found on hp.com sais that the codec is ADI 1984AJCPZ High Definition CODEC, but I can't be sure...
i tried different model= parameters to snd-hda-intel module, but nothin helps
i can capture external jack-in microphone only if external jack-out is free (which is completely stupid for home audio studio experiencing)
internal phones are not mute automatically until jack-in freed (but i can easily mute them in alsamixer instead)
if anyone find a workaround or anything useful, please report here or use my contacts -
Toshiba Satellite C40T-ASP4268FM Recovery messed up, windows 8 re install
I bought this laptop Toshiba Satellite C40T-ASP4268FM, practically new, plastic protectors still attached. Tried to remove microsoft account by factory reset, because there is no other way to delete one. After that it asked me to check and restore windows and froze on 40% after several attempts I somehow managed to get back on windows, but then after shutdown froze after welcome screen. I decided to install linux,it prompted a message that I could not install it. I tried to go back to windows 8, I have a DVD with an ISO I downloaded from Microsoft page before the release of 8.1, but I can´t install it because is a wrong Key. So I assume It would be the same with windows 8.1. It does not boot a DVD with windows 7, So I pretty much ended up with an expensive paper weight. How can I re install windows 8? I'm Mexican and so is the laptop.

How do I install Ubuntu on a Toshiba Satellite L670D-102
Hello
I have been trying to load Ubuntu 10.10 (tried both AMD64 and i386 versions of Desktop Edition) onto a Satellite L670D-102 using a Live CD. The CD spins for a while, there is some activity on the hard drive and then I get a flashing white cursor (a hyphen) on a black screen. I left it all night and it remained the same. I tried with a 'live' usb and again, no boot. The cds and usb work in other machines running both amd and intel cpus.
The sort of questions that spring to mind are:-
Is there some security or other setting within the cmos that prevents anything other than Windows being loaded?
Are Toshiba simply anti- Linux and I need a new machine?
Do I need a special bios to run Ubuntu?
Any help in resolving the issue would be welcome.Hi
I use a Toshiba Satellite L655. It came with a Win7. The first thing I did after buying it was to wipe out Win7 and install ubuntu 10.10 on the entire hard disk (not a dual boot or Wubi install). Now I want to try out ubuntu 11.04 beta from a live usb and I am trying to change the boot order. The laptop doesn't boot from the usb drive. I am unable to enter the BIOS. I have tried pressing ESC, F2 etc while switching on the laptop. So far, I have not been able to access the BIOS setup.
I have tried googling and I read about Toshiba's "legacy-free" laptops. But am not sure if mine is such a one. Now, I don't have Win at all in my laptop. I have only ubuntu 10.10. I need to access the BIOS setup and change the boot order so that my laptop boots from the USB drive. How do I do this?
Any guidance would be welcome. -
Toshiba Satellite Laptop -- Won't power on or boot..
I can't get my Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5881 (model #: PSLC8U-00D010) to power up or boot. It is plugged in and the power light is on. I've tried re-seating the memory, hard drive and battery. I've also tried plugging in a monitor to see if it was the display. So far, no luck.
Any suggestions? Do these symptoms sound like the power supply, hard drive or mother board?
Thanks. It still won't boot so I bought a different computer. The funny part is my A45-S150 is 8 years old and works very well and runs with a Linux Opsys.

Toshiba Satellite L870-177 graphics card change?
A question about the Toshiba Satellite L870-177
Can you replace the graphics card in the laptop?
Currently, an AMD Radeon HD 7670M, 1GB, HDMI is inside and find this a bit .... modest, so I would like to replace it with a better
is that possible? Have often read in other forums that you can not replace graphics card, so the question

