Totally at a loss . . . .

Yesterday, after much angst, Apple replaced my faulty dual core 2.3 ghz G5 with a brand new Mac Pro 2x2.8 ghz dual quad core. I added two more sticks of Apple RAM (ouch). So the computer has 4 gigs of RAM. I ran Xbench 3.1 on the MacPro, and it was slow compared to other like machines - LIKE HALF AS SLOW. Here are the results for the new machine:

Does anyone have an idea what's going on? These results make absolutely no sense.
I talked to an Apple Tech, and he said there might be a setting somewhere that is turning off one of the processors to save energy. I can't find anything like that. Any help would be appreciated.
Do I have a bum new machine?! Thanks in advance.

I really don't give much weight to Xbench. It hasn't been updated since 10.3.3 even.

One of the easiest ways to have trouble, slow performance is migrating from G5 to Intel Mac Pro which will lead to sluggish molasses.

  • Totally at a loss with Duplicates/Triplicates in iCloud on all devices

OK - first, I am not an Apple novice and know my equipment backwards and forwards....but this one has me totally stumped and wondering if anyone has any ideas...
Second -- I have never used MobileMe, so this is not a migration problem....
Third - sync in iTunes is unchecked so I won't get duplicates
So, setting up iCloud -- iPad, iPhone and on my Macbook Pro -- following the instructions exactly one step at a time as given in APple's own instructions...
Sync 1 with iPhone creates duplicates in iCal, Reminders, Address Book on both Mac and iPhone
Sync 2 with iPad creates duplicates in iCal, Reminders, Address Book on Mac, Iphone, and iPad -
Results in duplicates and triplicates in all of them
The only thing not effected is Notes -- which don't seem to sync at all now with iCloud...
Now, to trouble shoot - I've gone through all the steps suggested by others here, and all it does is recreate the problem when iCloud sync is initiated again...
I have even gone to icloud.com and deleted everything there to assure that isn't corrupted.
I closed iCloud on all devices and selected "delete" from the sync options.
I deleted all calendars, reminders, notes, Address books from all the devices.
I restored the calendars, reminders, notes, Address books from TIme machine from earlier in the week - about as accurate as I can get right now with all the messed up iCloud syncs...
Re-establish sync with iCloud and EVERY SINGLE problem with duplicates and triplicates is back...
    What the --
Anyone have any ideas at all?  I'm going to go talk to the Genius Bar on Saturday (no appointments tomorrow on iPhone launch day), but I'm not hopeful they know more than I do about these things -- so I am turning to the experts here...
AFter spending about 14 hours syncing resyncing restoring resyncing etc. I am not back to a clean tethered-through-iTunes sync, and have found iCloud to be 100% worthless....

