Touchpad in Cinnamon stops working

So this has happened twice now. I got arch setup on my new Acer Aspire 1830T and everythings great. I'm trying out cinnamon as my desktop environment and I'm loving it. Here's the problem, after a few days, my trackpad just stop working all together. No idea why. I wiped out nearly all the config files in my home directory, bringing me back to a nearly clean install. And it works again. Then a few days later same problem. I tried selectively wiping some config files to try to narrow down the culprit but I didn't get it working until I had just wiped out everything again.
Here's my home directory (Omitting various personal directories e.g. pics, videos, etc...):
[user@host ~]$ ls -lha

And this is what I've used both times to fix this issue:
[user@host ~]$ rm -r .ICEauthority .adobe/ .cache/ .config/ .dbus/ .esd_auth .gconf/ .gnome2/ .gtk-bookmarks .gvfs/ .local/ .macromedia/ .pki/ .pulse .pulse-cookie .thumbnails/
Obviously I don't want to keep resetting all my settings, so this is not an ideal solution. Also I should add that only the track pad is affected. My wireless mouse works fine.  The track pad is not disabled in the cinnamon settings or gnome shell settings and the Fn button to enable/disable the trackpad is set to enable. Anyone got any information on a better fix? Or any idea what's casuing the problem in the first place? I did a quick google and searched here on the forums but didn't find anything but a linux mint forum post about a similar issue on cinnamon, but no solutions had been found as far as I could tell.

jumoss56, If I understand the issue clearly, the touch pad " Vertical scroll zone" works for a period of time, and then stops. The scroll zone function does not return until you close the lid and reopen it?
I would like you to enable "Two Finger Scrolling" to test if the scrolling capacity is removed, or just that zone on the touch pad stops working.
The next time the scroll zone fails, before trying to fix it, I would like you to see if you can use the "Two Finger Scrolling" gesture to see if scrolling is still available. Let me know how this goes.

  • X1 Carbon touchpad and trackpad stops working.

Received my new X1 Carbon 2014 this week. After only two minutes of use, the trackpad and toucphpad stopped working.
I hade to use an external mouse, and even after all driver updates it still didn`t work.
If I restart the machine, sometimes the track-touchpad will work, but suddenly it freezes up again (after only minutes of use), and I will have to restart to fix the problem. Have used it for 5 hrs now, and how probably restarted about 30-40 times.
Anyone know what is causing this problem and/or how I can fix it?

    Same issue here.
Bought my X1 carbon 20A7 last month.
The touchpad and trackpoint stop working after a while. Sometimes after minutes of use, sometimes after half an hour. When I close the lid, to let it go to sleep, and wake it up again they both work again. Another interesting (might be a coincedance) issue is that when I wake the laptop up after this has ocurred, the fingerprint reader does not work to log back on.
I have done a fresh install of windows 8.1 and updated all windows and Lenovo drivers.
I hope this gets solved quickly. It's kind of ridiculous for such a premium laptop.

  • FIXED: X300 - Touchpad and Touchpoint stop working at random

Had a user today with an X300 say that his touchpad and touchpoint just 'stopped' working; plugging in a USB mouse allowed him to continue using the laptop, but both onboard devices were dead. We tried the FN + F8 toggle, which normally disables the touchpad; this time it said "UltraNav Driver Not Installed."
I reinstalled the UltraNav Driver and Utility, as well as the Hotkeys application. Multiple reboots later, the touchpad and touchpoint were still disabled.
The fix, it seems, is to go into the BIOS (F2 at boot I believe?) under Config --> Mouse --> and disable EITHER the Touchpad OR the Touchpoint. When both devices are active, neither will work. When one device is disabled, the other will work.
I'm waiting on word from Lenovo about a better fix, but for now this will let you use the laptop without a USB mouse.

    @xyster,
Have you tried doing a factory recovery?

  • Touchpad bottom buttons stopped working

    hi!
something strange happend to my laptop (ThinkPad T520), yesterday bottom buttons of touchpad just stopped working... upper buttoms seems to work fine, except for one thing, in Ubuntu sometimes they don't work too and I noticed that turning off and on the touchpad helps. In Windows upper buttoms seem to work fine, but bottom buttons still do not work.
since bottom buttons issue relates to both OSs I have it looks to be something with laptop itself, I had no problems with touchpad or keyboard for 1.5 years of using it (I even reinstalled Ubuntu yesterday, I thought something happened to my system, but it didn't help, still the same issues, and still I have to turn on/off sometimes...)
    My OSs:
    1) Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
    2) Windows 7
I did not update anything during last few days, and actually I use Windows only to check something (so rare enough), so I'm sure I was not updating anything by myself there. Although I can't say that anything was updated automatically, and I could just miss that it happened.
Unfortunately for me I am in the business trip, I am limited to what I can do about it, as well as feel uncomfortable to work with my laptop now (I got used to use my bottom buttoms with touchpad...). Is here anything I could do about it on my own without any risk to damage anything?
thanks in advance for any advice!!!
    Max

actually I was wrong regards Windows, touchpad works strange there, by default pressing anything (except for bottom buttons, they do not work at all, as I wrote) opns a popup menu. I've applied all important and advised updated from Lenovo, also I've updated my bios to the last available version (I believe 1.42). Nothing changed, turning touchpad on/off, even in bios, does not change anything there. Using UltraNav (also installed the last available) I turned of extra functionality for touchpad buttons, and now at least upper buttons works in expected way, presing touchpad also do not show popup anymore.
after bios updating, in Ubuntu no visible changes: upper buttons function as before, touchpad itself works well, bottom buttons do not work at all. Lokks like I can't do anything about it

  • NB100 touchpad scroll bar stops working after exit full screen mode youtube

I have few Toshiba laptops, satellite, and now netbook100.
All of them share one problem, touchpad scroll bar:
It will stop working after exit full screen mode in youtube.
Here is how to reproduce the incident:
    1. using any mainstream browser, start playing a youtube video, click full screen button at the bottom right corner of the video.
    2. click on the [cross] to exit the full screen mode. (next to full screen button.)
    3. check if you scroll bar still functioning.
    4. a reboot will restore the function.
Currently, Im on vista, I believe in XP you will have the same problem.
Searching in google (touchpad scroll bar stops full screen youtube) will return more people share the same question but no answer.
Environments: win xp all, win vista all.
Windows all most updated driver, touch pad driver up to date.
This is not a major tech problem but for a netbook, this is very annoying.
If anyone have this problem or answers, please share it here.
    Thank you in advance.
    regards.

I had the exact same problem on my laptop and after a lot of searching, I finally found the simplest solution that really works for me so here goes:
Once you exit the full screen video and the scroll pad has stopped working, click once anywhere on the youtube page(just to unfocus from the video) and press the spacebar button on your keyboard twice.
Et voila, your scroll pad should be working again. Beats the hassle of having to log off everytime.
    Hope this helps

  • Touchpad button LED stopped working on Satellite P series

I run the ccleaner 2.17 in the log function has stopped working and led to the play, stop, rewind ... " keys, between the two speakers.
    Can someone help me?

Seems the CCLeaner cleaned some registry entries or values which are responsible for the Toshiba button functionality
As Akuma said you could reinstall the VAP to get this issue solved but you could also set the OS to the early time point using the Windows system restore tool.
I think this would be a faster workaround

  • My touchpad just randomely stopped working and i dont know why? can someone please help me.

i was using a plug in mouse and now i cant use my touchpad even when the mouse is unplugged. i have a hp pavillion gseries. can someone please help me, i dont like carrying a mouse around with me everywhere i take my laptop.

Well, if you updated to 8.2, then you are living in a different world than the rest of us. 8.1 was just released on Monday.
Do you not have an iCloud or iTunes backup that you can restore to? Have you not been importing your photos to a photo library on your computer?
Maybe you could start from the beginning and we can see if we can help. If you had to restore your device, and you have absolutely no backups, then, I'm afraid you are out of luck. However, if you have backups, or if you have been importing your photos on a regular basis, then probably most of your stuff can be recovered.

  • HP pavilion dv6 touchpad stopped working (read this if you have dropped your computer)!

Hello, this is not a question it is advice for people having touchpad issues with their dv6 (I've noticed a quite a few posts). My touchpad suddenly completely stopped working one day (didn't respond to anything that I did).
Most of the forums I've been to (actually, all of them... and they were many) ask you to try reinstalling the driver. However, if you did not recently uprage your OS or make any such major changes this is not likely to be the issue.
Try going to device manager. If your touchpad is not showing up under the mouse and pointer devices section (it should say Synaptics something or other) then it means that either something is broken OR your touchpad came unseeded.
For me, it was the second option (I drop my laptop... occasionally). The cable for the touchpad is held in place by a little plastic lever-like clamp. It can easily become loose, so try this out before taking your computer into a repair shop (and loosing it for weeks, not to mention the price if you're not under warranty!)
    Three easy steps:
    1) take the removable bottom cover off (that little plastic bit in the center where your hard drive is). For my model (6145dx), it just snaps off (with a flathead screw driver or other tool for leverage). You might have to unsrew a few things, but it should be easy.
    2) Take out the hard drive (held in place by 4 screws in most cases). You do not need to disconnect the cables leading to the hard drive! Just pull it out and lay it off to the side.
    3) Toward the very front of your computer (right under where your hard drive was, and where the touchpad is on the top cover) you will see the ribbon cables coming from your keyboard, touchpad, etc. Give them a little wiggle (just pull the plastic tabs that stick up. If one of them moves, then you need to re-clamp it! Push the cable all the way in and push down the lever.
Super easy! Should solve all your problems!

