TP 770ED, Win XP, Fn Keys

I am contemplating installing Win XP on my 770ED. It has 425MB memory and is running Win2K now
My question is, will the Fn keys work with XP? Some seem to only partially work now with Win 2K
Any thoughts and suggestions appreciates.
P.S. Has anyone rebuilt a 770 battery? If was it worth the hassle or is paying $60 for a new one the way to go?

Hi!
On the Toshiba website you can find the installation instructions document if you search for your notebook. Use this list as a recommended driver installation order. So can make sure that will work well on your notebook and the FN keys too.
Check the Toshiba website:

Good luck

  • How to find win 8 product key in bios

hi just got hp envy 17 model 7255dx,but i was using different dv7 before new one,and i had ssd hard drive which i just wanted to format from the scratch because of different hardware on previous mashine,so i have now only ssd hard drive installed and i install trial win 8 in order to activate later so there is no sticker with the product key any more on the back of the laptop,i read someware that key is in bios so how i can find he key?
edit: i tried belarc advisor and he gave me the product key but when i type in order to activate the windows i get a message  the product key you entered appears to be default product key and cant be used to activate this edition of windows please enter different key

Well hp is no help at all I was on the phone with Microsoft and hp had both remotely hook up to my laptop to no avail, and had several chats with hp and Microsoft support on line. Support runs on a script and if your issue is not on that scrip they are reading from good luck!  Here is what happened with my laptop, Product name: HP ENVY TS 17 Notebook PC, Product number: E4S14UA#ABA, Serial number: {Private Information Removed} windows preinstalled. I updated to windows pro to get media center and worked fine, and reformatted with the disk I ordered from hp and worked fine 2 times. Went and up dated to windows 8.1 and I did not like it could not uninstall it so I reformatted with the hp disk once more, well then the lap top would not activate  and to find out the key was blocked by Microsoft, called Microsoft once more and they said they block keys once in a while, and then they give new keys to people who purchase a key from them, and that I needed to get one from my pc manufacture which is hp. In the numerous chats emails ect. hp could not understand that concept, and was down to repeating themselves in chat, copying what they just typed and pasting it in the chat box lol I do not know if they were not thinking or that's all they had.  When hp had started to copy and paste  repeat text in chat I told them I was done stick me with a fork and ended the chat. The reply person sent an email saying I would have to send my laptop in and they would have to take it apart and work on the system board for a key just a key. So I saved them money on shipping and tech support, I paid 119.99 I think it was may been 119.00 and send hp several notices to pay, I will try a few more times I have the address to their billing in CA  and will send a few there. If I get no place I will take them to small claims court, and if hp wants to pay someone to show up and loose for 119.00 then great. With the new key laptop works fine. Good luck with hp lol.

  • Deleted back-up partition - install WIN media with key?

Hi! My acer back-up partition is deleted. However, I've backed up the key from the BIOS prior to deleting it. Can I download the Win 10 ISO from Microsoft and install with the same key?  If not, how do I get around it? I have a legit key/purchase but the original backup partition/system is deleted.

OK so you have your key written down on a piece of paper.....just in case you need it. Please post if it does require you to enter the key.  According to the instructions, if you haven't activated Windows 10 yet, it will require the key the first time since you're aren't going through Windows update. But I'm not sure if that's the case since I haven't tried it.  Why don't you just go through windows update? https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Edit:  You don't need your backup partition to update through windows update.  If you update through windows update, you won't need to enter your key. Why is it you think you need your backup partition in order to go to windows update and upgrade to windows 10?  If you don't know how to find windows update on your computer, you can search for it on your computer.

  • Win 7 COA Key from VISTA Upgrade

I have a W500. It came with Windows Vista. I was given by Lenovo the Windows 7 Upgrade Media from Lenovo. I have upgraded to Windows 7.
I have the Vista COA Key. I want to do a fresh install of Windows 7. I will need a Windows 7 COA Key.
Is my current Windows 7 (from Lenovo Upgrade media) Key the same as the original VISTA COA Key?
If not, what key do I use and how do I get it. Magic jelleybean or other key finder programs?
Or do I have to call MS?
Thank you for your patience and help.

