Touching up old black and white yearbook photos

Hi all! I've been tasked with scanning photos from an old high school yearbook and making the images look a bit better. They are obviously already printed and black and white and somewhat fuzzy. I looked online for some type of tutorial, but didn't find anything. Obviously my client doesn't expect a miracle, but if I could fix up the photos just a bit, that would be great. Any links to tutorials and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
julie

If you post a sample image from the Yearbook and make specific reference to what you would like enhanced perhaps we can offer more specific directions. For starters, without knowing the screen fineness of the printed halftones, there is little we can advise at this point other than to suggest that if you have not done the scans yet, scan the sample image once vertically and once angled at 30 degrees on the scanner and see whether there is a difference in results. Also, try more  than one scan ppi setting. Last, tell us your plan: final image size and use: web or print. Good luck.

I prefer to arrange my photos by title but when I shut down Iphoto, my photos rearrange by date.  This is not acceptable for my growing library of snanned black and white ancestral photos. How do I get photos in events to stay in place ?

I actually am illiterate on the use of the finder to to view photos in folders.  I guess I will go to a class at the local Apple store for a lesson on the uses of finder .
My method of viewing my photos are through events in I photo.
    1. Download  from camera or scan  in from old photos.
2  I organize photos into events by occasion, or happenings in a certain year, or a group of photos with memorabilia of a certain person from childhood and on. etc.
    3.  Because Iphoto does not allow rearranging as I was able to do in my old PC with Corell,  I drag all of the photos to an " album" on the left side of sceen.
    4.  I arrange photos in "order" after which I number each photo in sequence. I do this for a few of reasons.
              - if a photo is accidentally deleted I know it.  I can usually remedy this by checking my trash or
    rescanning.
              - I can sort by title without complications and this holds in "album"
    5.  The pictures will re arrange automatially to match the album in I photo.
    6.  This worked great in I-photo 09 but now in mountain lion the pictures in events go back to "
sort by date" and will not hold "sort to Title"each time I photo is closed down.  What a nuicance it is to have to go  to view and click "title"  again and again every time Iphoto is opened.
    7. Can I go back to Photo 09? .

  • "Old Black and White" filter does not play once rendered

    Hi,
If I apply the Old Black and White filter to a clip, the effected clip does not get played in the timeline. Instead, iMovie skips right past it and on to the clip immediately following the effected clip.
The effect does seem to be applied (the red progress bar moves along and it previews ok too), although the clip thumbnail is totally black instead of displaying the first frame of the modified clip. And, the clip object appears in the timeline (in both clip view and time view). iMovie just won't play it.
I've tried the effect on different clips in the timeline, same result. Also, I've exported the clip by itself, reimported it, and then applied the effect, same result. I can reproduce the problem on three workstations.
Has anyone heard of this problem?
    Thanks for your help,
    Glenn

    Hello Glenn and Karsten.
I was interested so I tested this on a couple of my videos using my G5 DP Mac and iMovie HD 3.0.3 (267.2)
Every rendered Old Black and White filtered clip I tried played properly, whether in time or clip view and whether full-screen or in the edit window. No problem here.
Glenn can replicate the issue on three workstations. Are these workstations all accessing the same server for iMovie HD?

After some troubleshooting, I decided to order a new battery.  I replaced the battery and was then able to get it to restore, however--after I restore it and it comes time to restart the phone, it gets stuck and doesn't turn on.
Sorry, your repair ruined the iPhone.
She does not have apple care and even though she loved this device, she isn't going to buy another iPhone because of all the problems shes had with this one (it's just over a year old).
After you ruined the iPhone with DIY, Apple won't touch it anymore. You should have asked before all these had happened.
I'm an android user myself and I love rooting/flashing new ROMS, so if jailbreaking her phone or doing some kind of super-restore with 3rd party programs might help, I'm all for it-

  • Importing OLD black and white videotape - please help!

