Touch screen phone without data plan

The Samsung u370 which is available at non-Verizon corporate stores (e.g., Target); it is also sold at Walmart under the name that's something like "re-release Reality)"

"I have just gotten my samsung reality for .95 cents at Walmart 7 days ago (8-11-11).  what I found out buy calling verizon and some on line reserch was that verizon does not sell the Reality or the sch u370 but only outside venders. [...]  After purchasing it and removing it from the box, which says Reality all over it, the phone part # is SCH U370 on the ID plate on the phone."
Very few complaints on this forum about it. There are about only three that I have:
- wallpaper has to be stored in the phone's internal memory. When wallpaper is stored on the memory card, the phone will usually revert back to the stock wallpaper
- music playback is fine as long as you listen to music through either the phone's speaker or through bluetooth headphones/headset. When you listen to music through plugged-in headphones/headset, there is a high likelihood that the phone will freeze or stop reading the memory card; rebooting the phone resolves either the freezing or the memory card reading problem.
- when you use the file viewer feature, there is a non-removeable banner that says that the file viewer software was intended for a model u820 and that this phone is not a model u820

  • Android Phone - No Data Plan

    Hi there,
I'm looking foward to buy a new phone, preferably an android phone (had in mind the Google's Nexus S).  But heres the problem, I don't plan on paying $30 monthly for the data plan when all I want is for it to connect through wireless.
Is there a way that I can get my hands on an android phone without data plan and use wireles for T-Mobile?

Ok, I guess I misunderstood the OP's needs.. I thought he wanted to use it in Wifi only, which is what confused me.. Now that I udnerstand, I agree. He'll put the T-Mobile sim in, and in a few days they'll realize he has a smartphone and start charging data fees per their contract, correct?
As to your question about "Why have a phone without a phone"? I have a Samsung Epic 4G. Without the data service, I can still do a lot of great things with it. It's like a miniature netbook, but faster. Even if I didn't want a data plan, a lot of the phones coming out make nice alternatives for bigger, bulkier laptops. Not to mention how widespread Wifi is.. The only time I even need the data plan on my phone is when I'm driving, any other time I'm surrounded by Wifi. Heck, when I get a new phone, this Epic may make a nice gift for someone that can't afford a laptop.

  • Am I able to activate Samsung U 370 without data plan?

I want to replace my basic phone. Am I able to activate Samsung SCH U370 without data plan?
    Thank you,
    Suresh

Yes.  It's a very old phone, but yes it does not require a data plan.

  • Virtual keyboards on touch screen phones

Hi, Can I activate virtual keyboard in a touch screen phone using J2ME? My application (developed using J2ME) takes input through keyboard in a textbox (this textbox is a custom item and drawing on a Canvas). I can't use my application on a tocuh phone, because i need the activate virtual keyboard. How can i open/close the virtual keyboard for entering text in touch phone?

Just an untested suggestion. Maybe you could Display#setCurrent a TextBox (or a Form containing just one TextField) when your CustomItem receives the focus. Then the touch screen device's implementation should take care of launching the keyboard as appropriate. You would need a Command (e;g; 'Done') to return to the Canvas.

Apple is not a carrier or service provider.
Contact the carrier that you intend to use and ask them about their service offerings.

  • Activating phone requiring Data plan, without the data plan?

Anyone know of a store activating a phone requiring a data plan without purchasing the data plan? If so, which store? This is where I will purchase the phone I want if I stay with Verizon.
    Thanks.

what is the issue - why won't Verizon allow an iphone or any other smart phone to be activiated without a dataplan?
What is the purpose other than money?  Is there a legit reason?
I have an old 3g Iphone I would like to activate for my child and allow him to use data on wifi only, but.....
Their network and their right to charge what they want and what policies they want.  If people don't like the terms it's best to look elsewhere.  Currently there is no carrier in the world that doesn't require a data plan for a smartphone.  T-Mobile US is one that only if you bought the device outright you don't need one, BUT it's dependent on the plan you get.
Also the iPhone 3G will not work on Verizon.  Difference in technology...

  • Webmail without data plans

Just picked up a curve (aka 'learning curve' hehe) and I am having a hard time trying to configure for webmail . I do not have the 'configure internet email' option on the phone, only the enterprise server option. After reading way too many websites my impression is this function is controlled by the service provider. If you do not have BIS or some kind of BB data plan then you cannot use web based email thru the BB email function (you can check webmail thru a browser if you really want to be uber-frustrated). I found one post that alluded to this way back in 2009 or something. Can someone confirm this is still the case in 2013? This would save me and possible thousands of others looking for the same thing. If you have a data plan then this function would be available.
Let's hope 10 is way more user friendly!
    Cheers.

    Hi dimwit
    Welcome to BlackBerry Support Forums
Still now if you want to use Personal Email Services you need a BlackBerry Data Plan / BIS on your account .Most application works over WIFI without an active BIS but a few like BBM, Email services require a BlackBerry Data Plan.

  • Buying new phone, Internet/Data plan....

