Total cpu utilization percentage diagnostic removed from Windows 2008 MP?
SCOM 2012 SP1 environment running the Windows Server 2008 Operating System Management Pack, version 6.0.7026.0
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=9296
We had a server that had high CPU utilization. We were able to figure out what process was causing the high CPU using some remote commands, but I am used to seeing this in the health explorer state change events view.
I looked into health explorer but there is no data.
http://i.imgur.com/eArmCM2.jpg
I then notice that in this MP, there are 2 CPU monitors
http://i.imgur.com/I9eBN4G.jpg
The first monitor shown is disabled by default, but it is this monitor that contains the diagnostic to list the top CPU consuming processes
http://i.imgur.com/tLgq9at.jpg
The CPU monitor that is enabled by default has no diagnostic tasks associated to it
http://i.imgur.com/AKAKOP9.jpg
While I have the ability to create my own diagnostic task, I would rather not, as it requires me to enter my own command or script.
I liked the fact that the CPU monitor would list the top consuming processes, as this was useful troubleshooting information.
Does anyone know why this diagnostic is not included in the new version of this monitor? I cannot find any information in the release notes.
Is there any reason I should think twice about disabling the default monitor, and setting an override to enable to “legacy” monitor that has the diagnostic task built in?
I can confirm that the other OS versions have the single CPU monitor with diagnostics set to run by default. For Windows Server 2008 R2 I have created a sample management pack which enables this functionality which is available at:
http://www.systemcentercentral.com/download/re-enable-processor-diagnostic-windows-2008-management-pack/.

Hello Everyone,
I need your assisstance in one of the issues with Mail Notification Alert generated by SCOM.
Mail notification received as below:
Alert: Total CPU Utilization Percentage is too high
Severity: 2
ServerName:Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard - The threshold for the Processor\% Processor Time\_Total performance counter has been exceeded. The values that exceeded the threshold are: 97.091921488444015% CPU and a processor queue length of 16.
Last modified by: System
The Alert was generated by "Total CPU Utilization Percentage"
But the problem with the above mail notification is it doesn't mentions about the affected server. So I would like to know how to tweak the monitors to provide the server name into it.
Thanks & Regards,
VROANHi
You can add alert source to the email format in the scom server.

Total CPU Utilization Percentage - Windows Server 2012 Operating System
Hi All
I had gone through all the articles and agree with posts submitted, but do we have any KPI stating - ProcessorQueueLength actually tied to the number of logical cpu's.
As Jonathan stated in one of the forums
ProcessorQueueLength actually needs to exceed Processor Queue Length Threshold * Number Of Processors. Where do we find this and how to validate.
We had an issue of CPU been high almost 99% for hours, but never alerted. Any kind of pointers will be helpful, especially supporting statement like Processor Queue Length Threshold is tied up with number of logical CPU's.Hi
you can create monitoring for performance counter for below counter
Object :System
Counter: Processor Queue Length.
refer below link for more information

for process count refer below link

SharePoint 2013 Server OS upgrade from Windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2012 R2
Is it possible to have SharePoint 2013 farm to have mixed version of OS (Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2012 R2).
We have a request to upgrade our farm servers from WIN 2008 R2 to Win 2012 R2. We have 5 servers in farm -
2 App servers - running with Central Admin, Service Applications, User Profile
3 Web Front End Servers- running web application, search and workflow manager
the database layer is separate on sql 2012 R2
We want to upgrade OS from windows 2008 R2 to windows 2012 R2 and SQL to SQL 2014.
What will be right approach to do OS upgrade in above scenario to minimize the impact of downtime.
May be add windows 2012 based servers in farm one by one and replace the windows 2008 R2 based servers from server.
Regards,
Kunal AbrolIts possible, but I wouldn't recommend it. The problem is that you can only install SharePoint 20103 on Windows Server 2012 r2 using the slipstreamed SP1 version. I assume that you used the regular version to install on you Server 2008 r2 versions.
Even if you upgrade those servers to SP1 there are some minor differences in the builds between slipstreamed SP1 and upgraded SP1. So although it will work it isn't recommended.
Also, you should be aware the upgrade of inplace SharePoint servers running Windows 2008 r2 to Windows 2012 r2 is not supported.
To upgrade to server 2012 you'll need to add 2012 servers to your environment using the slipstreamed version os SharePoint and then remove the old server 2008 r2 servers as soon as possible. For the period of the upgrade you should be able to get away
with running the farm in a mixed state.

