Touch pen tool appearance

How can I get the touch pen tool to appear on a file if I'm opening an image.  It only appears now when I open a blank work space.

Yanina,
What happens if you File>Place (the PDF contents, if any, of) the troublesome file in a new document, then try the Pen Tool?
If that works, you most likely have a corrupt file.
One thing often tried first is to create a new document and File>Place the (PDF contents, if any of the) corrupted one, as already suggested above, to see how much may be rescued that way.
Here are some websites where you can see whether it can rescue the actual file, and if it can, you may pay for a subscription to have it done,

As far as I remember, the first one is for Win and the second one is for Mac, while the third one should be for both.

  • Re: Mysterious paths in pen tool appearing!

Thanks Mylenium, What about on the bottom right. If you look closely there should be only an arc but its trying to close off the path I think.
I've watched countless pen tutorials and they all say that you can jump back to you project later and contiue adding and removing paths. I must be doing something wrong!
For some reason the paths of my pen are not showing when I select everything with direct selection, nor do they show with General selection.

    PF,
I am unsure whether you are thinking of a closed path or an open path (the image in post #4 seems to show just two open paths.
Either way, if I understand it in the right way, you may use Object>Path>Offset Path with the desired distance (setting the number).
For closed paths you will get one closed path outside; to get an inside path at the same distance just use the same negative number.
For an open path you will get a kind of surrounding path with straight end segments through the end Anchor Points. You can Direct Select each of them and delete, and after that you will have one path on either side at the desired distance.

    charmi,
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • Bounding box appears with pen tool.

Currently I am trying to make a mask around text so I can reveal text to make it look as if it is being written by hand. I place the text down with the text tool, I then used the pen tool to trace the text. For some reason though, I can only place a few anchor points before a bounding box appears around the anchor points. I can no longer add anchor points to my current path.
If I use the pen tool to select my created path, I still cannot add more anchor paths. If I restart after effects I can sometimes place a few anchor points on the path then the bounding box reappears and I cannot place anymore.

I usually set a solid to a vibrant color, change the blend mode to screen or multiply so I can see through it, and create and animate may masks on this solid. The solid is then used as a track matte. It lets me accurately see what I am doing.
If you close your path or miss a click when drawing a path you will occasionally get a bounding box. Pressing escape or deselecting the layer, then carefully selecting the path again should let you continue. It just takes a little practice to be able to add points to a mask.
BTW, if your mask is complex and has a lot of vertices then you should make sure that you have all of the points in place before you start animating mask position. You'll get better interpolation between keyframes that way. Here's an example:
I"m using both the marquis selection and transform option as well as animating single points here to do a simple roto job.

  • I have noticed while using pen tool that I have to wait before the small square appears.

I have noticed while using pen tool that I have to wait before the small square appears. Tenth of a second, but this is disturbing on a daily basis. Is there any solution?

It seems that in your version of InDesign, the image preview is grayed out while you are editing the picture frame with the pen tool. Not the case with my version of CS5 for macintosh.
But I think this is a bad way to work. If you want the path only to affect text wrap, then edit the text wrap path. This is more versatile than editing the frame because you can have text appear over part of the image visible below text. This of a bird in flight in a light sky. The text wrap can surround the bird so text can appear in the sky. Your method does not permit this.
If you are editing the frame’s path because you also want to crop the image, then you’d be better off doing that in Photoshop by adding either a clipping path in the Paths panel or a mask in the Layers panel. If it’s an Illustrator file then add a clipping mask.
I find InDesign’s pen tool and general path editing to be significantly inferior to Illustrator’s. If I need to have an editable path in InDesign that I would draw much more easily in Illustrator, then I do that and copy the path back. It comes in as a simple unassigned frame, which I can then convert to a picture frame or a text frame and copy/paste the contents into the new frame. That may suit you if the above suggestions are inappropriate.

  • Touch Screen Pen Tool Signature on Form (back to hand tool)

Built a simple form, name, address and a couple of other text input form fields, all is well.
Added a graphic area for a signature. There is a button to click with "execute menu item" "...Markup tools > Pencil Tool"
This turns the Hand into the crosshairs so the user can "write" their signature in the box with a stylus on the touch screen.
Still all good, but I then have, or want an "undo" button in case they mess up. Menu Item "Undo" is not available,
and I have yet to find the Javascript call for undo as in __app.execMenuItem("Save");__. But the real
problem is I cannot find an interactive/button driven way to get the Pen tool back to the hand tool. Also there is a Save As and Print button
at the bottom that works great, given it is clicked with the hand tool. The end users are not going to be very saavy so clicking the hand tool
in the menu isnt much of an option. Any ideas?

