Track bleed while recording

I'm trying to use garageband mulitracking to record songs.  My usual method is to record guitar as first track, and vocals on the second track and build from there.  I am using headphones to listen to the guitar track and I'm singing along to the guitar.  But, when I play back the vocal track by itself, the guitar from track 1 is very audible.
This track bleed is really bad in playback.
Anyone know how to stop this?
I'm using iRig as the mic input.  I use over ear headphone's for playback. I've tried noise gate, but it doesn't stop it.  I'm starting to think I'll have to record one track on my iPad and the next track on my iPhone so the tracks are seperated and can't record each other.
Anyone experienced this and figured out how to stop it?

I'm using Sennheiser HD 203's.
I don't think it's picking up the headphone's because I use an external metranome to lay down the first track using the same headphone's, and that is never recorded.

good day, i just bought a audigy 4 (not the special edidtion with remote, etc..
my problem is when i open my production software (digital recorder--------
say i record the drums on track in multi rack view. when i unarm track and arm track 2 to say record a piano. Then when i press play to hear track 2 it plays the drums i recorded on track . the drums on track record on all my tracks. i had this problem with the soundcard that came with my pc, i think somebody said something about it was pretty cheap and didn't come with preview or something...........anyways i just bought a Soundblaster Audigy 4, well it's far from top of the line but it's a big upgrade for me, any know how i can fix this problem of track being recorded on all the tracks. It's important for me to be able to listen to previously recorded tracks while playing a new .
so does anybody know how and if Audigy 4 can do this? this is essential, i bought this soundcard for i could go from my hardware digital recorder to software digital recorder. if there's a way can someone give me exact instructions on how to do this.
'm using audigy 4 soundcard, 2.53 ghz intel celron, 40gb hard dri've, 52 mb of ram, and the recorders i'm using are cakewalk guitar pro and adobe audition. thanks

Just stop using "What U Hear" as a recording source. If you're using ASIO, the ASIO Mix L works like "What U Hear".
As recording source, use microphone for microphone and line-in (or AnalogMix()) for line-in sources.
For monitoring, there is a checkbox behind a tiny red plus sign in CT Surround Mixer (or behind advanced button in windows audio I/O controls) you may need to set (this setting and recording source selection from ct surround mixre/windows recording controls has no affect when you're using ASIO device driver mode in software).

  • Unable to delete extra tracks that vocal tracking created while recording vocals.

I Was tracking some vocals, so I selected the vocal tracking preset. It created more tracks every time I did a re take, even though I erased the unwanted take. Now I am left with 3 extra sub tracks under my vocal track. I would love to condense it, just can't figure out how to do it.

The whole situation is going to be made a little more frustrating, because the code behind all of this is Fraunhofer's, not Adobe's. Adobe has to licence the codec from them, so if anything weird is happening with it on a different platform it may not be their fault at all. But because so few of us are Mac users, the collective information available will be scant - unless the developers get a handle on it.

@#$%ING BEST MOVE I HAVE EVER MADE, AND SHOULD HAVE DONE IT A LONG TIME AGO!!!
Anyway, my DJ Applications run like a Mack Truck on steroids, the MAC itself just idles along like it's on a stroll through the park, and my mind is now 100% on the job instead of constantly worrying about the performance issues of my hardware.
Well there's the thing - my experience of Macs has been completely different. Laptops with the power supply connection held on by a magnet? That's not a sensible approach to anything - the number I've now seen held on by gaffer tape is considerable. And functionally they've been anything but wonderful - they seem to get hung up just as much as any PC I've ever experienced. As far as performance issues with PCs are concerned - well with my DAW, which is a clean machine, I've never had any performance issues at all. In comparative tests, there's no real advantage with Mac OS over - well, at least XP (although I'm not so sure about anything since that...)
I'd say that with either platform, you need to keep your machine relatively clean if you want to retain performance. Nowadays there's very little difference in hardware terms - except that you are held to ransom by Apple's prices; it's all down to which OS you can cope with with least aggravation.

