Touch on non-primary external monitor controlling primary external monitor

SP3i5 connected to two external touch monitors (AcerT232HLs) via minidisplay on dock to hdmi on monitor2 and minidsply to hdmi on monitor3 and usb3s from dock to each monitor.  SP3 is monitor1. Displays work fine.  Touch works fine.
HOWEVER, touch on monitor2 control monitor3 display.  monitor3 is set as the primary monitor.  I get that this is NOT a bug since each monitor is in effect two device (display and touch) AND since most touch input devices WOULD want to control
the primary display.
So either there is a setting somewhere to explicitly redirect the touch on monitor2 away from the primary and TO display of monitor2 or there is a driver issue.
In W8.1 I believe there was a setting as part of the 'touch tablet' settings where you would monitor by monitor go through a click process to say that the touch should control the display on its own monitor.  I can't find that in w10 (maybe it's all
supposed to happen automatically? or maybe it just hasn't been gotten to yet?)

Yesterday I found the same problem. I disconnected from a Dell Projector and then later that night I noticed that my computer still showed two monitors. I'm still able to connect to an external monitor and it will detect it. However, immediately after disconnect the phantom display is back.
A little annoying because I'm always having application windows open on that phantom display.
Also I noticed that when I plugged into the projector the color was off significantly, as if there was a bad connection. I tried a variety of connectors and connected my laptop to a variety of different external monitors and all of them work flawless except for the Dell Projector. (I didn't try it on another projector because I only have the one.)
My conclusion is somehow when I disconnected from the projector I hadn't fully shut down or gone to sleep or my computer was in the middle of a disconnect when I closed the lid and this interruption as my computer transitioned from 2 displays to 1 created the phantom display. Hope to see a solution to this.
Thanks

  • Unable to set external display as primary/main monitor on Macbook Boot Camp

I have an LG Flatron W1942TQ monitor hooked up to my Macbook right now. I am able to extend the desktop to this monitor and use it dual display style, but the Start menu remains on the Macbook display.
I want the monitor to be the primary monitor. So I go to check off "Set as Primary Monitor" in the control panel, but when I do that it suddenly reverts back to having the Macbook monitor as the only display, shutting off the LG Flatron.
Just wondering if there is a driver issue or something I am overlooking as to how to have my external display as the main monitor.

I think that works for Mac OS but in Boot Camp Windows XP OS does not have that option. I did try to drag the XP system bar at the bottom onto my external display but no luck. I am having the same issue as Jack Ryan and Philtones. I am a mild timpered guy and love my MBP but this agrivation just about has me ready to throw it.
I hooked it up at a LAN party & the display wouldn't come on at first. It finally just started working & I played several games in mirror mode. Then, I decided to correct the resolution and couldn't get mirroring back on no matter what I tryed. I also can't switch primary monitor.
Please, someone, has anyone found the solution?
Windows is a very bad 7-letter word.

  • Setting an external monitor as primary on a MacBook in XP (w/ Bootcamp)?

Hi, I'm trying to use a 17" LCD with my macbook to take the advantage of "Extended Desktop".
I know it's very easy in OSX where you just need to drag the menubar from one screen to the other in the display setting window. I was wondering if there is any way to do this in XP (w/ bootcamp), too. Although there is a check box in XP's display settings that offers the option, everytime i check this "set this monitor as primary" box and hit "Apply", the two screens always remain unchanged. Looks like XP always sets the Macbook screen as the default primary one.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This may help but then it may not. I tested it with my iMac and non-Apple second display so results may vary.
With both the MacBook and the second display powered on go to the Apple Menu > System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement
Drag the Menu Bar to the second display and then drag the display itself to the other side of the second display. This should allow acces to the dock and Menubar on the non-Apple display and achive your desired results.
Note: If I sleep my iMac the second display stops so you may need to keep your MacBook open to use these settings
    Hope that helps

  • I have a MacBook Pro 17 inch and I just destroyed the screen.  Can anyone tell me the keystrokes to turn on the external display as primary?

I have a 17-inch MacBook Pro with a destroyed screen.  (My son put it on the top of his car and drove off and it fell off.)  Can anyone tell me the keystrokes to make an external monitor the primary monitor?  I can see only the upper left side of the laptop screen so I CAN select system preferences.  I can then arrow over to system preferences and down to make selections I cannot see.  I don't know then what to do or IF I can make the choices needed to make the external monitor primary when all I can do is make keystrokes on items I cannot see.  It's an older (about 2008) MacBook Pro and I would like to use the external monitor to see to connect an external hard drive and download files to install on a new MacBook.  My son might know the iOS but I don't.