Moving farm from Windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2012 (R2?)
I've been asked to move our current small SP2010 Server farm (WFE, App, and SQL) from Windows 2008 R2 servers to new Windows 2012 servers.
Any limitations that would prevent this from happening? Any major differences? Installation through the GUI won't be a problem? Any benefits to tout? I've installed 2012 R2 on a HyperV but haven't messed around with it much beyond that.
Thanks,
ScottFor SharePoint 2010, I would suggest sticking to 2008 R2. It is the most well tested operating system for SharePoint 2010. There may be some unknown gotchas that the community is unaware of with Server 2012 or 2012 R2.
Otherwise, everything should 'just work' with SP2 media.

Slow printing from windows 2008 R2 with Cisco 6509
Dear All,
I am having a wiered issue in my network. We have a windows 2008 R2 print server. Normal documents print's fine. If you print a image or pdf file, it takes a long time to print. For example a 2 MB PDF image with two page took me 10 minutes to print. The data from the server to the physical printer is really slow. To test it, i have loaded the driver on another windows 2008 R2 and the result is same slowness. We uses Xerox Colorqube 9303 printers.
I have tried most options from microsoft which didnt help. I have installed a windows 2012 server to test if its specific to windows 2008, but the result remains same. Printing from a windows PC is perfectly fine; 32 bit PCs we have.
I have seen someone got a solution to this by disabling ip local-proxy-arp, this is not enabled nor available in my switch.
I have 6509 as core switch with IOS 12.2(33)SXH8. Does anybody come across such a scenario? Is there any special port configuration required for windows 2008 R2 to work normal?
A sample interface configuration is given below
GigabitEthernet1/10 is up, line protocol is up (connected)
Hardware is C6k 1000Mb 802.3, address is c89c.1dd9.2619 (bia c89c.1dd9.2619)

Any help would be really appreciated.
Thanking you in advance.
Prince MathewHello
Printing from a windows PC is perfectly fine; 32 bit PCs we have.
- Printing directly from a computer which has the locally installed driver is printing fine.- it does seem to suggest the server or the network- however locally installed print drivers work fine so the communication to the printer from the client over the network seem to be okay.
However the centrally installed print drivers means the processing job is now with the server which is between the printer and client
Whats the RTT from client and server and client to printer .etc? - perform a extended ping to validate connectivity between all 3
Have you hardcoded the server port to the nic setting of the server - Are the speed/duplex settings manually applied to the servers if so make sure they are also manually set on the switch ports realting to these servers - this is apllicable to the printers too.
Is the same driver used locally is also on the printer server correct?
Whats printing protocol ( RAW) and port being used on the printer server
Do you have print pooling setup on the server -(typo in last post)
Are these printer shared in A/D and deployed by GPO -are the correct permissions set on these shares
Check the printer permission on the spool folder also - users need at least read & execute privileges
Have you manually cleared the print spooler folder and restarted the spooler service on the server?
Are the print jobs being render to the clients or is the server taking the load of processing the print job?
Any printer queue priorites set?

need helpHi.
I think I solved this yesterday. We got 1 printserver, with an alias, which we had this problem to connect to. I noticed that there is a difference between x86 and 64bits system entries in the registry...
When you are having a 64bit system, you must use REG_QWORD instead of REG_DWORD, REG_DWORD is only to be used in x86 system! See below.
Windows 2008 server R2 64-bit
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print
= ”DnsOnWire” = REG_QWORD Decimal = 1
(reg add hklm\system\currentcontrolset\control\print /v DnsOnWire /t REG_QWORD /d 1)
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\LanmanServer\Parameters
= DisableStrictNameChecking = REG_QWORD Decimal = 1
(reg add hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\lanmanserver\parameters /v DisableStrictNameChecking /t REG_QWORD /d 1)
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\LanmanServer\Parameters\
REG_SZ = OptionalNames = “aliasname” (C-name record in DNS)
(reg add hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\lanmanserver\parameters /v OptionalNames /t REG_SZ)
Windows 2008 server x86
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print = "DnsOnWire" = REG_DWORD Decimal = 1
(reg add hklm\system\currentcontrolset\control\print /v DnsOnWire /t REG_DWORD /d 1)
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Lanmanserver\Parameters = DisableStrictNameChecking = REG_DWORD Decimal = 1
(reg add hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\lanmanserver\parameters /v DisableStrictNameChecking /t REG_DWORD /d 1)
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\LanManServer\Parameters\ REG_SZ = OptionalNames = “aliasname”
(C-name record in DNS)
(reg add hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\lanmanserver\parameters /v OptionalNames /t REG_SZ)
Don't forget to reboot your system after these changes!

