If you can, run Disk Utlity and repair the disk. You can try rebooting normally, but I would just reinstall after quitting Disk Utility.

  • Macbook Pro cannot boot after Yosemite install

I just (tried) to upgrade to Yosemite (from latest version of Mavericks) on a brand new Macbook Pro. It installed the OS, I got to type my iCloud information etc - and I saw a glimpse of the desktop, but then:
I got the Black screen of death (the one where you can only reboot with text in different languages).
Then, when rebooting I got Apple logo + plus a progress bar  (see attachment)
And then a stop sign. (see attachment)
I have tried holding down power button and restart manually 5 times - no luck. The mac is stuck, and I cannot boot.
Please help - I need to get back to work.

Had the exact same problem on my Macbook Air.  Apple Support had me boot with Command-R and repaired disk in Disk Utility.  Everything seemed fine so they told me to reinstall, which I did.  After a few hours I went back to the screen and it asked me to type in my password. After that is tries to install some more and then I get the following message:
OS X could not be installed on your computer.
This core storage operation is not allowed on a sparse logical volume group.
Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again.
Each time I try to reboot I get the same message.

  • Cannot boot after recovering a FileVault 2 protected disk

I used Lion's new recovery HD partition to restore a four day old Time Machine backup. However, two days ago I enabled FileVault 2, which is probably the cause of the fact that I cannot boot my mac anymore. As the whole disk is locked, I cannot access the recovery partition either. Disk Utility of Snow Leopard install DVD doesn't support unlocking the partition, it is grayed out and therefore I'm not able to mount it. I honestly don't know yet how I can fix this problem. Can you help me?

Unlocking worked using the DVD, but I could never really make it bootable anymore. Reinstallation of Lion on the existing partition didn't work either. Just FYI, when trying to make the disk the startup disk it give me the following error: 'Building boot caches on boot helper partition failed'. The only solution that worked and was good enough for me was to delete the partition, reinstall lion and restoring time machine data on the new installation afterwards.

  • Cannot boot after a migration to systemd in OpenVZ

EDIT: I "solved" my problem, and I doubt this thread will ever help anybody. You're warned.
    Hello,
Earlier today, my Arch install that was still running with initscripts (and without the last filesystem/bash upgrade) suddently rebooted, and that broke a certain number of things (services weren't starting anymore, etc.). I figured I had waited too long before migrating to systemd for good, and therefore I followed the migration guide on the Wiki, added the "init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd" kernel parameter and rebooted again.
Sadly, ps -p 1 was still showing init instead of systemd. After a few more tries, I installed systemd-sysvcompat (thus replacing the sysvinit package), and rebooted again. That last reboot failed. Now OpenVZ stops suddently with the following messages:
    [root@ks /]# vzctl start 106
    Starting container ...
vzquota : (warning) Quota is running for id 106 already
    Container is mounted
    Adding IP address(es): ***
    Setting CPU units: 1000

/bin/bash: line 72: /bin/cp: No such file or directory
    ERROR: Can't copy file /etc/rc.conf
Unable to start init, probably incorrect template
    Container start failed
    Stopping container ...
    Container was stopped
vzquota : (error) Quota off syscall for id 106: Device or resource busy
    vzquota off failed [3]
I tried to chroot in the VM folder and reinstall sysvinit, but that was too late:
    pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/sysvinit-2.88-9-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
error: could not open file: /etc/mtab: No such file or directory
error: could not determine filesystem mount points
error: failed to commit transaction (unexpected error)
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
It looks like I can't use pacman in a chroot. The host OS is not running Arch so I cannot use pacman with the --root flag.
I'm running out of ideas. Any help would be really appreciated...
    Thank you.

The problem with the chroot options is that I don't have the root privileges on the host machine. I was only able to access that chroot thanks to a kind administrator, but I couldn't ask too much either.
OK, so I've done some Ugly Things, messed with the contents of the sysvinit package archive manually to get the right files at the right places, and eventually managed to boot my VM and get all the stuff working. I'm certainly not proud of myself, but at least things are working again for now. I'll do a clean reinstall later. Thank you for the suggestion, and sorry for the noise.
    Cheers.

  • Macbook cannot boot after Time Machine full restore

I successfully did a full restore of my Macbook and hit the restart button when prompted, but now my laptop cannot get past the first screen with the grey apple and the spinning gear.
    What gives?

Maybe I should ask a different question.
After doing this full restore would it be hazardous to my machine to force it to turn off (holding the power button for 5 secs) then trying to boot it up again?

  • How long does it take your mid 2010 iMac to boot after shutdown?

My imac has suddenly become alot slower upon boot up and i actually just bought this computer a few days ago. it's taking about 30+ seconds to boot up after a shutdown is that normal?

