Track Enabled To Record Distorts my Guitars Sound

When I enable a track to record it alters the sound of my guitar. It almost sounds like the distortion effect is being applied twice which makes it the sound full of static and just crappy.
If I disable the record button the guitar sound goes back to normal.
Any ideas??? I'm totally stumped.
other info:
The GNX4 is connected via USB to the laptop and LE8
The laptop is configured to use the USB interface as the input and output for audio

The LE8 track is a simple audio track with no plugins applied. I'm not using any of the features in LE8 to alter the sound of the guitar.
My GNX4 1/4 outputs are connected to a simple mixer (with no effects enabled or anything else to alter the guitars sound) and my speakers are plugged into the output of the mixer.
When I disable the LE8 track for recording my guitar sound is perfect. I hit the record button and it changes the sound. I don't know what other information I can give????
Its almost like hitting record causes some kind of signal loop that is applying the GNX4 effects twice before LE8 records it. I can't explain how that might be happening but that is what sounds like is happening.

I'm trying to multi-track using an m-audio device, I can record my guitar fine. However, I want to create a new track so I can record an acoustic tambourine over the top. Instead it records the original guitar as well as the tambourine coming out with a really distorted sound. I've managed to record over the top of a guitar before and add diferent riffs and sounds but I've tried all of the settings but its still not working. Basically I want to record different tracks without it recording my previous guitar riffs as well. Help would really be appreciated.

Ah that was it, thanks a lot common sense really but thanks for the help

  • I have version 4.1.2 and recorded a lead guitar track (live classical guitar) using the acoustic guitar echoes (flange enabled). Now, when I burn a CD, the guitar track is very weak. Any clues?

I have version 4.1.2 and have been doing great rercording for several years. I use only real instruments. This week I added "acoustic guitar echoes" to my classical guitar, and that enabled the "flanger" setting which is what I wanted. Mysteriously, every time I burn a test CD, that lead guitar track is very weak, even though the recording level is quite high. Nothing I have done has helped the mix. Does anyone know why this is happening and what I can do to circumvent it? I've tried burning straight from GB to a CD and also via Itunes; it doesn't make any difference. Thanks.

P.S. I usually record my classical guitar on the "vocal" and "live performance" settings, using my Blue YETI mic, set on stereo. I get great recordings which always transfer perfectly to my CDs. I'm puzzled why adding the acoustic guitar echoes would be failing in the burn process. Hope this clarifies.

I'm new using Logic, i've been using garageband for quite awhile now though but my question is just basic. When i want to record electric guitar while clicking the software option it brings me to alot of guitar sounds that i want to chose. I chose the twangy electric or the distorted strat but i only hear clean sounds. No matter what kind of guitar sound i chose in the library it only produces clean guitar. How can i make it sound like it supposed to? Did i miss something i should do?

This definitely has me stumped as I'm unsure as to why your guitar can be heard, but with none of the channel strips plugins applied to the sound.
On the record enabled channel strip that contains your guitar input, is the "I" button located near the "R" active? Also, if you record your guitar, can you hear the FX applied to it when you play back the recorded track?

I checked audio preferences and they are set as they should be. I tried it in all the other older projects and same issue anyone have any experience like this very frustrating.  Can one download old version still ? or can you run both versions on OS10.9.5 ?

Ok, either my question was too long or nobody seems to have an answer. Sad, either way
Here's something I found out in the meantime, maybe this is interesting for somebody or maybe - problem's not totally solved - enough info for any of you to give me further advice.
When I start Logic Core Audio driver de-activated, I can open old songs. Then I save them in a new folder with all audio files and a new name. And I remove all EXS24 instruments as well as the Space Designer. I quit Logic, re-open with Core Audio activated and I can open the song.
Problem no.1: EXS24 instruments don't find the appropriate samples, but EXSMananger Pro did help me with this. Same problem with Space Designer, which doesn't find the impulse responses, connected to a certain preset.
Two questions, every idea would be great!
    - Is there any way to teach Space Designer Presets where to look for impulse respones. I can load IR samples directly and create a new preset, but I can't use my old ones.
    - Is it possible to install Logic from scratch over an existing version? Or how should I de-install everything connected with Logic and then install a fresh version from CD?
    Thank you again,

  • No Audio Track is enabled for recording message

I'm a beginner in Mac and would appreciate some help in sorting out a problem with Garageband podcasting on iLife '06.
When I choose female voice and press the red RECORD button, I get this message: "No Audio Track is enabled for recording". I have done some tests in the past which were ok. Have I accidently changed the settings? I checked input and output devices (usb external mic and speaker headset is recognised and that voice and not instrument selection is made.
Can anyone help me please. Thank you.

To enable a track choose the track and click on the
small button icon on the right just under the track
name. The button will be red when enabled.
I'm looking for such a button and don't see one. AFAICT the track name is "Male Basic." Near the track name I see three buttons: mute/unmute, solo, and show/hide volume curve. But that's it. To the right of that are the mixer controls, and no other obvious buttons that I can see. What does or should the button look like? And are we both referring to the same version of GB? I'm wondering if a later version of GB has the button, but version 1 doesn't?
BTW I have looked through the docs (the At-A-Glance and the 3 tutorial PDFs) that came with the installation, and using Preview's Search function, can find no instance of the string "enabl" in any of the documents. Nor is it anywhere in Help.
    Thanks again...

  • Recording an acoustic guitar on basic track and am getting effects.  How do I stop them?

I just changed to a Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 and am having problems getting it set up.  I download the drivers and software but when I go to open them up, it is blank.  The other problem is that I just tried to record an acoustic guitar and I get little volume all the way max and I get effects, eg, flange, reverb and echo on the track.  Help.  Thanks.  Tom
I am running it on a MAc Pro i7 OSX 10.9

I have downloaded the add-on and the popup blocker was already in place. It is too soon to tell if it works but I will let you know in a few days.
One additional piece of information...I am getting a pop-up (despite the blocker) that asks if I want to download a JScript File from http://tag.admeld.com. I have not asked for this and I have responded to "cancel" but I suspect that this is where the auditory pop-up is coming from. The file is "meld.js"
I believe that this happened once before and despite clicking "cancel" an auditory ad ran while I was listening to something else.
If this is coming from one source, I'd like to block it....Suggestions are welcome.
A later comment... I have not gotten any auditory popups in the last few hours, but I keep getting the above "meld.js" popup. I assume that this is a Java Script program but I have not requested it and would like to know what it is and why it is coming up over and over again.
    Please help!
A still later comment - no change despite disabling popups and adding the add-on - I am still getting auditory popups and getting something asking me to download "meld.js"
Is there anyone out there who can help?

  • Recording vocals and guitar at the same time, using the Alesis IO dock!

    Hi there!
I have an Ipad 2 with the newest OS installed etc. And I rea the other posts in here.
I bought an IO dock from Alesis the other day and was full of exspectations, but I got a bit disappointed -> Garageband! When I bought the Ipad dock I exspected that I would be able to record (or just play and hear the inputsound from two devices) at the same time in my headphones! But I wasn't... Now I'm wondering if this is going to be fixed in an update or not? I think it would be a shame if this issue isnt adressed, due to the huge abilities the Ipad/garageband/Ipad docks withhold.
So anyone know anything? I went to my musicstore and spent about an hour or so with the tech dude there trying dfferent setups, but unfortunatly without luck! Just to clarify that I didt just plugged in my guitar and got mad that it wasnt apple intuative!
    Hope someone can help :)

I am wondering if I can record audio and midi at the
same time in Logic 7 Express. I am running my guitar
thrugh a Roland GR 33, and a line out and using the
GR 33 to trigger sounds in the Logic's synth section
but cant seem to record all three tracks at once. If
any one knows how let me know. Oh and I am running
the GR Synth and Guitar into the Prosonus Fire Fox
and have the GR 33 out midi to the Fire Box as well.
So I guss the question is how do I sent up two audo
tracks and one midi track to record in real time.
    Thanks Victor
Try arming the audio tracks, select one of the tracks, then while holding down the shift key, select the midi track you want to record, arming the "r" on the midi track. Press "record".....

