Would installing TowerModel-G5's Tiger-Operating-System do any harm to
iMac-G4-Model. Would it work?

No, you cannot use hardware specific disks that shipped with a different computer model. Besides that it would also be illegal.

Tiger Install on iMac G3/400 DV reboot problem.

Hi there, first time post .
I obtained a slot loading G3/400 DV. I replaced the 10GB that was inside it, with a 80GB. It has aproximatly 320MB of RAM and does have firewire.
I believe the CD-ROM is toast, as it will not boot of a CD when 'C' is held down. I have managed to install OS 9 onto it, by transfering a clean install of 9 via firewire and upgraded it too 9.2.2. Everything worked fine. System boots fine.. etc..
I have just bought a DVD copy of Tiger for my Cube(needed 9 before for, my UD12X12 tablet). I read it is possible to install OS X via Firewire. I held down T and all that, and put X onto the 80gb via the DVD from the cube. Now, when I reboot the iMac I get a flashing folder with a ? on it, and will not rebbot on a Option hold down.
What am I doing wrong, please help.
PS: The previous HD, has a dual boot with OS X and 9; but it has a admin lock on it, and is only 10GB.

I am not certain, but your 80 GB might be a machiine that requires X be installed on the first 8 GB's of a drive. You may need to partition.
Keep the machine in target mode, and see if the cube starts from the installation. This would be a good clue, if the install was good.

Installing Tiger to a iMac G3-700 SE

Hi everbody,
Recently purchased a DualCore G5 2GHz. Awesome machine. It came with pre-installed Tiger OS. I'd like to upgrade my older computer as well. Therefore I have a few questions, all help is highly appreciated.
1: Can I install Tiger to an iMac G3-700? Or is there a minium hardware requirement?
2: I assume Tiger installer CD is a DVD-Rom. Therefore my iMac was not able to read it. Is there any other way to use the installer CD toward older computers without DVD reading capabilities? What if I cpoy the installer CDs to an externa hard drive, can I run the install from there?
3: Do you think an iMac G3-700 (512mb ram) would be too slow on Tiger OS?

Mac OS X Version 10.4 requires a Macintosh with:
PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
Built-in FireWire
At least 256MB of physical RAM
A built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
At least 3.0 GB of available space on your hard drive; 4GB of disk space if you install XCode 2 developer tools
DVD drive for installation (get CD media for $9.95)
The Tiger retail install package and the Tiger install package that ships with a new Mac purchased is on DVD media.
The Tiger install package that ships with a new Mac purchase is model and system configuration specific and cannot be used to install Tiger on another Mac model. If this were possible, it would be a violation of the single user license agreement that you agreed to and against the law.
If your iMac meets all other minimum system requirements except for having a DVD drive, purchase the Tiger retail install package and if the iMac is capable of Firewire Target Disk mode, you can connect your old and new Mac together this way to install the Tiger retail install package on the iMac.
If not, you can use Apple's Media Exchange Program to exchange the Tiger retail DVD media for CD media.

I tried installing Tiger on my iMac with xPostFacto 4. The first 2 attemps failed, and on the 3rd, it rebooted, only to be followed by a kernel problem. I tried again today. I got the Apple logo, followed by this:

Tiger may be looking for more RAM. I've heard reports of the install failing with less than 256MB RAM installed.

Installing a generic version of Tiger on an Imac without a DVD drive

I am trying to install Tiger on an Imac via an Iomega external dvd drive and not had any success. The Imac shows Tiger is present in the StartUp dialogue box and I can select it and choose restart. However nothing happens. Has anybody any suggestions?

You probably want to post in the iMac CRT G3 discussion area.
Is this a USB DVD drive or a FireWire DVD drive? The iMac can not boot OS X from a USB drive of any kind.

Install problem with tiger on an imac g5

Hi,
I just purchased tiger for a powermac, and on this website it states that it will work on my imac g5.
When I try to install Tiger on my imac it tells me it cannot install on this computer!! the website says it can, im getting annoyed with it telling me i can't!!!
my Mac fits all the requirements, the only thing i can think of is that i upgraded my memmory to 1gb, could that cause a problem installing??

It sounds like they sold you a model specific set of install media that is not compatable with your hardware. I would try and see iuf you can get your money back.

