Touch vs. sleek vs. micro, remotes, FM transmitt

I read most of the user opinion thread on the MP3 players but im still undecided which I want. Maybe im spoiled by my sony mini disc player, but I dont want to put hours of time into downloading music and $200 into a player to have it die in a month, or a couple, I want something that'll last for years without trouble. Do anyone ever have one that lasts this long?
I'd like to pick one of them up this weekend and walmart has all 3 in stock. The sleek is $240, the touch is clearance at $80, and the micro is $220. I just use my remote with my mini disc so i'd prefer to use a remote with whichever I get. This remote says it'll work with the micro, but can it work with the sleek and touch or are there ones for those 2?
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3622659#Item+Description
And I also want to play it in my car, which doesnt have a tape deck so I have to use a FM transmitter. The decent price ones (sub $50) have ranges of around 5Hz to 8Khz...not exactly what im hoping for. Do they really sound that bad through a FM transmitter? I've got good hearing and can tell when crap is missing, which is why i'd be putting everything on at 320kpbs if I could...
And as to which one, the "brick" touch isnt that big really, and $60 less then the sleek is a big difference, plus its a longer battery. Do you guys ever have trouble reading the screen? The sleek definitely has a nicer screen. The micro is tiny but I think the 8gb wouldnt be enough for my library...any reasons its sooo much better then the other 2?
thanks,
Jeremy

Jeremy,
That remote will only work with the zen micro and zen sleek. The zen touch player uses another type of remote.
You can checkout this link and see the type of player the remote support.

No, it does not come with Remote and Mic, but it will come with the new design. (dosen't say on tech specs)

  • My 4th gen iPod touch won't recognize the remote feature on earbuds other than Apple earpods - anyone else had this issue?

Apple earpods don't fit my ears well, so I bought a pair of Sony earbuds a few months ago. When they came, I noted that I could turn volume up and down, but the remote portion didn't work - couldn't pause or skip music. They weren't the highest quality so I assumed it was a fluke.
I just got a new pair of earbuds and same issue! The volume works but the remote does nothing. I tried to use my boyfriend's Apple earpods with my touch and the remote works fine. Also, the new earbuds I got work, remote and all, on his 4th gen Nano.
I can't seem to find anything online about why these earbuds that are supposed to be compatible wouldn't be working. I've cleaned out the audio jack so it's not a lint issue, plus it really does work just fine with Apple earpods, only alternatives don't work. And again, I can hear fine and the volume can be controlled but the remote to pause and play and skip isn't recognized at all.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

So just in case anyone else ever runs into this...
I solved the issue and it was that between the plug of the new earbuds being slightly thicker than the Apple earpods, and the width of the case that I was using for my iPod, there wasn't a connection being made to activate the remote function.
I took off the case and now the earbuds work exactly as they should!

  • Is the Zen Touch 2 compatible with micro SDHC?

    Hi,
The specifications page on the creative website showed that the Zen Touch 2 was compatible with micro SD cards, but now I'm wondering if it's compatible with the micro SDHC?
    In advance thanks,

    Hi.
I know this was posted some time ago... But I thought I would add the page where Creative tells us which micro sdhc cards (and card class) they would like us to use:

  • Zen Micro remote quest

I've been looking at players and liked the Micro and Neeon,as it seems the Neeon's been phased out in favour of it the Micro seems the one for me.
My main requirements that most players seem not the feature were a remote so I don't have to keep fishing the thing out and really would have prefered a player with Flac or other lossless support, but I guess mp3 will have to do.
The question I have is regarding the remote,I was happy when I finally discovered it has one as an optional extra and that closed the deal but I have one question.
On the Cnet review for it , http://computershopper.com.com/Creative_Zen_Micro_5GB/4505-6490_7-35927-3.html?tag=nav
    they claim
"Everything that comes in the box (plus the optional wired remote) matches."
The picture also shows a much cooler looking remote than the one in the shop, that I take it has the same colour as the player you choose.
    Are they not available?

