Track internet connections

I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to track my internet connections. I want to know what servers/ip addresses I am or my PS3 is connecting to. Is that possible?
Maybe not monitor/track through the router, but even if I log on the inrternet through my iMac?
Thank you

If you go to the terminal on your MAC and type ifconfig you will see all your network connections.
Also can type cat /etc/hosts to see your ip
Your router will end with .1
You can ping the IPs in the terminal.
Example:
ping 10.1.1.1.3
if you get a reply then that address then that IP has been issued buy the router.
you can also assign IPs with AirPort Utility.
Hope this helps you.

    Hi Brian,
Thanks restoring and restarting didn't fix my problem - i have started it fresh and still it doesn't work. Basically I press ONCE on the remote, after the machine has not had any commands for 10 minutes, and the cursor skips from one end of the menu to the other - so I can't choose network or update software etc - I sometimes manage to stop it randomly in the middle of the menu if I press on a command in the middle of the cursor skipping all the menu steps...not sure what the problem is but I have basically not used my brand new apple tv since I bought it for that reason! I should call Apple support I suppose! grrrr hate wasting time with stuff like this!
    Thanks for your help though!

  • Tracking iPhone without internet connection..

Is it actually possible to track iPhone without internet connection? I mean, the iPhone which I am tracking has no internet connection... (Example, has been lost in a foreign country and  the roaming data is not ON) Anyone has an idea how to do the tracking?

Short answer: no, it's not possible. Longer answer: The cellular carriers could potentially track the phone if it's on. However, they'd most likely only give that information to law enforcement with a proper subpoena.

  • Tracking internet address connected?

    Greetings everyone!
I suppose I wanted to ask to everyone here,
if only you guys wanted to share some advice to me.
I realized there's many discussion about networking programming.
    But please advice me about it with this situation below;
A single PC connected to internet.
Java apps running. Using its thread.
    Tracking the User Internet Activity.
Making some log of the website visited.
Does anyone may give me advice about it, how and
    which way is the safeties?
Since I found many discussion but, still I lack of understanding.
Please point me out of topic which I may learn from.
~ just new to networking stuff in general sense.

Are these all the same question?

And on how many other forums did you post these questions?
People don't like to waste their time answering a question that somebody else has already answered.