  • Split Tracks While Recording w/MediaSource Play

I'm converting some cassettes using MediaSource Player. Can I split tracks while recording, i.e. record the whole cassette and then split that into individual tracks? I've done that with Microsoft Plus!, but can't seem to find that functionality with MediaSource. Also--if I want the absolute best quality recording of the cassettes, am I right in thinking I'd select WAV stereo, w/96.00 kHZ and 24 bits? The cassettes are li've recordings that I'd like to?have professionally mixed in a studio and then released as CD's, so I need the optimal "starting point" as far as the digital files are concerned. Thanks for any advice.

Yes, recording at 24/96 wave is the best that you can go with.
If you have one of the Creative sound cards, check whether you have the Creative Smart Recorder application. It has a split track function.

    Hi Anamika,
If you are running your query in Web Portal, it seems your web portal is not defined in RFC connection with system. Ask BASIS to connect it.
Also, You can run your report in RSRT with ABAP Web option and check if it is working on ABAP engine.

Hi, I have this exact same problem. I haven't been using an iRig, just a cheap USB-jack cable. I managed to do this with the first cable I bought, but since it broke I've been unable to find a replacement that allows me to hear the drums while recording. DId you manage to get over this issue? If so I would really like to know how. Thanks and best wishes.

  • How to view score of one track while recording another.

I want to record audio on one track. I want to read the notes and chords from another track while recording. ( I want to use the previously recorded track only for providing me with the score ) I would very much prefer to have Logic chase the score so that I know where I am in the arrangement while recording.
I am aware I can print out the score as a a pdf file and view that, and its not so bad, however I would prefer Logic to follow along the score and let the playhead indicate the location.
I can do this when not recording. I can view the previous track just before I go into recording, but when I go into recording, the score switches to showing currently track being recorded ( which is empty)

    Hi there,
Floating Windows all but disappeared with Logic 8 and many of us mourn their passing. Although some windows are, by default, floating (eg transport), the only one that you can choose to make float nowadays is the Environment, useful if you're setting up faders or some other real-time control.

  • While recording a guitar do not record the output from other tracks

    Hi all,
I'm an audition/recording newbie. I have Audition CC. I have recorded one guitar track. and now I'd like to record another one. The problem is that when I try to record it the output from the other one gets recorded as well. I do want to hear the output from the first track while recording track 2 but I want only to record my guitar playing in track 2.
    Thank you.

The basic problem here is not actually caused by Audition, but by your sound device mixer, which appears to be letting you record everything you hear - so that will be the guitar part you are playing, and also the replayed tracks that you've already recorded. In Windows, the fix for this is generally to make sure that the recording source is set to be just the input you are using, and not 'what you hear' or whatever it is on your device. The playback part of the mixer should let you monitor both the wav playback and your source, which is what you need to be doing - it's only the record settings you need to look at.
If you are using a Mac though, I can't help you because I don't know anything about how they work from that POV, but I'd imagine that it must be similar.

  • "Mark a good take while recording" Command

I can't figure out what this is supposed to do for me . . .
When I use this command, the current take is used in the comp (as always) but only until the point I hit the command any following comped material is cleared - then the comp becomes "on-the-fly" comp, which I don't understand. How is this useful?
Then if I "move comp to new track" (not the "on-the-fly comp") this "on-the-fly comp" disappears from the comp list, but if I use "Export comp to new track" the "on-the-fly comp" is not deleted . . .
Does anyone understand what this is all about?
    Thanks,
    James

Make sure you are using a cardioid pattern mic facing away from the hi hat while recording. I'm sure you knew that already. Like I said, drummers should be willing to compromise when trying to get a good sound.
Like another poster said, mic the bottom - that is where the majority of the "snare" sound is from. Take a foam coffee cup and put the head of the mic through it - it'll help limit the polar pattern of the mic further to reduce bleed from the hi hat.
When you mic the top and the bottom, reverse the phase of the bottom mic (or top, depending) and that may help cancel out some of the hi hat sound, as well as possibly give you a tighter snare sound. However, this does not always work - flip the phase, then flip it back and see how each one sounds.
After you record it, gate the snare, or pick the best sounding snare hits and use them appropriately to replace snare hits overrun by bleed. This is where pro tools Strip Silence plugin is exceptionally useful. . . I don't think Logic has this function though. Hope this helped.

  • Playback while recording question - help!

    Hi, all!
Just started using GB, so forgive me if this has been addressed, but I'd really appreciate the help. Say I have two tracks - I record one guitar track, then I want to record vocals while listening to that guitar track (to sing along). However, when I do this, obviously, the microphone for vocals picks up the guitar track being played on my computer, thus making the guitar louder and the vocals buried beneath what is essentially now TWO tracks of guitar. Is there a way to play back a track only in headphones while recording a new track to it?
    Thanks so much!

Yes. Plug headphones into the computer, just like the pros do it. Just make sure the built-in output is selected in GB Prefs>Audio/MIDI.

  • Podcast conversion painfully slow; can't add chapters while recording?

I'm finding GB3's conversion to m4a very, very slow.
For the last six months, I was using GB2 to mix my audio, iTunes to convert to m4a, and PodcastAV to add chapters and pictures. The mixdown process takes the same amount of time (10 minutes for an hour long podcast), but GB3 takes over half an hour to convert the audio to 64 kbps audio! In comparison, the equivalent iTunes takes three or four minutes to do the same. Is GarageBand not using the Velocity Engine?
Additionally, if I make any changes to the chapter info in GB3, I have to go through this painful 40+ minute process once again. Tools like PodcastAV and ChapterToolMe can take existing m4a files and simply pass it through unchanged, only modifying the chapter info. Is there a way around this?
Also, is there a way to add podcast chapters while recording? When recording, I can't select the podcast track to the "add chapter" button...
Gotta say I'm disappointed so far.
    17" powerbook (1.67)   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

OK, i have played a bit more with Iphoto and GarageBand. It is really the size of the pictures. The original size of my pictures is 2048x1536px. If i make the pictures much smaller, i can add them from the mediabrowser into the podcast.
What i now don't understand, why does it work if i drag them from the finder into garageband without editing the size? And what dimenson should the fotos have for optimal performance in the cast?

  • Track Bleeding

A project I'm working on has two tracks. One is an audio instrument with acoustic bass (EXSP24) and the other is an audio track for guitar. When I record guitar on the audio track and play the audio file alone I hear the acoustic bass on the file as well. Why is an audio instrument track bleeding into my audio file?

Haha, mate, this is how you learn!!!
In fact, there are some fairly interesting effects you can get by recording something through a guitar's pickups... Try holding notes on the strings and sliding and things. It's a really amusing thing to play with, and after a bit of playing, you can get some funb sounds. Anyway, this is what these forums are for!

  • Why does my line-in audio port quit stop working while recording?

My set-up is a bit confusing, so I'll try and be very specific.
I record into Garageband via the following set-up:
Microphone(s) run into TASCAM 4-track -> RCA-to-Stereo Cable runs out of TASCAM into MacBook Pro via the single audio port.
This generally works fine for several hours, but the last 3 times I've had a recording session, the audio signal has dropped to virtually nil without any warning. At this point, even yelling into the microphone (with the TASCAM max-ing out) will only produce 1 volume bar in the "Line-In" system preference screen. At best, it sounds like a very quiet whisper.
My microphone is working (works while recording to tape) as does my cable (RCA - to - Stereo) when used in other situations. Any ideas as to why this is happening? Am I tripping some sort of internal line-in volume...protector? (Is that even a thing?) Or do I need a new audio port?

funny how to one seems to have an answer for this, I just posted my own issue, audio in line port just stopped working after update.