I have broke the screen on my Samsung SCH-i760. I am planning to buy the Samsung Omnia I910 off eBay, but I have no use for internet on my phone so I was wondering if I would have to pay for the internet service to get it activated?

Yes, when activating the Samsung Omnia (SCH-i910), a data plan of $29.99 or higher is needed.

  • Searching For a Reliable Touch Screen Phone

The family is moving up to the share everything plan and we are shopping for 2 smart phones.  Outside of the Iphone, is there a particular model that has the fewest touch screen freeze issues?
    Jack

The iPhone is great choice and in regards to another quality device I would recommend the Droid Razr. The Droid Razr is the thinnest 4G LTE smartphone, has a scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass screen, and a water-repellent nanocoating to protect against water and everyday spills.
I have the Droid Razr as a personal phone and have never ran into freezing issues; overall it has been a great device. That is just my opinion though, you will want to make sure you pick a phone that matches your needs and usage, but the Droid Razr is a good place to start.

  • Phone upgrade, data plans ... I am SO confused.

The nearer the end of my Verizon contract drew the more research I've done.  I've searched online, on Verizon's website, talked to family, friends and total strangers.  The more I research the more confused I become. Please allow me to think and wonder outloud in what follows.  Perhaps someone here can help?
Do I want an iphone ... or a Droid ... or the Thunderbolt?  While I have read hundreds of online articles and posts about all of them I remain confused.
My sister insists I will love the iphone.  At home I spend virtually all my free time on my computer.  I am, I admit, a computer addict.  But all of my computers have been PCs.  I know nothing about - nor do I want to learn - about Apple.  My sister's son is a Mac fan and I am sure he teaches his parents about their iphones.  Will I have a problem learning the iphone?  Do I have to have an itunes account just to activate my iphone?
On the surface the Droid looks more appealing to me.  But I know nothing about it.  And I've read a lot of posts here pooping the Android.
Since I live in a 4G area and Verizon seems to be pushing the Thunderbolt, I've taken a look at it.  How does it compare to the iphone or the Droid?  I've read many negative posts on these boards about the 4G network.  (I do take all message board posts with a grain of salt.)  But, I wonder, why would Verizon introduce their 4G network yet offer only ONE phone which works on it?  And, I wonder, will there be an iphone 5 this summer which is 4G? ... should I put off my decision to upgrade until this summer -- or is the introduction of the iphone 5, whenever it may happen, only going to add to my confusion?
Unlimited data plans: I was told (by some source I cannot recall) that an unlimited data plan is $30/month for the 3G network and $50/month for the 4G.  Both reviewing Verizon's website and speaking on the phone with a Verizon representative I am lead to belive the cost is $30 for either unlimited 3G or 4G.  True?  I would/will pay an increase to my bill of $30/month for unlimited data but not $50.  What is the truth about Verizon's 3G vs 4G network?
Lastly: maybe I'm to sensetive.  Maybe I expect too much.  I've been a Verizon customer for ten years.  As my 2 year contract neared it's expiration I truly expected Verizon to send me some email or snail-mail which both thanked me for being a customer and offered me an incentive to continue my service with them.  I have received not one word.  I realize I am one small minnow in a vast sea ... but don't we small minnows make up Verizon's vast sea?
I do hope that at least some of my confusions will be addressed, understood, and answered by you nice folks who monitor these boards.  Please, no techno-babble.  I've read the pcworld and cnet articles.  And I've read many verizon community messages.  If you reply, please do so using simple terms.  I am so easily confused!
    Thanks!

Thank you, both, for your easy to understand replies.  Please allow me to ask (thinking out loud) a few more questions.
Against my family's urgings, I've pretty much decided against the iphone.  If I'm going to take the leap from my old, trusty flip phone into this decade's smart phone I want to jump in full-throttle and get a 4G device.  So, first, a few questions about them....
The two that perk my interest -- and which I've been comparing online -- are the Thunderbolt and the DROID Bionic.  The latter I cannot find on Verizon's website.  Has it not been released yet?  They both seem to compare similarly.  Are there any (notable) differences between the two?
Understanding that new technology (4G -- and the devices which go with it) can be problematic, is one better to wait a few months until "bugs" are worked out -- or is there really no reason to wait?  (I realize that before I can post this message "today's" technology is already outdated!)
Whether rightly or wrongly, I continue to think of a "smart phone" as my Windows based computer: when an upgrade or "fix" is available I download and install a Microsoft update and it's "fixed."  Is the same true with a phone -- that a "fix" is available via a simple software download ... or do some "problems" require a whole new phone?
I was, mistakenly, under the impression Verizon's unlimited data plan was $30 on the 3G network and $50 on the 4G.  I have been corrected and understand it is $30 on both/either.  But I note other carriers charge up to $80!  Question is, is Verizon apt to raise their price in the near future?  Is there any reason to be in a rush to lock in a $30/month unlimited data plan?
Being a miser, I continue to look for the best deal.  As I mentioned in my original post, when the expiration of my current Verizon contract expiration date neared I expected to receive some promotional offers/deals.  I have received none.  My sister (pre-ordered) an iphone -- and received a $100 credit off the price of $199.  When I telephoned Verizon the representative stated she had never heard of any discounts on any phones to anyone!
Another example.... When going to Verizonwireless.com I am offered a price of $250 for the Thunderbolt (with, of course, a 2 year contract).  But when going to another, "outside," company they offer it for $200.  Why?  Specifically, why doesn't Verizon seem to offer the BEST deals/prices to their existing, long-time customers?  I really don't get it.  I have been with Verizon for ten years.  I am going to upgrade to a smartphone (which means my monthly bill will increase by at least $30), and I will probably remain a Verizon customer for life.  So, is it unreasonable to think I might hope for some kind of "deal" that I know others have received?  If not, where do I look for -- and find -- them?
Lastly, is there an option on Verizon's forums to notify me of replies via email?
Thanks again, in advance, for your input.
BTW, how can "iphone," "4G," or "DROID" not be in Verizon's spell checker?!?