    Hello!
I have imported many VHS tapes with a setup that includes iMovie HD '06 and a sony miniDV camera set to pass-through video. Quality of course limited by VHS tape source but problem importing a black and white VHS tape has me stumped. The black and white tape was actually dubbed years ago from reel-to-reel sony videotape, though I don't think that should matter:
Tape is a high-contrast outdoor scene and occasionally when less contrasted imported picture is watchable but mostly plagued by bands of light and dark. The really weird thing is that simultaneously with importing footage with the contrast bands the TV hooked up to the VCR shows a good, watchable picture! Something in the conversion must be astray - though same setup works fine for color (and in fact imports TV channel that VCR is set to when tape is not playing). I have a feeling that this is problem with some compensatory mechanism in camera that attempts to dampen the contrast and overcompensates - sort of like Macrovision works (my limited understanding of it, anyway!). Importantly, the picture on the camcorder shows the same artifacts. Anyone with any ideas? Would getting an S-Video player help (I couldn't find one a while back when I bought this VCR for dubbing purposes)? Any help appreciated! -Bob

It may be that your "black and white" tape is a copy of a tape of another TV system, e.g; it's a PAL recording of a French SECAM tape, or it's a US NTSC tape.
In other words, because it's a copy of an original of a different system, the colour information isn't reproducible.
iMovie may thus be confused about what it's supposed to be importing.
This is suggested because you say that "..the TV hooked up to the VCR shows a good, watchable picture!.." ..If it's a multi-standard TV which can display PAL, SECAM and NTSC, and it's a multi-standard VCR, then it may be showing you a reasonable copy of the original, but iMovie isn't automatically multi-standard (..you have to choose PAL or NTSC when starting a project..) and so it's caught between two systems. Why not see if you get any better result by changing the default standard (PAL or NTSC; 25fps or 30fps) and then starting a new project?
If you're in Euro-PAL land, and you can manage to find and borrow an NTSC player, and import through an NTSC camcorder (..or the other way round, depending on where you are..) you might see if that can play the tape correctly.

  • How to colorize and old black and white video? please suggest easy ways :)

1- please tell me more than a way of how to colorize the black and white movie ..!
what is the best way to do that in less time as possible (actually i found it a hard work ).  please tell me there's a way to make it
2- also i want to know if there is a palette of color value numbers . let me make it more understandable
when i applied the color balance effect on an adjustment layer (using AE)  to have a try to color a frame,  i got the RGB values to control by which the color i want. so i found it a little hard to get far a way from the orange , purple , green , pink , red , gray and blue colors via combining the values .. so i am asking if there is a palette that could help me to mix color values and get more colors!!!
3- what programs could do this? i have an idea that after effects could do it but what else?

Here's a step by step and a few other ideas. To add color to a black and white film it is best to use the Color blend mode. AE CC 2014 has very powerful mask tracking which can be used to isolate things like faces and clothing. A bit of hand work may also be required. For some scenes, you'll need to use RotoBrush to isolate the elements you want to colorize. You cannot effectively colorize just by manipulating channels unless you want very subtle colors because black and white images may have exactly the same color channel values for a man's shirt that you want to turn blue, the leaves on a tree that you want to turn green or the car he is driving that you want to turn red. You can, however, create a mask that tracks the car and then add a red layer or fill effect using the color blend mode to turn the gray car red and maintain all of the highlights and shadow values.
Really powerful color correction software has the power to isolate and track areas based on edges (much the same way rotobrush works) so this kind of color correction can be done on the fly but it still requires a separate mask for every color you want to add.

  • Black and white pdf prints pink

I found an old black and white family photo online, downloaded and saved it as a pdf. But when I try to print it, it's is no longer black and white, but has a decided pinkish cast. This also happened with one letter from the same site. I have a mac flat panel, running OS 10.4.11, and an HP 5610 all in one printer. Is there any way to get this to print in B&W?
Also, when I tried to email the photo the way I've done previously -- go to print, then to pdf drop down menu and chose Mail PDF, I'm told its not supported. Same answer if I try Preview.  I had to start an new email and add photo as an attachment. No biggie, but the way I had been doing it was easier.
Oh, and the last tine I used Adobe, I was alerted to an update, which I did install. Was this my first mistake?