  • WRT54G3G-ST router - no internet connection - can't reset router

Hello.  Definite longer story definitely not short (I apologize for the rambling length...  I don't know what is and isn't important, so scan at will, please...  I am sorry...):  Recently my computer (Dell XPS 400, Windows XP Service Pack 3, Internet Explorer 7 with phishing filter and pop-up blocker on, SiteAdvisor, up-to-date McAfee Virus Scanner and Firewall, and a Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G3G-ST router with its power adapter plugged into the wall electrical outlet and a network cable from it directly connected to my computer.) got a drive-by Generic.dx trojan without me downloading anything from one of the few sites I visit daily.  My internet connection crawled, and I now have no connection at all.
I've been getting help from McAfee forums very helpful and quick good volunteers...  They recommended Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to me, which I downloaded from my second clean computer (a laptop) to my flash drive, then to my infected computer.  I ran it, tried updating it as recommended, and only then discovered the trojan killed my broadband entirely.  I scanned with it anyway, and it quickly found and removed/quarantined 11 Adware.MyWebSearch related files, but nothing else.  They then gave me a link to an offline updater patch file, and told me scan in safe mode until nothing else was found and check if it fixed my lack of broadband access.  Which I did, Malwarebytes found nothing else, but unfortunately I still had no broadband.
Next, they recommended WinsockXPFix.  Which I ran and it made all its registry changes OK, I rebooted as required but still no broadband unfortunately.  Did using WinsockXPFix make things worse for me with the registry changes it made?  I used its registry backup to save the pre-changed registry files prior to running.  Should I revert back since I still have no broadband connection?  The McAfee volunteers then kindly told me I needed to hard reset the router, though I've tried countless times with no fortune.  I'm at a definite loss as to what, if anything, I can do to hopefully get my broadband back, please...
It's very confusing with the numerous different variations to reset routers, and what I need to do for my router model (Variations:  Unplug this cable/adapter exactly where, or not; hold the reset button between 5-30 seconds; rebooting the computer, or not; waiting 1 or 2 minutes between various steps, or not - and for all of these at what exact point in the reset process.).
I reset it once before with the reset button, routers page at http://192.168.1.1, default admin password, then changed it for security, etc; but this time I can't get it to work.  I'm happy as can be to try again, to get a walk-through maybe, anything please...  When I go to http://192.168.1.1 now, or any other address, Internet Explorer gripes at me that I'm offline, which is annoyingly correct.  I don't have, and never had Zone Alarm, but disabling my McAfee Firewall doesn't help.  IPCONFIG at the Command Prompt gives me a Windows assigned address of 169.254.X.X
I was going to use the routers Setup Wizard CD to try to reset the router, and if that failed to try to get its firmware version number to maybe upgrade.  But I was going to ask here first for expert advice since I've read many things that can go wrong while upgrading firmware.  However, scanning the CD (Without running the CD.) McAfee found the virus W32/HLLP.Philis.ini in the file "D:\_desktop.ini" on the CD.  McAfee didn't delete the file, I don't know why.
I scanned my entire computer several times and no infections were reported.  I uploaded the file several times to both www.virustotal.com (39 online virus scanners), and virusscan.jotti.org (20 online virus scanners) and every time every virus scanner reported no possible infections.  Is my up-to-date McAfee virus scanner reporting a false positive and yet Jotti and Virustotal's 2 McAfee scanners report the file as probable clean?  Is "_desktop.ini" a legitimate Linksys file?  I found no information on Linksys/its forums about it.  My problems just keep multiplying...mentioning of more problems...
Finding that suspect file on the CD I decided to instead download the Setup Wizard from Linksys
    (Router product page:  http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/support/WRT54G3G-ST/download
    Actual file:  http://downloads.linksysbycisco.com/downloads/WRT54G3G-ST_SetupWizard_4_2_06042008.zip)
to my flash drive, then to my infected computer that is connected to the router.  I ran it (Downloaded file version: 4.2.0.007 - Original CD Setup Wizard version: 4.0 printed on CD front.) and it immediately gave 1 of 3 options:  Mobile Broadband Only, Broadband WAN Only, or Broadband WAN and Mobile Broadband.  I don't know what damage, if any, I caused by continuing.
It looked like it was trying to go through the entire router setup process.  I thought it would take me to some options to reset the router, as I've read in the User Guide and elsewhere - that was my understanding.  The setup process stopped at only 30% done "Router not found, please make sure the router is properly connected and try again."  How much overwriting of original router setup files did I do by continuing?  I'm entirely confused.  Doesn't the Wizard check if the router has been previously setup prior to setting it up again?  Did the version difference cause my router to not be detected by the Setup Wizard?  Did the Generic.dx trojan that killed my broadband trash my computer settings so bad that my router is undetectable/essentially not setup?
Update of sorts:  I tried one last time to reset the router, and I unplugged/plugged the network cable.  Doing that I still had no broadband on my main usage Dell XPS computer that's connected to the Linksys router.  However, my laptop, with Data Card in the router, was for the first time able to find the network - the constant connection and speed is brilliant, it's what it allways has been on the laptop (Since the trojan/router problems, my laptop only had broadband with the Data Card in the laptop.).  Maybe the network cable simply wasn't re-connected properly/entirely during 1 of the many reset attempts, it indeed could also explain the downloaded Setup Wizard not being able to find the router/only getting 30% done.
Laptop Command Prompt IPCONFIG /ALL with Sprint Data Card inserted in laptop computer slot:
    IP Address    = 174.158.XX.XXX (Sprint)
    Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.255
    DNS Servers = 68.28.90.91
                               68.28.82.91
Laptop Command Prompt IPCONFIG /ALL with Sprint Data Card inserted in router:
    IP Address    = 192.168.1.1XX
    Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway = 192.168.1.1
