TOTAL NOOB!

I've got a sweet flash template whose content I need
to change - contact addy, some pictures, etc.
Just five simple pages but I don't even know how to load the
swf file in order to edit it!
I just downloaded the 30 day trial of CS3 Flash Pro to see if
this was within my capabilities...

First - non-descript titles will hamper the amount of
response (as you may have already noticed).
2nd - the issue of "newbies" purchasing templates thinking
they can easily edit them is commonplace
in the forum - happend weekly and discussed too many times to
be honest - what happens is, many (if
not most) templates look great when compiled but are
completely a mess when it comes to how the
source files were built. Not only do you need to know the
basics of Flash, but often you need to
almost be an expert to reverse engineer what the template
developers threw together - then re-build
it in a more optimized way.
I'm not sure the recipe of buying a cheap template and trying
to edit it within 30 days with the
free trial in hopes of getting a cheap website online working
the way you want is a good one. If you
don't understand what the source file is (it is the FLA) then
there's not much anyone here can do to
help you because you won't understand the flash terminology
anyway.
Besides, we don't know what this template is, how it was
built and what you want to do to change it.
Very much like calling a mechanic and telling him over the
phone your car won't start and expecting
him to tell you how to fix it.
Need more info - and maybe a thread where the title reflects
the issue would generate more response
(for future reference read the forum FAQ for a better chance
of getting more answers faster).

Total noob Q: Can I run virtual machines on a MacBook Pro ?

My apologies for entering totally green, folks. My last Apple was the first Mac I bought in university, sold quickly, and preceded by a bunch of ]['s. Sadly, I have been living under a rock for 20 years, and just this year spent $200k at IBM for servers etc in a pro capacity ...
My problem is that I am not gonna buy one more piece of lame Lenovo garbage ever again, and I need a new notebook.
The time has come where I am considering the change. I'd enjoy it really, to crawl out of this shell.
Because I am a total noob, the answer to my question is probably so easy for you folks ...
I need to keep Windows for now. I need to run Linux. I need to VM a few Novell 6.5 servers as I transition them to SUSE, and I have precisely zero MacOS apps at the moment.
With this said, does it make sense to consider a fully optioned MacBook Pro to take the place of a highest-end Thinkpad, to do the above (and more), using a Virtual Machine technology ?
My first months with a Mac would probably be spent in virtual machines as I get with the program, but I really do want to get out of this situation that nobody makes a good PC anymore and the best Wintel box seems to a Mac.
I want to believe. Please help me.

Total Noob - Need Advice

Array methods for a total noob-

Well, not exactly a total noob, I’ve got an old project
in lingo/shockwave (where I have over 10 years experience) that I
need to convert to Flash/AS3 (where I have about a week’s
experience). I’ve got the basic navigation and interface
elements working but I’m getting stuck trying to extract data
out of my primary data structure, a two dimensional array. An
example of the first few lines of the array are attached.
My first task is to write a function that can return a new
one dimensional array, brandList, that contains a unique list of
manufacturers (second element of the sub-array, or tireData[j][2])
keeping in mind that tireData is not sorted and will contain
duplicate entries for manufacturers. It seems the filter method
will be part of my solution but so far I haven’t gotten
anything to work. Anyone know of a good tutorial on the subject?

If you want the second element of the array, it is index 1,
not 2. If you want to sort the results, you can use the
Array.sort() method. If you want some code that does the
extraction, study the following, it's one possible approach:

OK let me explain what i know and don't know
I am totally new to this HDTV stuff but my tv died so i am been forced to buy a cheap HDTV( has to cheap to replace it fast for my son). It's a basic 32" with a single HDMI and no PC port and i would assume its a 720p as a minimum.
After reading the forum and the help pages i know i have a yellow DVI port on the GFX card so its got HDTV out support.
My confusion arises as the card says it it HDTV ready. So i have some question i would like to ask so i don't blow up the PC or the TV
1: If its got the yellow port, why is the card HDTV ready?
2: If i am mistake (i am Dyslexic) how do i connect it to the TV?
3: If the card does not do direct HDTV out form the yellow DVI port is there any other way i can safely connect this GFX card to my TV's HDMI port with some third part hardware?
I do hope you can take the time to help out and to explain a little more about how this all works as i am new to this and don't want destroy what i all have. I am buying a 8800 card when i rebuild my pc later in the year but i was hoping i could connect it to my HDTV as i intended to use this pc a complete media center once my new system is built but i didnt really want to use the SVCD to scart and not use the HDTV

In reply to your audio comment this is solved by me using the sound card in the PC is linked up to my Hi-Fi so audio not a problem.

