Total disk activity per hour?

What's the best way to see how much IO my disks are doing every hour / every day? I'm trying to get a sense of how much activity my SSD drives are actually doing.

You might also look into iostat.  I just came across it on a blog post, so I don't really know much about it.  It's part of the sysstat package.

  • New to Leopard and wondering why there is disk activity every hour

Time machine and synch are turned off - but every hour the Mac wakes from sleep, does something unknown, and then goes back to sleep again.
Any idea what it could be doing every hour (on the hour)? It never happened in Tiger.

Thanks for that tip. iCal Helper was the culprit, and now I am looking into ways to turn it off. I never use iCal and don't need this hourly activity (it wakes up my pet budgie, who sleeps near the Mini!).

  • Check the cost per hour of a work center

    Hi all.
I need to make some calculations to determine if a change in work tools is justified. Basically, on our CNC machines, we have one operation that requires 2 tools of lower value (drilled hole using a bit, tapered at the top with a reamer). Tech department has proposed we switch to a new single tool that replaces the 2 previous, resulting in a faster operation time (drill bit with reamer). I'm sorry, I don't know the correct name of the tools in English, but that's beside the point anyway.
The tool is more expensive than the 2 previous tools combined, but allows for a larger number of holes to be drilled compared to the old drill bit, but less tapers than the actual reamer can do. Assuming the bit does about 1000 holes before needing replacement and the reamer about 5000, I divide the total cost of the tool by the amount of operations it can perform and I get a aprox. cost per hole for each tool. The new tool does about 2000 then needs replacing. Being more expensive, I have worked out that at it's most basic level, the cost per hole is a bit higher for the new tool.
Now, however, I need to factor in the gain from the time reduction. For that I need to know the machine cost per hour.
My question: what TA can I use to check the total running cost for a workplace, given a specific time period, or the cost for a predefined time period? I was thinking of somehow using MM03 for that, but I can't since the TA seems to be pulling a production variant that involves several conventional machines instead of the variant that uses the CNC. If I could somehow get MM03 to pull the correct production variant for calculations, then I could maybe use that. Any ideas?
    All help greatly appreciated.

    Hi Nuno,
Cost esitmate is done using CK11n.
    Cost estimate display using CK13.
The rate per activity can be maintained in KP26 against the cost center.

  • Constant CPU and Disk Activity

I just upgraded my MBP from Tiger to Leopard, and also upgraded from trial to full .Mac account, so I now have an iDisk for the first time.
I have iStat Menus installed and where, before the upgrades, the CPU graph showed a very low level of activity (almost zero) when the computer was idle, it now looks like a picket fence, with spikes reaching almost to the top of the graph. The disk activity graph exactly matches the CPU graph with regular spikes, which occur about very 7-8 seconds.
I opened Activity Monitor, and the highest usage switches between 'Sync Server' (with a value of anything from 2 to 9) and 'kernel-task' (with a value of around 2.5). Something called 'mds' sometimes pops up to the top (with values of 2-3). It appears the culprit is 'Sync Server'. I've tried iDisk sync set to 'Manually', and also with it turned off altogether, but it makes no difference.
Does anyone know what's going on here and, more importantly, how to get my MBP to relax again.
    Thanks in advance,
    Steve = : ^ )

I'm resurrecting this question because the problem still exists. Restarting the computer always stops the spikes but they always start up again at some point (I'm yet to pinpoint a cause) and, once happening, I can quit all running apps (except Finder) and they persist, and they seem to occur about 10 secs. apart.
The spikes occur in both cores but, if one core has a big spike (close to 100%) the other's is small and vice versa. Or they both have moderate spikes. It seems the total usage is about the same for every spike, though spread differently between the two cores.
And the HD still shows activity at the same rate as the spikes.
Any ideas what I should look for?
    Thanks in advance,
    Steve = : ^ )

  • Disk Activity Problem w/ "update" Process

I'm having problems with unusal spikes in disk activity which causes everything I'm doing to pause until the activity is finished. If I'm browsing or switching between folders the app and OS pauses, if I'm watching a video, the video will pause while the audio will continue for a second before stopping.
My CPU, System Memory, and Disk Usage are all in a very low percentile of usage. There's no problem there.
The culprit I've determined is a process called "update" (process ID 89, user: root) At regular intervals "update" will appear on the list of active processes and it is exactly then, everytime, that the system will pause. The process never takes up more than 1% of my CPU.
Does anyone know what this process is and does? If I quit the process, will it stay off? Any information is helpful. I can't find anything about this specific problem anywhere.