Thanks MaxGuru, but that absolutely did NOT do it. That was one of the first things I tried.
OK -- so, I have returend from a TWO HOUR Genius Bar appointment and here is what we figured out: there was NOTHING that could be fixed to prevent the duplicates, not matter which solutions we tired (all those mentioned in the forum, and elsewhere).
What did we do?....First, I have always backed everything up, so I had backups to play with. Make sure you back up everything before you try anything else I mention here (i.e. do an export for iCal, Address Book etc. -- I worked from fresh copies from my Time machine backup from Monday before all this mess started to assure it was as clean as possible.)  I put those on my desktop for the time being so we can access them quickly and easily.
Step 1: delete all calendars, address book, reminders, notes from desktop, iPhone, iPad, and iCloud.com (yes, delete it all).
Step 2: put a clean copy of all that data back on your Mac (or PC) from your backup.
Step 3: In iCloud, turn off all calendars that they create that you are not using (work, home, calendar for example are calendars iCloud creates that I have never used since I have created my own and named them MyLastName, Holidays, etc).
Step 3: Turn iCloud off everywhere: on your iPHone, on your Mac, and on your iPad. Make sure you turn off every single feature, not just calendar. Totally turn everything off. LOG OUT OF ICLOUD.COM, DELETE iCloud account on your iPad, DELETE Icloud account on your iPhone.
Step 4: Restore your calendar, notes, address book on your Mac from backup (do not restore reminders - those are gone, never use old ones again, you'll create new down the road -- it just will not sync no matter what from an old copy at this point)
Step 4: Hard-wire sync your iPad and your Mac through iTunes. You'll have to turn on all the sync features. DO NOT sync your iPhone (unless it will be the only thing you sync with your iCloud and mac). Go back into the Info tab and after syncing turn off all the sync features you turned on (contacts, calendars, etc)
    Step 5: Disconnect from iTunes
Step 6. Log back into iCloud.com on your Mac. Leave it be.
Step 6B - and this is important: On both your iPad and your iPhone, turn off all calendars that are not yours as per above.
Step 7. Log back into iCLoud on your iPad.  Your iPAD will become your primary sync source. Now go ahead and one at a time turn on the address book (wait a bit, check icloud.com on your Mac to make sure it was connected properly). Then turn on the calendar (wait a bit -- depending on how big your calendar is, it might take 5-10 minutes for it to all upload to iCloud from the iPad). Check iCloud to make sure it is there. Same thing with all the other features -- one at a time from the iPad first.
Step 7. From your Mac, go to Preferences>iCloud> and turn on one feature at a time. It should now be okay without any duplicates being introduced. Give it a few minutes to make sure everything remains stable.
Step 8. Now connect your iPhone to iCloud-- be aware this might cause duplicates on your iPhone -- not to worry, there is a way to fix that. Add one feature at a time as you recreate your iCloud account on your iPhone. Start with Address, then then others...
Step 9. Check your iPhone calendar. You might have duplicates on your iPhone. That is okay. DO NOT do any further sync at this time. If you only have one copy of your calendars on your iPhone, you are good to go, and your iCloud connection should now be stable.  Step 9B -- If you have duplicates on the iPhone, go to iCloud settings on your iPhone, and uncheck Calendars. When it says delete all on this iPhone, select yes. Wait a moment. Turn your iPhone back on. It should within a few moments push one single copy of the calendar to your iPhone. Now your are good to go.
Why this is such a hassle, is anybody's guess. We literally had two Geniuses at my local Apple Store working on this with me, and we had Apple's Tech Support on the phone the entire time through the process.  When it takes about 7 people to correct a simple iCloud tech problem, you know there is something seriously amiss and there will be a lot of problems with people using iCloud for the smartphone features rather than the entertainment features down the road.
Anyway -- hopefull this might work for some of you. If not, good luck in finding your solution.
The overall answer seemed to have been to a) completely delete all old data and backup clean copies, and b) use the iPad DEVICE as your primary inital iCloud sync source. How backward is that, when your desktop/laptop should always be one's primary source.

  • Resume from sleep causes total Interent connectivity loss

This just started happening about a week ago. I used to be able to close the lid on my iBook, open it later and resume working online normally. Now when I open the lid or resume from sleep mode, the airport shows that it is connected, but I have no Internet access (server not found messages). I've tried turning the Airport off and on, but this doesn't seem to fix the issue. I have to totally restart the iBook to regain any Internet connectivity. Any ideas if this is due to a recent update? Anyone else having this problem? The most recent update I remember install was one for MS Office 2004, but it's not just affecting Entourage, no Interent apps will connect after sleeping.

    Hi Kib,
I've had the same exact problem intermittently for the entire time i've owned my ibook (1 year). The problem was intermittent enough that I never took it too seriously. But, just this morning it would appear my internet connection is permanently gone. No amount of restarting or renewing the DHCP will work. And, as in your case, airport indicates that it is "connected". Seems like a degenerative condition. I'm going to call apple and get some help. I just got apple care and I'm going to take full advantage of it, especially after all the trouble i had with my ibook display.

  • Totally at a loss, please help

    Hi!
Just got my first iPhone 4 which I'm very pleased with. I can't get my head round iTunes at all. Which is odd because I'm only 24 and have no technophobias.
My problem is this: I want all my music sorted by album artist, not by contributing artist. I'd like this as default when I open iTunes. I enabled the 'Album artist' column and asked to sort by that, but I found that more than two-thirds of my library mysteriously had no album artist specified. Some of my tracks in the same album had this field filled, and others were imported without this information. No they aren't illegal tracks. So my library is still fragmented. Also, some pieces of album art won't appear, and not for rare pieces of music, either.
Is there a way to retrieve this info? I can't believe you can't enter it manually, and customise it how you want! I'm not an Apple griefer, but Windows Media Player has always been intuitive and given a lot of manual control to the user. Which is how I like it.

