Tower vs iMac for FCE

HI,
I am in the process of purchasing a new workstation for FCE. Most of the productions will be under 30 minutes. If I configure an iMac and a Tower the same will there be much difference in the processing power? I am just wonder whether it is worth the extra $1K or whatever it will be for the tower--is a 3Ghz the same on both machines? Is the tower faster accessing the HD?
Thanks so much.
Scott

It depends on your needs, desires and budget.
The iMac has 1 dual-core processor and 1 internal hard drive.
The Mac Pro has 1 or 2 quad-core processors and will fit up to 4 internal hard drives. You can also change the video card and add other internal hardware.
Yes, there is a difference in processing power, but not because of the Ghz alone.
No, there won't be a difference in HD access speed for the first (internal) HD.
Yes, the MacPro will access the 2d, 3d or 4th internal HDs faster because they would all be SATA 3GHz drives ... compared to the iMac where you would have to use an external FW400 or FW800 drive if you wanted more than 1 drive.
But both are very capable machines and if your 30 min videos are not overly complex you won't see much practical difference between the machines.
I hope this helps ...

  • Imac versus Macbook pro for FCE 4

Just wanted to know which would be better for FCE 4. I would like the cheaper option with the Imac, probably the 20 inch, 2.4ghz with 2-4gb or ram (possibly an external hard drive).
Is that a good setup or do you really notice a difference without the almighty Macbook pro? When does one need a Macbook pro for FCE 4 with it's superior graphic capabilities? Thanks.

    hey there wintermute,
the iMac should be fine-unless you need the portability of laptop. Apple has a page in Pro-Profiles for Jack Kasdan's movie "The TV Set" & his editor, Tara Timpone cut it @ home w/ FCP on her iMac. so there ya go.... definitely get an external FW HDD for your video clips you import.
    good luck.

  • Suitable iMac configuration for FCE HD video editing

    Hey Guys
I'm considering buying an iMac for HD video editing. I will be using FCE.
I'd like to receive your feedback on which iMac configuration would be the most suitable.
Specifically, how much performance improvement can one expect by upgrading from 2.66 Ghz to 2.93 Ghz? What about upgrading the type of graphics card and video memory? Will the performance improvements be significant?
As the maximum length of my videos will probably be around 20 mins, will a RAM upgrade from 4GB to 8GB be helpful?
    Thanks a lot!

There is some marketing speak here. This is the way graphics processing is described on the iMac site.
    20-inch and 24-inch model with 2.66GHz processor
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory
24-inch model with 2.93GHz processor, one of the following:
NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR3 memory
NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 graphics processor with 512MB of GDDR3 memory
ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics processor with 512MB of GDDR3 memory
This is the way graphics processing is described on the Mac mini page
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 128MB or 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory
This is the same as the MacBook and the 13" MacBook Pro and the low end 15" MacBook Pro. The 2.66GHz iMacs use shared memory and are in the same configuration.
Only the 2.93Ghz iMac, some of the 15" MacBook Pros, the 17" MacBook Pro, and the Mac Pro have dedicated graphics processing that does not have to call on separate resources. I think all the lower end machines will have graphics issues with the FxPlug filters.

  • Need help setting up external hard drive for FCE project

    Hi folks,
Basically I am looking at making a 20-30 minute video this summer of my motocross adventures and what not and have equipped myself with an iMac (2.93 GHZ Core2Duo 640GB 4GB) and of course, FCE. I have tried smaller projects before (ranging in length between 20 seconds to upwards of a few minutes) but have noticed an overall decline in computer speed which I am under the impression is being caused by the 10s of GBs of video project files and what not that seem to be scrawled away within my computer. Before I made any videos, my computer was sitting around 560 GBs of free space. Since making maybe 3-4 videos (50/50 iMovie and FCE) its down below 400GBs. I'm not sure whether it's the raw video files or the projects themselves that are so large, but it's slightly frustrating. Is there any sort of software (either third party or apple) that can look at your hard drive and tell you exactly where all the biggest files are? I'll post this question in the iMac forum as I realize this is for FCE, but I thought if anyone knew of one it would be extremely helpful.
Anyways, I have a SimpleDrive 320GB external HD that I plan to use as my external for making this project within FCE and would like some help in terms of how to set it up with FCE, what are the best settings etc. It is currently formatted with Windows, so I will also need help in setting it up for a Mac. I do have about 120GBs used on it already and was also wondering if I could keep this when re-formatting, but I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to that.
Sorry for the long-winded post; any information on this or something related would be fantastic. Thanks.

Yes, you can use your external HD with FCE ... provided it is formatted as +Mac OS Extended+ and is connected via FireWire.
You will need to back up any data that is on the drive that you want to keep. Before reformatting it. Formatting erases everything that is on the drive.
Use Disk Utility (located in your +Applications > Utilities+ folder) to format the drive.
After formatting the drive, go into +FCE > System Settings+ and change your FCE scratch disk location to the external drive.

