Total Training CS5 Question

Hello
This looks like a wonderful forum!
I am new to CS5 and need to learn pretty much most of the programs it contains. I have started studying InDesign, PS, Illustrator, Dreamweaver and Flash in a course I am doing, but I am finding the tutors go too fast to keep up with.
I have been looking at the Total Training videos as a way of adding to my learning. I've also been looking for reviews on the videos. Whilst I have found user reviews for the Total Training videos for individual products (ie PS, Illustrator), I've not found any reviews for the Total Training CS5 video that contains all of the programs.
My questions relate to the quality of the training videos, and also which way I should go with them.
Has anyone used the CS5 Total Training video (the one for the entire suite), and what did you think of it?
I've found that sometimes training, when it applies to an entire suite of products, (eg Microsoft Office), gives only the bare bones of a program. If you want to learn it properly, you are better off buying individual manuals for each program (eg, Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc).
Is the CS5 training along a similar vein? In other words, are the individual Total Training videos for each product more comprehensive than the one that contains all programs, or is it about the equivalent? Am I better off buying individual training videos (albeit an expensive option), or does the comprehensive CS5 give a good education?.
Recently I borrrowed a book on MS Office and then a seperate book on Word and Powerpoint. The MS Office manual, whilst thick and heavy, barely touched on what you could do with Word and PPT, and was hardly any use to me at all.
I am making the comparison, because it is important to me to know whether Adobe training is similar.
thanks all for your help
cheers
Donna

Hi again Bob
I spent some time on Lynda last night, and I did like what I saw. I suppose I will have to set up another computer to run the training while I follow along? Is that how ppl. do it, or click back and forth between program and the video?
Although initially I was hesitant about the $25 (exchange rate makes a difference), I figured out that to do a workshop would cost $100's for 2 hour sessions at a time (and not able to do revision).
I had been interested in the TT CS5 package because I could get a student rate for it, but then how comprehensive was it, hence my comng here.
I think you've pointed to a better solution for me all round, as I need to learn several of the products quickly, and this way I probably can without spending heaps on videos, or less on a video that possibly isn't comprehensive enough, and manage cash flow at the same time (starving adult student w/ casual job only).
Think I'm sold. Thank you, wouldn't have known about it otherwise.
cheers
Donna

    Use a normal question, and do not add the score to the total score. That will give you a correct score at the end. But the total number of questions, that system variable will still take into account all questions. You'll need a user variable, and calculate its value by subtracting 1 from the system variable cpQuizInfoTotalQuestionsPerProject. Same for the progress indicator if you want to show it?
    Customized Progress Indicator - Captivate blog
    If you want to allow Review, you'll have to tweak as well. You didn't specify the version, and all those questions I now mentioned.
    And my approach, since you talk about only one question: create a custom question, because you'll have total control then.

  • What happen to TOTAL TRAINING, where i can buy a tutorial in DVD of a creative cloud CC Design: InDesign, photoshop, illustrator, acrobat?

    Many year ago, i bought the entire collection of DVD of Total Training of the Creative Suite Design, and came with InDesign, Photoshop, illustrator, acrobat, version cue, and was wonderfull learn all, now 10 years ago, i try to get now the Creative Cloud CC for Design, and only found tutorials online, or with Lynda.com any sugestions?

    Looking at the current options readily accessible on Adobe.com, for students and teachers it appears that the only options are to get the entire suite for $20/month or the photographers bundle (LR + PS) for $100/year thru Aug 29, so not sure what the price would be, now, so no there is not a way to get 3 apps for cheaper than the entire suite, since there is no single-app price.
    If it’s any consolation, for non-educational individuals, the single app price is $20/month and the full-suite price is $50/month, so for three applications like you want to use, it’d be cheaper to go with the full-suite than buy three individual app subscriptions.
    The bottom line is that as a student or teacher you’re able to access the full suite of apps for the price of a single app once you’re out of school, and that is as low as Adobe will go.

  • Pulse train generation - questions about PLL and jitter

    I need to generate a pulse train having a pulse width of 20ns and a period up to 100ms, selectable by software.
    The jitter requirement of the period is 10ppm (1us over 100ms).
    I thought to use PCI6221 to generate this pulse train but I could not find all answers in its documentation or anywhere else.
    1. Can the PLL be used to get a clock frequency to the counters of 50MHz out of the internal clock of 80MHz (5/8 factor)?
    2. Can the counters be set to output a pulse width of a single clock period in "Pulse Train" mode? (then the above 50MHz clock gives the 20ns pulse width).
    3. The datasheet states the base clock accuracy is 50 ppm, in "Frequency Generator" mode. What is the clock period jitter in "Pulse Train" mode, including the PLL effect?
    Is there any other counter/timer board that may be better for this job?
    Thanks.

    For this task first let’s take a look at the counter
    specification of the 6221.
    3. The datasheet states the base clock accuracy is 50 ppm,
    in "Frequency Generator" mode. What is the clock period jitter in
    "Pulse Train" mode, including the PLL effect? NI 622x Specifications
    page 9 states as you said 50 ppm for the “Frequency Generator” for the pulse
    train mode it will be the same 50 ppm as it is stated I below the: “General-Purpose
    Counter/Timers” title.
    I hope this knowledge base helps: How
    Do I Change The Frequency Output Of My Pulse Train On The Fly?
    You will not be able to generate a 20 ns
    pulse, since you can only derive integer multiples of the 80 MHz time base in
    this case, 1/40MHz pulses will be the closest you can get to a 20 ns
    pulse.  Also another note is that the
    frequency generator does not have a selectable pulse width, it is a 50% duty
    cycle signal.
    For more information look at the M Series User Manual  page 7-21.
    Two other products that you might be
    looking at are High Speed Digital Inputs and Outputs and Function Generators;
    take a look at those and post on the right discussion forum if you have any
    questions.

  • [JS][CS5] question, and comments

    HI All.
    I must first start off by recommending anyone seriously wanting to get into Scripting, or (like me) am fairly knowledgable, but needed the resource, to check out "InDesign CS5 Automation Using XML & Javascript" by Grant Gamble. (Amazon, Kindle etc...)
    I am sure I am not the only one who has made his way, stumbling and even hacking through code to produce scripts that work well, but not really understanding why certain things were done in a certain way. This books helps a great deal with this, laying a good basis for further development.
    Anyway, on to my question. In the afore mentioned book, he talks about making a global variable/object that is used to pass variables into throughout the script ie:
    var g = {};
    main();
    g = null;
    function main(){
    //code here
    //g.win = new Window("dialog",undefined,"New Window");
    //etc.....
    I can see how this works, with "g" being a master item, but why would this be needed? It seems more confusing to me, but maybe cause I am self taught, and not really been shown the "proper" way to use variables!
    Can someone explain the reason behind this for me.
    Many Thanks
    Roy

    Hi, Roy:
       I'm going to try again.
        Don't fool yourself. A difference of opinion doesn't mean both sides are right. It could well mean one side is wrong. (Maybe that's me. Maybe that's Jongware. Let's wait and see what he has to say.)
        In this case...this design pattern is just dumb. Unless there's something you're not showing us, like multiple functions that need to exchange data...in which case there is probably a better way, but it's hard to evaluate.
        The pattern is dumb because it does bad things with no upside. It makes the code harder to read. It adds potential conflicts with other scripts. And it has no benefit.
        I should probably have given you yet another example of something better. The very simple one. It's not as good because it still pollutes the namespace with main, but it's easy to understand and to read:
    main();
    function main() {
       var g = {};
       g.win = new Window("dialog", undefined, "New Window");
    Even ignorance of a fnuction is probably better, since you could wrap it in a function later on (as your program got more complex) and it would all still work. That is:
    var g = {};
    g.win = new Window("dialog", undefined, "New Window");
    But I suspect you're oversimplifying the program, since you told us that the point of this "technique" was to "pass variables into throughout the script."
    But your example doesn't demonstrate any "passing." It's not too clear exactly what you mean though.
    But here are some examples:
    var g = {};
    f1();
    f2();
    function f1() {
      g.able = "baker";
    function f2() {
      alert(g.able);
    There we have some data moving from f1() to f2(). But it's still poor. You should write it like this:
    main();
    function f1() {  return "baker";
    function f2(s) {
      alert(s);
    function main() {
      var tmp;
      tmp = f1();
      f2(tmp);
    But if for some reason it was really complicated and you needed to have f1() and f2() messing around directly with the data, then you could have a variable that was scoped to both of them:
    function main() {
      var shared;
      function f1() {
        shared = "baker";
      function f2() {
        alert(shared);
      f1();
      f2();
    main();
    But still you would never set a variable to null when you were done. The language has much better features than that! Use them!
    When the enclosing function exits, there's never any fear of anything else gaining access to the variable. No need to set its value, because nothing can access it! Cross the final } and you're set. Awesome!
    Obviously you put yourself at a level greater than someone needing
    this book, but I know my short comings, and can see HUGE value in a book
    detailing why certain practices are carried out
    Respectfully, this is not a reasonable answer.
    There are a lot of books out there. That you have found one that is better than forum posts does not mean it is a good idea to recommend it, especially when it seems to have problems. If you've read through several books and found this one to be better than the others, then that might be a good basis to recommend it. Or if you have searched high and low for books and failed to find any. Or if you were comparing it to Adobe's documentation on scripting. But by all means, do tell us the standard of comparison you're using...
    But it doesn't sound like you're doing that. It sounds like you're in one breath praising a book, without comparing it to anything else. And in the next breath, you're asking a question (rightly so!) about what appears to be a bad practice that is advocated by the book.
    That just doesn't make much sense.
    I hope I'm misinterpretting you.