So my touchpad wasn't working and I have an HP dv6-6135dx. It started being messed up shortly after I took my PC apart to upgrade the screen. Sometimes it worked perfectly, sometimes it was completely unresponsive, sometimes the ring around the touchpad was lit, other times it wasn't etc.... It got worse and worse to the point where the touch pad almost never worked.
I followed this guide, and it didn't fix the problem; however, this got me thinking, and I pulled the keyboard out and reseated the touchpad cable where it connects right under there. BAM works perfectly. THANK YOU so much for this post, for some reason I didn't think to reseat the cable... I must have not plugged it back in completely when I took my laptop apart. You can find the service manual for the dv6t here Its in the first post

    Hi,
Try using Recovery Manager to reinstall your original Touchpad driver ( probably Synaptics ) - the procedure for using recovery manager to reinstall Software and Drivers is detailed in the relevant document on the link below.
    Recovery Manager - Windows 8.
    Recovery Manager - Windows 7
After the reinstallation has completed, restart the notebook.

  • TouchPad has stopped working in Satellite L300

    Hi Xaxer, hi there,
as I dont know how to post a new topic, I just reply (I apologize for that way).
The touch pad on my L300 has stopped working. (Vista 32 bit). Fn and F9 does not change anything.
USB-Mouse works fine. Downloaded new touch-pad driver.
Touch pad is not shown in the device manager.
    What should I do?
    Any idea?
How can I check whether the tp-driver is installed properly?
    Thanks in advance.

    > How can I check whether the tp-driver is installed properly?
Go to control panel -> mouse -> last tab (Advanced or Pointing device) -> Advanced button
There you should see all touchpad settings.

  • HP Pavilion dm1-4000au Entertainment Notebook PC_Keyboard and Touchpad Suddenly Stops Working

    Hi there,
I have an HP Pavilion dm1-4000au Entertainment Notebook PC (QG411PA) running Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit for more than a couple of years already. During those times up until now, whenever my laptop is on standby for an hour or so, its keyboard and touchpad suddenly stops working, regardless if its running on battery or on AC power.
I always ensure that I have an external mouse in order for me to navigate properly and pull up the on-screen keyboard in order to type once that issue arises.
All appears to be updated in terms of Windows Updates and I even reformatted it, but issue still persists.
Is this particular issue that I am experiencing a harware issue? Perhaps a software issue? Or maybe a defective model itself?
Your prompt response is highly appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    Led

  • [solved] Touchpad scrolling and tapping stops working after Xorg 1.9

    Hi all,
My laptop is an Acer Extensa 5630EZ and it has been running for over a year with Arch without problems. However, since the xorg 1.9 upgrade the touchpad edge scrolling just randomly stops working. Everything else continues working fine. I have searched the forums and Googled but haven't found anything that fixes it. Logging out and back into KDE gets the scrolling working again (X restart I guess). I'm pretty much stumped for ideas. Please help!
    [edit]
    - I edited the title for a more accurate description
    - I noticed that tapping also stops working
    - Note that it initially works but then randomly stops... as opposed to others' where it does not work at all.

I know about Google's Linux search but I hardly use it... I just add Linux to my search terms. Thanks for the reminder though.
My laptop is an Acer Extensa 5630EZ with an ALPS 'GlidePoint' touchpad.
Searching for problems that seem related to mine does not bring up much. Xorg 1.9 being new is probably the reason. I have gone through the updated installation guide and tried to get everything in order. Some pages recommend HAL, Xorg does not. But without HAL, I have no suspend/hibernate option in KDE and VMWare will not work. The problem appears even if I run DBus only without HAL. So I've decided to to just run HAL.
I have removed all the extra stuff I don't need at startup. Most notable is syndaemon in bashrc (totally forgot I had that). I have to wait for it to stop working since it is unpredictable. Though, I have noticed that it seems to stop working when I use keyboard shortcuts/combinations.
Here is my entire Xorg log after it stopped working:
