TPfancontrol: Yes or No? How to control fan noise?

Hello,
I am new here, got my t400s 2801-CTO a few weeks ago.
Send it to repair after 2 days: I had issues with a high-pitched electric noise coming out of the speakers?(I think that many of you must have heard of this). Got it back (they replaced the speakers) and it wasn't any better. Until I found somewhere on the community forum that this sound is common to ThinkPads and that if I disable in Bios the CPU automatic power management (in config), it'll be better. YES IT WORKED. I figure that this community is way more helpful than the whole Service Center in Atlanta.
Now I need to take care of FAN SPEED before I turn this machine finally into a QUIET MACHINE.
I've heard that many use PTfancontrol to control the speed and noise of their Thinkpads?
How safe is this for the computer? What settings would be appropriate for T400s? And where to download this software?
Alternatively, what other forms of fan control does Lenovo offer?
i've found some fan control from Lenovo but I am not sure if this would work?
 http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-73410
Any help will be appreciated.
Christina

Sound like a "catch 22".  You turned off CPU power management so it runs at full power all the time, which requires the fan to run full blast all the time to keep it cool.
If you turn power management back on, does the fan slow down when the machine is just idling?
Sorry I don't have a fix, but maybe figuring out the cause(s) will lead to one.

  • How to control fan speed on Satellite A660-11M?

please any body know how to control fan speed its always 69% and make bad noise and the cpu usage is 3% no at high processing i try advanced power settings but still runing at high speed

    > I hope u didnt expect that they were gonna stay at 0% like forever
Of course I dont expect this. When you switch on the notebook CPU reach high temperature in few seconds only and you must not wonder if pretty high CPU temperature and fan activity will be shown very soon.
I dont know what do you expect but it is logic that cooling fan will run. Maybe all time maybe will be cut off for short period of time but it will run permanently. I dont see any problem there. With cooling method option it can be reduced a little bit.
And what is your question? I didnt understand what you want to know exactly.

I grasp that you want to control the fan speed manually. Here is a document on HP CoolSense Technology that may interest you. Here is a link to Control Your Computer's Fan Speeds for Better Performance When You Need It, Silence When You Don't from lifehacker by Whitson Gordon.  I hope this has addressed your concern.

  • Is my mac overheating? How to solve fan noise issues?

I have an early 2011 macbookpro 13 inch that came with lion installed. Especially for the last couple of days I realised my macbook is overheating. I'm using a hard surface lapdesk (the logitech model) at all times.
Today my computer was open only for half an hour and only chrome open (twitter for mac is running on background and that's it) istat nano shows temperatures for cpuA  of 190 degrees and the fan starts to make lots and lots of noise that I had a trouble hearing the low levels of music. idle memory is shown to be ranging from 20% to 95%, generally around 55%. fans go way above 4000rpm. This is not consistent though. It happens from time to time.
Also, from the beginning my computer makes a click clack noise when I first press the start button. I thought this was normal but I read somewhere in this forum that it is not. Is it really not normal?
What you think I should do? Shall i go to geniusbar to have it looked at? Is there really a problem?
    Thanks a lot!

You're quite conscientious about heat, and although your levels seem high, it's hard to validate what's normal and what's not with a computer. Go to a Apple Bar, and they'll probably say, "that's normal."
I do believe that you should visit your Genius Bar - but come prepared. Log regular temperatures, with and without a lapdesk. Note the click/clack noise. But unless you can suggest there's a problem, you might have a difficult time proving there's a problem.
One thing you can improve: boot time. If you're pressing the start button, you might sleep your machine, instead. No start up time, less wear on your machine, reduced heat. Also, you might want to look into GFXCardstatus to reduce your heat http://codykrieger.com/gfxCardStatus.
Oh...and post how things went at the Apple Store.

  • Is there a way control fan speed in ubuntu linux to replace hp coolsense?

My computer is prone to over-heating when I'm using Ubuntu and so I'm trying to control the fan speeds. I've researched a little and I'm blocked  on how to control fan speed  and then installed `lm-sensors`and `fan control`.
I'm now trying to configure lm-sensors to no avail. In terminal I typed `sudo sensors-detect` and answer YES to all YES/no questions. Installed modules with` sudo /etc/init.d/kmod start`.
    Now when I typed `sudo pwmconfig`
    I get this output
/usr/sbin/pwmconfig: There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed
The way I tried to fixed this is to edit /etc/default/grub to add `acpi_enforce_resources=lax` to the `GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT` and then perform a grub update. I'm still having the same issue.
Could it be that my fans  are PWM 3-pin  where fan speed is controlled by voltage?
This is the output of the `sensors` command.

  • Loud fan noise while gaming on GT70 gaming laptop

I've loved my laptop ever since I bought it but there seems to be one problem with the fan possibly.
The fan noise is really audible and it gets annoying when I'm gaming. Games like Fable Anniversary (highest setting) forces the fan to be turned on and make loud noises that even wearing a headset wouldn't help avoid. You know how new MSI laptops have a button for turning on cooler boost 2? It feels like it gets turned on by itself while playing some, if not most games.
I would first like to know if this is normal for a gaming laptop. Its REALLY annoying, I even tried the GT70 Fan control 1.63 but the fan keeps turning on by itself. I understand that the GTX 870m gets heated fast and therefore needs to cool off, but like on almost every game.....Skyrim, Tera (not even that demanding.....and not even on max setting ....) long hours of playing league of legends, The Last Remant..etc. I wanna play without such loud fan noises  I don't mind if its audible but not too loud, I can even hear the fan noise from upstairs if I leave my room door opened. I would really enjoy playing Tera and Archeage without such irritating, loud sound that really distracts me and makes me fear that its abnormal. Hell, even Rift (MMORPG) released in 2011, would turn on turbo fan.... =(. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Specs:
    Name: GT70 2PC Dominator
    Intel Core i7-4810MQ
    GTX 870m
    8gb RAM
    1TB 7200 RPM

There isn't much you can do with the tool but better than nothing.
It didn't fix the fan problem =/
I'm not the only one with such problem, https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=256673.0 look at the 2nd video and just listen to how loud the fan noise is. (Yes different models but same crap)
The silent option doesn't fully stop/slowdown the fan,  maybe just momentarily then once you open up the game, the fan goes back to its usual 3k RPM. Is there ANY way to stop this? its been happening ever since I bought it and it really makes me not wanna play simply because of the noise that is audible even through wearing a headset. Let alone not wearing a headset....
Sad it happens even when playing fifa 15. I mean is fifa 15 even THAT demanding? the answer is no, not even close to demanding as its using the same engine as 13, 14 ..etc. Also, I played it on my old lenovo laptop that had WAY lower specs such as gt 650m graphics card and yet the fan was extremely quiet, and I might add it was on highest setting....
I understand that the gpu can get heated fast, but on almost EVERY game? at first I thought the fan will only make such noises when playing highly demanding games such as Skyrim. A game from 4 years ago without any frkin mods. or Fable Anniversary..OR Prison Break: Conspiracy (what the f?) but it turns out that the fan will go turbo mode on literally every game. so in conclusion, every game is suddenly demanding thus the Cooler Booster 2 will automatically turn on.

  • HP 840 G1 fan noise?

    Hi,
I'm considering a HP 840 G1 with i5 CPU etc. How is the fan noise level on this one? Does the fan spin constantly, or would it remain silent during light use?
    Thanks!

  • EMac Fan Noise - Zalman FanMate 2 Installation Help Needed

    Hello everyone,
I'm after some help on how to install a Zalman FanMate 2 to my eMac to reduce the fan speed and therefore noise.
I purchased a Zalman FanMate after reading a previous thread on the discussion board on how to reduce fan noise. There was helpful info and links on the discussion, however the installation instructions (which included switching and soldering some wires) related to installation of the discontinued FanMate 1. The FanMate 2 I had purchased has slightly different wiring. Unfortunately the link on the discussion for installation of FanMate 2 is broken, and I can only seem to find conflicting instructions on the web on which wires to solder to which.
So, here's how the wires are currently arranged if the FanMate 2 is plugged into the eMac:
    FanMate (F) to eMac Fan (M): Yellow>Red, Red>Black, Black>Yellow
    FanMate (M) to eMac Power (F): Black>Green, Red>Black, White>Yellow
Having already unsuccessfully tried one suggested rewiring combination (the first FanMate 2 popped and gave an exhausted puff of smoke), I'm a little cautious and would really appreciate some sound advice before I do some serious damage.
    Many thanks in advance, folks.
    Best wishes,
    Ewan

    Hello Jon,
I don't thnk that model of fan drive is compatible.
If it looks different. I'd take it back.
There are fan add-ons and software that can tweak this issue(I went with software).
There is an article here: http://www.lbodnar.dsl.pipex.com/eMac/eMac-upgrade.html
Scroll down and you'll see the guy did similar to you with the Zalman.

  • How to control or know Fan Speed of the TBD

Hi, I Need to know how to control the Fan Speed of the Thunderbolt Display.
And the current temperature and the fan speed of the TBD.
    Thanks..

Not sure you can.  I have never seen any app that would do that.

  • How to control DE USB disk Automounts.

    Hi,
Can someone please guide me as to how to 'control' Automounts by DE when we plug USB disk drives.
I have KDE4 on my Arch system. When I connect a pen drive/USB HDD which is formatted as vfat/NTFS, the system(or KDE) 'Automounts' it in /media and I have read/write access to it. But if I use the same drive and format it as ext4, it wont be mounted as read/write for normal users but only for root.
Now pen drives and USB HDD's are removable storage drives and hence are volatile and could not have a fixed mount point, so it cannot be mounted by putting an entry in fstab or could they?. And I need my USB HDD frequently, and manually mounting it through CLI everytime and working on it as root is a bad idea i guess.
I am posting this because m confused as to how to control this Automount feature-What is the backend to it? Because I've read that HAL no longer takes care of it and that HAL will be deprecated soon, instead UDEV takes care of it. If that is the case then should I be concerned about polkit? Because that is what's the output provided by Dolphin(freedesktop.org policy prevented blah blah).
Another thing is if HAL is still in use and Automounts my devices then is it independent or polkit is a part of it. Then, is using hal-easy an option or replacement to standard HAL. ??!!??
I tried HAL archwiki and used the code to give a user permission to give rw access to automounted ext filesystems, but then nothing is mounted, it sings the same old freedesktop.org prevented bla blah song. And I think this is a question for all linuxes using Gnome and KDE in general.
    Any help is appreciated.

If by 'ability to mount as user' you mean to mount it manually but read/write access to normal users then yes. But primarily I need automounting as user, also be able to give access to other users for read/write et filesystem automounts.

    Hi,
Yes they are same unless you differentiate by using
1> Purchasing Document Category i.e CEKKO -BSTYP
    A.....     Request for Quotation
    F......Purchase Order
    K......Contract
    L......Scheduling Agreement
So if you just create a characteristics for CEKKO-BSTYP then maintain its values only for F so it will not be applied to RFQ

  • Warcraft and out-of-control fans?

My 13-year old son spends a lot of time on our iMac 5 playing World-of-Warcraft—too much in fact, but that's another issue.
Anyway, I've noticed that sometimes I'll walk into the room when he's playing and the iMac sounds like it's going to take off. In the past, the only way I could fix the out-of-control fans was to completely reinstall Mac OS X—a little extreme I know. I suspect that Warcraft is corrupting something—perhaps the PRAM, NVRAM, or something else. I know how to reset the PRAM, but I think resetting the NVRAM involves using the Terminal and I can'y find the instructions on how to do that.
Does anyone know what causes this and how it can be fixed. Other than this problem, our iMac runs great! Here are the system specs:
    iMac G5 20" 2GHz
    1 GB DDR SDRAM
    Mac OS 10.4.8
    250 GB HD (195.35 available)
    Thanks,

  • How to control an Apple Base Station with 3rd-party wireless card?

I recently upgraded my early 2004 Power Mac G5 2GHz DP to the 802.11n standard using a Newertechnology MAXPower 802.11n/g/b Wireless PCI Adapter to communicate with my new "n"-standard 2TB Time Capsule. My G5 shipped with an 802.11g-standard Airport Card which I disconnected when I installed the PCI card to avoid hardware conflicts. The new n-standard wireless set-up works without a problem, but having lost the Apple Airport Card, I no longer have the ability to control/manipulate the Timecapsule via the third-party card e.g. I cannot connect/disconnect my internet connection or otherwise troubleshoot the base station.
So, the question is, how can control an Apple base station with a third-party wireless card? As it stands now, I must boot up my laptop just to see if I have a connection.
    My thanks in advance,
    T. North
    Brussels, Belgium

Thanks for the assistance. Yes, I can indeed administer the Time Capsule from inside the Airport Utility, but I am still unable to connect or disconnect the Internet connection like you can with an Airport card (using the Airport drop-down menu.) If my ISP signal drops for whatever reason (which is does often) I have to boot up my laptop just to reconnect. Is there some feature within the Airport Utility that permits one to connect/disconnect the signal? If there is, I haven't found it yet.