Ok, I am getting Tiger Disks this week. I want to know the procedure for installing it, from beginning to end. I'm currently running OS 9.2.2 (latest updates) & I have the latest 4.1 Firmware Update. On this model, will I have to first Partition the Drive as suggested with the Tray Loaders ? Also, I read somewhere that I can upgrade to 1GB Ram on this model. Is this correct ? Help!!

You could buy an external DVD drive. It needs to be firewire and bootable by Mac OS. If you have another PPC with firewire, you could try target Disk mode and installed tiger that way.
You need to figure out the level of your firmware before installing 10.2 or greater. ( The PC name for firmware is BIOS. ) Installing 10.2 with a down level firmware will most likely make your iMac unusable and difficult to fix.
Figuring out what level of firmware you have?
1) Mac OS 9.x or 8.x, you need to use the Apple System Profiler.

2) Mac OS X, use the System Profiler.

click on the More Info... tab
click on Hardware
read the Boot ROM Version
3) Open Firmware, boot into Open Firmware.

The first output line contains the firmware level. Mine reads:

Some machine may not contain the firmware level but some other number which can be translated to the firmware level.
On my machine, I have 4.1.9f1.

Problems installing Tiger on 700mhz iMac

Hi - I think I have the answer, but wanted to double check with the forum experts!
I have a. I'm trying to install Tiger (that came with the next generation iMac), but when it starts up from the Tiger install disk (using external DVD drive), I get the "screen of death" (ie: black screen with giberish and a gray circle in the center).
I take it that my copy of Tiger is not retail and specific to my newer mac only? And that is why I'm getting this message?
Are there any copies to purchase for my older iMac? Thanks in advance for any help!

Tiger upgrade to iMac G3?

I have a "Snow" iMac G3 with 192 MB memory, and 30 GB hard drive. I currently am using OS10.1.5, but still have OS9.2.1 on it. The serial number is RN0395LWJVA if this will serve as any additional clues.
I'd like to upgrade to Tiger, but after many hours of reading, am still unsure whether my machine/software will take it.

You do not have enough RAM. The bare minimum required is 256 MB.
I also don't think that Mac model has a DVD drive, so you would have to exchange the Tiger DVD for CD media.
It is possible to upgrade your iMac though, if you add more RAM.
Here is some additional info.
Mac OS X Versions 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4, are complete system upgrades that must be purchased.
The point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), and 10.4.x to 10.4.8 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Jaguar and Panther, are no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
If you know what you are looking for, Jaguar Full Retail CDs, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, FastMac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Jaguar and Panther are only on CDs, not DVDs.
The discs should look like the images in the above links.

Before upgrading to any OS X version, check to see if your Mac needs a Firmware Update.
If one is required, you must start the computer from a Mac OS 8 or Mac OS 9 System Folder on the computer's hard disk, not from a CD, in order to install it.
Once Jaguar 10.2.x is installed, you can use the 10.2.8 Combo Update,
or if Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version of either OS.
If your Mac meets the System Requirements for Tiger, you could also consider installing that. Which your iMac does not.
And then use the PPC 10.4.8 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.

I have a Powermac G4 15" and an imac G4 17". The p-mac has Tiger and the Imac has Panther. Can I use the install disc that came with the p-mac to install Tiger on the imac?

PowerMac G4s never were 15". Don't you mean Powerbook G4 15"? If you mean Powerbook G4 15" and it came with Tiger, then the answer is no, as my FAQ explains:

Can't get Leopard to install on iMac G5
Hi folks, I'm trying to install Leopard on my 20" iMac G5, but the install never completes. I get an error related to "essential package" failing or some such. I'm using a retail copy of Leopard.
I've read that many people have had trouble loading Leopard on the G5, but I don't now what the real problem is, or what the correct solution would be to making the install from the disc work.
I've also read that it might be a problem that the iMac G5s might not know how to read the install DVDs properly (despite the disc being verified earlier in the process).
I know the problem isn't the disc media because I have two separate retail DVDs of the Leopard installer (10.5.3). I tested them on other machines and they have worked. I even tried installing from a disc image of the installer, but no luck.
Any ideas?