  • That big, wide guitar sound

    Hey folks-
Bare with me - I'm looking for the best way to get that big, wide guitar sound out of Logic. Here's an example of what I'm trying to achieve:
    http://www.bedrock-studios.com/smashing.mp3
I'm curious if anyone can point out any useful techniques for getting that big sound that doesnt grate on the ears. Do they use stereo widening - to what degree?? What kind of EQ? Whenever i record, i can hear every strum, but listening to this you almost loose the strum and it becomes this collage of sound that's really beautiful. Do they play multiple takes simultaneously? What kinds of pickup settings? Whats the secret?
Yes, I know getting a mastering technician would be the best thing to do, or go read some fancy books by so-and-so and that it takes "years and years" of learning, and yes, i know it's all up to my ears. But there has to be at least one or two tried-and-true settings for getting started with a big guitar sound. I'm doing this for fun, but i get discouraged when i cant even get template settings to sound nice.
What about the guitar itself? Any recommendations for excellent "rock-style" pickups or strings? I've got a fender strat going through a m-audio firewire solo on a G5.
Thanks for the help... go easy. I just want to have fun.
    Cheers,

    Chris,
I agree with a lot of what Brent has said. Let me add to it...
Although it's public record that Billy Corgan does layer his guitars, in the clip you posted the link to, the "main" guitar, or main riff guitar, doesn't sound doubled (or tripled, etc...) to me. It does sound like it has been "stereo-ized". That can be done on many ways, but one popular way is to record your guitar part, pan it hard left, then send it to a delay, with the delay set anywhere from 60 ms to 150 ms, 100% wet, and the output of that delay panned hard right (or visa versa).
I like to this same thing with small room reverbs. It's not as pronounced as it is with a delay, but offers a sonic alternative.
Another technique used a lot is to record one guitar, through multiple amps. The mic placements on the amps alone, when panned around, can provide a HUGE stereo image, even though it's one guitar. You also get the benefits of having the amps set to various amounts of gain, so you can get a wide range of tones, all at the same time. You could emulate this, by copying your guitar track to several other tracks, each with a different Guitar Amp Pro, set to different settings, on each track. Maybe go as far as nudging them around in time, just a smidge, or a add more room reverb to one, while the others are dryer, etc... experiment!
You could certainly just play the part twice, and pan each track left and right. And while that sounds really cool (and has been done to death), it doesn't provide the same "focus" as a single part, played or mixed in stereo.
And while I agree that you'll never get out of Guitar Amp Pro what you can from a decent tube amp, it shouldn't stop you from trying. And what Brent said about rolling off Highs (and lows) is good practice with guitar amp simulators. A guitar speaker isn't capable of reproducing frequencies up high (like at 10 or 12k). get rid of them... those frequencies are only contributing to giving the amp simulator have a "fizzy" sound.
And don't lose the Strat... just try to get a Les Paul (or other Humbucker driven guitar) to add to your arsenal.
And never forget, a large part of a guitars sound (or any instrument for that matter), comes from the player...

  • Garageband - using apogee Jam and acoustic guitar sound

    Hi
I am trying to record an acoustic guitar on garageband (using my actual acoustic guitar), however the sound of the low strings sounds really muffled and low quality. i am using the built-in mic on my Mac to do this, not any external equipment. Is it advisible to always use an external mic and/or directly plug any instrument directly into the Mac? Are there any methods to improve the sound of recording?
I also purchased an apogee Jam device to plug electric guitar and bass directly into my Mac and record. It seems to be working, however, i cant get any output sound at all (when playing or recording). it does record, but only like an unplugged electric instrument would sound. On the 'Track' menu at the top, the option to 'show monitoring for real instrument tracks' is greyed out when i have the Jam plugged in. i cant find any way to hear the instrument in Garageband at all.
    I am using a Mac Book Pro, Garageband 11 V. 6.0.5.
    Any help, much appreciated!
    Thanks
    Dom

    Dom,
Double check that your JAM the selected input source by opening System Preferences>Sound>Input and select JAM. When you open GarageBand make sure to start a new "Real Instrument Track" or "Guitar Track" (if you want to add any crazy effects to the acoustic signal). Also make sure to select the button "I want to hear my instrument as I play and record."

  • How to get this guitar sound

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2C0F7eFxhXM&t=1m23s
There is a guitar in the background panned left just playing notes, not chords, and Im just curious if anyone has any idea how to best try and get this guitar sound in Logic? Probably a shot in the dark here but I cant seem to figure out how to get even close to it on my own. Not a logic pro user at all.

You'll improve as an engineer by following a few steps. Don't start with a Logic issue, start with an engineering issue and then you'll get how best to solve it with what you have.
Firstly, what makes this sound? How is it made and how do you think it was recorded? To me, this sounds like a humbucker pickup so I'd guess a les Paul or maybe an SG type of guitar going into maybe a Marshall or an Orange type of amp. This is not a DI'ed sound so you're going to have trouble here if you only have DI's.
To me this sounds like a ribbon mic, pretty closely mice'd, maybe paired with a 57 or sen 906, something like that. And it's mainly just HIM playing. Great sound, good player. Never underestimate this.
Now we have the internet so lets look him up and see if we can track down what he uses or used on this record.
OK, looks like he used a custom Ibanez AX-120 with a Seymour Duncan JB Jnr pickup, so it is a high output humbucker and it also looks like he went through an Orange stack.
If you can get hold of a guitar with a humbucker at the bridge, you'll be making the first positive steps. You don't mention what gear, if any, that you have only what software. Again, if you can get hold of a hi-gain amp and a couple of mics you're going to a lot closer in terms of gear, and hence sound.
I see Guitar Rig has the 'Citrus' amp, so if you can't get your hands on a real amp, maybe start here. Don't be shy with the gain but again, try to restrain yourself a little.
I think your main enemies here are that this record is very live and most of the sound is dialled in to the amp plus the choice of mics. So try to use a matching cab to the citrus amp and choose a ribbon mic in Guitar Rig, I'm sure there's at least one in there.
Finally of course, it's the way he plays it too. Good luck with that.
In summing up, always approach these things from an engineering point of view. What is it? What makes it what it is? This will take you a good way to where you want to be and make you a better engineer. After that, solving your issue with Logic will be simpler because you've gotten so much closer with your approach. This comes with time, and I mean years.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can I Record My Acoustic Guitar With The Built-in Mic?

    Hi everybody!
I've been wondering that can i record the acoustic sound of my guitar with the built-in micro in my Powerbook G4?
Because my guitar doesn't have the out-put port for the cable that's why i want to use the Mic included in the PWB or the one built-in in my webcam(with USP port)....
Could anybody tell me how to set it up please? Thanks for your helps.

  • Recording Distortion

I just purchased a Presonus Studio Live and Logic Studio (Logic Pro 9). We went to have our first recording session and I noticed some clicking and poping, which was mostly taken care of by adjusting the buffer size to 32 or 64. I was monitoring the performance (Vocals and Harmonica) through the studio live with no distortion. When we played it back (through Logic which was connected to the studio live) there was periodic distortion at loud (but not peaking around -6 on the logic meter) volumes and lower volumes. It sound digital to me. The presonus studio live is a 16 channel console with firewire out. I was recording only one track with about 14 other tracks already recorded.
I read on some threads that a Firewire Expresscard with TI chip fixed some similar problems, but I was hoping to get some help before I shell out more money.
The other tracks were exported from Pro Tools LE8 and imported into Logic, so these two tracks (vocal and harmonica) were the first tracks we tried recording on the software/interface setup.

Fixed the issue by swithing the external hard drive form firewire 800 to firewre 400. It is now rock solid.
