Totally Lost

Question

I am attempting to create my first live type project, and I thought I followed the instructions in the tutorial, but when I press the space bar, it doesn't play. I used the silver liquid texture at its default duration of 3:10, added my text, applied the "scroll with pause" effect, stretched out the durations of the text and the effect to match the texture duration, and yet the duration in the little window at the top left of the timeline reads 00:00:00:01. Shouldn't it read 00:00:3:10? Any idea what might be going on?

Thanks, now that's helpful.
This is what I originally did (I went step by step as I watched the tutorial):
I went to Textures Tab in the media browser, and chose Liquid then Silver, chose "apply to new track"
I went to the fonts tab in the Media browser, and chose Monotype Corsiva and chose "apply"
I chose the text tab in the Inspect or and typed several lines of type in the text box
I chose the effects tab in the Media Browser, and chose scrolls & crawls, then scroll with pause, and then apply
I dragged the various elements to the same lengths. My initial mistake was that I had the in and out points at the same place. I corrected that, setting the duration in the window at the upper left of the time line to the actual duration.
I see all the elements you mention. I hit the "home" key before hitting the space bar, but for some reason, the text is there on the background from the very beginning. It doesn't scroll in or out. Obviously, I am missing something. Any idea what?
Please know that I am working too. As my PC was getting old and cranky, I switched to a MAC when I was assured that I would be able to do what I wish to do (create slide shows with titles, music, and transitions) using FCE, and that it would be simpler and more "intuitive" on a MAC. It turns out that the Apple Care program that I paid for doesn't cover either of the programs (FCE & Aperture) I need to use. Easy Media Creator, (a windows based program) which was the program I had been using, would do all I wanted to do, and more easily than FCE, but it's too late now. I feel swindled, and have little patience for snarky answers chiding me for my ignorance. I have wasted weeks trying to put together a project which would have taken me two or three days to do on a PC. The computer for me is a tool to accomplish a job, not something I enjoy screwing around on. I don't need someone telling me to learn more before asking for help. As long as Apple and those who use their products the attitude that one should be a wizard to use a Mac, it will always be a minor force in the computing market place. I know that in the past 5 months I have talked a number of people out of purchacing one. Even when you pay for Apple Care, the help hours are too limited, and the suggestion from the people at the help desk to go to the nearest Apple Store (3hrs @ 70MPH for me) is all to glibly given.
So, again thank you very much for your actual help, that's what I really needed. I hope that the information I have given you will suggest some solution for my problem, short of junking a $5,000.00 machine and starting over. As I have been working for several weeks on the main project and a couple of days on the Live Type titles, I hope you can excuse me if I am annoyed by folks telling me to go back to the book.
