Total Router Bandwidth Usage

Is there a way to see the total bandwidth coming through a router?  Namely the WRT54GL.  Any program that monitors all router activity other than just the computer it's installed on?  I just added a Netflix streaming box to the router and have no way of telling how much bandwidth is coming through it.  Due to my ISP monthly limits I am forced to keep track.  I checked the routers config page but saw nothing built in that offered this.

You might want to look into 3rd party firmware (which will void your Linksys warranty, if you have any left).
Tomato is an excellent 3rd party firmware for the WRT54G (up to V4) and WRT54GL. It has a nice graphical RealTime bandwidth graph, and will log daily and monthly usage in text format. It is much more flexible than the stock linksys firmware, with QoS capabilities, Static DHCP, and much more. There are also user modified builds that allow you to use your router as an OpenVPN server.

    Hi Judy,
I could not reproduce your issue. Is your Project Server patched with the latest SP and CU?
Also can you reproduce this unexpected behavior with another project?
Can you split your screen from the resource usage view, display the resource form and click right on the grey part selecting "schedule"? Then you'll have the scheduled start and finish dates for the resource's assignments. This is to be sure that
you are not missing any parts of the assignments due to a wrong zoom in the timephased grid.

  • WRT160N Bandwidth usage

Does this router monitor or meter bandwidth usage? Using Vista Home Premium OS, two other computers with WMP54GS and WMP54G PCI adapters and a PSP.
Can it be configured to monitor or meter usage? Can I see the actual usage in real time?
Question 2: (I can ask this elsewhere if you want) Is there a way to extend the antenna on WRT54G & S adapters since they tend to become shielded by the computer case itself?
    Thanks

No Linksys router do not monitor band width.nor they can be coinfigured to do so. You can use high gain antennas for the adapters.

  • What is the actual bandwidth usage?

When I use Adobe Connect I am online and broadcasting for about 4 hours a day, for 10 days at a time. I only do screen sharing and voice -- no video.
I have DSL Internet. The DSL upload speeds are very poor (under 1Mb). To speed things up, I thought I'd look into getting a 4G hotspot, but I'm worried about actual bandwidth usage, since such plans have a practical limit of 5 or 10Gb per month.
My off-hand guess is that If I were to watch a video of myself, I guess it would be a couple of gigs for a four hour, non-HD video. So by that very rough guestimate, I'd hit 20Gb pretty easily over the 40 hours of my meeting. Is that right the way to think about it?
Has anyone monitored actual consumed bandwidth for a simple meeting of one person talking and sharing his screen? I'm not looking for definitive answers -- just some ballpark estimate of what such a meeting consumes each hour...
    Thanks! :-)

Page 22 of this document will give you some numbers that will allow you to estimate the total data used for a meeting. Keep in mind these numbers are what Adobe saw as average consumption, yours may be higher or lower.

  • Measure the Network bandwidth usage

    Hi,
For application server, is there any Oracle tool to be used to measure the Network bandwidth usage?

    Hi,
The following policies are supported in Window 7
Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Network | Background Intelligent Transfer Services (BITS) |Set up a maintence schedule to limit the maximum network bandwidth used for BITS Background transfers
or Set up a work schedule to limit the maximum network bandwidth used for BITS Background transfers
    see this link
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/wmi/archive/2011/02/02/bits-more-flexible-bandwidth-limit-policies.aspx
And download speed is also related with your network connection, your ISP, setting in your router, your system perfrormance...

  • N/W Bandwidth usage

    All,
I was wondering of there is any documentation around the typical network bandwidth usage by the BOE XI R2 application (InfoView/WebI)? As part of the deployment of some new servers here, before they can allocate us the appropriate bandwidth, the network team wants us to give them some numbers around what are the typical data transfer rates on the network pipe. For this, we have assessed the total number of concurrent users of the application, but there isn't really any way for us to gather the data usage rates.
Does anyone know if the PSO/PG/SC or another group has any information about this - where they may have run tests and gathered results fro typical data bandwidth usage rates when running WebI reports via InfoView?
I know this is a rather unusual request, but we don't have an option - the network team won't move until we have a good backing from the vendor (BOBJ/SAP) about the "recommended" numbers for this!
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Sarang

    Denis,
Thanks for the response! That was my first answer to them also, and something that I have already asked the team to take a look at on our side.
In the meanwhile, I wasn't sure if the PG or PSO runs any benchmark tests every now and then, from data gathered from the the most typical app usage by a group of clients. I remember seeing something in the past about load testing from the PG, but not sure if something like this exists for n/w b/w usage.
I think your idea still is the best starting point, but benchmark results (if any) would be a great help!