To elaborate for others what you hopefully already knew about your setup.
Alot more trouble than it's worth since the GPU is name brand but frequently customized for the PC maker and even further customized for the particular chipset / cpu setup.
Tampering with those values is possible to varying degrees using purpose built LINUX distro's however the modifications are community based and anecdotal without manufacturers validation, the alterations can be damaging and Toshiba will be unsympathetic for rendering warranty assistance if they detect your alterations.
And that is why the process won't be as simple as upgrading a desktop GPU with a compatible boxed CPU.
I applaud your question and I'll spare you from elaborating why you want better graphics or which games you're unsatisfied playing since your dis-satisfaction and performance desires are uniquely your own.
Before you consider the tempting unsupported mod's I mentioned, you want to ensure your AMD's turbo is running full speed in the overclocked but unsupported manner AMD's are famous for and should determine if your games perform satisfactorily by overclocking the CPU's clock.
In respect for Toshiba, I'll avoid linking to the sites that describe overclocking AMD's since I personally find it unnecessary and the web has endless pages on the matter that you can assess yourself.
AS you suspect, overclocking assassinates your warranty but a gaming purist such as yourself already knows this and is unconcerned about warranties when striving for the best gaming experience possible.
Ask your question often enough and it will invite challenges as to why you find the card insufficient and eventually raise contemptuous advice to just live with it and tamper your expectations.
I refuse to pass judgement since your computer is yours and you're free to squeeze all the performance you can as long as you remain aware of your responsibilities when doing so. -
Can't start X with Toshiba Satellite L850-1L1, Ati Radeon 7600M Series
I did a fresh install on my new laptop Toshiba Satellite L850-1L1 following the beginners' guide.
I am able to boot only with nomodeset in the kernel options.
Then I can't startx. It hangs after "loading extension GLX".
Instead of nomodeset, I tried as suggested in other posts vga=733 or vga=ask oracpi_backlight=vendor or video=SVIDEO-1:d
The most I can get is a blind login. This time startx displays something (not understandable) and the system does not hang (I can switch to another console).
As suggested in the guide I post some information:
$ wgetpaste ~/.xinitrc
File does not exist
$ wgetpaste /etc/X11/xorg.conf
File does not exist
$ wgetpaste /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Have you had any luck with the proprietary driver (Catalyst)?
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AMD_Catalyst
I tried, but the guide is out of date:
This article or section is out of date.
Reason: catalyst-utils is not anymore in the official repositories. Possibly one has to install catalyst-total from aur to get the same, but I'm not sure
And installing from AUR and having to rebuild at every kernel update is a nightmare.
Maybe the only chance is trying to install directly from AMD.
I'm using Arch since 5 years on a laptop with Nvidia graphic card, that died last week. I didn't know that ATI was so problematic with Linux.
Hope to find a fix, otherwise I have to switch to another Linux distribution, and I really don't want to -
Need a boot disc & drives: Toshiba Satellite C650D-008
I deleted the backup partition that had the drives for my Toshiba Satellite C650D-008.
(To long a story to explain why.)
I had used the computer for a Linux O/S.
Now I want to load a retail -off the self- version of Windows 7 I purchased.
If possible I would like a link to a web-site were I can download a boot disc and drivers for free.
(preferably without the bells and whistles, media etc. )
I have very poor bandwidth here so a bittorrent might be the best bet, along with hash code numbers.
The aforementioned machine is a Canadian Market model, and there does not seem to be a source
for drivers from Toshiba Canada's download site. (The Toshiba model I have is not shown on other
Toshiba download sites.) ......... Thanks Tom. ROC

Best to order the recovery discs by calling 800-663-0378. You can upgrade Home Premium in just minutes this way.
Upgrade to another edition of Windows 7 by using Windows Anytime Upgrade
You'll find all the downloads for that model here. If you insist upon installing a retail version of Windows, don't be surprised when you have difficulty getting things to work right.

I have a Toshiba Satellite R15 laptop that I got off of ebay. This laptop is the kind with a flip-around screen so that you can use it in pen/tablet/stylus mode. When I got it, I installed a fresh copy of Windows XP SP3 on it, and installed all the necessary drivers from the Toshiba web site. Also I made sure to get the latest Wacom pen driver from the Wacom web site. Also, I got all the windows updates.
I can normally calibrate the display and the pen just fine using the Wacom tool in the windows control panel. I have the computer configured so that, when I flip the screen into tablet mode, the screen goes into a portrait-aspect configuration (tall instead of wide). This works fine and I can also calibrate the screen fine in this mode.
But if I hibernate and resume the machine (in "tablet" mode with the screen flipped around), after resume, everything has gone wonky with the pen. First of all, the pen moves as if the machine were in landscape mode still: An X motion of the pen produces a Y motion of the cursor, for example. If, then, I flip the screen back to regular-laptop mode, the X/Y direction is correct again, but, the calibration is way off, the cursor is two inches to the right of the pen. If I try to calibrate again when it's in this state, the pen is still off by two inches.
I did a google search, but, the only results I see are for people encountering this problem under Linux. I don't see any solutions for Windows XP users.
I emailed Wacom and they said to ask Toshiba. I can't email toshiba (no support email in their contact page), so I'm asking here. Can anyone help?I ended up fixing this, by formatting the computer from scratch and installing Windows 7 instead of Windows XP. :-)
This works but there is a limitation: There are no updated Win7 video drivers from Intel for the Toshiba Sattellite R15. So you have to hack the XP drivers to work. Here are the instructions on how to hack the XP drivers to work on the Toshiba Satellite R15 running Windows 7:

But after that, everything is fine on the tablet. -

Last edited by Eragon (2007-04-16 11:07:05)Hi Eragon,
I have been having a lot of trouble with my Toshiba Satellite A50, but I have nearly got things working.
Here are some steps you should go through.
1) Update your kernel to 2.6.20-7 (sudo pacman -Sy kernel26)
2) Install acpi (sudo pacman -S acpi acpid)
3) Set the acpi daemon to run at startup (sudo nano /etc/rc.conf and add acpid to your daemons)
4) In the rc.conf file, add toshiba_acpi to the MODULES=() section.
5) Restart, OR manually sudo /etc/rc.d/acpid start and sudo modprobe toshiba_acpi
6) Download, install and configure FnFX
Other tips:
- acpi_listen is a good tool to use for monitoring / setting up function keys
- use dmesg if modprobing doesn't work to try and find errors
- the program 'keytouch' is good for keys (so I am told, I am trying to use it, but having difficulty doing everything I want. It looks as thought it should be easy so you may have more luck)
- there is a great guide in the gentoo wiki for setting up media keys (just googe linux media keys and you will probably find it)
- forums and the IRC are your friend. i am greatful to all the people who helped me setting up my laptop