    • I don't know then what to do or IF I can make the choices needed to make the external monitor primary
This is the left side of System Preferences in OS 10.8.3. (if that is not what the MBP is running post back). By the way, if you can grab the top of that pane you could move it over to the top far left. - Same for any pane.
Do this with the external monitor connected and powered on.
You need to click on Displays., and then grope for Arrangement and click there.
When you get there, the two screens are shown.
The trick is to grab the white stripe (on the left in this image) and move it to the other rectangle. You do not have to position it exactly, it snaps into place when it gets close.

  • Hey, can i clone my Macbook Pro internal hard drive and then paste it all onto a formated external hard drive, then make the Mac use the external as the primary hard drive?

hey, can i clone my Macbook Pro internal hard drive and then paste it all onto a formated external hard drive, then make the Mac use the external as the primary hard drive? please help for i only have around 618mb left out of 189GB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    If what doesn't work?
If cloning your internal drive to the external drive is not successful, I expect CCC will tell you so. Assuming that doesn't happen, you will have a bootable replica of the internal drive on the external drive once CCC has finished.
You can then do any of several things:
    1. Replace your internal drive with a much larger one (320GB or 500GB, or even larger), and clone the external drive's contents onto the new drive so you'll have all your data in one place. Note that if you do this, you'll also need to buy an external drive that's large enough to back the new internal drive up on.
    2. Boot from the external drive as a temporary measure while you clear at least 30-40GB of data off the internal drive, allowing you to keep using it and saving small amounts of data to it. The external drive will then contain the only copies of the files you've deleted from the internal drive, so you'll need a seond external drive large enough to back both the other drives up on.
If you can't comfortably clear a minimum of 30GB off the internal drive, you really need a larger internal drive right now, and you shouldn't bother fooling around with the inadequate one you have — you'll just quickly overfill it again.
    3. Replace the optical drive in your MBP with a large conventional hard drive, giving you two hard drives inside the machine. You will then need one or more external drives large enough to back up both of the internal drives.
If you sense a theme here — back up, back up, back up — you are correct. It's flat-out foolhardy to own or use a computer without maintaining complete, up-to-date backups of everything at all times.

  • Use an external screen as primary screen while the lid is open

is it possible to use an external screen as primary screen while the lid is open on a white MacBook (Lion)?

I can't get this to work either, and I really want it too!
Noisy fans, and overheating laptops are not a pleasant experience when working next to one all day.
Please apple, at least give us the choice!?!
I presume running two screens rather than one also puts more of a drain on the graphic card.

  • Dual monitor (w/laptop): external monitor is blank.

Hi! just installed arch for the first time a day ago. Right now what I'm working on is on getting my second monitor running (mostly for development purposes... and movies ^__^).
I'm using Arch64 with the open ATI driver and KDE. Whenever I connect the external monitor, the monitor seems to detect a connection occurred (the "check video cable" message disappears when I connect it and comes back when I disconnect it), and so does KDE. When I open my display settings, it tells me a new monitor was connected and asks me if I want to configure it.
Then I choose to configure and use the two monitors giving the following screens (right now I'm at college testing with monitors in there, thus the low resolution, but behavior seems to be exactly the same):
(EDIT: resized. In case of wishing to read full images, just take the "resized/" out of the URI)
However pretty the full screenshot looks like (... I just mean that even if it looks like the second monitor is working), the monitor remains blank.
Using arandr (xrandr's gui), it is exactly the same result. I might be doing something wrong (almost certainly I am ) (EDIT: decided it was a good idea to show what I did with xrandr).
In /home/<myuser>/.xinitrc my file looks like this:
    #!/bin/sh
    # ~/.xinitrc
    # Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1440x900 --pos 1600x0 --rotate normal --output LVDS --mode 1600x900 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal --output HDMI-0 --off
    if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
    for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
    done
    unset f
    fi
    exec ck-launch-session startkde
    # exec gnome-session
    # exec startkde
    # exec startxfce4
    # ...or the Window Manager of your choice
The laptop's model is Toshiba Satellite L775d. I'm not sure what other information should be required in this situation, but I will be loving to give anything that isn't compromising
    Thank you!
(PS: so far Arch has treated me nicely let's see for how long)