  • Can anyone recommend a camcorder for FCE HD?

    Hello.
I want to get better picture quality and better output using FCE. I am currently using a Sony mini DV and want to move on to using SD cards for ease of use more than any other reason. I'm a little apprehensive about just going out and spending money on a new camcorder only to find out that FCE does not recognise the footage or leaves me with extensive rendering etc.
I have a brand new 27" imac and a budget of around £500 for the camcorder.
Any recommendations and reviews greatly appreciated. This Apple list of compatible cameras is a little vague and quite short, I don't know how often they test new cameras etc.
    Thanks.

Sony or Panasonic work just fine.
You must get a camera that produces standard AVCHD and interlaced footage.
Alot of cameras can produce progressive and interlaced and simply require configuring for direct use for FCE.
I use a Panasonic HDC-SDT750 with no problems. The 700 series are fine.
Newer models and names change regularly, so if you have got a short list in mind post them here and we can advise on specific models and suitablilty with FCE.

  • Glossy or non-glossy for FCE...

Does anybody know if the new iMac is okay for FCE resolution? I was told if you want the resolution to be unaltered for video editing, get a display that is non-glossy. The new iMacs do have this right? I was told to stay clear of glossy displays when it comes to video editing.
I guess the glossy gives you more contrast than what the final resolution would be. If so, that would give you a false interpretation of the final image. This would be critical if you are doing color correction and image adjustments I would think.
Can someone help he out here.

Very few computer screens will show colours etc. "properly".
By this I mean that most video is watched on a TV screen which invariably gives a different effect. For example, both my computer monitors, even at full brilliance do not give anything like the brightness of a TV screen.
There are also other video nasties such as interlacing related jitter which may not show up on your computer but is only too obvious on a TV.
This is why, when you are editing, you should have a TV type monitor attached to your computer so that you can spot problems immediately.
So really it hardly matters whether your screen is glossy or not - it comes down ultimately to individual preference.

  • I am trying to move my wife's iPhoto '08 library to my new iMac for iPhoto '11.

I am trying to move my wife's iPhoto (2007) library on a Macbook to my new iMac for iPhoto '11.  First, when I opened iPhoto on the iMac it asked me to create a library, which I did.  Then I imported her photos via a wireless network to my "new" library.  However, when it finally finished importing, it had imported 3 copies of each photo from her library.  I deleted the "new" library and started over.
Second, I opened iPhoto on the iMac and chose to use "other library."  I chose my wife's shared iPhoto library and it began transferring the photos to the new iMac (or so I thought).  This worked beautifully as it only brought over single photos and not 3 copies like discussed above.  After editing the new library and adding some photos from an old PC, I shut down iPhoto.  A few hours later I tried to open iPhoto on the iMac and it gave me the opening screen again with choices to create a new library or use a different library.  As it turns out, my wife's Macbook and been disconneted from our wireless network.  I was able to figure out that that unless my wife's Macbook is connected to the network then I cannot access the iPhoto library on my iMac.  I was under the impression that I had copied her library to my computer and that the photo files were now on the hard drive of the iMac.  So when her computer is offline I can no longer access the imported library.  I want her library to stay on the iMac as we plan to sell her Macbook.  As you now know, we cannot access her iPhoto library on the Macbook since she is running an older version of iPhoto.
So, what I would like to do is to completely transfer the photos from her Macbook to my new iMac and be able to access them on the iMac regardless of whether she is on the network or not because we plan to sell her Macbook to a friend.  Thank you for any help you can provide.

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
and select the Library that you moved.  That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
Your first option didn't work because you imported one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
Your second option didn't work because you simply referenced her library on the old machine.

How can i create a new usb connection (service)  on my iMac for sharing internet from my iPhone5 ( i seem have to deleted it )
i know its not a problem whit my carrier o data plan or sharing preferences on the ipone because when i use it un my laptop it works perfectly through
the usb and even works on the Imac through wifi and bluethood tethering but NOT through usb!!.
the problem is that trying to make it work i deleted the "profile" usb iphone on the network prefereces panel. Now i only have 3 options: ethernet / wifi / bluetooth
but not the usb iPhone i used to have.
And when i try to add a new one i dont get a USB option.
can some one help me please??
this is how it looks (after the bluetooth PAN i used to have USB iPhone option)

The question would be more appropriate in the Mac forums as it is not really related to the iPhone.

  • Apple Support for FCE HD - $200 per call???

i had what was probably a minor issue with editing in final cut express hd today. So naturally, i called applecare. They told me that it had been past the 90 days given to us for support from the point of purchase. Fine. However, the apple support representative went on to tell me that Applecare does NOT support pro applications and that i have to pay $199 per incident? I paid $299 for the product itself! Last i checked, i-pods were selling pretty well and i don't think steve jobs needs that money! Is apple serious? Where do they get off charging $200 for a ONE TIME PHONE CALL? Just because FCE HD is a "pro" application, apple can't assume that everyone who purchases this product is a "pro" from the start!
Where else am i supposed to get phone technical support for FCE HD??

These forums are here to give you technical advice. Admittedly it is not over the phone but it is FREE and lasts for ever.
Also you will have the collective knowledge of numerous people not just the one "expert" you happen to be speaking to.

I've had MS Office:mac 2011 on my imac for around 18 months now.  Outlook has just disappeared and when I find the file and open it it tells me that there is a problem and I may need to re-install it.  I've just done this using the installation disc which, then said the installation had been successful.
Outlook is still not working.  Can anyone please advise me on what to do next.

Remove MS Office 2011 completely (here are instructions) and reinstall it.
It's not a simple or fast process but it is important to follow all of the steps in order to get all the files that Office scatters around. This will not affect your data files, only MS Office and its preferences.

  • Considering dumping my iMac for a PC used for DSLR video editing on Premiere CS6. Help!

So I edit mostly 1080p DSLR footage taken from my canon T3i camera. I purchased a 2011 (the latest model) iMac a little over a year ago, upgraded the RAM to 12GB and it has worked reasonably well. I purchased the base model for $1200 which has a quad core i5 processor, 512mb of video ram, and a measly 500gb hard drive. The past couple of days I have come to the realization that I only use Adobe Programs for graphically intensive work (premiere, after effects, etc). I originally bought my iMac for final cut, but FCPX SUCKS and I switched to Premiere CS6 which works like a dream. Anyways, I'm a senior in high school and do lots of video editing (going to major in video production in college). I'm likely going to differ college for a year and continue my video production business (pretty informal) as well as video production internships at a couple companies (so don't suggest that I get a laptop for portability, not an issue). I just shot an entire wedding with 2 DSLR's and the footage takes up over 20% of my hard drive which is unacceptable. This is very troublesome for me and has been clogging up my computer considerably. I have realized it would make a lot of sense to sell my iMac and purchase a PC that's not only faster, but has much more space. I was ideally looking to sell my iMac for $1000, and from that get a better and faster PC setup for my video editing. $200 would be allocated for a 24" 1080p LED 5ms Asus monitor (from newegg) which would leave $800 remaining for the PC. Ideally it'd be nice to have a little cash left over. Some things that sound appealing to me are: an intel i7 quad core proccessor at least 3.0+ Ghz,  16 GB of ram (maybe 8 to start), 1 GB of video RAM (here is where I'm stuck, my Imac had a Radeon 512mb video card in it, but I've heard premiere runs especially well with nVidia CUDA cards? Don't really know too much about this stuff.) I have no idea what type of card to get, and if I would even see a performance upgrade from my iMac. For storage I'd like at least 2TB of space, should I get two seperate 1 TB drives? One for boot and software and another for video files? Anyways, I assume I can benefit from selling my 2011 i5 iMac to get a faster PC equivalent at a lower price since I mainly edit videos (which is pretty graphically intense) from an HD DSLR camera. I've noticed premiere rendering times on my mac are starting to get pretty slow these days. Ideally it'd be nice to buy a desktop (already assembled) maybe from HP for around $600 (not including the monitor). I'm not completely against building a PC from parts (since I know a friend who can do it for me) I just need help figuring out WHAT exactly it is that I need and would benefit from.

I have an external hard drive that was formatted by a PC and has files and directories copied to it etc. I want to use it on my IMAC for backup. I see it on my my IMAC . I can open files etc.  But I can't seem to write to it nor can I delete current content. I don't care if I lose current content. How do I initialize it for use with the MAC?

You can't write to it because it's formatted as NTFS which OS X will read but not write to. If you want to continue using the drive with both a PC and OS X you will need to download and install NTFS-3G so you can then write to it from your Mac. You can get NTFS-3G at:
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24481/ntfs-3g
If you want to use the drive exclusively with your Mac then move the data off it and reformat it in Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utilities) as Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)

I have used Airport Time Capsule with my iMac for a couple years. I recently purchased a MacBook Air and when it tried to backup to Time Capsule it couldn't because Time Capsule is full. How can I now use the 3TB Airport Time Capsule to back up both the iMac and MacBook Air? I don't mind losing earlier backups. I have excluded some items from backing up, but since the Airport Time Capsule is full, I can't even begin to back up the MacBook Air.

    On your Mac.......
Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click on the Disks tab at the top of the window
    Click Erase Disk
On the next window that appears, select the Quick Erase option, then click Erase
The operation will only take a few minutes.
Now you are ready to start new backups of both Macs.  Back up one Mac first, then back up the other.  Do not try to back up both Macs as the same time.