  • Upgrading to cs5 question......extended vs. non extended

    I have the cs4 extneded version...is it possible to upgrade to the NON EXTNDED version as i really do not need the extended???

    The Adobe website addresses most of these upgrade questions.
    Yes, according to this page:

    Is your Photoshop CS4 Extended a standalone version and you want to upgrade to Photoshop Standard CS5 standalone?
    Or is your Photoshop part of a Suite?

  • NVIDIA Geforce 9400M and Adobe Photoshop/CS5 question

    Adobe states that their new software, due to ship April 30, will require a "... qualified hardware-accelerated OpenGL graphics card, 16-bit color, and 256MB of VRAM"
    Does the 9400M on the base model iMac and many other models including laptops, offer hardware acceleration to OpenGL?
    If I want to buy a new computer to run CS5, do I HAVE to buy the better models that do not have the 9400M? I'm sure the better model (with ATI Radeon HD 4670) would be better, but is it an absolute requirement? Adobe is not sure which models are qualified. I've been making a list of Intel based Macs that surely won't run CS5. A demo version is forthcoming to find out for ourselves. Any hardware geeks or engineers with tech info?

    Hi, this is a what I found out: The respective hardware is listed here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/831/cpsid_83117.html
    With my white Macbook 4.1 I have no problems to use all features of the regulard Photoshop CS5. Even when running on 2 monitors (I do the actual work on a 23" Apple Display and use the MacBook for my tools)
    Even a test with Photoshop Extended CS5 version has worked out but with lousy performance. In case there are people out who like to know, what can be done with OpenGL ... Adobe is great in hiding stuff:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/404/kb404898.html#updating
    Further information can be found here:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/404/kb404898.html
    Also a lot information can be found in the 600+ pages Manual. This is also pretty much hidden. You need to activate the onlin help and than click the text in the upper right corner which read something like "Show Help-PDF (38MB)" ... the wording in German is "Hilfe-PDF anzeigen (38MB)
    Or you download it here:
    http://help.adobe.com/enUS/photoshop/cs/using/photoshop_cs5help.pdf
    http://help.adobe.com/deDE/photoshop/cs/using/photoshop_cs5help.pdf
    There is, however, a big problem as soon as several applications use OpenGL. In my case it is EyeTV. I can either view live TV or record it. I cannot do both. Neither can I view a recorded Clip in EyeTV. For me as a non-professional it appears, that OpenGL allows a program to do TWO things at a time which can only be done, if the storage (RAM) is separated). Since Photoshop and EyeTV fight for the same spaces only one can be on first. And Photoshop seems to dominate... the normal view of the picture is produced by the regular chip while the bells and whistles a supported by the graphic chip. EyeTV may even freeze.
    By the way, there is an option, to stop EyeTV (and probably other programs too) from using OpenGL.
    http://support.elgato.com/index.php?m=knowledgebase&a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=3097
    It works i.e. the basics like viewing and recording works but I have decided to use always only one OpenGL-program at a given time.
    Last comment - though you did not ask: I have marked under "Finder Information" to open in 32-Bit modus. The program as such works also without this mark but plug-ins like those from NIK-software do not work yet. Their updates are coming:
    http://www.niksoftware.com/support/usa/entry.php?view=faqs/generalanswers.shtml#CS5compatibility
    I will post my question on a related issue separately = will an increase of the graphic memory to 512MB guarantee better performance or it it also a question, how OSX 10.6 manages the split various memory chips?

