TOTAL Play Count... possible?

This might be a strange question, but I am just curious. I know that when I plug my iPod into my computer and open iTunes, the play count comes up for each song. I was wondering if it is possible to get the total play count from my iPod... just a single number for the number of times I've played EVERY song. I have a "retro" iPod (iPod photo... not sure what generation) so I'm not sure if current programs would work with it, but I can try it. BTW, I have iTunes 9.2 if that matters. Thank you!

No. However, it is easy enough to paste your library into Excel or some other spreadsheet (simply make sure the columns you want are visible in iTunes, then copy and paste) from which you can do all the sums and statistics you want.

Getting a total play count

I'm obviously a guy with nothing better to do than this... Is there an easy way to get a total play count (for all songs).
I make a playlist of my top played every few months, save it, then reset the play count and start again, but would like to do the same thing after a certain number of tracks have been played rather than after every 6 months. It's not particularly important but its nagging at me.
I presume there must be a 'database' somewhere in the iTunes folder where all this info is stored.

How to I get my play counts off my iPod onto my new mac?

I have all the music in my iTunes but before I re-sync I'd like to get my play count file off my ipod and import it into iTunes?

You should have copied the complete iTunes Library, including the iTunes Library.itl file, which, as far as I know, contains all the Play Counts from the existing (old) iTunes and pasted that into your new computer.
Again, as far as I understand it, the total Play Count is not held on the Classic. If it was, it would not include plays within the iTunes Library. All the iPod does is remember how many plays since the last sync and tell iTunes to increase the Play Count by that number.

ITunes play count

I'm wondering if there is a way to get the play-count of songs in iTunes just for a specific week? I don't want to reset my total play counts every week, but I also keep statistics about which songs I listen to every week. Hence, it would be highly useful to be able to see what I played in my iTunes, without having to write it down on paper every time I played a new song.
Is there a way to do this?

First - thanks for the confirmation. At least now I know that this can't be done, at least not at the present time. Perhaps I could hope that a "reset-able" play-counter, separate from the total play count, is something that might show up in later versions.
As for taking things too seriously...yes, maybe I am, but this is my idea of fun. I've done this for more than 10 years now, and being able to go back and see what I listened to at certain points in time is more fun than it is work. That, of course, doesn't stop me from wanting to simplify the task of counting songs

There is no column view for the artist tab in iTunes 11. The songs are chunked up by album, no option for list view, let alone column chooser. Also, everything under view > column browser is grayed out.

I've learned how to transfer my music files to a new PC, but is it possible to also transfer library info such as play counts and ratings? I am moving my music from an old XP system to a Vista system. I would like to keep all my play counts, ratings etc if possible. I believe I can copy the library file but will it be a problem if the path is different (in XP it's My Documents/My Music where in Vista it's Documents/Music without the "My"). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Rating - Play count totals question ...

As you probably know, the rating and playcount are not stored in the song file itself; they are stored in the library and will be lost if you move the songs separately from the entire library.
So, to preserve them, first consolidate your library (if it isn't already) using the command File > Library > Organize Library... > Consolidate Files, and then copy the entire iTunes folder to the new machine.

Is it possible to show play counts in Artists or Album view in iTunes 11?

There are some beautiful new changes to iTunes 11, but also some things I really like have been taken away. One of them is being able to see my playcouts as I browse. Not just in the playlist or songs list view.

I have 3 product codes that I want to report on - Mold, Repair, and Production. For Mold and Repair, I want to print out only the top 1 job for each order. For Production, I want to print all jobs. I have GH1 to group by ProdCode. GH2 groups by Orders. Detail A section has a formula to suppress if ProdCode = Production. Detail B suppresses if ProdCode is not Production. I can get the suppresion to work but I don't know how to get the Top 1 to show when Detail A is shown.
Obviously I'm new at Crystal Reports - about 3 weeks.

My only issue is this...itunes can't find the files. I guess I can just start from scratch but I don't want to lose my play counts. Is there any way to easily "point" itunes to the back up location? This is more important to me than it should be, I guess.

Play count reset - is it possible??

I have a number of tracks where the play count has gone completely mad - can't figure out why, but may have been after the last itunes upgrade at a guess. Not much of an issue except it has substantially altered the content of several playlists, and I don't want to have to get creative just to fix it.
Does anyone have guidance on how to reset the playcount to zero for all or selected tracks?

Is it possible to sync play counts and a ratings between PC's?

I recently got a new pc and am in the process of moving everything over to it, I'm wondering if I can sync my two accounts?

My own experience is that the play count transfer from the Classic to iTunes is extremely erratic. Some times it transfers the information and sometimes it doesn't.
It's been discussed here before and seems to be a bug which Apple have not yet addressed.