The normal sorting can be overridden by the Sort fields, including Album Artist. When you right-click and choose Get Info, these can be changed on the Sorting tab.
Artwork retrieval from the iTunes Store depends on having an exact match right down to the spacing and punctuation. If the Store can't find it, you can get art from a web site and paste it into the track(s) via Get Info, Artwork tab.
BTW, personally I find iTunes much more intuitive than WMP, which is not to say it doesn't bring its share of frustrations. This Forum should be a good resource for any issues you run into.

  • Loss of sound after updating IDT High Definition Audio Codec.

HP Support Assistant said a new IDT HI Def Codec driver was available so I downloaded and installed 6.10.6417.0 after which I have no sound output. I am not sure what driver version was installed before the update but I have since downloaded and installed 6.10.6330.0 and rebooted but still have no sounds. The device is enabled and Windows says it is working properly (which it isn't but then it is Windoz).
I am now totally at a loss as to how to proceed other than a clean install of Windows which for obvious reasons I would rather not do.

    Hi,
    Try the following.
Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp53001-53500/sp53281.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, shut down the notebook.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.
Let Windows fully load - it will automatically load an audio driver, but just let this complete.  Then open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices.  Left click 'Speakers and Headphones' once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button - check if you now have audio.

  • Making the move to 16:9, but totally confused about what settings to use!

Hi, It seems to me that since all new TV's being sold are wide-screen, it is time for me to stop making videos in 4:3. But I am completely stumped by the procedure to work in 16:9. I have shot my footage in standard definition, 16:9. The final product will be a DVD created in DVD Studio Pro. I would like the picture to fill a widescreen TV, and.... when played on a 4:3 screen, I would like it to fill the width of the screen and be letterboxed on top and bottom.
I think that I am correct to capture this footage into Final Cut Express, using Easy Setup, and choosing 'Anamorphic'. At least that gives me a 16:9 screen in FCE.
But can someone tell me what settings to use in DVDSP when I when I import that video? I tried to import Anamorphic video into DVDSP, and went to Preferences, and chose 16:9 Letterbox. I got a wide screen, but my footage came in as a squished 4:3 image. I'm totally at a loss, and would very much appreciate any help you can give.
    Thanks very much, Bob

Yes, Anamorphic is the Easy Setup you'd want to use in FCE.
When I say it's distorted, that means anamorphic is recorded to tape squished (much like how it imports into DVDSP for you) and that the format demands being unsqueezed during playback. Sorry, if I scared you.
The encoding settings are also available in DVDSP's Preferences under the Encoding tab.
Also - and this is the single most important element of this workflow - in addition to setting the default Display Mode to 16:9 Letterbox, be sure to confirm that this is not overridden (for whatever reason) after you've placed your clips onto a track. So check the Inspector and make sure Display mode is correct. (It's been known to happen once in a blue moon and, if not readjusted, will mean that your DVD will not display correctly on any proper setup)

note: the methods and constants were required in the assignment.
    Thanks for any help.

It looks like you forgot to put break statements after each case in your switch statements. Like:
    switch(this.suit){
        case CLUB:
            tempSuit ="C";
            break;
        case SPADE:
            tempSuit ="S";
            break;
    <etc...>
}So all of your switches fall through to the last case. Also, use the code tags when you post code, because it hurts my eyes not to have syntax highlighting :-)

  • No Usable Wi-Fi After 10.6.3 Installation

I installed the 10.6.3 update a week or so ago when it came out. No apparent problems. When I went back to the web, my late 2009 MacBook Pro seemed to be stuck. It takes forever to load web pages on Safari or Firefox. I just spent 30 minutes unsuccessfully trying to do a bit of banking that used to take a few minutes. The page never fully loaded. I am using a 1TB Time Machine that had given me no trouble whatsoever until I installed this update. I tried installing the "combo update" last night hoping it might overwrite the previous iteration and work, but this morning the message was image not recognized. I'm totally at a loss.
Does anyone have a suggestion about a fix?

AKC322, are you running anti-virus software on your computer? If so, the slowdown might be happening due to that software coping with the updated files in 10.6.3.
Regarding the slowdown in the browsers, you could try using a non-browser as an alternative download test, to see if the wi-fi slowdown happens there as well. Open Terminal, and enter *cd /tmp* and *curl -o testing.html http://www.myonlinebank.com/* (substituting your usual banking URL). The curl program will display download speeds as it goes.
About the unrecognized combo update image, you can check on that in Terminal as well. First you’ll need to change your current working directory to where your downloaded image is; perhaps something like *cd /Users/AKC322/Downloads* (substituting your usual login). From there, *ls -l MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.3.dmg* will display something like
    -rw-r--r-- 1 AKC322 staff 822146518 Mar 29 08:57 MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.3.dmg
(presuming that you’d downloaded the non-server combo update). The fifth field (822146518) is the size of the image in bytes. If your image is smaller than this, then you might have an incomplete download; the download can be resumed where it left off by *curl -C -R http://support.apple.com/downloads/DL1017/en_US/MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.3.dmg* (presuming that that Apple server supports partial downloads). If your image is the right size, then try running *openssl dgst -sha1 -c MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.3.dmg* on it to make sure that it has the right “signature”, that no corruption occurred during download. The output should be
    SHA1(MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.3.dmg)= 72:c1:26:35:cf:83:ab:6f:e0:28:dd:f8:1b:0a:f7:35:78:53:f7:36
If your image is the right size and it shows the signature above, then I’m not sure why the image wouldn’t be recognized.

  • My macbook pro was defective from the beginning. what to do?

I bought my macbook pro about 4 yrs ago in my college year, and right after I found out there was some weird noise being made while the laptop was running.
And compared to my school mates' macbook, mine got easily heated up and had a loud noise while running.
So I took it to my school tech department and they said since its warranty is effective, why don't I go to apples, and so I did.
At first, at the genius bar, a technician said it will cost me 400 and i was struck with shock ..
fortunately, the technician found out that the laptop was defectively manufactured from the factory from the beginning and I was free of the fixing charge.
However, my macbook pro's got a new problem. The screen goes black while running. I can hear the computer running but the screen is total pitch black.
I went to apple store again to the genius bar to ask for the fixing fee.- It was 300 bucks for fixing it and they said there was a problem with
the computer's logic board whatever. I bought the laptop for 1200$ and they are asking me for 1/4 of the price the laptop.
The genius bar asked me if I ever dropped the laptop or left it somewhere near water whatever. I HAVE NEVER DONE THAT and the laptop was
sitting on my loveseat in my room and when I came back from work and turned it on to get on internet...it didn't turn on.
What am I supposed to do?
I am so upset bc I have a paper to turn in for the beginning fo the next month, but since I can't afford to fix the computer, I am totally at a loss.
I bought the laptop at Bestbuy when there was the event going on, which if you buy a mac, it comes with an ipod 2nd gen.
When I bought it, there was a lil scratch like thin on top of the cover of the laptop, but I just thought like
it will get a scratch while using it anyway and i just let it go and I bought a cute plastic cover for that laptop.
If I knew that that was something like a defective product, I wouldn't have bought it or exchanged it with a new one.
Where do I complain about this? whom do I talk to? why does apple distribute defective products to customers and make us to pay so much money to fix it after the warranty is done?
Apple should be responsible for this.
For someone like me, who's a poor student who can't get anymoney from anywhere (I am being supported by my church), what am I supposed to do?
I want a responsible answer from Apple.
or if anyone knows how I should deal with this, please answer me.
I am really at a loss and desperate due to my financial situation. Thank you.

I had a very similar issue.  I am not sure which machine you have.  I purchased 2 MacBook Pro's mid 2010 2.66ghz.  One is dead the other failing.  I am with you, you shouldn't have to purchase an extended warranty on a premium product.  I have seen a lot of posts on this subject.  Seattle Rex took Apple to court last year over the same issue and won in small claims court.
    http://www.seattlerex.com/seattle-rex-vs-apple-the-verdict-is-in/
I am sure a class action lawsuit is not far off.  It is fraudulent to sell a product that is known to be defective.  I purchased my laptops from Apple.com in 2011 after the testing program had already started.  From what I can deduce the logicboard and Lion do not get along.  CNET has several articles on this issue.  Here is the notice from Apple that is very hard to find.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088
Here is an article from CNET
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57586703-263/graphics-related-crashes-resur face-for-mid-2010-macbook-pro-systems/
Maverick is supposed to help but for me that is a day late and $4000 dollars short.
If you do bring your laptop in, print out the notice.  The guys and gals at the Genius Bar will not know about this issue.  They tried to sell me a new MLB too as well as trying to wipe my hard drive.  Good luck, I hope this helps.