If you had a black out you may have damaged the machine if it wasn't hooked up to a battery backup. I would recommend you contact AppleCare (the number is in your owners manual) and see if they can help. One thing I would strongly advise is investing in a decent battery backup system, this will help with power surges and if you are in front of the computer when you have a black out provide enough battery power to do an orderly shutdown. If you get one that connects via USB to your computer you can also set some preferences such as what to do when the power comes back on.

  • Immediate boot after shutdown on 845pe max2

Got my brand new PC with a MSI 845PE MAX2 mainboard (MS-6704) in an AOPEN casing. Problem: if i select shutdown in WinXPpro the machine shuts down (even power-led is off). And then immediately it boots/starts again.
What could this be? I already removed all unnecessary cards, network connection, modem, second HDU, unplugged all USB devices. Turned off APM in the BIOS setting. Changed to an older type keyboard and mouse. Still same problem. All lastest drivers installed, lates BIOS (AMI 1.2) installed. All Xp service packs extra patches are installed.
Any suggestions? Switchg from S3 to S1 mode in ACPI standbystate doesnt make any difference. Turning off ACPI is a bad idea, as the machine wont boot XP anymore.
Pressing the on/off button the machine shuts down as expected and doesnt turn itself on anymore. Where can i find more info on the S1, S3 modes etc?

Indeed it was a faulty powersupply. I tried with a Qtec 400W and that one works perfectly. So thank you Assaf for the suggestion. I already tries all i could find in all newsgroups, just this was my last resort. Now to convince my supplier to get me a decent (quiet) powersupply!

  • Cannot boot after 10.7.5 update (MacPro1,1 mid-2006)

I have tried to do the update on my MacPro for the last few weeks.  Each time, it fails and after reboot, it goes into the Apple Utilty boot.  At that time, I need to restore a backup from my time machine.  I checked for RAID, and under system report, there is no RAID in the MacPro.
"This system doesn't contain any supported hardware RAID devices. If you installed hardware RAID devices, make sure you installed them properly."
What else do I need to do in order to get this update to work?  The computer is almost seven years old and is out of warranty and extended warranty.

  • Cannot Boot after software update!

I just updated to the latest Mac update and after restarting it would not boot! The white screen appears with the loading bar for a few seconds (approx 15) and it restarts again, and it keeps on happening on and on again.
I tried using the Disk Utility (via installation DVD) to Repair my Mac HD but with no avail, it even says my HD is apparently OK. Then I came across something saying to delete all Cache maybe that helps (which made sense at the time because I had a Dock problem a few days ago and deleting the Cache fixed it) so I did.. and for some reason now I can't even use Disk Utility anymore.. it won't read my Keyboard shortcuts (pressing C during startup does nothing, so as any other shortcut I've tried [cmd+s, cmd+v, shift])
Please help! I need my laptop urgently!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Reboot into the Safe mode - hold down Shift on reboot. At the login screen click restart.
This will clear caches and run fsck on the HD.
See if the system reboots normally after this.

  • Cannot boot after burning the Lion install image to DVD or USB

No Lion install has been performed after the download. I tried burning the image InstallESD.dmg to a DVD, and also restored the image to a USB drive. The results are the same when I hold down the option key upon restart and select either the DVD or the USB drive. I get the gray linen screen while the little circle of dashes spins, and two pictures alternate forever. A picture of a trackpad (with an arrow pointing to the power button) followed by a picture of what looks like a cpu tower, again with a switch in the upper right corner looking like a power button. My trackpad and Mac Pro are obviously powered on, so what is wrong? Any ideas?

Works fine following these DVD boot directions made for the same model of Mac, perhaps your disk isn't good or you missed something.

  • Equium A300D-16C. not booting after shutdown.

Please, this is a problem i seem not to understand. I have been using my Equium A300d-16c laptop without no problem for over a year until yesterday's evening. i was installing a software(nokia PC suite) which prompted for a restart. the shutting down was normal and for it to restart was a problem. it displays nothing but a blank screen. It is evident it does not boot as when i press the power button it goes of immediately. Only the power indicator is on. Another thing i notice is that the DVD-ROM reads any disc put inside but there is no display of any sort.
My first reaction was that it may be overheating, so i cleaned the cooling vents and blew away dusts from all compartments. but still the problem persists. Please i seek to know what may be the problem before taking it to for repairs. Help Needed. Thanks.

Thanks. There is nothing displayed on the screen. it does not seem to boot into anything, as the powere goes off immediately when the power button is pressed. I have tried to change the ram modules, but still the same problem. i dont know what kind of hardware failure could cause this as it was working fine untill the shutdown. Thanks for the concern.