I would begin looking at any of your 3rd party software, startupitems, background processes, Safe Boot, as well as cleaning the caches with Applejack.
Many programs and utilities have a "check for updates" feature.
And the more utilities you have running, to "monitor the health of _________" - they all affect system performance. Less is more. They can stumble over each other and even outright conflict.
I would also be concerned with the health of the drive directory and folders and the size of the largest folders (there is still a limit of something like 2048 items per folder which will affect open-save and navigating).
If you have Disk Warrior 4, use it, if you don't, consider it a good investment (just like good backups) for preventative maintenance, not just after there is a problem.

  • Redo Log Files - more than 12 per hour

    Hello @all,
I have a problem with my redo log files. I get more than 12 switches per Hour. I have 3 Files with 5oM size. I increased the sitz to 15o M, but
I still have 12 switches per hour.

    Hello @all,
yes I know, that 3 switches per hour are perfekt, but I had increased the Size from 5o M to 15oM already and the amount from switches, are not reduced.
So there must be something else, that causes the log switches.Martin,
As I said somewhere above too, 150meg is a tiny size if you are managing a production db. I have already mentioned that make your log file size to at least 500meg and than check. As for the high redo activity, only you can confirm that whether this has been started from now only or was happening before too? In anycase, for an active oltp, 500 to 1gb of redo log file size should be okay.
For the extra redo generation, you have been given link for mining log files using logminer. Try using it to see what is causing extra redo.

  • Disk Utility has been Shrinking disk for several hours....

I have an external HD (FW800/GUID) that has 2 partitions in it that I'm trying to reduce the size of one of the partitions to make room for a third without deleting anything on the drive. Disk Utility has been 'shrinking disk' for several hours and I'm debating if it's hanging. I see no activity on the drive, so I'm not sure what's going on.
How long should this typically take to finish?
the partition in question has about 1.3T of data on it and I'm trying to free up about 300G that's unused.
Should I be concerned? How long should I let this go before bailing the app?

What's the chance that the data will be corrupt if I force quit disk utility?
In the middle of repartitioning that has apparently hung? I would guess it would range somewhere from high to certain. You should immediately use Disk Utility to repair both partitions after force-quitting.
    I didn't make a backup
I hope you're lucky, but I have the feeling you're about to learn your lesson about not having backups in a very severe way. If the drive cannot be repaired at this point, you may need a file recovery utility like [Data Rescue|http://www.prosofteng.com> or [File Salvage|http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1].
In the future, you absolutely must have a minimum of two backups (three copies) of any data you can't afford to lose.

  • Battery, 10% per hour?

I have an iphone 4, have had it since about a month after they came out.  I was always unimpressed with the battery life but now it's gotten worse.  Now, I know I sit here and use it frequently, but 10% of battery life per hour seems a little extreme.  And that's just if I let it sit there.  If I'm using it heavily, then it's dead within 4-5 hours.  By heavily I mean manually checking email (two accounts, yahoo and gmail), checking facebook, a couple apps, I make a phone call about once a month, not kidding there.  I get phone calls throughout the day but I never answer them, let them go to voicemail.  I take pictures, probably one a day I'd say on average.  When my son plays a game or two, angry birds and cut the rope, for like 20-30 minutes, I've seen the battery drop like 15% in that time span.  I keep the brightness on full.  I hate how dim it looks otherwise.  I use wi-fi at home, bluetooth is off.  The battery has gone down by 3% just in the time it took to write this so far (10 minutes maybe?) and that's only because the phone has been active as I received a couple text messages.
I charge it to full every night and lately I've had to recharge in the middle of the day as well.
I have read many threads here and on other sites that say to recreate Exchange email accounts (I don't have any) restore as a new phone, and complete a full chartge cycle by letting the phone completely drain and then recharge it without interruption.  I've done all these things and yet the battery life remains terrible.
I see some comments from people saying they can go 2 to 3 days without having to recharge and it makes me wonder if they keep their phone in airplane mode lol.  I just think it's time for me to replace the battery, but before I do I wanted to check one more time to see if someone had any magic cures they could share.  Oh I'm on the latest firmware and on AT&T.
    Thanks.

