Toshiba Tecra R840-00L: Recovery Media & 2010 MS Full Office ??

Hello;
1. I've just bought another Toshiba Notebook: Tecra R840-00L.
I'm going through the 20-page abbreviated User Information Guide supplied with the unit.
I haven't started the computer yet.
There're a couple of concerns, and I'd very much appreciate your expert advice:
2. Since the unit doesn't come with a "Recovery Media", I need to create one.
    a. How do I do that ??
    b. At what point in the the start-up process should I do that ??
3. The notebook comes with the pre-installed Reduced Functionality version of 2010 MS Office.
I bought the 2010 Full version of MS 2010 Office.
    c. Do I need to un-install the pre-installed version before I install the Full version of Office ??
    d. Does the Full version automatically remove the pre-installed one ??
4. The unit also comes with Fingerprint sensor, and Face Recognition sensor with Web Camera.
    e. Do I have to use either or both right away ??
    f. Can I wait till I become more familiar with the unit, or even don't use them at all ??
Thank you.

Hard to tell what you're talking about. Probably it's Microsoft Office 2010.
The product key on the bottom of your laptop is for Microsoft Windows (not Microsoft Office). And it's not needed because Windows is preactivated.
Probably the product key for Office is among the other papers that accompanied the computer.
    Maybe these help.

  • Recovery Media for Tecra R840 - What size USB or DVD?

What size USB (or DVD media) is needed to create the basic recovery media?  I saw the post for the user who also had MS Office 2010, but what size USB (or DVDs) would be needed to create the basic recovery media (ie, without the Office suite) - a search of the manual failed to provide the answer?
    Thanks - FB

I believe the Recovery Media Creator should specify if you continue to go through it.

  • I need recovery media for an old Toshiba but apparently can't order it. Help!

The other day my TOSHIBA laptop - MODEL # PSM43U-01700P - must've got a virus or something because it started to slow and was unable to open some programs. Thinking the computer was about to go, i started saving my personal files onto a disk, and just after doing so the computer Blue screened and now upon start up it stops and says that it's missing a file <Windows root>\System 32\ ntoskrnl.exe and must have it added in order to continue. I of course, however, didn't realize that upon buying the computer years ago that i should have created my own recovery disks, thinking foolishly that the company would always have this media on hand to order should the need for it arise(Plus i doubt i would've done it properly since i'm not really a computer genius, surprise, surprise)
    Anyway. . .
My problem is that when i tried to order the recovery media for this ancient model, i was told that Toshiba no longer carries this models media at all. So i was just wondering if possibly there's a similar model's media that Toshiba does carry that i'd be able to order instead of this model's that would still work with my computer. I was able to do this with an old DELL I had, and was hoping the same thing was possible with a TOSHIBA.
I'm crossing my fingers here guys. Hope to hear back from you. I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks.

  • Toshiba Recovery Media Creator Error Code 020150-20-00000000 (Satallite L755-S5308)

We just received 2 - Toshiba Satallite L755-S5308 Laptops over the thanksgiving holiday from Best Buy and the first thing we normally do after powering up the laptops is to create our recovery disc sets to DVD's. However, both laptops are giving the same error message on both machines at the same point in the creation of the Recovery DVD Disc 4 when using the Toshiba Recovery Media Creator. Please See Eror Message Below:
Failed To Read The Following File.
    D:\ZZImages\ZZImages\Preinst18.swm
    (Error Code: 020150-20-00000000)
If you are getting this error message then you will not be able to restore your laptop factory software and operating system (Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit)