  • Emails to/from server always bounce to some domains

Sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong place. I've wasted 2 full days and sporadic time throughout the last 3 weeks on this.
I recently migrated a site from Server 2003 to a new Windows Server 2008 server. Ever since the move, my emails to and from my email address bounce from the server. I've spent 3 weeks with tech support on both ends getting nowhere.
Here's a rundown of the problem and what I've done about it:
Problem 1: Email from my domain (call it mydomain .tld) sent to the new server (call it serverdomain .tld) always bounces
Emails sent from mydomain .tld to serverdomain .tld get bounced back INSTANTLY with the error "550-The mail server could not deliver mail to "user@ serverdomain .tld".  The account or domain may not exist, they may be blacklisted, or missing the proper
    dns entries."
Problem 2: Email from serverdomain .tld sent to mydomain .tld always bounces
Emails sent from serverdomain .tld directly to mydomain .tld always bounce back after a 5-10 second delay with the error "550 Sender verify failed."
All emails were sent directly from server to server using webmail interfaces.
    Possible problems/solutions I've explored:
    Spam Filtering:
The new server's mail server (SmarterMail 2010) has spam filter bouncing disabled. No blacklists or greylists are defined.
The server hosting my email account is a shared hosted server, so I don't have access to its spam settings, but I have been assured by their technical support that the server's IP address is not blacklisted or blocked in any way.
Blacklist tests at MXToolBox.org all come up clean.
    SPF Records:
I have defined an SPF (TXT) record for the domain "v=spf1 ip4:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -all", which points to the IP address of the mail server / web server. I do not have a type (SPF) record as Windows Server doesn't have an option for this type of record.
SPF test passes without errors at www . kitterman.com/spf/validate.html. Test email through spf-test@ openspf.net returns no errors.
    Reverse Lookup:
I have a working reverse IP set up and is confirmed by checking it at ipadmin.junkemailfilter.com/rdns.php that points back to serverdomain .tld.
    Testing through Telnet actually works:
I followed the steps at technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb123686.aspx to log into the SMTP server on the new server's end and was able to successfully send an email manually to the new server, even using the same email address that keeps failing to send
    directly to the server.
    Some observations from the logs:
When sending email from mydomain .tld to serverdomain .tld, NO LOG ENTRIES are created at serverdomain .tld. This leads me to believe something is blocking it before it ever connects to the server.
When sending email from serverdomain .tld to mydomain .tld, the following log entries are created:

I'm totally at a loss. This is not just blocking email to/from me, but it has blocked email to at least one other domain name as well. I can get no useful help from tech support on either end.
(I had to put spaces in all links in this post because it wouldn't let me post links. Also, this forum crashes every single time I try to post in IE9, but works fine in FireFox. How ironic is that...)

    I can only help with Exchange, but generally speaking, that line;
13:02:57 [60055] RSP: 550-The mail server could not deliver mail to user@ serverdomain .tld.  The account or domain may not exist, they may be blacklisted, or missing the proper dns entries.
Mean the server checked the GAL (it's global adress book) and it refused it. It's usually a simple antispam and antirelay configuration. The strange thing is the log after, that the email is received...
That lead me to think the antispam software/hardware is badly configured, and for a reason X, it does not block the email from passing by it's filter. So yes, their answer is correct, but that mean all email is filtered in some way, so it's not
    correct in some way too.
Does they configured your domain alias correctly and such basic information ? I have a big doubth at this point.
Run some wireshark to be sure the problem is not in your CIE, and after pass that to their IT's tech, if the email is sent correctly, and you receive a server answer back, then something in their config is not ok.
Don't forget that if the packet X is sent on your WAN to their datacenter, they are responsable for the correct receiving when it enter their datacenter.
(edited: A last point; don't forget they HAVE to run a antispam's box, as the MX is the same IP, so basicly the antispam box dispatch the email to the correct server (like check
https://www.barracudanetworks.com/ns/downloads/Setup_Guides/Barracuda_Email_Security_Service_SG_US.pdf) you will see what I mean, a list of domain and server)

  • Firefox installation does not initiate. Have tried different versions but the pop-up only remains for less than 1 second then closes down.

