Touch Up Text Tool

Hi,
I ran OCR on a document and wante to play with the touch up text tool.  The issue is, I don't know how to view how acrobat has interpreted the words, so how can I figure out what it has got wrong or right without converting to word etc first.  I can type touch up text, but its as if I'm using white font and I can only see what I've typed after I put it into word.
On a separate note, how can I get Acrobat to recognise tables so that it can display these tables in a word export?
Thanks

Hi,
Last first. Tables - OCR provides a "best-estimate" character output of what it 'sees' of the discrete image of the text characters.
It does not interpret format and layout.
Higher end applications ($$) provide additional functionality that may output a reasonable "best-guess" of layout/format (of which tables are a subset).
However, the OCR provided with Acrobat only does the character image recognition.
Acrobat's OCR output is dictated by which of the three modes you use.
These are Searchable Image, Searchable Image (Exact), or ClearScan.
The first two provide a layer of "hidden text".
Use Examine Document to view this Hidden Text.
There is no practicable way to edit this hidden text in a PDF (keyword is "practicable").
However, you could try selecting PDF page content (a page at a time) and, via TouchUp Text tool's context menu go the Properties of the selected text.
In the Text tab, change selected hidden text to a font installed on the local machine. This may be sufficent to support what you want to do.
ClearScan output is where you can work "suspects".
Selecting each PDF page's content in turn, you can use the TouchUp Text Tool to get into the properties of the selected text and change the font to something available on the local machine.
To edit ClearScan post Suspect cleanup you will need to do this.
ClearScan output is an Adobe font created specifically for ClearScan.
Be well...

  • Touch-up Text Tool and Fonts

We are on Windows 7, Office 2007 and Acrobat 9.  We have recently discovered that when you pdf a Word document, open within Acrobat, then try to use the Touch-Up Text Tool, it changes the kerning/character spacing of the text upon saving.  The only fix we have found for this is within Word, choose Acrobat Preferences, under Advanced Settings, click on Fonts, and REMOVE the fonts from "Never Embed Fonts" pane.  You need to ensure that any font that is in the Word document is removed from this area.  This seems odd to me.  Can anyone enlighten me on this?  See below screen shots of text spacing changes as well as Font Menu.

It is a good practice to embed fonts if Touch Up Text is a tool you often use.
Is the person creating the pdf the person who is editing the created pdf? If not, my guess based on the exclusion list in your post is that the users have different versions of the Arial font installed. There are small, but significant, differences in kerning and line height between different Arial versions.

  • Possible to modify blocks of text as defined by Touch Up Text tool?

I have scanned a document and OCRed it. Using the Touch Up Text Tool, I can approach the text, but the text areas are not as defined by the tool. Is there a way to modify a block as defined? I.e. There is a heading over 2 columns of text. The OCR process defined this as one block of text.

Thank you very much for your input.
I'm trying to automate this process as much as possible because I don't want to have to crunch the data manually myself later on, instead just teach someone else how to do it.
The first search and replace action seems basic enough but regarding the second one I would have to manually assign that paragraph style to the line where the data would break because one can only assign character styles in nested styles, right?
Also I've heard that ID CS5 automatically creates new pages based on a template when you paste information inside the first page, is that so? That would be great because that way the person wouldn't have to manually create pages and link the contents throughout the document but instead simply open my template and paste the information within the first master page. That's not possible with CS4, is it?
    Thank you very much!

  • Scanned pdf - touch up text tool - upside down text

Have a few pdfs created with Acrobat, scanned with a Canon 7080.
When opening the pdfs and using the Touch Up text tool to add text, the text is upside down.
    The pdf is oriented correctly.
It does the same on a few other machines so it seems to be something specific the documents.
Most other pdf files are fine.
I have printed to pdf and it fixes the problem (added text is right side up) but I'd like to know how it got messed up to begin with.
    Any ideas?
    TIA

Sounds like you used the searchable text form of OCR. Thus the text is hidden and that is what is happening. To see the text, you would want to use the ClearScan form of OCR. At this point I don't have any good suggestions. A lot depends on what you are trying to do. In any case, trying to do major editing to a PDF with the text touchup tool is not recommended. Not the name of the tool is touchup, not retype. The method you are using will not make any change to the appearance, only to the hidden text.

