Total system crash

Hello,
My issue is a very complecated one (for me and everyone who's worked on my laptop).  I bought my laptop, a Sony VAIO E Series 2 years ago.  Brand new, unopened box.  It's been a sony for 2 years.  Recently I had a total hard drive crash and, after taking it to the local repair center, I came home with my laptop in the Sony VAIO E series shell but it says it's now a Toshiba.  Nothing against the Toshiba brand, however the repair man and everyone else is stumped as to how this happened.  He said that he had to take it down to the original settings and that it now looks like it did the day I bought it, except for one MAJOR issue... it's saying it is a Toshiba Satellite L 75D-A7280.
How was this even possible??   The tech asked if I had purchased this from a friend, or used.  NO, it was a (supposedly) brand new laptop.
If this is possible, please tell me how.  Otherwise, the store I purchased the laptop from is getting some serious phone calls tomorrow!!  I'd take it to them but the store is in WA state and I'm living in MO.
Thank you,
Cyndy

Peculiar story. Did it look like the spec I've linked to above?

  • Total system crash caused by/during FF 6.0.1 update

    Here on rock stable Windows 7 64bit SP1 (Dutch).
    At 19:00 hrs (local time) today I was surfing normally when suddenly my mouse-pointer froze. Duration was a few seconds and then suddenly a complete black screen. No matter what I did, nothing happened. Only a message from my monitor that there was no signal. My PC was still on but no HDD activity or whatever. Had to do a hardware reset (first time since I have Windows 7).
    After a restart in Safe Mode (just to be sure), I did normal restart and all was fine again but still no clue on what happened.
    Did check log files and did see that at the moment of the crash FF had been updated to 6.0.1. And sure enough, when I started FF, I got the screen with info on the new build.
    All is fine now, was just the 1 crash. Somehow the update caused a total system crash.

    Looks like its been fixed for me, not by 6.0.1 but by - Todd Siechen from http://www.dvdthemepak.com

    Todd... I love you xxx
    After having a nightmare since first day of version 6.0.0 and still no fix after 6.0.1, even after Apple requested the files... You fixed my problem... Checked for duplicate fonts and found about 5, selected "Resolve Duplicates" and everything great, even with old projects... You should work for Apple!

    1) The first and biggest culprit we found to be causing problems is with font issues. In order to alleviate this problem, open Font Book and make sure all the Fonts that are turned on have no dots next to them. If they do then select them and select "Resolve Duplicates" from the Edit menu. If you are using a different font manager then use whatever tool is available to make sure no duplicate fonts are loaded. iDVD 6 is very sensitive to this.
    Many many many many many many many many many many many many many thanks.

  • ITunes V6.0.0.18 - Total system crash whole importing CDs

    Since installing V6.0.0.18 system crashes when importing CD. When I say crash I mean total system crash and automatic re-boot. The hard disk check reports truncated files in iTunes library (no surprise there the PC just crashed). When this happens is very variable sometimes at the start of a CD import sometimes on the last track and occasionally the import goes fine.
    There is nothing wrong with my PC or CD/DVD drive, it has run happily with every other version of iTunes from V4.x onwards and continues to be very stable with the exception of this import problem
    Any Idrea?

    Hi Martin,
    Sorry I can't help you, but you may get better help in the iTunes for Windows forum.

  • Yosemite total system crash MBP e2011 - revised logic board

    Since upgraded to Yosemite I got several system crashes and I needed to make several clean installations with no success.
    It starts with system freeze (no heavy tasks, last time happened when removing MS Office 2011 icons from the dock), spinning beach ball, needed to force shut down my mac.
    After restart, progress bar stops at 50% and that is it. Safe boot is same story. Single user mode and fsck -fy can not repair disk. Recovery mode and disk repair do not help. It says that disk can not be repaired an I need to backup my data and reformat disk.
    DiskWarrior and TechTol Pro can not find any issues with HDD.
    Right now I am back on Mavericks and it looks like it works. No issues.
    Anyone else?
    Another question: why in Yosemite my Toshiba 750Gb HDD is renamed to same name as my OS X boot partition on it?