The iMac appeared to work correctly under Tiger, but it did have a problem. I had just got un-repairable error on the 4-year old drive that came with the machine. I installed a new Seagate barracuda hard drive because of. This was all before the Leopard install attempts.
Permissions were all repaired. New drive and other HDs were all verified. All devices were disconnected for install attempts. Tons of space on newly formatted drive, as well as other external drives I tried this on. So it's not the media, and it's not the hard drives.
I am using third-party RAM. Tech tool indicates that it is okay. Perhaps I should try installing with only the RAM that came with the machine.
I contacted Applecare several days ago and they said the usual. Repair disc. Repair Permissions. Try install. No good? Then try reformat from Tiger and install Leopard on clean HD. No luck. The next thing they would suggest is forwarding the issue to a specialist within applecare.

Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available from Apple. For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray). Expect to pay (possibly a lot) more than the Apple list price of $129.

Why upgrade from Panther to Tiger on G4 iMac?

I have two iMacs. I use a G5 recently upgraded from Panther to Leopard 10.5.5. My wife has a G4 with Panther 10.3.9.
Now that I have Leopard I have a Tiger install license available.
Are there good reasons to upgrade my wife's G4 to Tiger?
She uses it heavily for e-mail, internet, and MS Word.
She's networked to my G5 through Airport and we use printer sharing and file sharing.
Her G4 works great, but I'm wondering about security issues.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Apple is still releasing Security updates for Panther too, isn't it?
I think some of the Panther software is starting to show its age limitations for Internet capabilities, and things like iTunes for all the new iPods, etc. On one hand if you're not actually having problems then my feeling is an old computer best runs software designed for it. On the other hand I am not sure you would lose any functionality if you did upgrade. I think most Panther applications run on Tiger, the system requirements are pretty similar. It's not like when you upgrade to Leopard that you suddenly lose Classic support and it requires (demands?) a faster processor. From my personal perspective upgrading to Leopard really makes a big difference in capabilities both ways and may even be a negative upgrade if you run old software the way I do. Upgrading from Panther to Tiger didn't have any downsides and had several upsides in terms of software is still being brought out for Tiger.

Clean install my imac intel based machine

Hi folks,
I'm needing to replace the hard drive and clean install my intel based imac 17" (early 2006) machine and have only the osx 10.4 disk. Do i need another disk to begin this? I am rather new to this machine (I guess you could say newbie)
Anyone know if there is a step-by-step to replace this hard drive and then install the os. From what I've read there is supposed to be an install disk besides the osx disk?
Any help is appreciated.

Intel Macs as the others have said will not boot from the black retail Tiger install disks that look like this box , and will only boot from the gray disks which came with them.
Older Macs will boot from newer retail discs (to the spec limit of the operating system, for Tiger that means built-in Firewire and DVD drive*) than came with them. To find out which one came with which Mac, see this article:

Before doing this, I strongly recommend isolating the issues on your Mac. Erasing, or replacing the hard drive is rarely needed, except when it the hard drive is truly dead. If you need help isolating issues with your hard drive, we'd be happy to show you how.

Using Tiger on Intel iMacs

From what I have read on these posts, there are quite a few people who are upset at not being able to boot into Tiger on the new Intel iMacs and I include myself in this group. I understand that the reason this is not possible is that the firmware doesn't allow this, only allowing Leopard to be run on machines that originally shipped with Leopard installed. It seems that a fairly easy solution would be for Apple to come out with an optional firmware revision that would allow this. It sure would make a lot of people happy, people who don't want to run Leopard for whatever reasons or by people who would like the flexibility of a dual boot system on separate partitions like I was able to do on my old PPC iMac G5 and I had the best of both worlds. I would like to hear the thoughts of other users on this issue , maybe if enough people were interested in this, Apple would solve this problem by coming out with this optional firmware revision. They could even charge a small fee for it and I'd be willing to pay. What you think?

What Kappy said! All intel iMacs can run Tiger.
The new ALU iMacs were originally shipped with Tiger (before Leopard arrived)
and the hardware hasn't changed since then, so there's no technical obstacle
to running Tiger on your hardware.
However, you will need an ALU iMac compatible version of Tiger -- and that's
available ONLY on the install disks that came with the pre-Leopard ALU iMacs
(because there has never been an Intel-compatible "retail" version of Tiger).
Call Apple and order a "replacement set" of Tiger install disks for your iMac.
