Track Doubling?

Hi Folks,
Logic's started doing something strange on me: each time I open a song, New or Saved, and insert an instrument into an instrument track, an exact copy is created exactly four tracks away. Eg. Inserting 'Ensemble Strings' in Track 5, an exact mirror appears in Track 9. Or insert in Track 6, mirror appears track 10, and so on.
When my the original track is selected and I play, the channel strip of the 'Mirror' track behaves in exactly same way, eg shows levels of original as I play etc.
Ive been using Logic for a few months now, and this has only just arisen. I'm guessing I've accidentily checked some dialogue box somewhere along the line, but can't for the life of me figure out what it is. I have a feeling I'm missing something really really obvious! It's driving me nuts!

This will happen under only one circumstance that I'm aware of...
For example, let's say you went into the Environment and deliberately made copies of audio channels 1 - 8 and just left them as they are, i.e., you didn't re-name them, re-assign them to be other tracks, etc. OK. So now, in your arrange window, let's say you had a few instances of audio channel 1. If you added a plug to the first "audio 1" track you encountered, you'd see this same plug appear on some other track that's assigned to the OTHER (duplicate) "audio 1" track because that duplicate is, for all intents and purposes, the same exact object as the other "audio 1", just copied. So whatever changes you make to one copy happens to them all.
There's another way this happens: it's due to a bug, and this has been happening since Logic 4.8.1...
Here's the deal...
There have been many instances over the years where, for some reason having nothing to do with any deliberate action on my part, certain objects will show up in duplicate. It almost always rears its ugly head with MIDI objects, but I've seen it with audio channels as well. The symptom is always apparent: when I'm in the Arrange window and I select (in this example) a MIDI instrument for that track, I'll see a list that looks like:

JV2080 1
JV2080 2
JV2080 2
JV2080 3
JV2080 3
JV2080 4
JV2080 4...
...which is just plain wrong. Or in the case of audio tracks,
Audio 1
Audio 1
Audio 2
Audio 2
Audio 3
Audio 3...
...and so on.
Best thing to do is go into your environment and very carefully examine the contents of your Audio layer (since that's the thing you're having problems with) and see if you have any duplicate audio channel objects. If so, select one of the duplicates (let's say it's Audio 1) and name it "Audio 1 XXXX". Now, go back to the Arrange window and click on the flip menu for one of the tracks that's using Audio 1. Look and see what's selected in that menu. Is it assigned to "Audio 1" or "Audio 1 XXXX"?
If it's assigned to "Audio 1", and not the "XXXX" version, hold control and 2-click on the area to the left of the name of that track. This will take you directly to the object in the Environment that is the actual "Audio 1". If you don't see it, it means that it's hidden beneath another object, probably "Audio 1 XXXX". In this case, move the XXXX upwards a bit and see if this is the case.
You should repeat this "XXXX" labeling and do your sleuthing until you've determined what's going on... At some point you'll have to decide whether to delete the "XXXX" versions or the non-XXXX versions of the duplicate audio objects in your environment.
POSTLUDE: I hope I've explained this OK. This is a very difficult problem to explain how to work around. Please post back if you have any questions about the procedure. I'll do what I can to work you through this.

Why are my header tracks double the normal height?

I'm running the most recent Garageband (10.0.3) on MacBook Pro 2012 with Mavericks. All OSX and app software updates are installed. System is running fine...
Somehow when working in Garageband last night, the height of my tracks became double the height as they normally are. I have no idea how or why this happened. This now being the case, far fewer tracks can fit on my screen when working and it's quite annoying.
I've tried some fixes that I found in these forums about deleting the display preferences files for individual songs, turning automation on and off, opening and closing Smart Controls, etc and nothing has worked yet. Many others seem to have experienced this same problem suddenly showing up.
The only thing that I did different last night that I've never done before is work with an external monitor. Garageband was open on the MacBook screen, and I was taking notes in an app on the external monitor. Other than that, I was doing things as normal.
Has anyone found a definitive solution to this to get the tracks back to normal height? Would re-installing Garageband from the App Store be a possible solution?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the reply leonie. You're absolutely right. How embarrassing that I didn't see that in the new version of GB! I had not added enough tracks to my new song at that point to see them start to shrink on their own.

One note at a time

I am not a keyboardist at all, so how do I go about entering a piano part one note at a time or one chord at a time?

Create a region in the piano track, double-click it, and apple-click into the region to enter notes!

Song created in GB '08 load incorrectly in 10

I created a song in GB '08 that I opened up in GB 10.0.2 with the intention of adding a drummer track. The song plays fine, but it is attached to the grid off by about 1/2 a beat (if I try to add a new track, it is about 1/2 beat out of sync). First question: is there something I need to do to get it to open aligned with the beat, and if not, are there any thoughts on the best way to realign the tracks so they are in sync with the system?
The tracks are all software instruments.

Show the Arrange Track, click the "+" button in the arrange track, double click the text to edit it.

Has anyone figured out a way to scroll & swipe with magic mouse again after upgrading to Maverick? Thanks!

I finally upgraded to Maverick and now my magic mouse doesn't scroll or swipe on any application and to make things worse, my keyboard scrolling ability after pressing down on the arrows is a bit delayed. Does anyone know how to solve this? My magic mouse and keyboard are a month old, so, I know it's not the devices, but something with the update.
Things I've done from reading other forums:
1. Went to System Preferences/Mouse Settings [but it only gives me two settings: Tracking & Double-Click Speed]
2. I've reset my PRAM a few timesnow.
3. Tried restarting my computer a few times too, but nothing.
4. I've tried searching for these files in my Library to DELETE, but they don't exist, so that method is not an option:
com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch.mouse.plist
com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch.trackpad.list
com.apple.driver.AppleHIDMouse.plist
Also, my bluetooth capabilites are no longer available because of this update. :^/

or my actual question is -- is there anything inherantly wrong with this approach.. i mean, if i can get it to make it through consistently, is there a problem with it repeating / updating the variable so many times in a row? is it a drain on system resources or can it break anything etc.?
Although I'm far from being an expert in programming, I would answer NO. Imho, you've just got a brillant idea! (As for “repeating / updating the variable so many times in a row”… you could add a short delay (like “delay 1”) inside the repeat block, but I don't think it's a must.)

When opening an application

Morning, I have just purchase an Imac 20 and have just started to have a problem when I open an application like mail or safari and when typing addresses in the bar or typing a message like I am now and the cursor moves from the area as though another process is starting or I have selected another area of the screen to do something else and I have to reposition my cursor in the address bar or message section to start typing again, can anyone through any light on this for me?

Congrats on your new iMac
Open System Preferences (Applications folder) and select "Mouse". Your tracking, double cick, and scrolling options are available there.
In the same window click Show All, then select "Keyboard" and select the Keyboard tab.
Set the key repeat and delay until repeat sliders to your liking.
Click, "Show All" again.. then select the "Universal Access". Make sure Voice Over is not selected.
Select the Keyboard tab and make sure Sticky Keys is "Off" and also for Slow Keys "Off"
Where you see the Acceptance Delay, set that in the middle of the slider.
Make sure the Mouse cable isn't interferring. Keep it away from the mouse pad.

How Do I Create a Bus in Logic Pro 7

Ok,
this maybe a very simple question and before I get torched I have researched this for over an hour and am still none the wiser.
I want to create a bus track/tracks. How do I do it? I have tried by using the environment window and arrange window and each time I try to find it to place effects into it Logic tells me that there aren't any created.
This is a steep learning curve for me as I am a Sonar user. IMO Sonar is easier to use but I am (slowly) getting some fantastic results in Logic.

go to mixer (apple key + 2) turn the global button on (top left) to see all the tracks drag the bar (window) all the way until you find the buss tracks, double click on the buss (or track you want) and it will be added to the arrange window, turn global off and the mixer only diplays the tracks from your arrange window.

How to cure unstable mouse cursor ?

After installing Snow Leopard I've had problems with the mouse cursor flying wildly to the edge of the screen, which makes retouching photos very difficult. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Have you checked Systems Prefs > Mouse, to see if the settings are as they should be? Especially, tracking, double click, scrolling etc which I have set around the middle of the slide bar, but you may prefer differently.

IPad does not sync correctly with iTunes

Hey, I have a problem and would appreciate some help.
I have all my music library on itunes on my macbook (including some albums that I have created as compilations by collating multiple albums and for which I have edited the album cover photo ie selected a photo of my own). Some of the songs have been entered in my library by cds that I had and the rest by being purchased directly from itunes.
When I sync my itunes library with my ipods all is well and the albums, artists, playlists etc sync exactly the same (that is covers, tracks, order etc remain as shown on my library).
When I sync with my iphone 5S or my ipad air then I get strange... Some albums show correclty, others have a different cover photo - not the one that I have selected and edited on itunes - some have the tracks doubled or even the entire albums doubled, etc...
Although I have tried to solve this on my own, i have not managed yet...
BTW both my devices (iphone and ipad) sync automatically with icloud and so I only connect them to my macbook in order to sync the music. Maybe this is the problem?? Is there any way to have icloud NOT sync music with the devices?
On my macbook I have tried the ioption 'manage music manually' and then selecting the albums on my own but i get the same strange results.
Any ideas?
I even tried to erase all the music from my ipad/iphone (by selecting 'manage music manually' and then not selecting any of the albums or tracks in my library) but the music, at least part of it remains there... basically only the songs or albums purchased from itunes showing the icloud download icon next to them.
Any sugestions on how to solve this issue?

Creating a score set - please help- I'm going crazy

OK- deep breath ...........I'm trying to create a score set for 4 instruments. I read the manual, then tried everything on p 765........... I started first with the tracks in the Arrange area.- with and without rubber bands - and because this didn't work, I scrubbed this and tried to simply set up thew score in the Score Editor.
It didn't work. I want to be able to see the music for 4 instruments - at one go -in the score editor. Is this possible ?
Please someone save my sanity and give me an blow- by- blow account how to achieve this. I've been on this for hours and can't see the wood for the trees now so am going out for a breath of fresh air.

You can look at the bottom of the arrange page.. But for 4 tracks I would open a score editor window by itself.. The score section is complex and not intuitive to say the least..
In the score editor, click on the 6th from the left box. it looks like a page of text (when you highlite it will turn blue).. That shows you the whole score, in a tradional page format.. If you still see only one track, double click somewhere other than the track, (space in between). Page will toggle between showing one track/ and all tracks..
To make life easier if you have many tracks to display = create a 'score set'. Label it, (band etc). reduce the size, 50 - 65% whatever. Then go under File in Logic, page set up.. Select the 90 turn, so now the pages longer side to side. You can see more measures at a time..
You may want to have several score sets, to help with editing. One of everything. another to show just the piano and guitar, etc. This will make it easier to edit, copy paste between staves etc.
The score editor is very powerful, if you take the time to figure it out, but documentation is vague

Tunes not starting in iTunes. No sound in QuickTime.

I've just upgraded my iTunes to 6.0.4.2 .
I opened iTunes and my library is all present and correct, but, if I try to start a track (double click, press play, hit space, use the menus, whatever), the following happens:
The play symbol changes to pause (as expected).
No music issues forth.
The progress diamond stays put.
The time elapsed doesn't elapse.
I have tried:
a) installing stand-alone QuickTime (it uninstalled QT for me).
b) re-installing QuickTime from the iTunes installation again. Same problem.
c) uninstalling and re-installing from the stand-alone QuickTime installation. Same problem. I think I've covered that now.
d) Nosed around in my compatibility settings. None are turned on.
e) Recreated my iTunes Library as per this link ( http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93313 ) suggested on one thread. Still not working.
I'm tearing my hair out now. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Erm. I'm a dolt. Rebooted. Seems OK now. I think it was down to Windows sound settings screwing up.

Cannot open any app, doc or message by clicking on their icon?

Any app, doc or message that I try to open by double clicking, either with the mouse or keypad, on the primary icon will not open that item. All that happens is that the icon is highlighted. I then have to open with Command+O or if the item is in the dock it will open by clicking. For example, I can open Safari from the dock but not by clicking on the icon in the Application folder.
I have tried everything that I could to get back to normal…DU from install disk; DU in computer; fsck; reset PRAM; reset PMU: reinstalled 10.4.11 combo and removed various pref files as suggested in this forum. Nothing helps!
The mouse will open & close windows and work online once I manage to get into a program. But I can't open email messages by clicking on them and the same goes for keychain items and there is no Command+O.
Frankly I am mystified. I haven't experienced this before with any of the system or program updates. I would appreciate any help please.

Magic Mouse, Trackpad, Bluetooth not working after Mountain Lion install

Is anyone else having the same issue after installing ML? I first noticed that my Magic Mouse didn't scroll as usual when I opened Safari. When I went to preferences, it only gave me tracking & double-click speed options- no scrolling options. I check the Accessibility preferences, but that didn't seem to help either. When I tried my Trackpad to check the preferences, it said that one wasn't connected, even though that's exactly what I used to open it in the first place. Now when I look at the top right hand corner for Bluetooth connectivity- it says Bluetooth- not available in a grayed out font. When I check out the About My Mac and check the Hardware->Bluetooth section it says 'No information found'.
I've tried the SMC/PRAM reset, unclicked "Disable automatic login" option in Security & Privacy preference page. Shut down my iMac and turned off the keyboard, mouce, and trackpad and restarted them after restarting the iMac.
Now I can seem to find anything else to try.
Does anyone have anything else to try?

Feature Request: MainStage as a Software Instrument

I want to use MainStage for performing, and I want at the same time to use Logic to record multitracks of my band.
Currently I can do this, but it's clumsy and kind of a pain.
I can either:
A) create an aggregate device using soundflower and bounce audio out of mainstage into a separate input in logic. (This works but causes wild issues with latency, and is super CPU intensive)
B) use two audio interfaces. set Mainstage to the output of one, and logic to record the input of the other. Use a splitter to pipe the output of Mainstage simultaneously into my amp and into Logic. (Downside: so, so many wires ... and places for noise to creep into the signal chain).
Now, wouldn't it just be FREAKIN' AWESEOME, if I could create a software instrument track in Logic, and let the instrument be an instance of mainstage? Better yet, treat it like an external midi track, and have it automatically just record whatever MainStage spits out it's audio interface.
BONUS: if you can go back and edit the midi performance and re-bounce the track
DOUBLE BONUS: clock sync. Let Logic's tempo sync the clock of MainStage, or better yet, let MainStage's tap-tempo set the tempo track in Logic.
I'm just sayin' ... I purchased Logic 9 upgrade on Friday. I'd pay again next week for these features. I bet a LOT of people would.

This suggestion may not fit your needs if you change sound patches with Mainstage during any give song BUT Have you considered playing your patches (keyboards i assume) and recording your band live using just LOGIC rather than Mainstage? You may not be able to use your peddle board to change sounds like you can with Mainstage BUT with a little work before hand you could set up your sounds, use the "I" function to monitor them LIVE and control what comes through the front end via volume of the channels. (And the band recording channels simply turn off the output or send them to an unused output so they don't come through your amp.) It may be too much of a pain and may not work if you change keyboard patches a lot during the songs but if you stick with one sound per song per keyboard this would work great for you.
I've tried this as a solo artist playing along to pre-recorded drums and sent my Chapman Stick (like a guitar and bass at the same time outputting in stereo) into several different tracks, each track using different effect settings. For example I created 3 different "guitar" patches for my melody strings, one clean, one reverb and one distorted. I had them ALL receive the input from the melody strings at the same time BUT only one played at a time because I used volume automation to control which channel was heard. The settings changed on their own using "volume automation" at preset times in the songs and it worked beautifully. The only down side was to have it change my patches (via volume control automation) I HAD to play to the prerecorded drums so "I" was in the right place at the right time for the patch change. Just like playing live to a sequencer. And it took a good amount if time to "write" each arrangement before any performance was possible. But it did and does work wonderfully.
Playing with a live band this would work GREAT if you use the "same sound patch for the entire song" and would require very little pre-recording work to "Write the arrangement" for each song but if you change patches "during the songs" it may be too much set up to make it worth your while. But playing SOLO along with a click or drum track this method works amazing well. Talk about band in a box!
Just thought I'd throw the idea out for your consideration.

Setting up Rap vocals?

I am having the hardest time getting the vocals that I desire. I want those in your face airy vocals, but my vocals seem to sit to low or to high. I have an apogee duet and an AT 4047, I set the track up in Logic as mono and generally the best gain for me has been 43 DB gain from the apogee. Should it only be reaching up to zero when I record a dry take? then after recorded to I increase the gain from there? or do I recorded the highest level just before it clips? I cant seem to get the right compressor settings I tried the rap setting and bring down the gain cause it is a bit to loud, but no matter what I lose some presence. I try adding in reverb either space designer or platinum, I cant get them to sound synthetic robotic, I turn down the wet its either on noticeable echo or nothing at all. i cant seem to get the DELAY to just give my vocals more presence again its either all or none trailing delay or none at all. If you have any advice that be great. Cant figure out the settings for sound of rap is in compression? I am on gearslutz and FP but get alott of buy a better preamp recommendations.

I am confused about how High to record the vocals let me go through my steps and tell me what to do or not to do etc?
I set the audio track in logic to mono, and output to 1-2.
In the apogee the DB is set to between 43 and 45 gain.
the track is set to 0DB
I do a few takes to see how im clipping or not.
I'll record a verse, then play it back and watch it on the mixer.
The problem is i either recorded it to hot where its clipping all the time, or to low where it sounds distant, or its in between and then it will spike on a few words (throughout the track)
What I cant figure out is should I be recording as high as possible, Or record lower (although when its low the track it self looks like the voice is very little im sure that you need a certain amount of signal on the track. Should I turn increase the track db over 0 if its recorded to low?
Then I add a compressor , set the rap setting decrease the gain a bit, put the threshold to 4.1.1, set it to soft and on platinum, ( helps give a little presence_)
Add reverb but it never sounds clean and clear its always robotic sounding or non existant , i play with the wet and dry signals.
add in delay, but can never get it to line up so there is not so much of an echoe.
I would love to do my spoken word with more presence
Should I copy past my tracks double them pan them a bit?
Man if anyone had a rap vocal take I would love to see how you set it up in logic!