  • Router RAM usage

    Hi,
i have a Question to Router RAM usage.
My Router have 512MB of Memory.
When i do a "show version" I get this otput:
Cisco ********* processor with 491520K/32768K bytes of memory.
This means 491MB for CPU and 32MB for IO.
Now i do a "show memory" and get this output:
                    Head    Total(b)     Used(b)     Free(b)   Lowest(b)  Largest(b)
    Processor   6353EB60   430707644    14276428   416431216   416363448   413930428

Now here are only 430MB Total RAM for the Processor. Why this? What is with the other 60MB Memory? How does these values are in context with the Output of a  "show region"?

    hello Thomas,
in order to understand the difference between both output, i would highly recommend you to go through the following mentioned example:
the output of the show version indicate the physical amount of memory... however, the following mentioned memory summary indicate the >>>>>> allocated + total == process memeory...
    Router>show memory summary
                Head       Total (b)   Used (b)  Free (b)   Lowest (b)  Largest (b)
    Processor   60AB4ED0   5550384     2082996   3467388    3464996     3454608

Total = the total amount of memory available after the system image loads and builds its data structures.
Used = the amount of memory currently allocated.
Free = the amount of memory currently free.
Lowest = the lowest amount of free memory recorded by the router since it was last booted.
Largest = the largest free memory block currently available.
Here is what you can learn from the show processes memory command output:
    Router>show processes memory
    Total: 3149760, Used: 2334300, Free: 815460
PID   TTY   Allocated    Freed      Holding    Getbufs    Retbufs   Process

Allocated = the total amount of bytes that have been allocated by the process since the router booted...
Total = the total amount of memory available after the system image loads and builds its data structures.
so if you add the above allocated memory to the Total amount of memory, this should be equal to the process Pool >>> physical Dram...

  • WTR1900 Internet Bandwidth Usage Report

    Hello,
I have many client devices connected to my WRT1900... When I click on the Internet Bandwidth Usage Report, the results have every device listed as 0.00 MB of internet traffic.  Well, every device on my network access the Internet constantly.
What am I missing to have this report actual provide some information?

    Hi @brudertl,
I also got confused with this before. I just tried to powercycle the modem, router and all the devices on the network. This might help.

  • What Is The Network Bandwidth Usage Report?

I'm looking at the "Network Bandwidth Usage" report and it's just a list of devices with no bandwidth numbers?  Is it ordered by amount of usage and if so, why isn't the usage displayed in the report and how do I see the usage for a device?

  • Determining actual DSL bandwidth usage

    Hello All,
I am seriously considering going to truly wireless (MiFi) internet after years of using DSL service.  However, there's one thing I have no data on:  my actual bandwidth usage month by month.
Obviously I know I can't go back to day one and get this data, but I find it impossible to believe that it cannot be obtained relatively easily.  There is an old thread from 2010 where someone implied that one could query the DSL modem or modem/router could be queried to get this data.  I was not able to post a reply on that thread, and I presume that's because it's closed to new messages.
Right now I have the latest D-Link router from Verizon and am able to log in to it without problems.  But this particular router has more possible options on more web pages (or their equivalent) than I've ever seen before.  Although I am a "tech geek" I have no idea where to look among the myriad options to seek out this data.
If anyone has an answer as to how to query this router, or knows of a web resource that tells you how to do this "generically," I'm sure I can do so after a little noodling around.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
    Brian