Ok an observation and then a possible solution.
The observation: I find it very interesting how when people begin to use something they like that offers features never before offered (and this goes for anything, not just computers and software) that people become obsessed and/or dependent on that feature. With itunes and ipods, the whole issue of Play Counts has to be the number one in this regard. People are obsessed. Oh can't have my playlist be out of whack of what I actually listened to. Or I got a new computer/iPod/hard drive and I don't want to lose my playcounts. Funny how a few years back, most people before getting into iTunes or an iPod probably never considered how many times they listened to one album or song vs. another, let alone getting obsessed with maintaining a count.
Yes iTunes came around, introduced play counts, and now everyone is all up in arms if their playcounts are not accurate, updated, lost, etc.
OK so the possible solution. Since you use a Mac, you can use several different Apple scripts to adjust playcounts. In particular there is one that lets you add or subtract from the playcount (vs. setting a playcount to a specific number). So you can select a song or a bunch of songs at once, invoke the script, type the number you want to add or subtract then hit the or button and your playcounts are incremented or decremented that amount.
So in your situation, you simply play your iPod and fall asleep. Then next time you sync your iPod, all you have to do is in iTunes, go to the most recently played list (which is a SmartPlaylist you can adjust the total number shown so instead of just 25 or whatever, make it 100 or whatever works), select all the songs from the one after the last one you recall listening to before falling asleep through to the when the iPod turned off or you woke up or whatever it is. With all of them selected, invoke the script, type in 1, hit the minus button and all those tracks will have their playcount adjusted down one, preserving the playcount the way you like.

Combine Play Count for multiple libraries?

Apologies if this has been discussed recently. I tried searching and didn't find anything.
I have iTunes installed on my home desktop (Windows Vista), my laptop (Windows XP) and my work computer (Mac). Each computer has a different library, but there are many common songs. I'd like to combine the play counts so my home desktop shows the total number of times I've played each song. Is that possible without making the libraries on each computer identical (which would be impossible because my laptop hard drive isn't big enough)?

No, I am afraid Home Sharing won't owrk for this. It only works on a LAN and it only sync tracks not counts.
I am afraid iTunes does not do this. Apart from getting into some fairly complex programming in a scripting language using the iTunes COMS interface, I don't see how this could be done.

I had to install a new hard drive because my old hard drives boot files became corrupted, and i want to get all of my music files off the old hard drive and regain all my play counts/ratings/playlists

as the title says, ive had to install a new hard drive and i want to transfer my old itunes library onto the new drive, maintaining all playlists/play counts/ratings etc, album artwork if possible. The old hard drive is installed as a slave drive and is completely acessible, but due to the boot files being corrupted i cannot use it as the main drive and therefore operate my old itunes. Also, my ipod no longer contains my music library as itunes synced without my permission and wiped it.
The only thing i have tried is copying all of my old music files from the old drive by selecting 'add folder to library' and then the old drive, then replacing the new itunes library.itl file with the one from my old itunes. This restores all my playlists and playcounts but when i try to play any of the songs it says that the files could not be found, and i dont fancy locating 8500 music files individually!

Ah, my reply was based on the assumption that you had a default installation of iTunes.
i.e you had all your music in the iTunes media folder inside your iTunes folder.
If your iTunes folder is so small compared to the amount of music you have, you must have a different arrangement.
This complicates you situation considerably.
iTunes can cope with moving around as long as all the music is in the iTunes media folder, not not if it isn't.
Your first step should be to get iTunes working on the old drive. This will involve editing the xml library file so that the drive letter is correct and then rebuilding the library from the xml file.
Then you will need to consolidate your library which moves everything into the iTunes media fodler. After that you will be able to use my first suggestion.
Step 1
Find the iTunes folder on the old drive and copy the two library files somewhere else so you can find them again. That's iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Library.xml.
Now open the copy of iTunes Library.xml with WordPad.
Look for lines starting:
Location
These contain the paths to tracks.
You will need to use a find/replace to change the drive letter so that it is correct.
Make sure that you include enough in the "find" so that you only change the right thing.
Maybe /c:/ and replace with /d:/ or whatever.
After that, tell iTunes to use the library on the old drive with a shift key start.
Hold down the shift key and start iTunes, keep holding the shift key until you are prompted to choose a library. Navigate to the iTunes folder on the old drive and choose iTunes Library.itl.
Then use the method in the following article to rebuild your library;

Unfortunately the date added will be today for all tracks.
If iTunes works correctly after this, consolidate your library
File>>Library>>Organize>>consolidate
This copies all tracks into to iTunes media folder and could create a problem if you do not have disk space so don't do it if you are unsure about free disk space.
Check that iTunes works OK and then use the first method.

Is there a way to "reset" the games "played count" on the 5th Gen iPod Nano

I was just looking through my new iPod Nano (16 GB), and happened to select
all three games (Klondike, Maze and Vortex), but never played them, just looked and then
quit out of each game. Now I have a "game played" count on all three games.
I'm not sure if I may hang onto this iPod Nano or possibly look into an iTouch.
If I sell this new one on eBay, I would like to know how to reset the "game counts"
back to 0 or the original "default" of no game counts showing.
Any help would be appreciated.
By the way, why would Apple even need to show a "game played count" on any of
the iPod Nano games ... very weird.

I think the only way you can reset play counts on games is if you do a full restore of the ipod. But, then again, if you plan on selling it on ebay, it'd be probably be best if you do the restore, that way it'd be like opening a brand new ipod for the new owner.
As for why Apple would want to keep track of game counts...I have no idea.