  • Which apps allow to make free call from outside US to US Cellphone without data plan?

    Hi Everyone,
I am using Iphone 4 and I live in India.
I have few friends in USA and I want to make a call to them.
The problem is that they do not have any smartphone so I can't use any peer to peer system or Apps like Skype, Fringe, Viber etc etc.
I am looking for the names of an Apps which i can use to call from India to USA but In USA my friend don't have smartphone so I can be able to make a call on cellphone in USA without any data plan.
Please give me the names of those kind of Apps...
    Thanks in Advance..
    Thanks
    Hemu7310

Assuming you have an Internet connection of some sort from your iPhone, you should be able to use any Voice-Over-IP service, such as the ones you mention. Skype, at least, allows calls to standard telephones, but such calls are not free. You will need to consult the services' pricing to know what it will cost.
    Regards.

  • Can I Activate New Phone Without Changing Plan? Smart phone to Smart Phone

I have a Droid Incredible and while I am waiting for some new Windows Phones to come out next year, I thought I would try a Trophy for a while. Im eligible for a discount May of next year.
I was going to get an HTC Trophy off of Ebay and use it instead of my Incredible while I wait for better Windows phones. Is this as simple as calling and activating the Trophy when I receive it and no longer using my Incredible?  Ive had the unlimited data plan since I first got the Incredible a year and a half ago. So I would expect nothing should change with my plan and this should be straight forward.
Am I correct in this or is Verizon going to give me problems and make me change my contract?

I would like to upgrade my son's phone, but I don't want to pay for a smart phone and a data package. All of the "basic" phones that Verizon offers now have terrible ratings (and not to mention that there aren't very many phone choices.)  I have an older blackberry, and I was thinking about letting him have that for a while and transfer the number over. Will I have to get a data plan if I give him my old blackberry?

  • Push without data plan

Does the push email work if you do not have a data plan?

Looks like you need a cellular data plan in order for "push" to work on the iPhone. I have tried both mobileMe and Yahoo push mail when on only a WiFi connection(in Airplane mode or in an area without coverage).. Looks like the iPhones push features don't work without a cellular connection

  • Q10 BBM works in wifi without data plan

    Hi there,
Planning to buy a BB Q10.. i heard some news that Blackberry Q10 BBM works in wifi even without dataplan? please confirmed.. Thank you

YES, normally the new devices are fully functional on WI-FI.
Of course a data plan provides you with more mobility... but not more functionalities.
Please don't forget to mark as "solved" if your question is replied and to "like" a useful reply to your post ;-)

  • Push notifications without data plan.

    Hi all.
I have an original iPhone (2g EDGE) running OS 3.0.1.
Currently I am on an O2 contract, in which data is charged by the MB.
As such, I have replaced the APN settings with garbage text, and rely on wifi for my data needs.
And here lies the problem. Whenever I turn Push Notifications on, I hear constant feedback in my speakers, as though the phone is trying to contact the push server via edge, failing due to the garbage APN, and constantly retrying. Even on wifi, this occurs, causing the phone to get hot and draining the battery in a matter of 3-4 hours.
Throughout all this, as I can't use the data and phone connection at the same time, I cannot receive any calls or texts while the Push Notifications are in overdrive.
If I turn off Push Notifications and rebooting the iPhone, the problems go away.
Re-entering the correct APN settings, Push works fine over the Edge connection.
My question is this: is there any way to make push work only over Wifi, like iPod Touches, which have no data connection.
If not, is this a bug, and will it be patched/fixed soon?
I'm liking the Push Notifications, but find myself unable to use them as of now.
    Please help.
    Brand

When WiFi is actively connected, it replaces cell network data connections (GPRS, Edge or 3G) and push notifications are transmitted only via WiFI, as is ALL data - Edge is inactive by default. If turning on push notifications is causing your phone to "feedback" and overheat, there is a problem in your phone. There may be firewall issues blocking port 5223. This isn't being helped by the altered APN setting, See this support article:
