Touchpad and keyboard problems

I've had a long series of laptops and vaguely recall a problem like this from the distant past, but I can't seem to avoid the touchpad when I type and the sensitive thing sends my cursor skittering across the page.  I use a mouse and so have always had the touchpad shut off when a USB mouse is installed but I haven't been able to shut this one off -- even contacted the seller and his advice referred to a non-existent setting so I've recontated him.  So my question is, how do I shut the touchpad off when a mouse is installed on my HP Envy 15 with Windows 7?
Also, as I type and without rhyme or reason whole passages will be highlighted and then the next keystroke deletes them all.  This is a new problem for me.  I don't know whether the problem is with the mouse (it does this whether I'm using the touchpad or an an external mouse) or the keyboard.
Thanks,
Lawrence3

Hi there @Lawrence3
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel.
I understand that you are having trouble with the touchpad, when typing or using a mouse.  I am happy to help you with this.
First please refer to the following:  Using and Configuring the TouchPad (Windows 7 and Vista)
You will either want to adjust the sensitivity of the Touchpad or outright disable it.
Also you should look at this fine post by @Dragon-Fur Re: disable touchpad on laptop
I hope this helps.

I have a black MacBook from 2008 and tried downloading snow leopard 10.6. It told me I had to restart my computer. However once I restarted my MacBook my touchpad and keyboard were not working so I am unable to sign in. I have no idea what the problem is

You cannot download the upgrade to Snow Leopard.
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
             7. Xserve (Early 2009)

    Hello there, omsmac.
The following Knowledge Base article provides a great place to start with some good information that can apply to keyboard issues as well as trackpad:
Trackpad or Magic Trackpad is jumpy or erratic
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1449
Aside from the usage recommendations, this recommended step is very practical:
If none of the above resolve the issue, try to rule-out software not created by Apple as a cause. To do so, start in Safe Mode.
There are some good steps for testing the keyboard as well found here:
One or more keys on the keyboard do not respond
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1381
If the issue persists after attempting Safe Mode, then you may want to try an SMC (System Management Controller) reset. The steps on how to accomplish that are found here:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

  • Touchpad and Keyboard not working (including external devices)

    Hi,
I am using an rmbp with win7 and macosx.
Win7 on my bootcamp partition was working perfectly(4 months+) until now .I restarted my system  and realized that the touchpad and keyboard are not working(inluding external mice/keyboard).I can boot into Macosx and the mouse and keyboard are working perfectly so its not a hardware problem.I havent set any restore points and have tried all the other recovery options (using f8 before booting) but to no avail
I have read some other solutions which involved opening the device manager but I cannot press anything when I login to windows.Does anybody have any idea except reinstalling windows? I would really appreciate any help !
    Cheers

I have even loaded my Bootcamp partition in parallels ,in hopes of repairing the installation from there but Parallels give an error about mouse coherence and I cannot use my keyboard and mouse there .
Does anyone have any other idea except reinstalling windows ? .Thanks !

  • My touchpad and keyboard don't work.

When I turn on my computer, my touchpad and keyboard don't work, and only the touchscreeen seems to function properly. It only turns on after a good ten or fifteen minutes. I have had to use a mouse.

hey maybe this link http://www.ubuntuask.com/q/answers-touc … 89324.html will help you, for me reloading the kernel module for the mouse with "modprobe -r psmouse" and "modprobe psmouse" did the trick.

  • How can I stop the Thinkpad Yoga 14 from disabling the touchpad and keyboard?

My dad got a Thinkpad Yoga 14 about a month ago and he usually uses his laptop at a 90 degree angle in bed. So when he is on his side, the laptop is on it's side as well. When he does that with the Thinkpad Yoga, the touchpad and the keyboard are disabled and he cannot use the laptop like he wants to. I think because it's a setting to not accidentally touch the keyboard or mouse when using it in tablet mode.
I cannot find any setting on how to stop Windows from disabling the touchpad and keyboard on rotate. I've turned off auto-rotate but can't see anything else. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

  • Lenovo G500 TouchPad and Keyboard wont function at the same time

    Lenovo Laptop G500
    Windows 8
    Synaptics TouchPad V7.5
    Driver Version 16.3.13.3
The Synaptics TouchPad and the keyboard won't function simultaneously. If I uninstall the driver for the TouchPad the keyboard and TouchPad will work simultaneously on the windows driver however the TouchPad is very limited. There is no option to turn off the palm touch listed as a fix in other forum post.
This problem makes it impossible to play games that require the TouchPad and mouse to work simultaneously I would appreciate any help in resolving this issue.
    Thanks in advance Dennis

    hi djdishaw,
    Welcome to the Forums.
    Can you try to:
    1. Lower the palm tracking and touch sensitivity to minimum, apply the changes and observe.
    - Link to picture
    2. If same problem,  try to update the Synaptics Touchpad driver to v16.3.15.1 and repeat Step 1.

  • Touchpad and trackpoint problems, especially when resuming from sleep

I am having persistent problems with the touchpad and trackpoint on my L530.  I prefer to use the trackpoint usually, and found that the touchpad was super-sensitive and caused the cursor to jump around during normal (touch) typing so I disabled the touchpad.  Next time the thinkpad resumed from sleep mode, the mouse was frozen.  Nothing would reactivate it.  I had to switch user, which temporarily fixed it, and then reactivate the touchpad.
If I try and change trackpad settings at any time other than directly after a reboot, the settings are greyed-out and I can't touch them. Right now, both trackpad and trackpoint are completely dead again, but I've plugged in a USB mouse and that seems to be working, so I've given up fiddling with it.  This will be a pain when I'm moving around with the laptop though!
The OS is Windows 7.  Yesterday I went looking for the most recent driver, uninstalled the existing one (as per guidance) and installed the new driver.  No luck.
I've heard this is a common problem and apparently installing a generic driver works, but I'm not completely sure what to use.  Anyone know?
Oh, and I'm not sure if this is related, but quite often when I resume from sleep mode the keyboard is also dead.  However, if I switch user it comes back to life.  So annoying but not the end of the world.

Thanks for posting this information in this forum. You just saved me a couple thousand dollars!
Based on my experience if you want to get this problem fixed as soon as possible you need to do the following:
    1. www.apple.com/feedback
    2. Post a video of the problem on www.youtube.com
    3. Send www.apple.com/feedback a link to the video on youtube.
    4. Encourage others to visit your youtube video and to post their own.
    Good luck!

  • Magic Mouse continually fails to left click, and keyboard problems

Since my Yosemite 10.10.1 update, my mouse, and keyboard keep failing periodically. After a nights sleep, when I try to open a program, by left clicking, it will occasionally only right click. Being able to left click, is very crucial, even more then right clicking, especially when trying to enter a website into a url, or when selecting a bookmark. Anyway I will restart my computer, and when I then try to enter my password, certain keys will then fail, and respond wt a low ping. It usually requires at least 5 to 10 minutes of a complete shutdown, until the keyboard and mouse work again. I keep fearing that my keyboard will fail, while entering this message. It occurs so very randomly, but has been occurring more often as time goes by. I worried that it might occur, before I'm done typing this post. Does anyone have any idea, what the problem could be, and have any remedy reccommendations?

    Nubz,
actually I'm still using a standard wired apple keyboard, wt the magic mouse, because the wire goes under my desk, and I was actually considering getting a trackpad. Still since my Yosemite upgrade, I'm having problem after problem, so I'm not sure I will even stay wt Mac. Honestly I've examined any and all solutions, in that support article, but none of them were relevant to my problem.
I did check & repair my Yosemite Disk Permissions using Disk Utility, and although it found only a few things wrong, and none were related to my keyboard, or mouse (most were for my HP printer), repairs seemed to rectify the problem.

  • Touchpad and Keyboard not working

For the last 2 weeks my keyboard and touchpad has not been working when I load onto the log in screen on Windows. The keyboard works while the computer is loading but once the log in screen comes up, I can not use both. I have tried taking the battery out and holding the power button and hitting F7 when the computer is loading but neither of them makes my touchpad or keyboard work. I can choose Safe Mode when the computer is loading but neither will work after Windows load. There was an update that completed two weeks ago and it started afterward.
    I have a HP Pavillion Dv6t - 1200
    Product Number FV161AV
I need to know how can this be fixed and IF it is worth fixing.
    Thanks in  advance

turn on the notebook while its turning on or booting up keep on tapping F8 button there will be options on how you want to boot the notebook choose safemode with command prompt, test your keys there and touchpad if it works most probably that your system got a malware that made the keyboard & touchpad malfunction... you got 2 options you could perform system restore but after a while the issue will exist or you could perform recovery but will wipe out all the information on the notebook (it will revert the notebook back to factory default condition) better to back up all  your data.
there is no harm in trying, just always give your best shot!!!

  • Help Please Software/Hardware Mouse And Keyboard problem.

I have a Corsair Vengeance and a Razr Black widow keyboard and the problem is that when i right click it wont let me select any options, it will flicker violently only when i move the mouse and im getting strange yellow highlight boxes whenever i drag
the left mouse button(ex Volume Sliders). The keyboard will only bring up shortcuts and the start button on my keyboard will open narrater settings. Ive noticed that it only happens when my computer falls asleep and when i turn it back on the problem will
start. Ive just installed advanced system care and ive done he maintanence. Can that be the problem? Ive already uninstalled it but the problem keeps happening.

    Try reinstalling the driver http://www.razerzone.com/au-en/gaming-keyboards-keypads/razer-blackwidow/
Also run a "sfc /scannow" from the command prompt
Also in advanced power management setting disable the USB power saving options (think its called USB hybrid power saving)

  • Satellite Pro L500-19X boots ok but touchpad and keyboard fail

Satellite Pro L500-19X running windows 7.
The machine boots ok, then at the login screen neither the touchpad or keyboard works.
The only way I can overcome this is to go back to a previous restore point.
After this, the machine runs fine until I power off, on powering up again, I get the same issue.
The machine has the latest updates applied.
    Any pointers welcomed.
    Regards,
    C.

    Hi lfc1892,
Have you tested external input devices? Maybe your internal devices are faulty and must be replaced. In this case the external input devices should work properly! :)
Furthermore you should follow the instructions posted by Dr.Lamp. Check this also in safe mode and in BIOS. In worst case you have to reinstall Windows

  • Touchpad and keyboard don't work simultaneously

Hey everyone! I just got a new Edge 15 yesterday (this is the Best Buy exclusive one, and it's more expensive of the two options available), but I'm having an issue with it that's really preventing me from enjoying using the machine, and it's incredibly frustrating!
Whenever I press keys on the keyboard and go to use the touchpad together with it, the touchpad freezes/delays for a number of seconds. It makes it incredibly difficult to play any kind of casual game or just browse the web. I've spent a long time looking up solutions, but none of them have helped at all. This Lenovo uses the Alps driver and while it has palm tracking, turning it down to minimum doesn't fix the problem, neither does going through windows 8.1 and choosing the option to have no delay in the mouse/touchpad settings there. I have no idea what to do to fix this problem, if anyone could help that'd be amazing!

    Try resetting your SMC.
Resetting the SMC of an Intel-based portable Mac with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: This will not delete any data.
The SMC is responsible for controlling various system functions. None of your data will be deleted by resetting the SMC.
Shut down the computer by going to Apple () > Shut Down…
Select Shut Down or allow the computer to shut down automatically.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter into a power source and then connect it to your Mac if you have not already done so.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift (⇧), Control (⌃), and Option (⌥) keys and the Power Button at the same time.
Release the (left side) Shift (⇧), Control (⌃), and Option (⌥) keys and the Power Button at the same time.