    Your drive is no longer managed as an HFS+ volume, but instead it is a CoreStorage volume. That is how the drive now appears when managed by CoreStorage.

  • Leopard "Blue screen of death" - total system crash!

    So my new mac crashed. Again.
    Recently I've experienced that my mac freezes when I start to do some heavy work, like video-editing or Photoshop. A re-install solved the problem for around two weeks, before the same thing happend again yesterday:
    During a update of Final Cut Studio, my Mac suddenly freezes, and I had to do a forced quit. After this reboot my mac got to a blue screen (after the loading-apple-screen), and nothing more.
    After around 14 reboots, I decided to do a archive and re-install. This re-install took *14 HOURS*, and now it stops at the loading Apple-logo.
    Tryed to verify the disc with the Disk Utility software, showed up fine. Tryed to repair the permissions - came up some errors (apparently some missing files(?), before it said that it was fixed. Finally I tryed an extended hardware test - showed up nothing wrong.
    Then I got the idea that I maybe could make a 2nd partition of the harddrive, preserving the exsisting data, and install Leopard on that new one. But when I try to install Leopard on this, I get an estimated *21 hours* of time to install.
    I've also tryed to boot from a Linux-bootable USB-stick I use with my Acer-PC, but it refuse to boot from that.
    So I'm pretty much stuck right now. When I try to open the machine in Single User Mode, it tells me a bunch of errors, before the following lines is repeated:
    disk0s2: I/O error.
    0 [Level 3] [ReadUID 0] [Facility com.apple.system.fs] [ErrType I0] [I0Type Read] [PBlkNum 373453728] [LBlkNum 1356] [FSLogMsgID 591622195] [FSogMsgOrder First]
    0 [Level 3] [ReadUID 0] [Facility com.apple.system.fs] [DevNode root_device] [MountPt > [Path (usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib] [FSLogMsgID 5916221951] [FSLogMsgOrder Last]
    Could it be the harddrive, the RAM, or something completly else?
    Any help is much appreciated!

    Run DU and verify/repair the HD and also permissions.
    Run Activity Monitor and check your Page outs which are related to RAM usage. If it is high, it indicates you are using your HD in lieu of RAM for whatever reason. It's not good and at the minimum slows things down.
    You can also run a RAM check, such as Rember
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20050524014158525
    Also check that your computer is not overheating.

  • Trackpad gesture causes system crash

    Hello,
    In some cases a multifinger swipe gesture on the trackpad causes a total system crash. This problem is reproduceable when VLC video player is running. When I first minimize VLC and then make a 3-finger-gesture downwards the computer crashes. This also happens with at least the iOs simulator used by Xcode.
    I recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Yosemite. This probably did not create the actual problem, because these crashes also occured from time to time in a more random way. Now they are just more regular.
    These are the specs of my Mac and a crash report. Reports are by the way just create in a few cases. I can also post some log entries close to the crash, if that would help. But I'm not totally sure if they have anything to do with that.
    Thanks for your help

    Hi busrardn,
    If you are having intermittent but reproducible system crashes from specific trackpad inputs on your MacBook Pro, you may find the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful (apologies if you have already seen it):

  • Constant crashing - 'Total system failure'

    Hey, if anyone could help me with this problem I seem to have I'd be really grateful, I don't know much about what's going on.
    Basically, yesterday for no obvious reason a few apps started crashing on my iMac G4 running 10.4.9. Not being too technically gifted I used the solution to most of my problems, restarting the computer. Almost as soon as it started up though, it froze, so I had to restart again. This time safari refused to stay open for more than 5 minutes and msn messenger just bounced once in the dock and then stopped. I haven't installed anything dodgy recently, and the last thing that I got from apple was the 2007-004 security update.
    So I ran the apple disc utility, and got it to fix some user permissions, but when it came to the 'verify disc' test, it didn't seem to happy. It said there was something wrong with the hard disc but it couldn't fix it. I got this message:
    Verifying volume “Hard Disc”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Illegal name
    Keys out of order
    The volume The volume isc needs to be repaired.
    *** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***
    *** REBOOT NOW ***
    Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
    Unfortunately, have no idea what that means. Almost instantly after this though, some DOS-like black lines popped out from the left hand side of the screen, with white text full of numbers and computer jargon I didn't understand. As far as I could make out the kernel was involved It said something about a total system failure, and that it was waiting for a remote access code or something.
    Anyway the point is, my computer is a tiny bit broken Doe anyone know if this is something ordinary that can be fixed with a few clicks of the mouse, or is there a virus involved? My initial thought was that it could have been the recent security update, but that was 4 days ago and this started last night.
    Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi Ali_J;
    May I welcome you to the Apple Discussion Forums.
    First of all this is a virus.
    Do you have a backup?
    The error message "Keys out of order" indicates that you have some really serious problems which your disk. Do you have any idea as to exactly how full your disk is?
    If you have run your free disk space very low this can cause this problem. If not, you might have a wonky disk. To repair this problem you are going to need a much more powerful tool then Disk Utility. DiskWarrior may be able to repair this problem. If it not able to fix the problem for you about the only alternative then is to reformat and reload.
    Allan

  • [VIA] Via K7-266 Pro2 - System crashes if use more than 512 MB of memory

    Cannot use more than 512 MB of memory or system crashes. After running without a problem for over 2 years with 1 GB of memory installed, system started intermittent crashing, generally after 5 to 30 minutes of use.  I worked with the system manufacturer's tech support and they determined that it must be a motherboard problem.  I am hoping to find another fix rather than replacing motherboard.  System details:
    MB: Via K7-266 Pro2 (MS 6380)
    OS: MS Windows XP Update 1
    Bios: V3.6
    I've used Norton Systemworks and Norton Anti-Virus to keep system clean, and SpyBot and Adaware to clean adware
    During troubleshooting, we found that it will run with 512 MB of memory without problems, but not with the 1 GB I had installed.  My memory was 2 x 256 MB installed with the machine and 512 MB I purchased from Crucial and installed.  Computer ran over 2 years with all memory installed without a problem.  After the problem started and during troubleshooting, we found that any combination of 512 MB worked fine (either the 2 x 256 MB or the one 500MB chip), apparently in any arrangement of slots.  But as soon as I went to higher memory, I was subject intermittent crashes.
    Could not ID the source of the crash.  It sometimes happened when I was working with a single program open (various programs from IE to Excel to playing at GameSpy), had multiple programs open in background, or even when computer was sitting idle with only the startup programs active.
    During troubleshooting we also did a complete re-install of Windows XP, updated the bios to V3.6, and checked bios settings, but the problems persists.
    What else could be the problem?

    I am beginning to suspect a PSU problem.  I neglected to mention in my first post that when the system crashes, it does not freeze but has intermittent reboots.
    I ran the memtest86+ test first on the two old sticks of memory then on just the one new 512 MB stick; both passed the test.  I also used the Prime95 stress test on both sets, and both ran without incident.
    I used PC Alert to report CPU and case temperatures during the stress test.  The results maxed at 54 and 41 degrees respectively during the first stress test and 46 amd 39 degrees during the second test (I think part of the difference was due to a lower ambient, room temperature during the second test.)  The voltages reported during both tests were similar and were: Vcore1: 1.71v;  Vcore2: 1.26v; +5v: 4.76v; 3.3v: 3.31v; +12v: 11.60v; and -12v: 12.60v.  I am not sure if that information is meaningful, PCAlert showed all measurements as within the required range.
    I periodically have cleaned the dust out of my computer, so I don't think that is the problem.
    I used 2 power calculators with major differences in the reported status of the system. The test from pcpowercooling reported minimum and maximum requirements for my system (with the full 1 GB of memory installed) of 300w and 510w.  The alternate I found at jscustompcs (from a recent article about power supplies at Extreme Tech) reported a minimuum of 256w (no maximum is calculated with their tool.  The two tools had significant differences for memory, CPU, and PCI cards.  Off particular relevance to my problem was the difference in memory requirements; Pcpowercooling calculated memory requirements at 8w per 128MGB while jcustompcs used 12.5 per stick, resulting in different totals of 64w vs. 21w.  Which is right?
    One item that makes me think it is not the PSU, however, is that the problem would occur with the 1 GB of memory while the system was idle, thus I was not using any of the hardware devices.  However, I never experienced the problem while using a device (e.g. DVD, CDRW, or tape drive) - either with 500MB or 1GB of memory.
    My power unit is a Power Man #FSP 300-60BTV with 300w output, including +3.3v: 28amps; +5v: 30.0 amps; +12v: 15 amps; +5vsb: 20amps; -5v: 0.3amps; -12v: 0.8amps.  It also notes max output of +3.3v and +5v of 200amps.
    My system also includes a Leadtek nVidia Geforce 3 Ti400 graphics card, DVD, CDRW, HP 14 GB tape drive, 1 case fan, and 4 PCI cards (modem, network, USB2.0, and Audigy 1).  The USB card is connected only to a bus in my Dell monitor and I have not used other USB devices.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?  Do I need to replace the PSU?