You have a "Volume Licence" version of Windows 7 Pro (that is, it is specifically *NOT* an OEM licence version). Volume Licence versions are used by large scale manufacturers of Windows compaible hardware, and do not have individual keys in the loaded image. Any key you find in a loaded Volume Licence image is pretty much useless for any purpose other than using the VL version on the system platform with the appropriate SLIC in its BIOS.
Lenovo provided media for you that will load that Volume Licenced version on your ThinkPad, which adheres to Microsoft's conditions for SLIC 2.* based licences. If you want to do something else with Win 7 Pro other than the standard Volume Licence usage, then you are basically on your own.
The quickest way load an SP1 version is to buy a retail licence and load that. Otherwise you need to load the initial non-SP version from the Lenovo disks and apply the SP1 update afterwards.

  • Satellite L670-1EE - reinstallation of Win 7 - serial key not readable

    Hi,
    I bought a Toshiba Satellite L670-1EE Jan. 2011
Now the System completely crashed and I need to reinstall from scratch.
My Problem is, that the first 5 digits of the Microsoft Product Key are not readable.
Is there any Chance to get the Key or can I use a special Toshiba image to recover?
I can not access the installed windows, startup fails, I tried a recovery with a win DVD but it did not work, so I need to reinstall.

    > My Problem is, that the first 5 digits of the Microsoft Product Key are not readable.
This key cannot be used in connection with new Windows 7
This is a OEM key which belongs to the Toshiba image. Mostly such keys dont work.
The point is that Toshiba preinstalled system was already activated within the Toshiba image.
It does not need to be activated after the recovery procedure.
So if you want to use own Windows system, you have to purchase the license from Microsoft.
In case you want to use the Toshiba image, you should use the Toshiba Recovery disk which you probably did not create in the past. Right?
In such case there is another option: you can order such disk from here:

  • Win 7 Product key not working

    Hi!
I downloaded an ISO of Windows 7 Home Premium from windows website and made a clean install on my Lenovo IdeaPad Y580. Before re-installing I made a screenshot of my product key , which was shown by application Everest Ultimate. During the re-install process I typed my product key. Installation successful.
But only yesterday I realized, there might be a problem: Start -> My Comp -> properties -> Windows Activation, there is written, that "15 days to activate. Activate Windows now". I tried to activate, but I got a message: "The Windows 7 Home Premium product key you typed is invalid for activation".
After that I checked the product key, and here is the 2nd problem: the product key shown by Everest and the key on the underside of the laptop ARE NOT EQUAL.
I tried to type both, none of them was working. And I have no idea, why... Can somebody help me, what's wrong, why isn't it working?
(some info: Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 with pre-installed Windows 7 Home Premium, the only change I made was the changing of the SSD from 32 to 64 GB . But I don't think that could be the reason...)
    Solved!

Welcome to the Forum kislovi and kherring7383 !
kislovi,  you do not have to purchase any special Windows 7 media once you have a valid Windows 7 Home Premium key on the back of your laptop. You can download a copy of Windows 7 and use your key, as you are attempting to do. I had a similar situation when I purchased my W500. It came with a 160GB hard drive which had Windows 7 Pro 32-bit installed and activated. I wanted to replace the 160GB hard drive with a 500GB one. So I used a key finder program to view the key and copied it down carefully. After doing a fresh installation of Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, I tried to activate using the key I had recovered. It was not accepted. As mentioned, it was probably a Volume Licensing key of some sort which Lenovo uses  to do mass installations. Then I noticed I had a Windows 7 Pro C.O.A. key on the back of the laptop which was different from the one reported by the key finder. I tried that key and was able to activate Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.
You may use any disc (OEM, retail, upgrade, VL) with Windows 7. It is not "media-specific." You may also download a legitimate copy of Windows 7 from Microsoft, burn it to a DVD and use it with an O.E.M. C.O.A. key. I have done all of these things. During the installation process, the software will customize itself to the version that corresponds to the key.
Windows 7 media is different from Windows XP media. For example,  I have retail and O.E.M. Windows XP discs. When doing a fresh installation on a machine which has an XP C.O.A. on the back, I have to use my O.E.M. XP installation disc. When I wish to use a retail Windows XP key I have purchased, I must use a retail XP installation disc. This is not true for Windows 7. I can use a retail version or O.E.M. version to do a fresh installation using the WIndows 7 C.O.A. on the back of a machine. I can verify with absolute certainty that it works. This is not a matter of O.E.M. versus Retail media. There is some other issue the OP is facing...
A few questions for kislovi: Do you wish to install the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium? If you have at least 3GB of memory, you should go for the 64-bit version. I think you will find my post about the Benefits of a Windows 7 64-bit Operating System informative. The same key can be used to activate either the 32-bit or 64-bit version of the product.
What is the exact file name for the version of Windows 7 which you downloaded? Here are the official Microsoft file names for Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit ("x86") and 64-bit ISO:
    • Windows 7 Home Premium (x86) - X17-58996     • Windows 7 Home Premium (x64) - X17-58997
(Note: These are the file names for the English versions. Other language versions have different file names).
What is the 8-digit file name you see on the C.O.A. on the back of your laptop? (For example, "X _ _- _ _ _ _ _"). Where did you download your copy of Windows 7 from? Here are 2 official Microsoft download link locations: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/  and  http://www.mydigitallife.info/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-from-digital-river/
Double-check that you downloaded from an official Microsoft location, and that it's the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium and not Windows 7 Pro or some other version you downloaded by accident. If you still have difficulty, then your key may have been activated before, used on another laptop or some other issue exists. Let us know how you do.
Have a great day. (I do not work for Lenovo)

  • Win 8 product key and a pre-installed Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13, how to get it?

    Hello
I live in Finland and I have read previously that these Windows 8 product keys are now linked somehow with motherboard´s BIOS systems, so we actually don´t need to know our product codes anymore.
Well, in some cases we do need to know them.
My Windows asked me once if I want to install a new version to get some new features, the same procedure can be launched by going to your Control panel, selecting System and selecting the top option where it says you could update to a new version to unlock new features.
This requires a 25-digit Windows 8 product key. Which we Yoga 13 owners do not have, as it is somewhere in the BIOS, hidden from us.
How can I give my product key to this field if I do not know it?
    1. Called to Microsoft
I tried contacting Microsoft Finland about this, but their automatic phone service stated it was none of their concern as it is a pre-installed system, and therefore I need to contact Lenovo straight. I tried to get a person to talk to, but I got none. Always an automatic service. I called to their switch (is this the right word?) to ask if I could get a person to talk to, but the number she forwarded me to always got to an automatic robot, again.
    2. Lenovo Customer support
Well, Lenovo directs customers to this forum from their customer service web page, so I hope some Lenovo employee can finally answer this question, please. I value customer service, and getting an answer from another forum using customer is not really customer service when they suggest using some 3rd party software to maybe get your windows 8 key with a method that may not be the most fancy way if asked from Microsoft. Lenovo Finland in Espoo (near Helsinki, contacts here: http://www.fonecta.fi/yritykset/Espoo/792365/Lenovo+Finland) has a phone number that hangs up every time you try to call it, I tried 4 times. This is getting awkward, you know.
    Thank you,
    - Tapio

When they ask for that key, they are expecting an upgrade key to something like Windows 8 Pro or addition of a Media Center Key. They don't expect you to use the same Key you are already using. It won't work.
Anyhow, take a look at this:

  • Thinkpad Yoga - Clean install with Win 8.1 disc and embedded product key

    Hello everyone,
I purchased a Thinkpad Yoga that comes along with Win 8.1 and embedded product key.
Will it be possible to plug-in an external drive and install Win 8.1 from a Win 8.1-disc? BUT I don’t want to use the key that comes with the disc, but the key embedded in the bios.
This is my girlfriends Windows 8.1 disc and license. Nevertheless I could use it for the clean install.
But I'm not sure, if the original key from my Yoga will work then.
    Thanks
    Hutson

I guy on Youtube made a rough tutorial.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lI8AnNBIlLQ
    Englisch subtitles available
In the comments he suggests, to download the Iso with anouther win-8.1-key - no matter which one - and to install the system clean. In his opinion the system will get the key from the hardware. He is writing, that there is just a universal iso. So it's no problem to download an iso with another key, even if your system is a Home-Edition and you download it with a Pro-Key.
    I will try this.

  • Blocked Win 8 Bios product key

    Hi,
I bought a new Dell Inspiron with a Bios Win 8 product key.  the problem is that for some reason, this key is blocked.  Dell gave me a new key which works but every 15 mins or so, the msg to activate windows comes up.  When I checked in system,
I can see that Windows somehow goes back to the blocked bios key.  I have to activate it every 15 mins!! How can I solve this? Can I replace the blocked bios key with the new key I have which works?
I tried Formatting (factory state) with recovery disks, through the Dell recovery console and also through the Windows Control Panel.  All to no avail.
    thanks
    Nick

    Hi,
you need to get Dell to fix this, as the manufacturer of the machine, they have the necessary OEM tools.

  • Recognizing XF86* keys in Wine

    Hey guys,
I have a Razer Naga mouse that has a numpad on the side of it which is detected as a keyboard. I have a custom keymap that maps these keys as follows
    default
    partial alphanumeric_keys modifier_keys
    xkb_symbols "evan-custom" {
    include "us"
    # Forward and back on numpad 1 and 3
    key <KP1> { [ XF86_Back ] };
    key <KP3> { [ XF86_Forward ] };
I've also recently been playing World of Warcraft using Wine, and would like to map the 1 and 3 numpad buttons on the side of my mouse to something in game. However the game doesn't seem to detect these the XF86 keys.
I was curious if there was a way to make wine recognize these keys, or possible a way to use wine to remap them in the wine environment?
Another thought I had would be to somehow map these keys to mouse buttons 8 and 9 which cause the same generic "forward" "back" behavior. I could do this by mapping the buttons to a `xdotool click {8,9}` command, but would prefer not to have to do it that way.
    Any ideas?

I'm sure my xbindkeys is running and is working properly since other keys work perfectly.  One of the keys that works perfectly is my XF86AudioMute key.  That is what is so puzzling.
To answer (3), that code is what comes up with I use the -k option with xbindkeys to get the key code
To answer (4), I get the names from using the -k option with xbindkeys

  • Invalid Product Key when upgrading to Win 8.1

I just upgraded from Windows 8 (which came pre-installed on my Twist) to Windows 8.1. This is supposed to be a free upgrade and all reviews recommend people do the upgrade.
However, my product key now is showing up as "blocked" and I can't activate Windows. I called Microsoft and all they can tell is that the key is invalid. I called Lenovo and all they can tell is that the keys they have only work on Windows 8.0, they don't have Windows 8.1 keys.
So, now I need to roll back to Windows 8.0, but the only way to do it is to do a clean re-install. Obviously, a huge problem, and I'll loose all my progams and settings.
Lenovo should let all their customers know that they SHOULD NOT upgrade to Windows 8.1 right now. And they need to find a solution to this ASAP.
I have 30 days when Windows will continue working, but after that it will lock up.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

No, I did not make any changes to either hardware or installed software. The upgrade process was the usual "go to MS website, click Update, wait for download to finish and start the update".
I did contact both MS tech support and Lenovo tech support. Neither could help. Lenovo tech support (I talked to them twice) was the one who told me that Win 8 product keys they have will not work with Win 8.1. They told me that I would need to reinstall Win8 from scratch and sent me the recovery disc set.
I was actually able to resolve this now. What I think happened is that Win8 key was coded somewhere in the laptop's bios and the new version of Windows was reading it incorrectly. There is a program that lets you extract OEM Windows product keys: : http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/29789-RW-Everything-Latest-News The program gives you the correct key. Once I entered that, I was able to activate Windows.