I wondered the same. I initially only used KDE for it (that's how it worked in other distros, but I'm guessing Fedora and Kubuntu have way more stuff on top). I moved to xrandr later after searching for options and I did select "Ignore" when KDE asked me to configure and just went ahead with xrandr. The same still happens.
Thanks, I hope I gave the right information.
EDIT: Adding some extra information. I tried rebooting with the CRT cable connected. When the kernel initiated its loading, the messages only appeared on the external monitor. It was afterwards (it was pretty quick, but I will assume it was when radeon's modeset hit) that the external monitor went blank again and, in that situation, the laptop's monitor went blank (so none of the two monitors worked... and I was so hopeful!)

  • External display's brightness can no longer be controlled with external keyboard in 10.8.2

I can no longer control external display's brightness with external keyboard.
Until now my external keyboard controlled external display's brightness and MBPr's keyboard MBPr's brightness. Now the only way of changing external display's brightness is via Display preferences which is cumbersome
Is there any way of going to pre 10.8.2 settings?

I noticed that the keyboard and tablet were'nt working when plugged into a usb hub or monitor usb port.  I had to plug in the keyboard and tablet into a mbp usb port where they worked.  For some reason, after plugging them back into the usb hub they worked again.  Could just be dumb luck though.

No. There is no "USB Target Disk Mode".
Just so we're clear, when you start your Mac mini in FireWire Target Disk Mode (TDM - holding T on startup), do you see a FireWire icon on the Mac mini's display? IIRC, it's not required that the Mac mini be connected to a display for TDM, but it would help diagnose whether or not the mini is actually starting in this mode.

  • LabView for Linux/Mac: integrate external UI controls

    Hello,
for Windows, there's the posibillity to integrate (UI-)controls written in annother language using ActiveX or .NET. Is there an equivalent solution for Linux and Mac?
I.e., can I use a GTK or Carbon/Cocoa based control in LabView on Linux or Mac? I know I can utilize external libraries, but this will not allow me to display any UI elements alongside LabView controls on the same Panel without putting considerable effort in subclassing the window, which is also not so easy on Mac.
    Thanks in Advance
    Alexander Hofmann

    Hi Alexander,
there is no such functionality that allows you to integrate external UI controls under Linux or Mac.
However you can call Frameworks or Shared Libraries under Linux and Mac in order to communicate with external applications.
Alternatively you can go the other way round and create Shared Libraries of your LabVIEW application, that can be called within external applications.
Below you can find some helpful links reagrding this topic:

  • Turning off internal monitor while using external one

    Hello, Apple Support Communities.
Before OSX Lion, anyone could turn off internal monitor while using external one, by waking up computer with lid closed, and the internal monitor will be kept turned off. But now, -I wonder what made Apple to think this way- Lion will turn on the internal one back on.
I don't care about all sorts of reasons why should I or shouldn't I desire to this. I just want it, because I have nice big monitor, which is apparently bigger than my Macbook Pro. Besides using double monitor will just exhaust my poor laptop. -mine is bit old-
I found ridicoulus answer from community, saying I should try fridge magnet. Sorry, but I don't want risk my whole computer, especially my HDD from getting magnetic damage. It happened so many times, -thanks my little bro- so now I am sick of magnet. I don't think Apple will cover this AKA magnetic damage anyway. -It wouldn't just damage, just erase your HDD-
    So.... Any helpful insights? Thanks.

Nevermind. I found solution. Though it cost me 24 bucks.
Now Apple is seriously making me to consider to roll back to sucking Windows.
    Thanks Jobs!

  • How can one use Mission Control with two monitors?  Please bring Spaces back

How can one use Mission Control with two monitors.  With Spaces I could treat each space as a single desktop.
    SyBB

I use two monitors at work and have no issue. I have my mail set to use Desktop 1 and iTunes set to the second monitor of Desktop 1. I have browsers set to Desktop 2 and Fusion and RDC set to Desktop 3.
Two things that may help you. In System Preferences > Mission Control, disable the setting "Automatically rearrange spaces...". This screwed with assigning applications to certain spaces. And the other thing is don't use full screen on apps that support it. This just makes your second monitor superfluous.