  • White Screen - total system failure

    I just purchased a new MacBook Pro, 1.83 GHz, serial # begins with W8614. I set up the AirPort wireless base and at first I could only get an internet connection right next to the base - I lost it if I moved farther away. I tried again later from the next room and this time the internet connection seemed to work. I was browsing the web and suddenly the entire screen went white for a few seconds, then nothing. The screen went dark and the computer died.
    I unplugged it from the power source and plugged it in again, closed and opened it, tried every button, couldn't get anything to happen, the screen was totally dark. The computer was still on, though, because it was hot and the little white light at the latch on the front was on. I assumed the battery was still running, so I waited overnight for it to run out.
    The next morning it was cold and the latch light was off. I plugged it back into the power adapter and tried to turn it on. For a second I heard a flicker of noise and then nothing again.
    I called Apple tech support and they asked me to try a few things like resetting the power manager but nothing worked, it was still dead. So they arranged for me to send it in for repair. My question is: what could cause this kind of total system failure? It died completely in the first few minutes I was using it! Apple's always crowing about how reliable its computers are compared to the competition, but this performance is ghastly. It does not inspire confidence, to say the least. Can this kind of problem be repaired? Should I have any faith in the machine once it's returned to me? Yipes.

    I bought it from Amazon, not Apple. Amazon allows you to return opened computers within 30 days, but they charge a 15% fee. I was hoping when I called Apple tech support that they'd just offer to replace it right away, but I guess if you buy the computer somewhere else their policy is to try repair first.
    Certainly if Apple can't repair it, they'll send me another one. It's just that I never heard of a computer totally dying like that right after purchase - I wasn't aware how often that occurs. I'm just worried it might be buggy and crash frequently after I get it back - in other words, it might be a lemon. Hopefully I won't have to have it repaired over and over. Plus, of course I'm annoyed that I just acquired my shiny new expensive machine and now I have to wait two weeks before I can begin to use it.
    Thanks for replying. Do you have an idea what causes this type of white screen demise? Any reassurance would be helpful.

    After a complete system crash due to resizing my partitions I am now at the point of restoring everything step by step.
    Having had bunches of kernel panics I can now already boot again into my old system. However, / is mounted as read-only manifesting in error messages for programs that access /var and /usr. Furthermore /home is not mounted at all.

    After logging in as root in tty I have to proceed with the following to get my system running:
    # mount -o remount,rw /
    # mount /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-Home /home

    Hi WonderWoofy,
    I did a very dump thing. I deleted my /dev/sda1 ntfs partition, moved /dev/sda2 containing my lvm volumes to the left, resized /dev/sda2 and allocated the free space to my /home logical volume group. Lots of files ended up to be corrupt, I reinstalled all packages and ran fsck several times. Now at least it is starting again. I just found out that the entire root partition is mounted as read-only. In the following is the entire journal excerpt:

  • How can I find the reason for frequent system crashes?

    Hi all,
    since a couple if weeks my iMac (late 2009) has a system crash at least once per day; I don't know the reason or what software causes that. How can I find the source of this crashes?
    Thanks and regards
    Chris

  • Total System Uptime

    Is there a way to view total uptime (as in, since the OS was installed)? I'm curious about it.
    Even if not built in, does anyone know of an app or script which can keep a running total? Thanks.