You could create an image of the entire HDD onto another drive, but this can be a headache for a lot of users and would require specialized hardware and a HDD enclosure. As such, it's not a feasible solution.
Oh,come now.  You can buy 'specialized hardware' -- an HDD enclosure -- from a widely known online computer store for $12.99 with free shipping, and a spare plain old Seagate 500 GB hard drive (nothing very special about it, except that it costs more since the flooding in Thailand) running at 7200 rpm from a different widely known online computer store for $99.99 (shipping extra).  Seagate gives away its branded version of Acronis True image for free.  It is not that hard to use.   I believe the L755 has a 500 GB 5400 rpm hard disc drive, so this Seagate may make the laptop run faster under some conditions.   Creating an image of the laptop HDD onto this 2nd HDD mounted in the enclosure may take hours, but consider the only other alternative, below:
Anyone who thinks that solution is not feasible can just wait until their one and only hard disc drive fails or develops a software problem.    Without usable recovery discs, the machine must be dropped off or mailed to a service center.  Compare the waiting and the expense to have someone else solve that kind of problem with the effort and expense of preventing it.   If you don't mind being without your computer for a few days or weeks, go for the simple way.
By the way, even the best home-burned optical discs are prone to develop unexpected failures after they are created.  I've never had a factory pressed optical disc properly stored develop a late failure.  If these work out of the box, they work a couple of years later.   The technologies behind a home-burned disc and a factory-pressed disc are different.
Getting back to my original point, should your 1st HDD fail, and should you have a 2nd HDD with the cloned image of the 1st HDD, your recovery takes as long as it takes to remove HDD #1, installed HDD #2, and reboot your laptop, involving about 5 minutes of your time and perhaps a small screwdriver.  You can test whether or not your cloned backup works the same way, by installing HDD #2 and seeing if it works.   If you only have a single HDD, there is no good way to test your recovery media, since they overwrite your original HDD.

  • Toshiba shipping policy/process for recovery media - bizarre and expensive.

Is anyone else upset that Toshiba charges nearly twenty five dollars to mail us something we already essentially own?
"There is no charge for the software itself, for which customers already own licenses, and as of 10/1/10 the shipping and handling charges for delivery of recovery media in the US is $24.95 for DVD media or $34.95 for USB sticks."
Also, for such an exorbitant price for getting such a small, lightweight package physically to the customer, I don't think it's out of line to expect Toshiba to be OVERNIGHTING the disks....but, it appears Toshiba does not do this, either; my email told me that while "most orders ship the next business day," I should expect to wait 5-7 business days to receive them. Clearly, they are NOT overnighting this.
Worse yet -- when I checked the tracking of my package, it appears, for some bizarre reason, Toshiba has elected to ship my disks from North Carolina to Georgia (via DHL?) and then, from GA, back up the eastern seaboard to Baltimore, Maryland, where I live.....via the US postal service. This must be some "one size fits all" mailing scheme, which I object to very strongly, given I've laid out $24.95 for what ACTUALLY should only cost a couple bucks, tops. It's ridiculous to ship a package from North Carolina, to GEORGIA, then Maryland. That's wasting several days to ship something in the WRONG DIRECTION. And using two companies to do it. Other companies I do business with don't do this....why does Toshiba? It is idiotic. I object to it because for $24.95, this could be overnighted to me, directly from North Carolina to Maryland, and Toshiba would STILL pocket a profit.
We as customers should demand better service than this....every day without the computer is like a week, and we're paying for top not service here!

The Recovery discs cost 24.95 is already a package which is for the disc and the shipping. Normally the standard shipping time is 7 -10 business days because when a customer orders a recovery disc, that is the only time that toshiba creates a recovery disc for the laptop that is, according to the tech that I have spoken to. Some toshiba laptops does not come with a Recovery disc because the laptop already had a Hidden Recovery Partition that would allow you to create your own recovery disc and perform the recovery process without needing a recovery disc. So generally speaking, getting the RACD  would depend on the model of the laptop that you have or if the laptop's hard drive is being replaced

  • Won't boot from Toshiba Recovery Media; Will boot from Win 8 builder DVD

    Satellite L855-S5309, Windows 8, 64-bit
Created 2 sets of Windows 8 Recovery Media using Toshiba Recovery Media Creator.  First set a year ago, created a new set yesterday.
The laptop will not boot to either set (DVD 1).   The DVD is bootable in another machine.  EUFI is grayed out.
Tried a Windows 8 DVD store bought.  It booted from this DVD.
The big question:  Why won't the Toshiba laptop see its own DVD it created for recovery?
Win 8 Repair DVD - boots from USB drive but won't see DVD files on drive.  Is this the image?
Do I need to order the recovery media?

  • How Reliable Is Toshiba Recovery Media Creator?

Is there any way to test the disks without doing a reinstall?
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Toshiba provides very little bloatware compared to a lot of manufacturers. Also like most other majour manufacturer's, Toshiba does not provide full install disks, just the ability to create recovery media. He cannot do a clean install unless he has access to media through other channels.