Migration of DNS from Windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2012
Hello,
We have a pair of Windows 2008 R2 servers running authoritative DNS services (they are not AD controllers, neither used as resolvers). There are ~20 domains + 10 DNSSEC domains hosted on those servers. We're considering to migrate them to Windows 2012
servers and retain IP addresses.
I'd greatly appreciate if somebody could advise the basic steps for such migration (particularly the DNSSEC part).
Many thanks.Hi,
It worked for me with a test zone but my example only had a single A record. You should test this first by adding the zone and testing resolution on the 2012 server before deleting it from the 2003 server.
The bug for secondary zones that you describe in Server 2008 is news to me. However, 2012 and 2012 R2 has many advantages over 2008 R2 for DNSSEC signed zones so I would recommend you migrate even if you weren't having problems on 2008 R2.
If you've been following the thread you mentioned above, you know that I've been doing a lot of testing with signed zones being updated on secondary servers. The signed zone is *always* updated on a secondary server but if the change on the primary was only
a signature refresh then as of right now there is still a bug where the newest RRSIGs are not transferred to the secondary server. This happens because the zone transfer occurs just before the new RRSIG is generated on the primary. This causes it to be left
behind on the primary server unless there is another zone transfer afterward. Note that a zone transfer still happens, it just happens too soon. The zone transfer that happens is an incremental zone transfer.
If the previous RRSIG expires before another zone transfer occurs then the zone can have validation problems on the secondary. There is a hotfix for this that will be distributed soon. I am checking now on the date.
If you increment the serial # on the primary, the secondary should get a full zone transfer.

Switching between apps launched through RemoteApp from Windows 2008 R2 server
I have a problem with RemoteApp on Windows 2008 R2 Standard SP1.
When I try to switch between apps, launched from RD Web Access web-page, it is not always succeded. Instead of it the target app blinks and I still remain at the previous app. In another words, the next app window remains behind the previous
app window and I have to minimize the previous app before switching to the next app.
Following the recommendations given by the TechNet Online Chat assistant, I've been installed all the available updates on that server from the Microsoft Update, but it didn't help us.
Is there any way to resolve this trouble?
Thank you.Hi,
Thanks for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Which version of RDP client you are using? I can suggest you to use RDP 8.0 for better assistance.
Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) 8.0 update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2

Slow connection from Windows 2008 to Windows XP with database 10.1.0.5
We have a server "Windows 2008 R2 x64"/"Windows 7 x64" with an instants client and when we want to connect to database version 10.1.0.5 that,
It's running in a server "Windows 2003 sp2", the connection is very slow, about 26 seconds but if we connect to this database from a server
"Windows XP sp3"/"Windows 2003 sp2" the connection is much faster, it's immediate.
The instants client of both servers are the same, they were installed several versions, like: 10.2.0.1, 10.2.0.5, 11.1.0.6, 11.2.0.1 and the results
were the same.
Could you help me?
ThanksCan you pls re-phrase your question or elaborate a bit on the issue.

Would you please shed more light on masking the higher order of IP address?
regardsJust to confirm what Niall said, I just meant to obscure it from public viewing when posting back to here. The 'high-order' end would be the left most octet .. Say your IP address is 111.222.333.444, when posting to a public forum such as this you'd show it as ***.222.333.444 or xxx.222.333.444. This is a security issue, so you don't expose your network to the world. It is best to just obscure the high-order part, because the OP's problem could be due to mis-matched IP addresses, and we'd miss spotting that if the entire address were masked and it is usuallly the low-order end where the discrepancies come.
and if you think this is being overly cautious .... there was a thread on c.d.o.s a few years back where a careless person posted a question and revealed his entire server/domain name, and it was a U.S. military domain. I called him out on it. He replied that it didn't matter because it couldn't be reached from the outside. Another participant promptly posted back the proof that it was accessible ... -