No, and I even tried pressing the spacebar key to see if it was stuck.

  • Half second delay using pen tool. Lag between mouse up and when point appears on screen

Regarding the pen tool, using Photoshop CC 2014.2.2 on a PC— There is a half second delay between the moment I click the mouse and when the path point shows up. I've disabled the tablet input service on my computer, which worked, after a restart, but eventually this delay starts happens again. This is immensely inconvenient and I need a permanent solution. If anyone has any sort of answer please tell me. I will try anything.

I am experiencing the same problem. It's very annoying! The issue comes and goes... some days it works like it should, some days it's lagging. I couldnt figure out why so far, neither could the adobe support via chat...
Here's a video showing the issue. Make sure to watch in 720p and turn on the volume, so you can hear when I click.

  • Pen Tool vs Tablet

I've been using Photoshop for a long time, but I'm new to Illustrator and Flash. I feel like I should learn how to use Illustrator before I tackle Flash, but one of the biggest obstacles is the pen tool - what a pain in the butt!
An art school student told me I can simply substitute an electronic drawing device (e.g. a Wacom tablet) for the pen tool. Is that true, or would using such a device carry some sort of liability?
If a drawing tablet is a good way to go, what size should I get? I'm not yet familiar with various brands, but the Wacom/Intuos appears to be most popular. However, it's very expensive, and I don't have a clue what size to get. I assume a 9 X 12 device would be the best choice if I wanted to trace a picture measuring 9 X 12 inches. But could I instead get a tablet half that size, copy half the picture, then copy the other half and paste the two halves together in illustrator?
To put it another way, what size is most popular with web design professionals?
    Thanks.

    Mordy, Doug:
David is confusing AI's Pen Tool with a stylus, due to the bad advice he received from some dolt who impied to him that one is a substitute for the other.
    David,
    I'll try again:
Forget all about whether any given user likes or doesn't like stylus pointing devices.
Historically and currently, in vector drawing programs like Illustrator the primary drawing "tool" (feature of the software) is generically called the "pen tool". Specific programs may call it the "Bezier Tool" or something else, but it's long been the primary interface element for accurately drawing Bezier paths. In short, the Pen Tool is the heart-and-soul of a vector drawing program. You need to use it, regardless of what kind of hardware you are using for your computer's input device.
Ever since stylus input devices first appeared with so-called pressure-sensitive features, various programs have provided additional and/or modified software features to take advantage of it.
That started in raster (paint) programs, which added the ability for the width of their "paintbrush" features to be controlled by the pressure input of a stylus.
Later, vector (draw) programs started doing something similar, adding features which involved closed paths being drawn with varying "widths." Those are usually called "brush" features. Other vector features can also be modified to allow some of their settings to be modified on-the-fly by the pressure button of a stylus. Examples of that include some of the settings when using Symbols, or a "brush" tool like Illustrator's recently-added Blob, etc.
But none of that pressure-sensitive stuff changes the fact that the software pen tool is still the
primary tool for drawing accurate Bezier curves, point-by-point. And the pen tool doesn't have any pressure-sensitive or stylus-targeted features, because the whole purpose of the pen tool is to draw paths deliberately, accurately, and economically, point-by-point.
    So you can
use a stylus while using the Pen Tool (software) in Illustrator, just as you can use a mouse while using the Pen Tool in Illustrator. Either way, you still need to learn to use the Pen Tool, because it is still the heart-and-soul of every mainstream vector drawing program, including Illustrator.
So the art school student who led you to believe that using a stylus input device somehow obviates the need to learn and to use Illustrator's Pen Tool has given you a
    very wrong impression.
All the praise or criticism of stylus input devices in the world doesn't change that. Drawing paths point-by-point is the
primary way to use vector drawing programs. That means using the Pen Tool, and that means using it whether the object in your hand is a stylus or a mouse.
So get yourself a Wacom 6x9 Intuos tablet because that's the only way you're going to find out if you like using a stylus. You may love it so much that you never touch a mouse again. Or, it may end up just collecting dust until you get over the thought of throwing away (or giving away) somethning you spent a significant chunk of change on. But regardless, get busy learning Illustrator's Pen Tool, because you're going to need it either way.

  • Mesh tool appears inactive?!