I'm not the most familiar with the D-Link routers Verizon hands out, but what you're looking to find is some information on the WAN or "Internet" end of the modem for how many bytes of traffic you have sent and received. This information may be for when the router was last rebooted or it may be from the last time your connection re-connedcted if it has dropped, so it isn't really accurate when it comes down to a breakdown of things. If you can get a byte count, it is easy to convert to Megabytes or Gigabytes from that point (Factorsof 10 in a general sense). By definition a Kilobyte is 1024 Bytes, but in some cases a factor of 10 is applied so a Kilobyte is 1000 Bytes. A Gigabyte can be 1024 or 1000 Kilobytes depending on how the data is being measured like previously mentioned.
    So, 40,960 Bytes / 1024 = 40 Kilobytes / 1024 = 0.039 Gigabytes.
Considering how large (or small) the data plans tend to be on a Mi-Fi device, consider the type of network traffic you currently have and gauge it against future use. If you currently have gamers in the house, a Mi-Fi should already be off the table as a full blown replacement as cellular connections are poor quality connections for playing video games on. Not to mention, games and patches can consume the cap quickly if the gamer has a lot of games that they play. Also, if your home is Netflix or YouTube heavy, without turning down the video quality you'll find it's quite easy to run over a cap. On a Mi-Fi myself, I have to restrict my YouTube access since I am picky about low quality video, and force everything to HD. I can slip in a few videos on a Grandfathered 3GB plan with Verizon but if I watch some of the common, 20 minute videos I watch, that's a Gigabyte per video on average. My normal net usage would burn me through the cap in less than an hour.
Just some food for thought, but keep in mind Verizon will most likely be unable to provide any sort of data usage counter. You may need to use third party routers or software in order to determine your usage per month.

  • Determining my monthly DSL bandwidth usage

I have been using Verizon DSL for several years now. I would like to know how I may check on my monthly bandwidth usage. I look at my on line bill and my account and find nothing. I installed the Verizon help software but find nothing.
I did find a bandwidth calculator which will give an estimate

  • Understand the bandwidth usage on production.

Hi all, i try to understand the bandwidth usage on production time on the network. I took one C3560G with all device are conected to 1000Mb/s.
    I make: show int gi0/1
      5 minute input rate 320000 bits/sec, 555 packets/sec
      5 minute output rate 9787000 bits/sec, 821 packets/sec
The total is: 10.1 Mb/sec (on this port)
In all active port the summary is: 47 Mb/s (input rate+output rate in all ports)
So, i used 4,7% of the total of the bandwidth. And in cacti (by snmp) software i see one device transfer data with a maximun of 24Mb/s. Why don't use more bandwidth if is available?
Some can give me a hand to understand this?
    Thanks!

So, the bandwidth is limited for the windows size. How i manualy set the RWIN? in a LAN is posible?
Yes, it's often possible.  How depends on the host.  Search the Internet for BDP and your host IOS, and you'll likely find how to adjust.
    PS:
BTW, too large a RWIN can cause a sender to send too many packets at one time which can result in drops.  Have you checked your transit interfaces for drops?
Ideally, RWIN should be sized for BDP; not smaller and not larger.

  • How can i calculate the bandwidth usage of my Azure subscription?

    Hi,
I know currently there is no API which provide bandwidth usage details. Is there any other way to find out my subscription's bandwidth usage?
    Thank you!

    Hi,
Please have a look at below thread.
    Here is a snippet.
The Azure SDK doesn't provide any billing or consumption information programatically. As lgorek stated, you can approximate usage with IIS And WCF performance counters. And you'll also be able to use your own logging to track traffic from different users.
However, you won't be able to track bandwidth consumed when users download content from blob storage. Well, you could, but only if all of your blobs were private and you streamed their content through your web application instead of direct links on your web
    pages .

  • Bandwidth usage with homesharing

I have recently found my bandwidth being used while streaming from Macbook Pro to Apple TV whilst using Home Sharing. Watching a 1.2 GB movie streamed from iTunes to Apple TV uses 1.2 GB of bandwidth!
I have reset my Apple TV but the problem continues.
I have disconected the Bell modem from the internet and the problem goes away. The Macbook streams efficiently to the Apple TV using the home wireless network.
Has anyone encountered this problem? And, more importantly, can anyone suggest a solution.
Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

    Hi diesel vdub
I am definitely using the Computers icon of my Apple TV. I have factory reset the modem but the issue remains. As I mentioned before when the modem is on, but disconnected from the internet, movies and videos stream fine to the Apple TV with no significant bandwidth usage.

  • 100 percent bandwidth usage

    Hi Cyril,
I'll assume since you're posting in the UC section that your question in some way relates to voice/video traffic on that link and perhaps not just to the length of time taken to copy large files.
you might want to consider implemented a QoS policy on your network if there isn't one already in place.
You can start with some light reading here.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/srnd/5x/50nstrct.html#wp1043960
It won't make your 1Gb files copy faster but it can help stop them choking off your other network traffic.
    regards,
    Paul