  • USB recovery media from Toshiba for Windows 7 doesn´t work

    Hi,
Recently as my laptop Potégé was slow I reinstalled Windows without using Toshiba recovery disks. Now I can't activate Windows 7 (64 bits), so I ordered a USB recovery media from Toshiba. I tried to use it but it doesn't work. I turn off the laptop, turn it on again pressing F12, -with the USB plugged to the laptop- and when I press HDD recovery, the system just takes me to Windows as usual, without reinstalling. Any thoughts on how to reinstall?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi,
Are you getting a boot option menu when you press f12?  Have you tried going into BIOS to check your boot order?  Usually f2 or DEL will get you to BIOS, or at the bottom of the boot option menu (which I assume is f12).  Once you are in BIOS, check that your USB drive is above the others in the boot order and save your configuration and reboot.  If you are still having a problem, you might check to see how many USB devices you have plugged in, or chained, and remove the ones that are not necessary because they could interfere with booting to your USB drive.  If you are using a USB hub, you might try putting the usb key into a different slot to give it priority over the other USB devices on boot up.  The highest priority slot on a USB hub might be the one closest to the USB cable that plugs in to your laptop's USB port.

  • Toshiba purchased W7 recovery media for C50-A has multiple issues, totally weird---what to do?

First I ordered the recovery 'disk' and they sent me the usb flash.I installed it in my laptop to go back to W7 after a tech who replaced my HD installed 8.1 which I did 'not' want. So  I installed from usb..BUT.....First the tobisha service station is deader than a doornail and not working.Right off the bat it would only install updates off and on.Half of them fail the first time.It will show installing updates when actually no updates ae being installed.90% of the time I get a 'toshiba provided IE 10 has stopped responding.Back and forward button work only about 50% of the time.  Clicking on close program buttons or cancel dont work.Trying to download IE 11 as either standard and adm user wont work and aborts...saying it cant find  user file. Most of my Function keys dont work. The only things I have dowloaded since installing are Avast and Malware bytes and these issues existed 'Before' I installed those..No, I do not have any virusus. No, none of the ms provided 'fixes' have wored to fix update program. No, runing sf/scan to fix any errors shows no errors. So what the hell?....the recovery media made this special order W7 even buggier than it was when I first got it..and it was plenty buggy when I got it. I am done done done with toshiba....second piece of **bleep** laptop I have bought in the past 3 years and the HD on both have gone bad at a year and half.

post your full model and part number! You may already know this: f2 to reach biosbios for windows 7 is secure boot disabled and advanced boot options set to CSMBios setting for W 8 and W8.1 secure boot enabled and Advanced boot options set to UEFIThese bios settings may need changed back to work for windows 7 your tech may have changed them to install windows 8  you may have problems if they are not changed back. On your last post I put this information:If you have the Toshiba recovery usb for Windows 7 INSTRUCTIONS:First - Important Bios changes when changing from Windows 8 to Windows 7:Completely shut down laptop (Shut down Windows 8 while pressing the Shift key to completely power off.) then restart computer and hold f2 when the screen goes black and wait for the bios setup utility to launch.Select advanced, then system configuration, then boot modeUEFI and CSM or legacy  (UEFI for Windows 8 and CSM or legacy for windows 7)For windows 7 change to CSM or Legacy mode.On the some models you may have to enable ro disable the secure boot before it will let you change the advanced boot mode to from UEFI to CSM.second -Also in bios setup utility select - Security, then Secure Boot, then you have to disable secure boot for windows 7.Third -While in the bio's change boot order to boot from your usb recovery first and the hard drive last.                        You will need to delete all partitions before installing windows 7 this is done in the forth step.Forth - Insert your windows 7 disc or USB and select custom install, your partitions should show up - click on each one and below you will see advanced drive options, click that and you will have options to format - format each one, then delete each one. You will be left with one raw partition, select to install and windows will do the rest while installing the operating system. post your results! Sometimes you do get a bad copy of the recovery media and Toshiba has sent out a replacement before.

  • Getting New Hard disk from Toshiba for E45t-A4100 . Do I still need recovery media

    Hi,
My hard drive crashed and after the online troubleshooting was directed to go for a new hard drive which I did as the laptop is in warranty.
However I am asked to get a recovery media too(as I do not have one created earlier).
My query is will the new hard drive not come with windows preinstalled. What extra will the recovery media have to help me. (Sorry if the questions sound dumb)
    Thanks

New hard drive is blank, recovery media is needed.
If the drive you have will load in safe mode you could try to burn your own recovery media, if not you will have to order recovery media.