First let me say I am a Noob at Flash. I recently purchased
Studio 8 and CS2 Photoshop. I created a basic button in flash using
the default Up,Over,Down and hit routine. I have the frames working
and can save (publish) the file ie: Button.swf.
Once I am in Dreamweaver 8, I can import the Button.swf using
Insert>Media>Flash option. The button appears in the website
and the graphic animations interact with Up,Over,Down.
Here is where I exhibit to you pros out there that I am a
complete idiot!. I can not find a way to link or target with the
button. I am use to simply providing a link to the web object
inside of Dreamweaver. Much like the provided style flash buttons
do in Dreamweaver. Is there a way to create a flash button and have
it act like the style buttons ie: with the options to link and
such?
I feel I am missing the code needed for Dreamweaver to talk
to the Flash button? And if so, I take it needs to be included
prior to publishing of the Flash Button? Any help would be great
guys!... Otherwise I’m looking for a book “Making a
Flash Button and using it in Dreamweaver8 – For Complete
Idiots “

Hi,
If you are using Flash 8, this would be very easy for you.
All you have to do to add video to your file is to import your
video and Flash will open the video importer wizard for you. move
through the steps. Do not choose embedded video if you want your
video to play externally. Then choose your player skin.
Flash will generate the FLV file for your video and add
controllars to your video in the stage. This is the easiest way as
you do not have to add any code my hand for the controllars.
If you like to just export video to FLV, use the Flash FLV
exporter that come with Flash mx 2004 and Flash 8

Total noob forgive me

Ok so i'm using what I believe to be the newest version of adobe premiere pro and the media encoder. just downloaded the software 4-5 days ago.
My source video is 1920x1080 60fps .mts files from my canon vixia hfm31 camcorder. My video its about 3.5 minutes with an mp3 song.
When I go to export it to the encoder, i click the box that says match source sequence and then go to the encoder. It shows the source type as "mpeg preview". But whenever I try and click the green play button to encode it tries to run for a few seconds and then I get an message saying can't encode "disk full". The source is the desktop of my C: drive and I have about 80 gig left so I know that can't be true.
If I use the presets like youtube for example it will encode. But I noticed youtube encodes at 29.97 fps. I was hoping to get a 60 fps vid.
Anyway, anyone have a clue why I'm getting this message? or what i'm neglecting to mention in my question??
Also is there a tutorial on the basics of using this software/encoder. I love it but it looks like there is so much to it and I'm a noob at video production/editing. I'd love to learn all I can about it. Any good directions that I can be pointed in I'd really appreciate it.

Best practice is to keep video assets on a drive that is NOT the C: drive, if possible. On that same note,
avoid overly long file names, as I see with your "My Documents" string. Create your own folder for this stuff.
Next, I see that "Target" and "MAX" are both set the same. Normally, the Target is somewhat less than
Max...since "Target" really means AVERAGE bit rate.
For YouTube encodes, TURN OFF "Match Sequence Settings", and choose the H.264 format and then pick the "YouTube widescreen HD" preset. This will encode 720p video. Set frame rate to 29.97, and choose "Use Maximum Render Quality" box at the bottom of AME window. This should provide good results for YouTube viewing.

Total Noob wanting some help

Hi guys I just got new job and they use CF over here. My
first small project is thowing me for a loop just because I've
never really worked databases before. I'm looking for some starting
help. We have this intranet site that everyone here uses to place
orders and stuff, they all use bunches of databases. And what my
boss is wanting me to do is find a way to put a count of all the
items in a database that match a certian criteria on the main page.
So what I need is a way to count database items. Help would be
helpful. Like I said I'm a total n00b and forgive me if you can't
make heads or tails of this. I'd be glad to explain more in depth

Well, let says that you want to get a count of everything in
your ITEMS table that has a QUANTITY of at least 3 and a PRICE of
greater than $5.00 (assuming that QUANTITY and PRICE and columns
within the ITEM table)
A real simple way of handling this app would be to first do
the query and then out put the result. Your entire application
would be:

And that is it. It only gets more complicated from there, and
you need to strongly consider some learning resources if you want
to excel at ColdFusion. It is an easy language to learn and use,
but, like any other language, it should not be fuddled through.
Note: You'll need to get your datasourceName from your
administrator.

Whoops yes, "Get Info". There's a bug that seems to happen with the MediaSource installer where the CDDB files don't get registered which might be the issue. Try following the guide here on reregistering the files.

IBook questions from a total noob.