  • Now unable to use Touch Up Text Tool

Since 2007, I've used a mac laptop for creating invoices in Quickbooks and saved them as pdfs. They are saved to my 2009 IMac as acrobat (9.4.1. version) pdfs. Over the years I have, on occasion, made minor edits using the edit text tool.
Beginning yesterday, I am no longer able to use the text edit feature (system font not available?!?). See attached. It appears fine.
When I go into properties it say font not available
Can someone offer some guidance? Happy New Year!

  • Adobe 9 Pro Touch Up Text Tool - Horrible!!!

I have to say, for what the cost of Adobe Acrobat is, you would think that they would have a better text editing tool available within the software.  It's clunky and not very user friendly.  There has to be a better way to edit text, other than exporting it to Word, editing and back to pdf...

As a noob, I do have a question regarding the best way to maintain PDF Forms.  I have the original Word document and then I create the PDF and manually add all of the form fields.  If I have to make a change to the Word document do I then have to start over with adding all of the form fields?
Is there a way to put field tags in my word document that so that when I create the PDF file those fields are automatically created?
It seems like a maintenance nightmare to have to recreate all of the form fields each time I make revisions to the master Word document.
    What am I missing?
    Thanks, Stu

  • Installed New Fonts: Still cannot edit with Touch-up Text Tool

I purchased the fonts I was looking for, installed them, re-booted everything, and I still get the following error message when I try to edit the text.
HELP!  Even checked distiller and it's pointing to the correct file.

It is also possible that you bought fonts that are not licensed for embedding. In such a case Acrobat will refuse to embed them. Why not just ask the author for a copy of the original file. It is better to edit an original file anyway and not a PDF.

What can I do that would allow me to edit inside this doc?

Thanks! I installed the font and I can edit in the document!
I thought about doing this, but it seemed too simple. LOL
For those that this isn't working for...I used this guide to install the font:
    Windows XP
    Double-click on “My      Computer.”
Under “Other Places,” click      on “Control Panel.”
If you are using the Classic      View, click on “Fonts.”
(If you are using the Category view, click on “Appearance and Themes.” Under      “See Also” on the left-hand side of the screen, click on “Fonts.”)
In the Fonts window, select      the File menu, and choose “Install New Font.”
Navigate to the folder that      contains the fonts you want to install.
OpenType fonts purchased online from Adobe will be in the location you      decompressed them to.
Select the fonts you want to      install. You can click to select one font, Control-click to select several      fonts, or Shift-click to select a contiguous group of fonts.
Press the “OK” button to      install the fonts.
Close the Fonts control      panel when you are finished.
The fonts are now installed and will appear in the font menus of your      applications.

  • Typewriter and Touch Up Text Functions

Wow! I am so impressed with the politeness of the people who address the different issues that users are having! How refreshing and way to go! Here are my issues (Mac 10.4.11, Acrobat Professional 8.1.2):
    1. I work in an architectural office; contractors e-mail RFIs (Request For Information) to us in pdf format, which are downloaded into the client file. I first tried entering the reply using the Typewriter function. I can see the typing on my screen, but when I print, there is no typing. Also, if I save the file and e-mail it to the client - and my boss - the typing has disappeared, but the original file on my computer still shows the typing. Any ideas?
    2. We then tried using the Touch Up Text Tool for entering the replies, which seems to work pretty well, except that we are unable to change the Font in the Text Properties after the text has been entered. Do I understand correctly from the other user replies that this is a known issue with no resolution? Or does someone have a work-around? Also, My boss is unable to go back in edit the text on his computer after he has clicked out of the text box; he's using Leopard. Thanks so much for your help!

    Sherry:
You are somewhat limited to editing text within Acrobat; For advanced editing of text you would need a plug-in like Pitstop.
According to the Acrobat Help file:
You can add or replace text only if the font used for that text is installed on your system. If the font isnt installed on your system but is embedded or subsetted in the PDF, you can make changes only to color, word spacing, character spacing, baseline offset, or font size.
You can edit text on rotated lines in the same way as on horizontal lines, and you can edit text using vertical fonts in the same way as text using horizontal fonts. The baseline offset or shift for vertical fonts is left and right, instead of up and down for horizontal fonts.
    To Edit Text Attributes:
    Select the TouchUp Text tool.
Click in the text you want to edit.
Right-click/Control-click the text, and choose Properties.
In the TouchUp Properties dialog box, click the Text tab.

  • Touch up text acrobat 9

    Howdy,
I have a pdf printed from illustrator. I want to be able to use the touch up text tool to change text in the pdf. I have tried to embed the entire font in the PDF, but keep getting it reported (preflight) as a subset (but thats not the main issue). When I try to use the touch up text tool, I get told the the font is not available and on inspection acrobat is reporting the font name differently to the actual font name in the system (Fujiyama plain as opposed to just plain Fujiyama!)
When I make the edit, and choose properties it tels me that the font can be embeded so I save the document, which now contains both fujiyama plain and fujiyama. HOWEVER, when I dig into the preflight I find that Fujiyama has decendant fonts (whatever that means)and at the bottom of the tree there is "list of CID's missing in CIDset of embedded CID font". And the 2 additional chracters that I just added to the PDF are the ones that are missing.
In other words, I make an edit with the touch up text tool, it embeds the font for me (nice) and then EXCLUDES the 2 characters that its just embeded. ANyone know what gives?

Do you have text, or a picture of text? If you take the tool over text it should change to an Ibar. If you hold down the ctrl key and place the cursor, you should get an Ibar waiting for you to enter text at that location. If it is simply a graphic, you will only get an arrow.

  • Does JavaScript do Touch up Text?

    Hi,
I'm a newbie in JavaScript. I have a requirement to find a string and replace with another string in a pdf file. I can use Touch up Text tool to update the text. However, as I need to do this "find and replace" action number of times, I thought of using JavaScript. I want to know if JavaScript can replace the text in a pdf file. Could you let me know of any other alternatives, if JavaScript can't touch up the text in PDF? One alternative I have in my mind is hiding the old text through annotation and overwriting with the new text, using JavaScript. I'm not sure, if it's possible, though. Can I get a small program to do one of these two alternatives?
    Thank you very much.
    Hemanth

No, it can't replace the text. You need a plugin or an external application
    to do that.
You can, however, remove the old text by redacting it, for example, or with
a form field, and then place a text box on top with the new text, but if the
length of the new text is different to that of the old text it might look a
    bit strange.

  • TouchUp Text Tool not working?

I have Max OS X 10.4, Acrobat 8.1.2 and cannot get the TouchUp Text Tool to work? Can select text and delete/copy/paste etc but cannot add/change/modify any text from the keyboard? All keyboard text keys not working or changing data?
Was using Acrobat 7 and it worked great, however this version is just not cooperating.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...
    Thanks,
    Ron

I talked to a very helpful person at Adobe Acrobat Tech support yesterday (Tony) and I *think* I have the problem resolved. [BTW, I don't see any definite mentions to this here: during this problem I was able to delete (using either of the delete keys) text and I was able to hit 'return' to get to a new line - while using the touch-up text tool. Also, I was able to create a new blank document and type in next fine too.]
After troubleshooting all the possible causes with Tech support (including manually trashing all the /user/library/preferences/acrobat (folder) and all the com.adobe.acrobat ..(8) preferences in the /user/library/preferences folder - and after reinstalling Acrobat 8 - the issue still wasn't fixed. I called back Tech Support and got the same person (Tony) and with him still on phone, I created a new user on my Mac -- recreated the text touch-up tool problem and Acrobat 8 worked just like it was supposed to do. -- so ... the problem was in my 'old' user account & probably a font problem.
Tony the Tech transfered me over to a Font Tech at Adobe (who was a rude, nasty s-o-b who barely spent 2 minutes with the problem, but that's IMHO) who told me the only resolution, since in his opinion I had a corrupted User account, was to trash my current User account on my system and start fresh -- no alternative! Since that wasn't acceptable to me, and since the Font Tech could or would not give me a straight answer about transferring fonts from my User/Library/Fonts to the computer (root, not system) /Library/Fonts and working on Acrobat that way .... or fixing any font problems in my current /user/fonts -- ..... I hung up the phone and resolved to track this down myself (with the help that was already given to me by Tony the Acrobat Tech.
The first thing I tried this morning was to see if the Acrobat 8 text touch-up 'bug' was still happening -- and it was.
So I spent the rest of this morning validating fonts and deleting duplicates -- (you know how those nasty duplicate fonts just appear even though you think you have them all removed a month or so ago). I also moved all my Adobe otf fonts over to my /Library/Fonts and deleted those same fonts from my /User/Library/Fonts.
I just fired up Acrobat 8 and tried the text touch-up tool --- and it works fine! No problem at all.
Final answer (at least for me) is --> validate all your fonts. I used Font Book (Mac OS) to do this. Delete any major errors on fonts you can live without. Some of the warnings you get (on the critical errors and caution warning both are confusing: 'name' table warning, for example. I did find an Apple Developer document that explains (to a small degree) what these mean: http://developer.apple.com/textfonts/TTRefMan/index.html
Definitely delete every duplicate font you find. I kept some non-duplicated fonts with minor warnings, but these fonts wouldn't be used in Acrobat anyway.
I don't know if moving the Adobe otf fonts to my root /Library/Fonts helped or not since I didn't do a test of this prior to any validation on my user/font file. It was just one step in my bug fix.
Let me know if this works for you all too.

  • Alt-text 'tool tip' not appearing on some images

We get pdf files created by outside sources that we then need to publish on our webpage.  I add tags to the pdf, then add the alt-text to the images via the Touch Up Text tool.  As well as I can determine, the tag for the alt-text is present in the pdf.  The Read Out Loud function in Acrobat reads the alt-text correctly as does a screen reader.  But the 'tool tip' does not appear on all images.  It seems that the more complex, mulitple layered dwg type images do not display the text, either from the browser, or from Acrobat itself.  Other dwg source images do work, and photgraphic images are ok.
I have gone back through the pdfs to verify the existence of the figure tag, and that the alt-text is there.
I have opened the tags dialog, looked at the properties, and added the text to the Title field as well as the alt-text and Actual Text.
I have converted the images to jpgs, which resolves the issue, but greatly reduces the quality of the image.
I am using Acrobat Pro 8.1.4 on a Windows XP, sp2 system.
I am aware that the ADA requirement do not require the 'tool-tip' to function, but when you have many, many pages of images in a pdf using a screen reader or the read out loud function to test is not feasible for testing.  We need to have the tool-tip working, and I have run out of ideas on how to make it work.

I just figured out that those photos had been set to a blending mode of Multiply
because an earlier iteration of the design used transparency. But to the eye, they
look like normal photos, so I didn't realize they were set to Multiply.
This solved the problem but it's not heartening news. What if my graphic legitimately
did have a blending mode set? What would my workaround be if I needed to set Alt Text
    for those images?

I have just updated Photoshop CC to 2014.2.0 -- 20140926.r.236 x64 release. Now I am experiencing an issue when I use the text tool to just type a few words on a new document or layer. There it's help there.  I've not totally solved my problem but others seemed to have.

  • Photoshop CS3 crashes when I try to use text tool

I recently upgraded from Photoshop CS3 after upgrading to Leopard on my Mac. Everything has been fine until today when I tried to use the text tool and it crashed the program. I've since tried using the text tool repeatedly and it consistently crashes. It doesn't crash immediately after I select the text tool, but only a few seconds after. Has anyone else had this problem? I tried searching and couldn't find anything.

FontAgent Pro can be directed to any folder on the computer to load the fonts that are contained there and will then manage them.
That said, I removed just about all of the fonts a long time ago from Macintosh HD/Library / Application Support/ Adobe /Fonts / Reqrd/ Base
except for the few basics which certain Adobe programs must have available (like Myriad).
More recently, Adobe installs its fonts in a different folder: Macintosh HD/Library/Fonts.
If you don't want that lot showing up in Photoshop's font menu, either remove them from that folder or put that folder under FAP's control.
The other fonts that I never use, and which clutter Adobe's font menus, are a bunch of Asian fonts.
They are installed in System/Library/Fonts (which is an area that we are advised never to touch) but I removed the Asian fonts from there and there have been no repercussions so far!