Update, I've noticed that my usage and standby times show the same amount, currently at 2 hours and 43 minutes, my battery is now down to 78% and I have not used my phone much at all today, just letting it sit there.  I have killed everything that was running in the background and still, the usage shows the same amount for standby and usage times.  I do not believe this is a hardware issue, it is more likely a software issue.
There is clearly something wrong. Note, however, that it is impossible to kill everything running in background. Killing apps in the Quick Launch ribbon does not necessarily kill the background process (it does for 3rd party apps, but not built in apps, which relaunch their background processes immediately). Some app queued data to be sent, and the send failed, but the app or the lower levels of the network protocol keeps trying to send anyway.
As you mentioned, the most common app that can do this is the email app, especially with if you have an Exchange account, but any push account can do it (whether push is on or off). So can Ping, the Apple store apps and Game Center. And ANY app that sends data can queue it.

I need to generate a report that shows the average number of visits by hour of the day for the first quarter of 2008 for a time period of 7 AM - 11 PM.  Each record consists of one visit and looks like this:
    3/1/08 6:00

My question is:  HOW DO I GET AN AVERAGE PER HOUR?

    Post Author: PatchesPete
    CA Forum: Formula
You are correct, but that's not what I need.  I guess my request wasn't very clear.I need to know the average by the hour for the first quarter of 2008.The formula I wrote produces an average by hour by the number of days in the range.  Example:  Using the formula Sum ({@7AM})/29 produces 43 total number of visits between 7 and 8 AM for the month of February, 2008 divided by the number of days in February, which is 29, resulting in 1.5 visits per day in the 7 - 8 AM time slotMy problem is, how do I calculate the number of days in the first quarter (91 days), second quarter (91 days),  third quarter (92 days), fourth quarter (92 days) without having to change my query each quarter to reflect the appropriate number of days?Hope that makes things a little clearer."Pete"

  • TM disk activity whenever an app is launched

Since setting up Time Machine a few days ago, I have been hearing some disk activity from the external Firewire drive every time I launch an application. Does Time Machine do something whenever an app is launched? Otherwise it must mean that my apps are reading something (eg prefs) on launch from the TM back-up, which would be a matter for concern.
    Simon

Maybe so but it didn't happen at all when I initially connected this drive to my Mac for a few hours before designating it as my TM backup device. But it was very noticeable as soon as I had done my first TM backup... this LaCie FW drive has a distinctive note when read/writes are happening. The only things on the drive are the TM backup and, in another (bootable) partition, a fresh install of Os 10.5.1 for emergency use.
I suppose I could buy into the theory that an app interrogates each system it finds before it concludes that it should link to the local installation...

I'm a computer professional, and have had at least six Toshiba laptops in the past 15 years.I have always bought Toshiba for myself and reccomend them to my clients.
I noticed an important ommission in the most recent machine purchased for my own use. It's a Satellite S855, and it has no  disk activity light.
Whose idea was it to omit this tiny, inexpensive and most useful item? It can't have been omitted because of cost! In a production run how much is saved per unit by omitting this device, five cents? I doubt that it even costs that much. What ever the price, I'd gladly pay the additional cost for something so useful to observing how the computer is running and whether it may be busy, overwhelmed or just frozen.

  • Fcpx background disk activity

Just curious about what is going on after I open FCPx and can hear my external HD being accessed. The familiar sound of the external drive reading/writing (dunno) can be heard even when I am doing nothing and am working in another program.
Ah....as quickly as I ask the question I realize what it is so I'll leave this here in the event somebody else asks a similar question.
I quit FCPx and the disk activity stopped and then I realized it was probably background rendering. I booted FCPx turned background rendering off and the access stopped. Question asked and answered.

Hi, Was looking through the forum because of a similar issue that occured twice yesterday. I was cleaning up and consolidating my externally connected disks (too many backups) 1 x USB connected, a NAS store and my Airport time capsule.  After a long session of deleting files I got the spinning globe on the finder window, I could not access other apps to look at what was going on, but I could here the  Time Capsule rattling away. Left it for 20 mins still the same, so had to crash the system to recover (hold power button in).  Four hours later and more tidying up, went to shut down and again heard the Time capsule rattling away but this time I got to the white screen and the spinning circle. Twenty minutes later still not shutdown so another crash of the system.
I am not sure whether this problem is the same as you have described but there are similarities hence I thought I would post.
Hope we can find a resolution