Well, greetings to all of you! I am the most proud owner of an iBook "Snow" Dual USB, 500 mhz, 320mb RAM, 10gb HDD. I won this on eBay 3 weeks ago for $15 with a supposedly dead HDD and since it was local there was no shipping charges! Since I'm actually using it to type this, the hard drive is in fact fine, a bit small but fine. There is no Airport Card, but I see from the antenna it is possible to put one in there. Anyway, my question has probably been asked a billion times, but from what I read nobody has an explanation just a simple "No". Obviously I want to upgrade the Hard Drive, BUT, if I'm going to be in there anyway I want to put a combo drive in. However, I've seen 700-900mhz Logic Boards on eBay, not cheap but not outrageous either. I want to swap out the old 500mhz one with a 700-900mhz replacement. The Form factor is the same, all the screw holes are identical, other then the possible display incompatibility I see no reason why it can't be done. Please, explain to me, in vast detail, why this cannot be done and cannot work. Other then the amount of time....I see no issues. Thank you for your' time, I look forward to the responses! =^)

See now we're getting somewhere, obviously there's more to it then just swapping out the Logic Board and having it just work. Yet apparently it can be done. Of course, it would seem to be more of an annoyance then it is worth, but I figured to try and squeeze a bit more juice from this apple...ha ha ha. I had figured if I was going to have it apart to put in a replacement Hard Drive, then why not just go ahead and go for the full monty, right? I suppose a stick of 512mb RAM and a larger, faster spinning hard drive will be all I'll be doing to this machine. The simple fact that I only paid $15 for the unit and $35.00 for the OS X 10.3 Panther CD's and it works has me thrilled, really! It is my first Apple computer and I love being able to mess around with it, but I'm quickly becoming aware of the severity of it's limitations. Many of the applications I see require either OS X 10.4 Tiger, or it'll work with Panther but I need a G4 800mhz cpu....etc, etc, etc. I guess it's hard to take on the world when one is only 3 feet tall, figuratively speaking. But I'm glad to have an Apple computer and I'm only sorry I wasted so much time with Windows PC's and that I shelled out for Crappy VISTA and went back to XP!!!! Grrr.

I have used Crystal Reports maybe 3 times. Anyway, I am experiencing delays on the network and need to trim the fat, so to speak. How do I pare down on the space being used by old records in the table. I was thinking of taking out anything older than 2 weeks from my weeklies and older than 4 months from my monthlies. How do I get to the menu to do this in SQL Server Enterprise Manager? Or is it done from Crystal Reports somehow?

Are you pretty sure that the slowness is due to the number of records in the tables? Are they indexed/have primary keys set up? How many records are we talking here(thousands, millions, hundreds of millions)? Is the report showing all the records in the tables or are you using parameters? What versions of SQL Server and Crystal are you using?
Instead of getting rid of old records, you could run your report off of a table that contains only the records you will need. You could set up a job to run daily or however often is necessary (depending on how often the report is run) to refresh that table with just the data you need.
It might not necessarily be that you have too many records though, it could be that they arent indexed or indexed well, or that the report is doing things that you could have done on the server side instead. For instance, if you are doing alot of grouping/summing you might set up a view on the server, to run the report off of, that sums and groups the data and have the report just read that. Can you leave us some more details on what kind of report this is and what it does?

I am new to AS, trying to get my SWF menu button to jump the
web page to a label on the SAME web page as the SWF, similar to the
HTML
<a href=#somelabelname>something</a> syntax. I
have tried everything that my pea brain can come up with, and I
cannot get this to work right...well, at all. Here is an example,
which fails:

Any clues? Everything else in my SWF works perfectly. I wrote
it in 8 just for compatibility's sake. Thank you!

I Just resolved an issue similar to yours. Look for getURL
doesn't work.
I used
on(release){
getURL (c:\\my Documents\\His_Lat_2008\\Index.html)
C = drive where I have my folders
my Documents = main folder where I save other folders
His_Lat_2008 = name of the folder containing the program
to connect to my home page.
Use the same string adding the folder name, when you link to
other pages.

Total Noob question: Projects

Hi good People. Just got FCE HD 3.5 and got the Lynda training video with it and I am trying to learn my way around. Can someone point me in the right direction here.
I was trying to create a new project and I did so with another project open, and it just added the new project to the old one. not realizing it at the time I opened some stuff I was working on in iMovie and of course it made a third project in the old project. So my question is. How do I separate these projects?
Anyway, now I know that you have to close the old project before you start a new one, right?

No. You can multiple projects open at the same time. You just have to be careful what your doing so the right material gets edited into the right project. A good naming convention is a good way to start, like instead of leaving the sequence name as Sequence 1, name it something, like the name of the project if nothing else.