The wired remotes for the Zen Micro are not available in the same full range of colours that the player is, but you can get it in black and white. You didn't mention what region you're in, but here are a few links:
US online store (they have it available in Black/Black, Black/White and White/White)
European online store (available in Black or White)

  • Zen Micro Remote Prob

I have now owned two remotes, one which I returned and another I just bought off eBay, and neither have worked on my Zen Micro. I can hear sound through earphones when I plug them into the headphone jack but pressing he buttons on the remote does nothing. I can't skip tracks or pause the music. The remote is not on hold, is there anything else i could try?

Well, Ebay could mean a few things. Was it a store on Ebay or a private seller? You might need to contact the seller to see if they can provide you with a (proper) receipt, that shows what you purchased and when you purchased it. If you bought it in November then you should still be within the 90 day (full) warranty. You do normally need a receipt to prove the original purchase and date.
Contact Customer Support anyway to see what they advise, and it wouldn't hurt to e-mail the seller to see if he/she can give you a receipt.

  • IMac won't wake with touch of mouse or allow remote connection when sleeping

My iMac will not wake with just the touch of the mouse any longer now that I have Mavericks. It did with Snow Leopard, but not with Mavericks. Now I have to hit a key on the keyboard or hit the mouse.
Also, when the computer does wake now, it take a while for the internet to connect again, the clock to update and my email to come into Outlook. When the mail does come in, the receipt time is wrong, of course.
In addition, I used to be able to connect from my windows laptop to the iMac through Filezilla even when the iMac was sleeping. I cannot do this with Mavericks. I have to physically go to the iMac and wake it up and then I can connect to it remotely. Kinda ruins the whole point.
I’ve made sure “Wake for network access” is checked in System Preferences > Energy Saver and I’ve made sure “Wake on Wireless: Supported” in there in System Information when accessed by Option + Apple icon.
How can I get my computer back to where it was- waking with only a touch of the mouse (not pressing keys) and accessing it remotely while sleeping?
I’m not a computer expert, obviously, so please explain any acronyms or jargon you might use when answering.
Thank you in advance for your help!

Thank you for your swift suggestion! I think it has worked I will monitor it for a couple of days

  • Micro remote just does not wo

I have a zen micro ( latest firmware - play for sure or whatever they call it :-) )
I have tried 2 of the wired remotes on the payer, first one would just not work at all, could hear sound ok but buttons were not doing anything. Made the mistake of phoning creative in Ireland who told me to install the latest play for sure firmware/software and that should fix it. I reluctantly did so, not expecting a result - guess what - absolutely no difference ( except I now have the software version I did NOT want ) !
Anyway...sent the remote back as faulty, and bought another one from elsewhere, and to my annoyance, have the exact same problem - no buttons work at all. Yes I have checked that the lock is not on either the player or remote, plug is inserted correctly, have tried a "cold start", but nothing.
Am I missing something here....or have I had 2 duff remotes - unlikely I would have thought. HELP.

    timmackey wrote:
As I said in original post BOTH lock buttons were not "on"
Ah apologies, I must have had a brain spasm and just saw the player lock being checked.
Anyhow.... It seems I have now sorted it, no thanks to Creative who havent even replied.
You'd need to give Creative a day or two to reply by email, and you must reply to the first autoresponse email they send (which is explained within that).
I formatted the zen, loaded an older version of firmware ( ver ..0 ) and removed ALL software relating to Zen from my PC. Reloaded just the basics from the original CD ( drivers and "organiser" ) and it now works. Thanks Creative for the original information which was completely wrong. I shall not buy Creative again as I think their web help sucks, and their site is hard to navigate and understand. Far too many confusing options, with little or no description of what they actually are / do. I am an experienced PC user, and very web wise, but they are crap at support.
Firmware will have been the only thing to fix it. Reinstalling the PC would make no difference.
Personally I find their download site very straightforward, and I've not seen anyone else have problems with it.

  • Zen Touch FM radio attachm

I am thinking of buying the Fm radio attachment for the ZenTouch but am worried in case it has the same poor quality reception as the one built into the Zen Micro. I briefly owned the micro but was dissappointed by the quality of fm reception on it so swapped it for a Touch.
Can any one tell me what the reception/quality of this attachment is like?
    I li've in the UK.

The Touch and Sleek use different remotes. For the Touch the radio is part of the remote, whereas with the Sleek it's built-in to the player.
Check your regional Creative Online Store for the remote and price.

  • Purchasing help, por favore - Sleek vs. Touch [Xtr

Alright all you Zen-aholis or whateva, if you can I'd like to ask your help on my mp3 player decision. After looking extensi'vely online, I've basically decided on one of creative's products over the competition, but I can't decide which >_<. As far as looks go, I am most attracted to the sleek (except for the lack of color options yet...). It's actually about the same price as the compariti've Ipod 20gb color, but the sleek's got the mass storage and wma support the ipod (as far as I know) doesn't, and that bodes well ^_^. Unforunately, I am dissapointed in the lack of battery-swapping options compared to the micro, but I don't care about half the size for a fourth of the hd space . So, on that note, is the touch worth it over the sleek for the extended battery life? And, what exactly are the main differences between touch and sleek besides screen size, layout, & battery life? And finally, what's up w/the Xtra? I can hardly find much information on it on the net other than some person sayin it doesn't deli'ver on it's external hd promise (does it even have one?). That's my decision, basically. I just want a good mp3 for the best price possible, most hd space possible (want to be able to use it as mass storage, as well), and as little converting as possible - in that order. A color screen is cool too, but it just usually seems to add extra $$$ on the price tag.
p.s. This is basically gonna be my "Christmas purchase". Just gonna ask for some $ and get it meself. I'm assuming there isn't any crazy stuff down the pipeline that would make it worth it to wait for end o' summer approx next year, tho? ~_-Message Edited by amodman on -05-2005 08:9 AM

Depends on the nature of your OS and mass-storage needs. Neither player works like a full-fledged mass storage (MSC or UMS) MP3 player; but it's sort of a multiple-choice question.
There are three ways to put data on the player: Removable-disk mode, music mode with Creative drivers, or music mode with MTP (aka PlaysForSure Subscription). Which one to use depends on your player and OS:
Removable-disk mode is only on the Micro and its derivati'ves (which includes the Sleek, but not the Touch). It comes closest to your data needs; you set up a data partition on the player, and when in this mode the partition is readable as a MSC dri've by any PC with WinXP/2000/Me (without drivers) or 98SE (with commonly-available MSC drivers). If this is what you want, definitely get the Sleek (unless you're outside Europe and don't have WinXP SP or 2 and WMP 0 on your main PC); the Touch doesn't have this.</LI>
Music mode with Creative drivers will work as far back as Win98SE, but requires Creative drivers as well as software (for the Touch, NOMAD Explorer). On systems with the drivers and software installed, you can drag-and-drop files to the icon provided in Windows Explorer or My Computer, and place them in the music partition (the only one for the Touch, not the removable-disk partition for the Sleek); however, it's not a full-fledged disk. If this works for you, you probably want the Touch; except for European models, the Sleek only works with MTP (next item). Warning: If you li've outside Europe and do not have WinXP SP or 2 and WMP 0 on your main PC, the Touch in this mode is likely your only option.</LI>
Music mode with MTP works a lot like the Creative-drivers option, but has these differences: (a) You must have WinXP SP or 2 and WMP 0 to access the music partition; (b) no other drivers or software are necessary--an "MTP icon" will appear in Windows Explorer or My Computer (but Creative software sometimes works better); and (c) it's required for use with "to go" subscription services (Napster To Go, Yahoo! Music Unlimited To Go, etc.). If this is what you want, either will work, but the Sleek will likely be better for you due to its removable-disk option, especially if you're outside Europe where the Sleek supports MTP out-of-the-box. (Touches and European Sleeks require a firmware upgrade.)</LI>
If this thoroughly confused you, just reply with (a) what OS is on the systems you want to use it with, and (b) whether you can li've with Explorer drag-and-drop file support or need full-fledged disk access.

(((thnxs, sorry by my english, i'm spanish)))

I'm guessing the size of the player is pretty critical, hence it's not suitable. I'm not aware of anything similar for the Micro, but I guess it's possible there is something.

  • The Zen Micro wired remote: Many raves, two small ra

Just got my eagerly-anticipated white Zen Micro remote!! Here's my two cents:
    Pros:
. Nice look that matches the design of the unit itself very well.
    2. Definitely makes life easier in terms of controlling the unit while staying acti've.
    3. Minimalist with all of the important functions built into a small, elegant design.
    4. I like that there's a button to quickly switch between mp3 and radio modes.
    5. I like that the play button, when held down, functions as an on/off switch.
    Cons:
. The clip is well-designed from the perspecti've that it's not likely to slip off after it's on. Unfortunately, it should have been a teeny bit wider because it doesn't work on anything but the thinnest cloth, which is especially tragic since this novel design would have let Creative make it as wide as they want without hurting its effecti'veness!
    2. Why did I have to figure out for MYSELF that the play button doubles as an on/off switch? The documentation (or lack thereof): the remote only includes a little diagram with a button legend. Said legend doesn't really say anything about the buttons except the obvious. Hmmm, I wonder what the "mode" button does, since on the actual device "play mode" lets me go from regular play to shuffle to repeat etc.... let's consult the manual. Ummm yep it seems that the "mode" button does... modes. Great.
These two rants -- which in no way are recommendations not to buy the remote -- are indicators of the same feeling that possessed me when I wrote my previous rants about the Zen Micro itself -- deep, intense, frustration. Frustration at what appears to be a trend with Creative: <i>a non-user-oriented mindset</i>. The kind of mindset that thinks, "why bother with the kind of details that won't actually prevent anyone from buying the device?" Like, who would care about a crappy manual for a $20 remote? I mean, we'll all figure out how it works in no time, right? I mean, in the worst case, the hidden on/off function will be like a cool Easter egg waiting to be found.
    - sigh -
I realize these small rants constitute the large majority of my post but guess what? It's a remote. It works. There isn't too much else to say about it. Or, at least, that's how it <i>should</i> be.

I didn't know that about the play/pause button or the mode button. When I pushed play/pause it just paused and when I pushed mode it went to FM. I assumed that is all they did, lol! For me the clip is of little consequence because it is almost allways in my pocket or bag and I operate it by feel. Perhaps they figured that everyone li'ves in a warm climate and wears thin clothing? You are so right in saying the instruction manual is something less than stellar. I am not sure why they even bothered to waste the paper and ink! Come to think of it, the Micro's documentation led something to be desired too. Thanks for the tips!!!

  • IPod Touch & FM Transmitter Problems

    Hi -
I recently bought a Griffin iTrip Auto FM Radio Smartscan Transmitter. I have an iPod touch 2nd Gen. I plugged the transmitter in and set the radio station to a blank one, but no audio plays out of my car speakers. On my iPod it shows that audio is playing, but nothing can be heard. I have tried messing w/ volumes, but nothing works. I know it isn't the transmitter because I tried a Monster FM Transmitter as well with the same problem. I know that my iPod is compatible with both because it said so on the box. I tried to update iTunes to see if maybe I could update my iPod, but now my iTunes won't even update! Any ideas of how to solve the problem, whatever it may be?

Hmmm - I'm not sure. It's a plastic hard cover case. So it'll be difficult to cut. Below is a picture of the case:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tripe-Layer-Deluxe-Hybrid-Hard-Gel-Case-Cover-for-iPod-T ouch-5th-Generation-5G-5-/140904809291?pt=Other_MP3_Player_Accessories&hash=item 20ce94c34b
I'm worried that even after I cut that part out, the headphone jack might not be close enough to the exterior of the case to allow me to insert my FM Transmitter. This is because the FM Transmitter lies flat on the bottom side of the case and I'm not sure how much separation is allowed between it and the Ipod to still work (That little space difference might prevent it from working). But you're right - it's worth a shot. I'll give it a shot if I can't return/exchange the case. Thanks.

  • Remote to creative zen to

i see that my touch has a jack for wiered remote control, but on creative.com i dont find a remote for it, i find remote for sleek and micro ect. but not for touch, where can i get a remote for touch?

The remote for the Touch is also an FM radio tuner and voice recording unit, hence the proprietary connector.
With all the new players having these features built-in, I'm guessing there wasn't a lot of demand for the Touch remote.