Thanks. But just to be clear, the file as it sits on my desktop, is
black and white. The color, which reminds me of an photo that was
overexposed, only appears upon printing it. In fact, when I attach it
to an email, I again see the black and white photo. No color.
I will though try your suggestion.
    Thanks,
    Ken

  • Enhancing black and white photos

I have some old washed out black and white photos that I would like to improve.  What are the best steps to use with Elements 10 that will sharpen and enhance my old black and white photos?
    Thanks,
    DMDJ

As hatstead mentioned, you can go about it with a levels adjustment.
Here is a faded b&w where I invoked a levels adjustment. The "rule of thumb" for enhancing many pictures is to move the left & right sliders to where the histogram starts to rise. Then move the middle slider to darken or lighten the overall picture.
    After moving the sliders:
If you then invoke levels again to see the result, it is the optimal bell-shaped curve:
You can so the same simply by invoking Auto Levels. Here is what the histogram looks like after Auto Levels on the original picture. Again, you can then fine-tune the result via the middle slider.

  • Reprinting black and white photos

I'm using an HP Photosmart Premium C309g All-in-One Printer.  When I reprinted an old black and white photo, it came out perfect.  However, on subsequent black and white reprints, some photos had orange tints and others had purplish tints.  Is there a way of correcting this problem.

  • How do i colorize a black and white photo?

I have an old black and white photo of a family member I would like to colorize. how is this done? ? I am new to photoshop.

Is this a scanned image? If you have a grayscale image you have to do it manually using a brush tool and choosing colors with the color picker.
If the image was originally RGB and converted to B&W then it’s possible to use:
    Enhance >> Adjust Color >> Hue/Saturation
There is a colorize checkbox and you can simply adjust the sliders for an overall color change.

  • Black and white photo printed sort of pink...what's wrong

I  have a HP 7520 Photosmart all in one printer.  Has been printing fine until today. I was trying to print an old black and white photo. It came out sort of pink.  Have tried all the tips I could find. What is wrong?

The black ink is pigmented and not compatible with photo paper so when printing on photo paper only the color and photo inks are used. A pinkish result would indicate that cyan is not printing properly.  The troubleshooting steps in the document here may help resolve the issue.

  • Can't select colours to colorise a black and white photo.

    Hi,
I am trying to colorise an old black and white photo, and I am unable to use any colours that are not black, white or grey for some reason. I select light blue to fill the sky, but it wont actually select it and stays grey. How do I fix this?
    Thanks!

If you look at the document tab, I'll bet it's Grayscale/8.  You would want RGB/8.

    Hello Everyone,

  • Black and white photos for an iPhoto Book

I've scanned many old black and white photos into iPhoto and would like to create books with them, but I read that iPhoto will not work with black and white photos for books, only color photos. Is that true and are there any suggestions for how to create a book using them? Thanks.

There is a bug affecting PPC Macs with iPhoto 6.0.5 and QuickTime 7.1.3 that causes it to crash with photos that have no color profile attatched. In addition, iPhoto 6 does not work well with Grayscale. So check these scans to see if they have no color profile or if the profile is grayscale. If so, you'll need to convert them to sRGB. They'll still be black & white, but they'll have a color profile that iPhoto 6 will accept.
Old Toad created an Automator application to embed the sRGB profile into your photos. Go to his Toad's Cellar and download the "Embed wRGB Color Profile 2" App. In Finder go in your Originals folder, then drop a roll folder containing these photos onto the app.

Before doing anything, you might want to try inserting some of those scans into a book template and see what happens. To see how a book will print when you order it from Apple, choose Print when you are viewing the book. Allow it to assemble the file. In the Print Dialog box, click the PDF button and select Save PDF from the drop-down menu. Minimize the iPhoto window to find a little box asking you to select a location for the saved PDF. [If you don't go looking for this window you'll be stuck waiting indefinitely.] View the PDF and see how those black & white scans look.
