Toshiba SSD vs Samsung SSD and inconsistent read/write speeds

I've heard that some of the 2011 Airs are shipping with Toshiba SSDs where others have the Samsung SSDs. Apparently the Toshiba ones are considerably slower and are more likely to be in the 13" models where the Samsung SSDs are more likely to be in the 11" models. I was curious if anyone out there has an 11" model with the 256GB option, and if so, which SSD did you get in yours? Are you looking to get a response from Apple here? If so you're going to be left wanting. This is a user-to-user discussion forum, if you wish to communicate with Apple you'll need to get on the phone with AppleCare or bring it into the store.
You can also return the machine and buy a new one, it's a 50/50 chance.
I have the Toshiba drive in my 13" MBA with the 128GB SSD. A co-worker has the same model machine with a Samsung drive.
As Apple doesn't promise a minimum SSD read/write speed I don't really see any justification for them to offer an exchange on a unit unless it's defective (which this would not be considered defective in their eyes). Thus my recommendation for the return. The other problem is there's no discernible markings on the outside of the box that indicate which drive is in the machine, plus Apple doesn't let you "try before you buy."
Even given the slower Toshiba speeds, I'd be really curious to see someone max out the capabilities of either drive.

Turns out this is a fairly well known windows 8.1 issue that has been plaguing users since at least 2013 and there is no one simple fix, so it may not be *entirely* hp's fault; but I've had two of these laptops, both the same model, the first one needing to be returned and exchanged for an entirely unrelated issue (hardware failure: ethernet port nonfunctional with lights stuck on). Both are refurbished. Both have been extreemly slow and unresponsive even compared to a lesser Brazos powered laptop I had before, but I've only recently decided to investigate why.
So if there is something HP specific going on here, I hope there is one simple fix. My average response time has gone up as far as well over a minute (>60,000ms), so I may be an outlier case here compared to the typical windows 8.1 hardrive responsiveness/bandwidth problem.
Edit: there is a case with another HP pavilion laptop (intel powered though, so it may be an intel storage driver issue described in the first link) being much, much worse.

Are my read/write speeds up to snuff? MacPro Octo 2.26

What are typical and good read/write speeds I can expect on my MacPro Octo 2.26 10GB Ram.
According to iStat, on a simple copy, I get about 65-70 MB/s read from a WD 640 caviar black internal bay, and 65-70 MB/s write to a WD 640 caviar black internal bay. Are there any apple docs that explain what we can expect, how to enhance? You can skip RAID talk, this is just basic stock computer and best operating procedures I'm speaking of. Thanks!
The OS is on a WD 74 Raptor drive.

Drives keep evolving.
It depends on what you copy, and what matters, or, where if any place is there a bottleneck?
Newer 10K VR drives maybe, boot drive is important.
SSDs definitely boost system.
Isolating I/O between drives (system, scratch, media, etc) really helps so all the work and I/O is spread out.
Newer 1TB and above drives with 500GB platters and higher density, too.
Best differs from video editing, to mild editing of files, to very heavy work in CS4.
Also, keeping your drives to 50% free space, or what I do for some drives is short-stroke so I really only use one outer partition to work with and use the rest for junk and inactive archive/backup and storage.
iStat - never used it and definitely not for benchmarking drives.

Thunderbolt drive Read/Write speeds have significantly dropped

I got a new Western Digital Thunderbolt VelociRaptor drive. When I did speed tests on it using "BlackmagicDesign" Speed Test software initially (when empty) the drive was giving me read and write speeds of 350 MB/s. Now however I have 90% of the drive occupied with data and the read/write speeds have dropped significantly to 230 MB/s. Any ideas as to why and how I could improve this?

Read/Write speeds with Airport Extreme and USB Hard Drives

Anybody know how fast the read/write speeds are with a USB hard drive and the Airport Extreme Base Station?
My Setup
I have a 17 MBP (2010) and a 13 MBP (2011) - no SSD's
MBP generally connect via 802.11n 5Ghz with a very strong signal
Gigabit connection on a Windows Desktop
I have a variety of external drives (7200, 5400, Drobo) at varying capacity (320GB, 2TB, 5.6TB)
Goals
Backup: Time machine
Backup: File copies of pictures and home videos (greater than 1GB files)
Backup: Crashplan
File sharing: Aperture libraries--not sure if that is possible or practical. That is something that I need to research further...but on the off chance people have experience with it.

G710 hard drive read/write speed

Hello,
I have a brand new Ideapad G710 with 1TB Serial ATA 2, 5400rpm with advertised speed of 3 Gb/s (= 384MB/s).
I am running Windows 7 ultimate x64 with SP1.
When I test hard drive read/write speed (I used CrystalDiskMark) I get results of about 100MB/s, which is 3-4 times slower than it should be.
I am not running any resource heavy applications (Resource monitor reports Disk I/O to be 0 most of the time in idle state). I have 3 partitions, each with 16-32GB paging file size and all are >90% empty. All partitions have been defragmented before testing.
Is this normal? Are there any lenovo drivers or utilities than I might be missing or that can slow/speed this?

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
The results that you got while running CrystalDiskMark is normal. The SATA 2 (3Gb/s) that you mentioned is actually the SATA interface support, not the actual read/write performance.
If you have a Seagate HDD (eg. ST10000LM024), check these specs
From the above specs, the unit has a cache that has a read/write max speed of 145 MB/s but there are environmental factors and power requirements to get this speed (eg. read/write speed on AC power is differente from battery power).
AFAIK, if this is the specs that is design for this drive, there's no way to speed it up.
If you're planning to upgrade in the future though, you can get an SSD for faster read/write.

