TP T61p TV Toolbox Rescue & Recovery

I have a TP T61p with Windows XP SP3 fully patched.
I'm trying to use ThinkVantage toolbox (which is fully up-to-date) and invoke the Enhanced Back-Up and Restore feature. When I choose the Rescue and Recovery application the system hangs or the back up does not start.
Any ideas/assistance is appreciated.
(B^>)-]=[

Thanks for the feedback. What you wrote makes sense.
This is now what shows up on my TP  T61p (using XP commands).
When I right click on My Computer, Left click on Manage, I select Disk Management.
In the bottom right of the window that opens this is what I see on my computer.
- C: drive which is 142 GB formatted NTFS called "Healthy System"
- "SERVICEV001" partition that is 6.7GB formatted FAT32 "Healthy (EISA Configuration)"
So is that ServiceV001 my R&R back-up on my hard drive? If so, doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of a back-up if my laptop crashes? Your thoughts are appreciated!
Thanks again!

  • T61p Rescue & Recovery problem

Clean install Windows 7 Prof (64-bit), used  Lenovo system updater as well as Microsoft updates.  Everything is fine except Rescue & Recovery. The program will not install and says I need "C++ 2005 redistribution (x64)".  I checked and this is present, along with updates.  Any suggestions?

    Hi,
Just to double check, are you sure you have the x64 version installed?  It's a fairly common problem to have the 32 bit version installed but not the 64 bit.
If you really have the x64 installed - never mind...

  • T42 rescue & recovery

    Hi all,
    I've just purchased my first thinkpad - a refurbished T42. It's nice!
I'm preparing to wipe the whole drive and install linux and decided to make a set of rescue & recovery discs. I used the IBM utility, which created the following:
    - 1 disc: ibm rescue & recovery with rapid restore
    - 6 discs: ibm product recovery
I decided to test it just for fun and was dismayed, upon pressing "restore factory contents", to be greeted by the following:
The IBM Product Recovery function has been removed from this system.
    wtf?
The BIOS setting for the recovery partition is "Normal" (as opposed to disabled, or password-protected)
...and when I looked at the partition, it looked like a normal FAT32 partition with about 4 gigs of files.
So... what to do? Should I back up the active windows partition (as opposed to the rescue partition) before deleting windows?
    Thanks!
    ~David.

I think the key thing with backups is not to trust anybody.  Backup at least 2 independant ways - Maybe ghost to DVD and factory backup and file copy - thats 3.
I think I struck this problem once.  The backup partition has to be on the hard drive and in the right partition - maybe the first primary partition or second primary - I forget.
You are best to ghost that partition separately too.
If you have your XP code you can always build it from scratch by downloading all the drivers.  Takes me about a day to build up a system like this though.

  • Rescue & Recovery issues trying to transfer files

I have an annoying issue.  My lappy woke up this morning with the CI.DLL error and I get the error screen saying that this was deleted and I'm unable boot.  Tried booting in safe and still did not work.  So I went into rescue & recovery to restore and I wanted to transfer some files I had on my hard drive that were not backed up.  I have an external hard drive and I've done this before; transferring files before I do a complete restore.  I tried it this morning, selected the files I want transferred and then it pulls up a screen that says 0% complete, files could not be transferred??? Any ideas?  Would this be caused by the error above?  Thanks.

    wmarkw, welcome to the forum,
It is unlikely that someone with a solution will browse by in 37 minutes, this is a peer to peer forum. I have moved your post here as your issue is more R&R than hardware related it will hopefully be seen by more members who use R&R.
As a thought, are you able to remove the hard drive and copy the files you need by attaching it to another system?

  • URGENT Rescue & Recovery "Previous Version" Error.

I am resending my post as I experienced the Explorer 9 incompatibility problem.
My hard drive crashed recently and I lost all my data and applications.  I have attempted to perform a restore by running Rescue & Recovery 4.31.  Unfortunately, all my attempts to do so have resulted in the following error:
“The Restore could not be executed because the selected backup was taken with a previous version of Rescue & Recovery.”
There are a couple of data files I would like to recover.  I am running Windows 7 x64 w/ SP1 and I do not recall ever upgrading Rescue & Recovery.
If anyone is aware of a solution, please advise.  Thank you very kindly in advance.
    Cheers,
    Ken

I was previously able to help a member recover files, restore backups in this thread. The circumstances were, going on the limited information here, somewhat different but there may be some ideas which you may help toward a possible solution.

  • Rescue & Recovery doesn't react

Hi, I'm new here (and a somewhat noob regarding this computer stuff)
However... lately I discovered some problem with my rescue & recovery
My Thinkvantage Toolbox stated that I should make an Backup with rescue & recovery, so I started through toolbox the program but it somewhat lagged during the backup process so I forced it to close down (as normal abort didn't want to succeed)
since then it is kind of broken.. I can't start it anymore when I click on rescue & recovery (no reaction whatsoever of the program, just nothing like I didn't click anything) also the automatic backup every month won't ask me anymore (toolbox says next scheduled backup is march 24, which was the one when I did the mentioned above)
normally there was a monthly scheduled backup (at least it asked I rarely did it because it takes up so much space)
So, what did happen? How to fix this? Should I re-install R&R (how so)?
    My R&R is version 4.21.0016.00
I have a thinkpad SL500 and windows XP

    Hi,
in case you want to be sure, that none of your backups will get harmed, you need to use the exact same version of RnR, that you have installed on your system.
So you can either use the setups file, that is located on your HDD , or donwload and install the same version, as you are using.
    Cheers

  • Rescue & Recovery - Multiple Partitions

    Greetings,
I have my T61P setup to dual boot Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 and Gentoo Linux.  Grub is my boot loader.  I restored using Rescue & Recovery 4.1.  The Windows partition looks fine, but the other partitions were wiped clean and setup as FAT16 file systems.  Natually I was a bit upset about losing my working Linux system.
Is there any way to prevent this from happening again?
    Thanks very much,
    Scott

hello scott welcome to the forums!
if you want to restore your pc using R&R i guess it may be impossible for you to use all the paritions without wiping them clean..you cannot install a dual boot system(usually) if you re-format it again..its fine if you are using vista you can resize and install linux but the better option for you is to use acronis true image utility it should work great on all your partitions(all of them will be imaged)
    Cheers and regards,

  • Unable to Access Rescue & Recovery for Factory Restore

    Hi!
    Problem: Can't access {Rescue & Recovery (F11?)} on startup.
Keep in mind that my "Thinkvantage Toolbox" freezes everytime I try to launch it while I'm logged in. I can access the BIOS but when I try to either press F11 to get to Rescue and Recovery I get an error asking me if I wanna do a windows resume or a stuck key, same goes for the ThinkVantage button on startup that is.
Is it all linked to the fact that when I'm logged in and try to open ThinkVantage Toolbox it freezes? I tried to update everything from Lenovo and did nothing changed.
    Help  ! Thanks!!

    Hi,
I assume your problem is that when you press F11 at system start up, you can entering RnR PDA as expected?
If this is the issue, I need your help to provide below info for further analyze.Thanks.
    1.
under windows cmd line with admin privilege:
    bcdedit /enum all > c:\bcd.txt
=> this will generate a file named bcd.txt under C:\,  please collect it and send to me.
    2. Get me the disk partition layout info by below way:
        steps:
         a. run diskpart.exe with admin privilege
         b.  type list vol  and enter
         c.  type sel disk 0 and enter ( if there are more than one hard disks please choose the disk number of which C partition lies)
         d. type list par and enter
         e. get me a picture of all of the output..
    3.  find bmgr32.exe from " C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Lenovo\BMGR" or 32bit system from " C:\Program Files\Common Files\Lenovo\BMGR".
         run this command : bmgr32.exe /info > c:\bmgr32.txt and get me the "C:\bmgr32.txt"

  • Restoration of Lenovo T500 to new hard drive using Rescue & Recovery

I bought a new hard drive and I have been having a frustrating time trying to migrate the image of my hard disk to the new drive. When I bought my T500, it came with Windows Vista Business 64, but I have since downgraded it to Windows XP Pro.
Up to now, I was faithfully using Norton Ghost 14 to back up my drive to my USB Western Digital MyBook Mirror Edition 1TB drive. However, I get errors when I try to restore the image to my new drive (and I will be posting that issue to Norton's forum).
While I have not completely given up on Norton Ghost, I decided I might be able to restore the image using the Rescue & Recovery software. I downloaded and installed R&R 4.21.0016.00. After I installed it, I backed up my system to the MyBook Mirror Edition.
I then shut down the computer and put in the new hard drive (a Western Digital Scorpio Black WD5000BEKT). I used a disc that I burned from the ThinkVantage Create Recovery Media utility to boot the machine. While the environment loads just fine, it does not detect my USB hard drive. NOTE: I didn't make my USB drive bootable, I only stored the backup files there.
I tried going into the PC Doctor utility and discovered that there is an "unidentified" USB device under the mouse section, which I presume is the MyBook.
I have hunted high and low for an answer to this both on Lenovo and Western Digital's web sites, but I can't seem to come up with a reason why my drive is not visible to R&R, or a way to load the WD drivers into this recovery environment. I found http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkVantage-Technologies/Rescue-and-Recovery-does-not-recognize-USB-driv..., and I followed the instructions - there is a minus sign next to the USB boot device in the bios. However, saving the bios and rebooting the computer (as the post suggested) does nothing to change that setting.
I have tried upgrading the bios to the latest version, but still no luck detecting the USB drive.
I am thinking about resorting to buring a backup of my entire system to DVDs and then restoring using the DVD drive. However, since my current backup is 60GB, I imagine that will take 15 discs.
Whether that fixes my immediate problem or not (that is, transferring to my new drive), I still don't have an answer for a long term solution in case of hard drive failure. Ghost is not working with my current configuration. And if I use R&R for backup, it will do me no good if I cannot get it to connect to my USB drive to recover. Furthermore, as far as I can tell there is no way to burn an existing restoration point to DVD - meaning I would have absolutely no way to restore if my hard drive failed.
I have been working on this migration for 3 full days already, and since I had my system images backed up I thought that this would be a trivial task. Any suggestions at this point would be welcomed.

I'm experiencing the same problem. I wanted to restore single files from an USB disk. Two larger file (500MB each) went through that process quite fast (3 minutes). A folder with many small files takes forever.
What's strange is that my notebook hard drive is at 100% activity all the time, while the USB disk is hardly read.

  • E30 - Rescue & Recovery "Rejuvenate" still at 0% after 20 hours

    Dear Sirs,
How long can R&R "Rejuvenate" stay at "System restore in progress... 0%" before I should begin to worry?  I started a Rejuvenate on my E30 about 20 hours ago, and for at least 19 of those hours it's been sitting at 0%.  (And yes, I'm beginning to worry!)
    In terms of details:
    1)  I purchased this E30 from Lenovo in August 2011.  It's a fairly basic machine with two 500GB HDDs in RAID 1; the drive is about 27% full; and I've done regular backups (to a 500 Lenovo USB external hard drive) via Rescue & Recovery without ever encountering any problems.
    2)  I have never defragmented the disc (at least until this current "Rejuvenate" attempt).
    3)  Just prior to the Rejuvenate, I (by way of a test) did a full Restore (via Rescue and Recovery) of my machine to a backup I made earlier in the day.  This Restore proceeded without at hitch, and took about 90 minutes.  The machine worked normally after the Restore, and had correctly reverted to the state it was in when I made the backup -- so everything seemed fine.
    4)  I then restarted the machine, restarted R&R, and selected the Rejuvenate option.  The first Rejuvenate steps seemed to go well:  first came a small incremental backup, and then the "Capturing current settings" step proceeded pretty rapidly.  The next step (according to the "Rescue and Recovery Progress" window) is "Restoring Files" -- and the machine has stayed on this step for the past 19+ hours.
    5)  On my screen, there are two windows atop a "Lenovo -- Rescue and Recovery 4 --  ThinkVantage Technologies" background.  One window is "Rescue and Recovery Progress", and inside that window is the word "Rejuvenation", and then five steps.  The first step is "Capturing current settings", and there's a green check mark next to it.  The second step is "Restoring files", and there's a blue arrow pointing to it.   Three more steps (e.g., "Apply saved system-wide settings", etc.) sit below, without any markings. The other window is "Progress", on which there's a completely empty horizontal bar graph, below which are the words "System restore in progress... 0%".  I've tried Alt-Tab, and no other windows are visible anywhere.
    6)  The machine is not frozen:  I can move the mouse icon freely, and can drag the two progress windows about the screen.
    7)  The HDD LED on the front panel of the E30 tower emits a brief low-power flash at precise 1-second intervals (question:  is the machine polling the disc or the optical drive?).  At various times in the day, this LED has briefly but fully brightened in the random, flashing way that it does when the discs are being written to (e.g., about an hour ago it was starting to seem normal, and I was beginning to feel relieved) -- but now it's reverted to its 1-second dim flashing, without any bright bursts at all.
    8)  The red light on the external USB Drive is mostly continuous bright red, but this light flickers randomly and frequently, as if the external drive is actually doing something.  These flickers, however, can happen (and usually do happen) without any corresponding change in the E30's front panel LED's regular 1-second "ticks".
    9)  Unfortunately, the above info pretty much exhausts all my knowledge about computers, and I have no access to an IT expert (I'm a freelance writer who has to run CAD models on occasion, and this E30 sits in my bedroom "office").  I've searched the Lenovo forums for threads on this "0%" issue, and apart from the Alt-Tab suggestion to look for hidden windows, I haven't understood anything in them (sorry).  Also, in hindsight, I wish I had put a backup on something other than the external USB drive -- e.g., presumably if I do something drastic like turn the E30 off, I corrupt both the E30 drive and the external drive backup files, yes?
And, so.....am I in trouble?  Have I done something wrong?  And if so, is there any way I can get my computer working again?  Or is R&R working properly, and the Defragmentation part of the Rejuvenate is just taking a long time (because I've used the E30 for over three years without ever defragmenting or rejuvenating)?  Any advice (or even reassurance) would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you very much (and Congratulations on the new P-series Thinkstations -- I saw them when I logged on to compose this query;  may you please all have great success with the new machines!).
    Yours, - W
P.S. -- in the time it's taken to compose this query, the front panel HDD LED has begun to occasionally flash again (random, intermittent, full power flashes, separated by long periods of 1-second "ticks") -- so things are sort of working, yes?  =)

Right -- the "Rejuvenate" process has finally ended, 43.5 hours after I started it.  =)
(The user interface is really confusing -- even after I thought things were done, windows would spontaneously pop up and tell me to reboot the computer;  it took 4 reboots before a final pop up said "Rejuvenation Successful"....)
    Questions for the Experts:
This was a painful process:  among other things, I've been minus my workstation for two solid days, and at no point did I have any idea when and if the computer would begin to work again.  Hence....
    1)  Is "Rejuvenation" worth the trouble?  Is this something you'd recommend people use, or should I avoid the option in the future?
    2)  Should I regularly Defragment my disk?  The Rejuvenation program has now set my Defragmenter scheduler to come on every week (previously, the Defragmenter was turned off).  Is regular disk defragmentation something you would recommend?
    3)  How is "Rejuvenation" different from a simple Backup + Defragmentation?  Is the Rejuvenation somehow more thorough or more effective?  I ask because of how painful the Rejuvenation process was this time around:  if it really doesn't do anything the Defragment tool doesn't, then I'd prefer to avoid it in the future.
Sorry for the naive newbie questions(!) -- I just happen to love my E30 (which I specced out according to recommendations given to me on this forum, three years ago -- thank you for all the help!), and I'd like to maintain it properly.  =)
Thank you in advance for any recommendations!
                   - W

  • Error while trying to install Rescue & Recovery 4.3 on Lenovo 3000 N500

    Well, hello to everyone.
I hope you can understand this, because my English is not very good.
So, let's get to the point.
Recently, I tried to install Rescue & Recovery on my Lenovo 3000 N500. But when everything is nearing completion, I get the message that states: "Rescue & Recovery can only be installed on some systems."
Please explain me a bit this "in some systems," because I've had before the Rescue & Recovery. I do not understand why I can not install it now.
I appreciate your help in advance

    Hi,
the key point is that RnR application can be installed only on some systems (especially ThinkPads)
This is due to the fact, that these systems have some functions, like the F11 key, hardcoded in the machine and can thus use the full quality of this application.
Unfortunately system like yours is not supported by this application, so you will not be able to install, nor use it.
    Cheers

  • Launching Rescue & Recovery from a Command Line

Question - I would like to know how I can launch Rescue & Recovery from a command line.
Issue that is prompting the question -  My laptop was sitting in my computer bag overnight. The battery was fully charged. I BELIEVE that it was in suspend mode at the time. When I opened it in the morning, there was a message on the screen saying that a backup had not completed successfully. I then noticed that the battery had run down completely.
My Plan - I would like to launch Rescue & Recovery (as well as the Defrag utility) from Windows Task Scheduler. If I do, then all schedule tasks will be launched and controlled using the same process. Windows Task Scheduler also provides two key scheduling criteria that the IBM Rescue & Recoverry or the IBM Maintenance Manager utilities do not provide -
#1 - Run this task only when the PC is on AC power.
#2 - Run this task ony when the computer is idle (so that it doesn't slow down the PC if I happen to be working on it)
     Background Concerns -
    - Having a backup job automatically start when the computer is in my computer bag will run down my battery when I least expect it.
    - The PC may could also be damaged due to overheating, since the sides of the computer bag  block the ventilation holes.
    Additional Info
    - If I go to the ThinkVantage Productivity Center and select the Quick Link for "Backup Now" this will indeed launch a backup on demand. I assume that selecting this option is calling a specific executable file.
    - However, the only two applicable executable files that I see in the C:\Program Files\Lenovo\Rescue and Recovery directory are "mr_gui.exe" and "wizrr.exe". Both of these files launch an interface that requires the user to make a selection. As a result, it doesn't look as if either of these files would work for unattended operation, unless there is some sort of switch that I can put in that will automatically start the backup process.
    - I called the support line (only once so far), but that particular rep did not know of any way to launch Rescue & Recovery other than from the standard R&R user interfaces.
     Any help is greatly appreciated,
    Mathew

The correct way to invoke a JSP is to make a request to the Server.
Normally you would use your browser to do this.
On a unix system, you can use the wget command to invoke a url without using a browser.

  • Terrible bug with Rescue & Recovery 4.5

    Hello all,
Just a notice to all users, I had a terrible bug with Lenovo Rescue & Recovery. Everything went well, until the restore: I have one SSD for system and one micro sata for data. The system drive had two partitions (created by Lenovo at the origin, a system (C) partition and a Lenovo recovery partition). When I tried to restore a previous version of the system drive that I backuped with Lenovo R&R, it restored the system on C: and restored the recovery partition... on D:, erasing all my data! In addition, the MBR was missing on the system. And cherry on the cake, I could not use the backup a second time when I tried, because R&R did not find the backup again.
I was particularly disappointed because as the backup went so smoothly, I did not do a data backup before restore, my previous backup being three days old, so I lost three days of work.
I had previous bad experience with Windows backup & restore, windows software could not find the restore, but at least it did not erase data.
    Thierry

I agree with the TERRIBLE bug comment.
    It amounts to:
    (1) restore Q partition
    (2) C drive.
I will repeat my other posts. I ordered pc, with 320 GB and 160 Gb Hdd.  From factory, C went to 320MB.  Factory install goes to 1st HDD it finds, in my case 320 GB.
So you have discovered a new, how does it work?
1 HDD (c), 1 sata (for data).  It used factory recovery items, and waxed the sata( and made it bootable). Then got smarter, and restored C to HDD, unbootable.
Did someone not test this? Dont expect a new version of RNR. not supported on win 8. Acronis, $$ well spent.
    Dumb.
Next time, unplug the loved sata before a FULL HDD restore. (not a c drive restore). Sad.   unplug loved!
    ==
Did not find backup 2nd time around. Discussed in other posts from myself.  What is your windows platform RNR backup location set to?  If local, change it to USB or where ever you think they are at.

  • T-60, Rescue & recovery password not accepted

    Lenovo, T-60, Windows XP.
I am having a problem with starting the computer, so I wanted to do a full restore to see if that could solve the problem, however, when I get to the Rescue & Recovery 3 screen, it propmpts me for a "Rescue and Recovery Workspace Logon" and appears to ask for my Windows password (it already has my username filled in).
The problem is that no passwords are working, even the "I lost my password" procedure isn't working.
    The response screen says
"The requested operation requires password authentication, but you do not have a password configured.  Pleaase configure a password and retry the operation."
I have only used two passwords on this computer, and neither works.
How do I get past this logon screen?
FYI, the initial issue: the computer works fine when running, however it has a problem starting.  To get the computer to start, I have to remove the battery, unplug it, ptu the battery back in, hit the start button, and once it starts, I plug it back in.  Quite a process, but it seems to work.

    HI,
have you checked the BIOS option, if you can see such option in there?
If you once configred the PDA with a password, then go into Windows and run following command:
    C:\Program Files\Lenovo\Rescue and Recovery\pe_masterpw_app.exe -remove
This should remove this password. In case it's the password, that I'm thinking of.
Let me know, if this will work for you.