    Hi,
I did not find any other similar questions.
I am trying to use the Mesh Tool, but it appears to be inactive. The cursor looks like a cross with a small crossed circle nets to it (like a "do not pass" road sign). I do not know what I did wrong. In Preferences I have "Object selection by path only" deselected, so it can't be it.

    Thank you for your reply.
    I am following a tutorial:
    http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2012/10/03/gradients-galore-reviewing-illustrators-extensi ve-toolset-video-tutorial/#more-140468
I don't think the image is a Compound Image. I used the Ellipse Tool and the Pen Tool to build it. I am working in Outline Mode (just like the person in the tutorial).
Now I think it might be the problem. I probably have to switch between Outline and Preview constantly to make it work. I am working on the 7:45-12:00 part of the tutorial. (if you have the time to check this out)

  • How to Extrude a path created with Pen Tool

    Hi All
I have created a path with the pen tool (the brown part), and now I want to extrude it, but it extrudes the whole containing block (See image below)
Now I have tried everything, from grouping to compound paths etc, but nothing works.
How do I extrude my path?
    Thank you

...and Texturized it AFTER the extrusion....
Applied a Grain Texture after the extrusion.
    For clarity:
Always pay attention to the Appearance palette. The order of the items in the Appearance stack reflects the order in which they are applied.
A so-called "live effect" (of which both 3D Effect and Grain Texturizer are examples) is an operation which is automatically re-applied after you make an edit to the object to which it is applied. The effects are applied in the order in which they appear in the Appearance stack, from top to bottom.
    1. Ellipse Tool: Draw an ellipse. Leave it selected.
    2. Apply 3D Effect.
    3. Apply Texturize Effect.
Look at the Appearance palette. 3D Effect is listed above Texturizer, and the whole 3D rendering is texturized.
    4. Appearance palette: Drag 3D Effect to below Texurizer. The unwanted extrusion of the entire texture image appears.

  • Pen tool: Resize image inside a layer/ stop pen outline / white space after crop

I have 3 noob questions all related to the pen tool.
    1. Whenever I use the pen to outline something and drag the image to another psd file I see a grey pen outline around the image.
    ex. http://screencast.com/t/GmKWAr5UH
    2. Whenever I outline with the pen and then select inverse and then delete the background, the background becomes white. I want to drag my outline into my new file but without a white background. it should be transparent so it appears like a collage.
    ex. http://screencast.com/t/Rh4Uvq4xBM
    3. how do I select an image inside a layer to resize it. Nothing I do creates handles around the image isnide the layer.

Theres some basic stuff you are not understanding…
    1. In Photoshop there is the pen tool for creating abstract vector edges, and selection tools (lasso, magic wand etc). You need to turn the results of the pen tool into a selection. Best way is using the the Command/return shortcut, or command clicking on the path in the paths panel.
2 layers need to be , not - If you want to delete areas (make them transparent). To do this either go to Layer/New/Layer from background - or hold Option and double click the Background layer.
3 See answer 2, and use Free Transform (command T)

  • Advice on using Pen tool to create shine effect?

I'm very new to the pen tool. I want to draw a shape at the top of my rectangle and lower the opacity of it to make it appear similar to a top lit shine like something that Apple uses.
I place my first anchor point in the upper left corner, move the pen to the center of the rectangle (based on what the smart guides tell me) and drag the handle to the right, I then plot the anchor point in the upper right hand corner and it finishes the other side, Lastly, I close the path by clicking back on the first anchor point.
1.) is this the correct way to use the Pen tool?
2.) can anyone suggest anything else I might do make this effect look better?
    Thanks in advance!

In the tarnsparency Panel there are the blending modes which work on individual object groups or layers
and you can also give each object transparency as well.
You mightwant to create a highlight or some kind of reflection.
I am sure you can do better than I did I used an Effext>Styklize>Feaher to soften theedges of the highlights though often highlisht are no soft.

  • The Pen Tool

Once I close the selection of the pen tool how do I copy it to a transparent canvas?
I right clicked and chose copy but when I pasted it onto the new canvas the whole background came with it.
Or maybe the path isn't completely closed because I don't see the marching ants (sorry if that's not the right term lol).
I still see the anchor points but it looks closed to me.

    Hi Eyelene,
When you create a path with the pen tool it can appear closed but in order to make a selection area out of it you must:
    1. Select the Paths tab in the Layers panel.
    2. Right-click and choose Make Selection.
    3. Adjust your feathering/edge options and click OK.
    4. Now your path is an active selection!
    Cheers,
    Michael