Loss of read/write speeds fusion drive

hey guys!
little confused, when i first unboxed my iMac i was getting Write speed of 320.0 MB/s and a truly amazing Read speed of 715.0 MB/s a mate popped round this morning and i thought i would show off and show him the speeds, i ran the same benchmark and i got Write speed of 310.0 MB/s and a Read speed of 519.0 MB/s
i ran the test a few times and even rebooted the system...
where has the speed gone lol, i mean... im not complaining... its still stupidly fast, just wondering where it could of gone

Just a guess here but when you unboxed your iMac everything was on just the SSD. Now some of your data has also been put on the SSD and your speed test feels the effects of core services moving things back to the HDD. Just a guess.

Macbook Pro 1.1 how to improve read/write speed

I am looking to improve the read/write performance of a 2006 2.16 Intel Core Duo Macbook Pro with 2gb RAM (the max), that I use on a specific job in a specific workflow.
In the workflow there are three retouchers using three different MBPs and transferring files via Ethernet network to a fourth MBP (the one in question) which is used as a dropbox, if you like.
So the MBP in question has no applications running. Files are saved to it and opened from it and saved back to it.
How can I improve read/write speed on this MBP under these conditions?
Would installing an SSD be the answer? Or is it really a processor issue and there's nothing to be done? I figure RAM doesn't really come into it, but in any case 2GB is the max this model can accept.

An SSD would definitely improve read/write speed. However, depending on capacity needed, are you sure you want to sink the money into this machine? Start here:

I suggest you leave it like that then. Benchmarkings are all synthetic ones. The real life performance is what we need. There are many benchmark enhancement techniques other SSD players in the market improvise on their product so that it's sell off like anything. At the end of the day, it all depends on what you're getting out of your SSD .

Hard drive read write speeds are too slow

I was having an issue with 17inch macbook pro. was getting 4.0mb/s read write speed tops. and smart status failure.
So i replaced the drive. The new drive is a 7200 RPM 500GB WD drive. I'm getting 12.0mb/s on top speed. Computer feels a little quicker but still slow overall.
I ran this test on a fresh install of snow leopard.
Is it just me or do those read/write speeds on the new drive still seem slow?
2007 17inch macbook pro with 2gigs of ram.

Required read write speeds

hey
i'm currently in the process of building a NAS and have been previously working with a firewire hard drive box..
my question is simple (at least i think so).....what are speeds that are typically seen when editing with firewire boxes....i was using a 800 firewire box and i know real world situations you don't get 800 mb/s....
i edit HD footage (captured AIC 1080i @ 60fps) and this new NAS box that i'm building says it can achieve anywhere between 22-45mb/s read/write speeds
will this be fast enough?

Macbook pro 2011 HD read/write speed

My 2 and half year old macbook pro seemed little slow so i did read/write speed test and it shows about 45MB/sec read/write speed. It is normal for a old 5400rpm hard disk. I have mountain lion.

Yes, that's probably about normal for an older, slow drive.

I generally pretty much say the same thing as other here with respect to you probably won't notice the difference... with the one caveat being exactly what you happen to be doing. Opening applications, web browsing, playing any games that run well enough, etc. are all things that you're not likely to notice any difference with. However, if you're doing something which relies pretty much on the drive speed as the single bottleneck... then you might notice (as you have). I probably wouldn't be rendering video on an Air simply because of the power that requires, but if that's you're only option, then that's what you use. So the "average" user probably would never notice the difference. Indeed, the average user probably has no idea there are different drives. In your case, you're doing one of the things that depends nearly entirely on the drive speed (as the processor can easily outpace the drive).
The problem is that Apple does not say that you'll get an SSD with "X" transfer speed. They just say you'll get an SSD. Even identifying the speed of the SATA bus (1.5, 3, 6GB) doesn't give any indication of the SSD's actual performance. Basically, so far as Apple is concerned, the machine is in spec.
Now, in your case, you're comparing two identical machines (they have different SSDs, but Apple considers them identical models) and getting significantly different performance results. Given that, you may have some ground to address it with Apple. So far as you're concerned, your machine is running significantly slower than another... which would imply a problem. There should not be any significant performance differences between identical models. I would suggest either giving Apple a call or visiting your local Apple store just to see how they address it (No harm in trying, right?). It's clear you're not asking for the faster drive just because you know there is one out there. You actually have real usage experience with significant performance differences.
I'm not suggesting they will replace it for you, but it might be worth a try. They would need to replace the drive for you as it's not considered a user replacable part (even though it's easier to remove than a hard drive in the MacBook Pros).

HT1549 How do I read write to an external drive? I am under admin account and cannot read write to any folder on the external drive.

I have a Mac Mini with Mavericks installed, as well as a PC running Windows 7. I want to be able to read write from both computers to an external drive on the Mac. I created 2 folders on the drive and named them Movies, and TV Shows. The content of those folders are the respective files. I set up both folders to be shared on the Mac under system preferences, and then mapped the drives on the PC. I also created a user account with admin privileges on the mac that matched my PC. I then copied a Music folder to the root drive instead of using external, and set up sharing as well. File Sharing is selected for all three folders, however the music folder is the only one which allows me to change the permissions to allow read write to everyone, or to create individual user accounts to connect with read write permissions. The options to add users or change permissions are simply grayed out for the two folders on the external drive, so not only can I not write from my PC, but I can’t even do it on the Mac with the administrative user logged in. The folder on the root drive is fine but I cannot make any changes to the external drive at all. Get info for any folder on drive shows read only. SMB and AFP are selected for all folders under options. I can access all three folders from PC, but can only add files to the Music folder. I cannot do anything from either computer to the folders on the external drive.

Try Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility - select the drive and run Repair Disk.
