Touchpad on Samsung NP300 Laptop

I just bought a new Samsung NP300 laptop today and I am playing around with it and working on all the settings for it.  The one thing that I am getting frustrated with, is I cannot seem to find where to adjust the settings of the touchpad.  I would like to change it so that the touchpad is used only for moving the cursor around, not for selecting.  As I try to type it is very easy to accidentaly very lightly tap the touchpad and the cursor is then in a new spot and it starts typing somewhere else on the page.  Does anyone know how to help me out on this one?  Thanks!

Go to the control panel, select mouse, click the device settings tab and click settings. Play around there but I don't think you can disable the selecting while allowing movement.

  • I fixed the LCD Brightness in my Samsung NP300 Laptop

tl;dr: acpi_backlight=vendor to kernel at boot (add in grub configuration) + modprobe -r samsung_laptop && systemctl restart gdm. (i discovered it with pf-kernel, need to try in stock kernel)
Well, i don't know if this is known, but i could not find it.
Maybe its a bug to be fixed that im not aware of.
Well, i had the common problem with the LCD brightness not responding. It used to decrease, but not increase. All of this running Gnome 3.
After days of fight what i did was download pf-kernel and configure it. I selected the "samsung_laptop" module as my common sense told me, and in case it was needed the Q10 Samsung or something like that module too.
I rebooted into the pf-kernel, with no luck, the same problem was still happening.
I decided to stop gdm and use startx to try some things.
First i modprobed the samsung_laptop module just in case, started X again, and it was the same.
And then i did modprobe -r samsung_laptop, restarted X... AND IT WORKS.
NOTE: The acpi_backlight=vendor is needed in the grub configuration to this to work.
    Oddly, without the samsung_laptop module.
So i rebooted to try this again. Unloaded the module, did systemctl restart gdm, aand there it was working again.
So, it may be a problem with that module, or maybe its not needed after all, im not sure.
I'm kind of newbie in all of this, so if this is dumb or something im sorry but i think it may be helpful for somebody else in my situation.
By googling i only found scripts to make this work that i did not like.
Is neccesary that i place a bug report? Im not sure if that kernel module is made to fix this or if its for something else, so i dont know if the bug report makes sense.

More history on what does what.
At first, i could only decrease the brightness 1 step, from the max to one below.
Then i put acpi_backlight=vendor in grub, and i could decrease the brightness to some value (which is not the real minimum), but could not increase it more than 2 steps over that minimum once decreased (like locked in the 2 lower values).
To manually change the brightness i echoed values to /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness. The other one did not work (samsung...), but it wasn't what i wanted.
After changing kernel, unloading the kernel module samsung_laptop and restarting x it works.
Not sure if the kernel has something to do.

  • Issues with Fn-keys and Synaptics touchpad on Asus X51RL laptop

    Hello,
Since I installed Arch on my laptop, it's been working great. But I still have a few issues:
    1) Fn-keys do not work. The brightness Fn-keys work, but I think that's done internally by the laptop, since it works even in the BIOS. The sound Fn-keys don't work, which is the ones I really need. How can I fix this? And I read somewhere that I have to switch from the kbd drivers to the evdev driver, is that true?
    2) Since the latest update to the synaptics package in testing, the touchpad lost one-touch tapping, along with some other stuff. I know the solution is to disable hotplugging, but I sometimes need to plug in a keyboard or mouse, so I can't. How can I retain the scrolling and one-touch tapping settings from Xorg.conf AND hotplugging while using the latest synaptics?
    3) The pre-configured options for the synaptics touchpad in the archwiki are good, but not that accurate. The size of the scrolling section of the touchpad is a bit too large, among other things. It's a minor problem compared to the others, but it'd be nice to fix it. In Windows, I definitely remember the settings being more accurate. Is there a way to have the Synaptics driver autodetect like the Windows one, or am I missing something here?
    Thanks a lot in advance!

I have the S62J (Intel verified whatnot version) with this Asus, the brightness keys work. I think they are hard wired though as they work in the BIOS.
I tried the acpi-support, but I haven't had any luck with it yet. I'll have to mess with it some more to see if I'm missing something.
I'm also wondering if there isn't a different keyboard layout I should use. I notice that there is a 30-something-asus-something.fdi (I'm not on the notebook at the moment) on the system, but I don't know if it's being used by anything.
The other observation is that using the Fn button is throwing ACPI calls into my dmesg.log file. I need to research to find out how to use them.

My laptop stopped working last night (won't turn back on). The touchpad stopped responding. I did a manual shutdown by holding down the power button until it turned off - it won't turn back on when I press the power button.

  • Laggy touchpad on brand new laptop

Hi everyone. I got a new HP Stream 13inch touch screen laptop just yesterday.  I realized today that the touchpad (I don't have a wireless mouse of any kind) has been a little slow and laggy. It hasn't frozen up or anything, it's just laggy. Sometimes it will shift in another direction the second I stop using it. It's kinda annoying me and also worrying me, since it's a brand new laptop.  Earlier today, I noticed it was doing this, and I restarted my laptop. After that, it was working just fine and I thought it was just one of those glitchy things that happen randomly. But it's happening again right now and Idk what to do. I don't want to have to restart my laptop every single time.  Please help! This is my 3rd laptop already and I don't want something bad to happen to this one, too.

    Hey, thanks for the tip!
I tried adding the bit to modprobe.d, but no results. I believe the issue is with encryption, and this is why:
Until recently, I'd used WEP, but had to change it to WAP2 . I noticed issues shortly afterward, and just today, I fiddled around some more. Unencrypted download speed came in around 17-20 mpbs, WEP was 9-13. But, somewhat unfortunately, when I switched back to WAP2 to confirm the issue, I connected at about the same speed as the other encryptions. So it seems to be faster now, but I can't say why.
I suppose another explanation would be that changing the type of encryption reset something that needed resetting with my router.
    Any input is welcome.
    Here is this-
    # iwconfig wlan0
    wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"onliner"
    Mode:Managed Frequency:2.417 GHz Access Point: C4:3D:C7:92:07:2C
    Bit Rate=135 Mb/s Tx-Power=14 dBm
    Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
    Encryption key:off
    Power Management:on
    Link Quality=70/70 Signal level=-38 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:24 Invalid misc:2792 Missed beacon:0
So, what about this is wrong?

  • PSE 11 is unusable on a high definition screen such as my Samsung Ativ laptop's 3200 x 1800 resolution.  When will this be solved?

    See heading.

Just for your information, have a look at that feature request:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/problem_with_hi_res_monitors
It seems logical to think that Adobe is interested to solve the problem first in Photoshop, then in Elements...
I would not wait for a quick solution.
Just out of curiosity, what did you expect from a high definition screen ? Which display size ? Which distance from your eyes ? Is the surrounding lighting adapted for long hours of editing or retouching ? Do you edit on a dual monitor setup ? I am mainly interested in the ergonomy factors.

  • Touchpad MSI GT70 2PC DOMINATOR

    Hey guys!
First of all, i'm new here and I will give a short introduction to myself: I'm a Belgian finances/insurances student who plays Battlefield 3/4 on his laptop.
Since I upgraded my HP laptop to my GT70 i've had one very big problem: the usability of the touchpad! My previous laptop support multiple touch gestures. I've looked into my settings and normally my touchpad SHOULD support double finger scroll, but actually doesn't work. Only the one-finger scroll works. This was a feature that I used A LOT on my old laptop so I was wondering if it is a software problem or hardware problem? I have installed the recommended MSI driver (due to the fact that the driver from the Synaptics website won't install on my GT70).
I have contacted MSI support, but as usual with company support, it will propably take 2 months before I get a reply!
So hopefully the goeroes from this forum are able to help!

Quote from: JakeSully on 23-November-14, 05:54:53
it's a registry edit in windows registrar that wont update propertly, after second tought i'm now off on wrong track the issue i was thinkin of was the 2 tap right click thingy not 2 finger scroll hmm :/ but this might work for you anyway so i will have go and find the  tutorial so i can give you direction where to find synpatics registry keys so you can go through it and see if you find something there that will enable your 2 finger scroll feature.
I will get back to you when i found it.
In the main time try this method out and see if it fixes your problem.
Thanks! I've watched the video but it is just a simple introduction how to turn on the double finger scroll feature. I'm no total noob when it comes to fixing pc's, but i'm clueless on this little software problem!
And again, thanks for the help!

  • Lenovo G460 - dead pixel, LCD can't be waken up from sleep/ hibernation , very hard to use Touchpad

I got this unit as my birthday present last week. I was very happy about it, as i've been using Dell laptops for the past 6 years of my life, this is the very first time in my life that i'm getting a Lenovo laptop, and i gotta say i'm very disappointed. Friends around me saw me carrying a new Lenovo and they all went " oh my god, that's Lenovo leh !!!", and now i must say "it's no big deal, it's only Lenovo".
after i got this laptop as a present, i'd been quite busy with work and didnt even play with it much. But when i first got my hands on this laptop, i found the touchpad is the hardest one i have ever used in my life. i dont know if it's me or the touchpad itself. Sometimes, the right click doesnt work or the pointer just stalls on the screen for a few seconds no matter how hard i try to move it. Ok, i said it to myself, fine, maybe i got too used to Dell's touchpad, this is a laptop of higher end/ bigger name and it's too hard for me to use. i could get myself an optical mouse. But the nightmare is just about to start !!!
It's labour's day, i got 3 days off work and i started playing this new laptop. After playing around with it for half a day, i left it for shower. After i returned, the display turned off. I tried every way to wake it up and they all went in vain, only a hard power off would do the job. I got online, searched the forum and found that many other users were having the same problem as i had. Ok, read that a BIOS update would solve the problem, though it's not available now. I can be patient and not a crazy **bleep** complaining about it.
just the next day, i woke up from bed, turned on the laptop, as windows 7 was starting up, i suddenly noticed there was a **bleep** dead pixel !!!!! it's so tiny that it could be so hard to see, if it wasnt windows 7 startup screen (all black with some colorful animation at the center) i wouldnt have noticed it !!! I googled on G460 having dead pixel, oh my, i'm certainly not alone !!!
Now that i have sold off my old dell laptop, and had everything set up in this new laptop, and it seems that i need to return this laptop, and certainly i'll have to live my life without a laptop for the next few weeks. I gotta say it again, i'm very disappointed in Lenovo !!!
Now please let me know how do i return this laptop for repair or whatever you call it, as i work on weekdays in singapore and return to malaysia only on weekends, and this laptop was bought in Malaysia. looks like i gotta take a day off just to send this laptop back to lenovo..........what a big let down.
have had so many Dell laptopsand  never had a single tiny problem with them......

I'm banging my head because I can't find a solution to make my arch-install detect an audio CD
I assume that you mean the optical drive. I don't see a /dev/sr0 in /dev
Does it show up with lsblk or parted -l?
Looks like it's a LiteOn drive.
You can play an audio CD.
    mplayer cdda://
    mpv cdda://track[−endtrack][:speed][/device] −−cdrom−device=PATH
An audio CD doesn't have a mountable file system on it.

  • I just wanted to chime in here on the Synaptics Touchpad issues...

I have a Toshiba L305D-S5934 Laptop with an AMD Turion X2 Dual Core Processor, it has a Synaptics touchpad as do most laptops these days and I have run into the following problems: I am running Windows 7 RC Build 7100 (an official download not a torrent download) and my Synaptics Touchpad shows up as a PS2 compatable mouse in device manager. If I download the drivers that come through Windows Update they seem to work fine untill I reboot my system, at reboot just after the Windows 7 splash screen, she blue screens with a memory dump going to somewhere and then does an automatic restart, if I attempt to start windows normally after the restart she bluescreens again with the same results, and this will go on time and time again until I either go into safe mode and remove the Synaptics driver or let startup repair do its thing or do a system restore, all of which leaves me with a Synaptics Touchpad with erattic behavior, that loses its scrolling functionality, and is hypersensitive almost to the point that I can't type much of anything without the cursor jumping around all over the place and relocating like it has a mind of its own. Now Toshiba has something called Toshiba's Value Added Package (not much value there for 64 bit systems it seems this thing was a pain in Vista x64 and it is more of a pain in Windows 7 x64) I will not install  the Value added Package until I am convinced t hat Toshiba or whoever makes it gives a rat's rear-end about 64 bit systems and Windows 7 the last time I tried to install it  gave all kinds of problems and produced some blue screens of its own I believe. The Value Added Package however includes Toshiba's Flash Cards Utility that makes the Fn key work and gives access to disabling the Synaptics touchpad (you can do this in the driver as well, but when the driver is installed well she bluescreens except in safe mode) The Synaptics driver seems to do okay in safe mode so that could mean that another driver is causing the conflict but something is not wanting to lay nice with the Synaptics driver. I must note however that the Synaptics driver worked just fine in Windows Vista x64. Also I have downloaded the driver from Toshiba's site, the 64 bit Synaptics driver from the Synaptic's site and a couple of others, the one that came closeest to working the best was a version 12.something for HP laptops but the option to disable the touchpad wasn't in the driver. I usually use a mouse with my laptop but I use the touchpad when I take it places with me sometimes, it would be nice to have full functionality of both mouse and touchpad and to be able to disable the touchpad when an external pointing device is attached the way I could in Vista but right now I would settle to just be able to disable the touchpad until this is resolved so I can use the laptop without the cursor jumping all over the place and seemingly having a mind of it's own. As a side note I am very careful about allowing Windows Update to install any updates that it wants at this poing, more than once it has installed things that gave me bluescreens at reboot most notably the Toshiba Value Added Package and the Synaptics driver and maybe an Atheros Wireless driver but it does not yet seem to have the best interests of my PC at heart. On the other hand I have the 32 bit version installed on a Desktop PC with an old Athlon XP 2000+ and 2 GB of Ram it runs wonderfully nearly as well as Windows XP but there is no Synaptics touchpad on the desktop of course, and no Toshiba Value Added Package.
    Charles

I have had a similar problem, windows update does NOT update the synaptics touchpad.  I have a Toshiba Windows 7 and I did everything that was told by man and beast.
Finally, I went to control panel again, uninstalled synaptics and had to use the a program called Driver Update.  This program installed my Realtek Audio even though this was working apparently the two work together.  It SUCKS that you have to pay
to install security programs that run your programs but this was the only thing that worked for me and I went through months of  not having a touchpad.
I hope this helps others solve their touchpad problems.  Good Luck

  • [SOLVED] Slow/sluggish touchpad buttons response (sometimes)

    Hi all,
I have had this problem for some months now but have never looked into it, even if it is pretty annoying.
Sometimes (say one boot every three) the touchpad buttons of my laptop (see sig) behave strangely. Their response time is very long, I have to keep them pressed for ~half a second to make them trigger correctly.
This is very annoying when editing texts (selection a section of text with the touchpad) and using any click intensive application (ie editing a presentation with Prezi).
I use KDE and the only touchpad configuration I've ever done has been done via synaptiks.
I cannot tell after what update this started, it was too long ago unfortunately.
Since this happens only sometimes I don't even know where to start looking!
EDIT: I stress the fact that this happens with buttons, not with tapping
Last edited by OdinEidolon (2014-06-29 09:19:30)

    Just FYI,
this one solved itself some months ago after some kind of update.

  • Why doesn't FireFox support touchpad scrolling of pages. This is very annoying!!

Glaring shortcoming in ease of use in not supporting ALPS touchpad scrolling on a laptop computer w/ Windows 7.

    Philipp,
What you say works for me on Windows but not on mac. On windows, firefox plays h.264 encoded html5 videos using system's inbuilt decoders. But same does not seem to be true for mac?
    More details:
    - Tried this on mac 10.7.4 and 10.8.4, firefox version: 22
    - Both give a warning message in error console: "Content-type" of "video/mp4" is not supported.
    - Exactly same content type works on FF on Windows
This is how I am using video element in my page:
    <video src="/sample.mp4" class="vid" width="550" height="400" controls autoplay />
    Any info on this?

  • Default kernel config question: acpi video freezes my laptop

    Hi,
I have a Samsung X60 laptop that freezes when the acpi video module is loaded. The default Arch kernel config (and the derived suspend2 one) includes as built-in some of the acpi code (including the video bit). I'm interested to learn why they are included as built in, and if there is a way to selectively skip the acpi video built-in bit of code? (more selectively than acpi=off as a kernel parameter). Would it be reasonable to request a change to the default kernel config?
    cheers

bugs.archlinux.org to make sure its fixed.
the acpi video module is reasonably new and it can be compiled as a module iirc, so it shouldnt be any harm to have it compiled as such.