  • Training Report Questions

    Hello,
    I have two questions regarding training reports for Breeze
    curricula.
    First, I would like to review a curriculum report that
    includes the completion status for all users enrolled in a
    training. Currently, I see only the results for users who have
    logged into Breeze. I would like to also see those users who have
    not yet logged into Breeze for the training. Does such a report
    exist?
    Second, I have created Captivate movies that ask users at the
    second half of the movie to complete simulation click-boxes. These
    movies constitute my Breeze curriculum. It appears that the system
    will only log if a user has completed the simulation. Is it
    possible to capture whether the user has watched the video without
    taking the simulation exam?
    Thank you!

    On the reports... if you're looking for completion status,
    there's a couple of places to check. Did you try looking at reports
    by user? This will indicate complete, incomplete, pass or failed.
    If you're not the content author, please ask this person to run the
    report for you. Or if you have Admin rights, go to Admin, Reports,
    Downloadable Reports, Interations - Download. This will compile a
    .csv report - which can be saved to Excel. If using Excel, I
    typically go to Data, Filter, Auto Filter and then change column I
    for Date Created into Date format. Then you can filter out by
    course name and course status as Completed. Or, if you're a Manager
    and you'd like to see the training completed by your reports, go to
    Home, Manager Reports and click the Training Completed next to each
    employee - cumbersome though since you have to go to each employee.
    As for the Captivate movie... what are your thoughts to
    creating two separate pieces of content? For example, make the
    simulation one piece of content and then the exam another piece of
    content. At the end of the simulation, you can insert the link to
    the exam to provide a path for the learner to get to the exam. Jus'
    a thought...

  • Total Mac noob questions

    First, I have been a PC fan since the 8086. I have never owned anything but PCs. I build my own PCs and rarely ever have a problem. I keep my PC updated, secure, and virus protected, always...BUT I am getting REAL sick of Microsoft and I need some advice/help to get off of their platform.
    The main reason I am sticking to a PC right now (outside of my familiarity) is because I love PC games. If Linux or Macs (or any other OS for that matter) had the support that the PC does, I would switch in a second. I know that Macs do support SOME games but not nearly as many as the PC. Additionally, I am a power hog. I love the pure power of the PCs. I am afraid that a Mac couldn't touch the performance of one of my custom built machines but since I have never owned one, I don't know. So here are my questions:
    1) Can I install OSX on my existing Intel hardware? I know there are Hacks out there but does Apple support installing it on stand alone machines?
    2) How do the new Macs handle games? Has anyone compared performance of a Mac game to its PC game counterpart?
    3) Is there a way to custom build a Mac-like computer and install OSX?
    4) Are there any other options for my gaming habit that will get me away from Microsoft?
    Assume I know nothing about Macs and feel free to get into as much detail as you want.

    Hi BMCD;
    May I welcome you to the Apple Discussion Forums.
    I concur with what the other responders said so I will not repeat their comments.
    What I would like to add is that while I attempt to avoid games because I have found them to be much too addictive for me in the past, I did download a demo copy of WOW and Halo on my G4 prior to my upgrade to my Quad as a test for the 7800 GT in my Quad. What I noticed on my old G4 was that all of the video in both games was totally not smooth. Everything that moved did so with a very jerky motion to it. Whereas on the other hand when I ran the games on my Quad it appear more like a movie.
    In addition, on my G4 I had a difficult time understanding the speak of the characters. On the Quad this was not so. I was able to understand them much better.
    So if you want a Mac for gaming I would recommend the Quad with a 7800 GT graphic card. It is certainly a vast improvement over m y old G4.

    Martin , i have some question about the product (you have my private contact if you can't answer with too much details)
    Can we share oracle database with OES and other product like IDM or OIM? We have some issues with OIM and IDM in the same database we can't install in the same database because there are some requirement about NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS (OIM char, IDM byte)
    About integration with OAM, is there some out of the box connector? Can we use only OES without OAM?
    About provisioning users in OES repository, is there some integration out of the box with OIM?
    About platform and application integration which is your experience about heterogenous enviroment (jboss, tomcat, oas, bea with and without apache in the front end, linux, solaris, and windows) and application already deployed in customer enviroment?