    (ignore line 2, it's a bug that occasionally pops up, something to do with fast user switching or logging out/in, etc. It'll be gone when I finally have to restart)
    Sidney - This is from the uptimed program, which is pretty cool. I had problems compiling it ages ago but sorted it out eventually.
    Like you say Bill, I'm stuck on 10.4.4 now until the system crashes, which looks like never with Tiger so far... (I've had a few catastrophic crashes, system freezes, etc. but the thing always recovers if I give it enough time to itself! Only once did I have to ssh in and kill the windowserver process which took it back to the loginwindow and everything was fine). This was all started in the interests of OS testing you understand - OSX was touted as 'uncrashable' and all that - finally it seems to be true.
    I'm with you, my machines are always on, although I do let the disks sleep at night. Hopefully it crashes soon because the longer it goes the harder the decision will be...

  • System crash at second call

    Hello,
    the code below works ok the first time I make a call, but the second time leads to system crash, see error message below. What do I do wrong?? If I take away the marked line in the code, it works ok...
    Thanks in advance!

    From the docs, here are the two (C vs C++) ways of using JNI, so I think I misled you slightly.
    jdouble Java_pkg_Cls_f__ILjava_lang_String_2 (
         JNIEnv *env,        /* interface pointer */
         jobject obj,        /* "this" pointer */
         jint i,             /* argument #1 */
         jstring s)          /* argument #2 */
         /* Obtain a C-copy of the Java string */
         const char *str = (*env)->GetStringUTFChars(env, s, 0);
         /* process the string */
         /* Now we are done with str */
         (*env)->ReleaseStringUTFChars(env, s, str);
         return ...
    Note that we always manipulate Java objects using the interface pointer env . Using C++, you can write a slightly cleaner version of the code, as shown in Code Example 2-2:
    Code Example 2-2 Implementing a Native Method Using C++
    extern "C" /* specify the C calling convention */
    jdouble Java_pkg_Cls_f__ILjava_lang_String_2 (
         JNIEnv *env,        /* interface pointer */
         jobject obj,        /* "this" pointer */
         jint i,             /* argument #1 */
         jstring s)          /* argument #2 */
         const char *str = env->GetStringUTFChars(s, 0);
         env->ReleaseStringUTFChars(s, str);
         return ...

  • XP1800 Tbred & KT4V-L System Crashing issues

    here is the thing - I had this issue before and now its back again - I have a KT4V-L mobo and a XP1800 Tbred proc - if I set the chip FSB to 133mhz as per AMD/MSI manuals and leave everything else to auto - then the systems crashes and auto reboots sometime 10 seconds into Winxp desktop - sometimes 5 mins - but eventually - if I turn the FSB to 119mhz and leave everything to auto system runs fine - no issues - here is what I have tried
    1) thermal paste added to heatsink and fan
    2) clearing CMOS and loading BIOS defaults
    3) reloaded WinXP
    4) uninstalled 4 in 1 drivers
    5) turn 8X AGP off
    6) formatted the HDD and reloaded WinXP
    7) lots of different drivers for video card (MSI GF4 MX440 8x)
    8 ) different vid cards / hard drives /cdroms - nothing made a difference
    the Bios detects the Ram DDR 333mhz 256mb - which is correct - but the chip will not run at 133 mhz - dont know what else to try as system boots fine - loads XP fine - just when you start to run APPS - is when it crashes - I am using all on board stuff sound/lan/usb - all MSI drivers for it are loaded - I am at a total loss - new system not sure what I should try now - any suggestions  ?(

    I finally figured out what the issue was - it was the ATA33 Quantum 20gig hard drive - I put a ATA133 40gig maxtor in its place as primary master and now no issues at all - so either these new faster chipsets can not have a slow ATA33 drive on them or the drive is bad - the weird thing is - when the FSB was at 100mhz - 119mhz for the processor - the system was fine - but any higher and the system just keeps rebooting - does anyone now if this is a problem with just kind of drive or is it the speed is too slow for the faster systems - I would like to know as I the drive is still under warranty and I will send it back if it the drive not the speed issue  ?(
    Thanks for all your help, everyone, on this one