Firefox crashed without even opening the main window - just the apology pop-up appeared. Nothing I could do would open the programme. MS Fixit identified a problem with IE8 and put it down to AVG8 Link Scanner. I disabled this, and tried Firefox again. It worked perfectly for a time. Later, when trying to open Firefox, nothing happened - no crash pop-up, no navegation window - zilch. I tried to re-install the programme, but as soon as I execute it, the "Extracting" pop-up opens then closes immediately. I tried to uninstall Firefox using the Windows control panel, but this did not work - Error 21, whatever that is, then tried to reinstall again with the same result. The Firefox uninstall did work. I unistalled my AVG8 anti-vir and tried again - nothing. I downloaded an older version of Firefox - same result. Something is blocking any activity concerning Firefox and I am totally at a loss to identify it. Can anyone help, please?

    2. Have you tried restarting that PC?

  • Do i have to re-import all my CD's

it's been about two years now since i have ported from windows to mac and I am still not seeing my iTunes database sorted out.
right now i am getting an "iTunes could not locate this track" error and when i navigate to where it should be the list of songs in this folder appears to be incomplete.
is there a METHOD for grabbing all the data that is for some reason no longer in my iTunes database (like importing all MP3 from my TIME MACHINE BACKUPS?!) or do I need to reimport all my CD's?
Can someone help me with this as I am totally at a loss trying to fix this over two or more years. I have /already/ gone ahead and imported all my CD's about a year ago to try and start fresh...
    TIA

I have had no such problem. You can also ways backup up your iTunes library in case you have a problem so yu can just restore the library.

  • IMac kernel panic -- rule out hardware and software! any ideas?

    Greetings forum
I am totally at a loss on what to do next. Im writing about a mid 2010 27 inch iMac recently upgraded to Mountain Lion. Shortly after this the computer started to experience issues of rebooting itself as clicking apps such as safari. So began the troubleshooting process!
First tried clean install -- ie format HD and internet recover install
everything installed fine and then restart issue again as it experience kernel panic
ruling out the Software I was convinced it was a memory hardware issue so I booked appt at genius bar and took it in-- the computer was there for 4 days and the tech said they did extensive testing and could find nothing wrong with the hardware tests!! and they had no advice other than to try a fresh install (again)
I took it home and let it sit for a couple of months as I didnt want to bother with it right away
So I pulled it out again yesterday and decided to do a fresh install after format -- again within 5 min in kernel panicd! This time i think I was searching in safari. BELOW is the crash report
I also decided to load up the diagnostic tool off my iMac disk to test hardware (did the extended test TWICE) and NO TROUBLE FOUND (see photo)

  • Creating a bootable USB stick (Windows/syslinux issue)

    Hi everyone,
Lately I decided to install Arch on my new machine, using USB drive as there's no disc drive (out of fashion, all that stuff yk). After a ton of research at wiki I finally downloaded Arch ISO (so everything above is just a foreplay) and started my efforts to create a USB stick to boot from.
Firstly, when trying with simple USB Writer, it gave me an error message "An error occurred while opening the target volume.", which I thought back then, was just the tool's issue. Then I moved straight to creating bootable USB manually, by downloading and installing syslinux. Everything went fine and according to wiki's scenario until, once again, third-party program ought to do something with external drive.
At that stage, I'm getting syslinux' error message "Could not load drive: access is denied". Googling taught me that this, pretty obviously, happens when one's not running prompt as admin - but I am! Now I'm totally at a loss what to do.
(What it says in the last line after re-encoding is "access is denied" in Russian, and the upper panel - that I'm running prompt as an admin)
    Stick details:
A new one, was formatted with wiki-recommended Rufus USB partitioner, so that it's now FAT32, 4kb block size ARCH_201408.
P.S.: Everything is done on another machine as the new one has only old XP on which I have no intention to work with.
P.P.S.: Answering the registration question took me an hour, mostly 'cause of that the first online prompt didn't work with the command correctly, this thing is not Linux-newbie-friendly at all though I understand it might be meant to be so

There are four methods listed in the wiki for writing the Arch install iso to a USB device under Windows. You have tried the first one, USBwriter, and ignored the other three.
I'd suggest you try them all. You should also bear in mind that although the ISO you're using comes from Arch, the OS you're using does not, so any Windows issues that may affect what you're doing would be best addressed in a Windows forum.