    DHCP Server      = 192.168.1.1
    DNS Servers      = 192.168.1.1
Since my laptop started working with the Data Card in the router I haven't tried again to reset the router, nor have I tried the downloaded Setup Wizard.  I don't want to mess anything up further than I have(?) / the trojan has, and I need some expert advice, please, as to which of the 2 if either I should do (first?).  On my laptop computer only, typing http://192.168.1.1 in Internet Explorer gets the pop-up for username and password, but I haven't proceeded.  I've read you shouldn't reset the router and/or(? Is it both or just 1 please?) upgrade the firmware unless the computer is directly connected to the router - which my laptop is not.  On my other computer that still has no broadband, Internet Explorer still tells me I'm offline when typing http://192.168.1.1 into it.  My IP Address on it is still a Windows assigned 169.254.X.X and a Command Prompt PING 192.168.1.1 returns with "Destination host unreachable.", as it allways has and same with all other addresses (Except for 169.254.X.X).
Annoying 2nd "update" of sorts, apologies for length, as allways:  I've been so focused on the trojan/broadband killing that I've cluelessly largely forgot that I have dial-up with AOL.  Trying AOL dial-up also does not work, the insanity thickens...  AOL software tells me to check my connection, but all phone cords are plugged in as should be.  I plugged a phone directly into the wall outlet and I get a dial tone, I can call out OK, and the phone rings and gets calls OK.  Device Manager-Modems-Properties-Device Status says the modem is working properly, and Resources Tab shows no conflicts.  Diagnostics Tab's Query Modem looks OK to me, as does the log, but as allways I'm definitely no expert.  I didn't change any settings anywhere.
I have noticed off and on that checking IPCONFIG it says my IP Address is 192.168.1.100   It lasts maybe a day (then goes back to 169.254.X.X), maybe longer, I don't know - I don't check that often to pin it down (Should I?).  During this time neither my broadband, nor my dial-up works.  I can PING 192.168.1.100, but nothing else.  I'm convinced the evil trojan killed both my broadband and dial-up - I've never had a problem with my Conexant D850 56K V.9x DFVc Modem prior.  Also, I'm not convinced the trojan is not still lurking everywhere on my computer, I think it is...
Any and all help in restoring my broadband/dial-up is greatly appreciated, please...  Thank you!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hello.  It's been entirely too long since I've replied, I'm sorry.  There's no excuse, and it's terribly rude of me...  You took the time to read and reply to me, and I endlessly appreciate that indeed.  I apologize for my long delay, I'm sorry...
After I left my message I downloaded many virus/spyware scanners, etc. from my laptop onto my flash drive, then my other computer for some needed thorough deep scans.  One that I downloaded was Network Magic, which somehow, someway fixed both my broadband/dial-up internet on my main computer that's connected to the WRT54G3G-ST router.  I don't know what/how it repaired my connection, but the broadband connection/speed has been working brilliantly since...  Network Magic worked for me, and I highly recommend it to everyone who has stubborn complete lack of internet problems (caused by trojans at that) as I did.  There's no guarantee it'll work, but it did for me to my amazement.
Network Magic, as is Linksys, is owned by parent company Cisco.  Respectfully to all the good knowledgeable experts here (Which clearly I am not.), I don't want to tread out of my bounds.  I'm simply trying hopefully to be helpful and save some headaches for both you the volunteers and the users...buying a new router and/or computer was on my mind, with all due respect I recommend suggesting to try Network Magic to users if resetting the router/all else fails, please.  I did use WinsockXPFix/WinsockFix utility prior to using Network Magic, I don't know if that matters.
I also upgraded my McAfee package, I installed over my old software instead of uninstalling first, which caused errors in the virus scanner of all critically needed things.  I have it installed properly now, but it did cause quite a delay in re-focus of my time.  Some of the virus scans also found many trojans, some were the same/in the same folders that killed my broadband - which stopped me in my tracks to insure uninfected cleaning.
That definitely doesn't entirely explain the long lapse of time, and I apologize for that, again.  It's just that I'm trying to be cautious and slow in all this.  To answer the first very good idea you made:  Unfortunately, there's no place on my other computer to plug the router in to, which all the more so caused frustration (at the time).  I forgot to include this in my novel length post of countless things to check/remember...  It was a brilliant idea though, thank you...
I thank you for your time and help, I do sincerely appreciate it...  Thank you...  I think, and hope this matter is solved.  It seems to be, the router is working perfectly as it allways has, and I'm positively happy as can be about it.  Thank you...  Peace...

  • My brand new mac pro always had Internet connection issues at school. WHY is that? I see the school's Internet working perfectly fine on other PC's, but there is never a day where my mac doesn't have Internet connection issues at school. How do I fix it?

I got my mac pro in the middle of August. School started the week after. Internet was working perfectly fine at home. But at school, I never had a good connection. Sometimes on the good days I get a connection when I'm sitting at the exact spot in class I always sit at. It's ridiculous and it's frustrating. I invested my money into this laptop and I'm beginning to regret it. I thought it was the school's Internet, but I don't see Internet issues with other PC users. It's most frustrating on registration days and I'm trying to register for my classes before it gets taken, but again... Internet connection issues. It's random. Majority of the time, it doesn't work at all. I've done Network Diagnosis and turning WiFi off then turning it on again. I've done everything I could. I put my money on this laptop and it was a lot of money. I could have bought an 800 dollars laptop and I would have Internet connection anywhere on campus. So, I don't want to continue everyday to regret on buying this laptop every time I try to connect to the Internet at school or Starbucks or anywhere else. How do I fix this? What's the problem ?
At school, I heard this guy had a problem with Internet connections too and he owned a new mac book pro. He said something like Apple messed up on something, but he fixed it. If I knew mac book pro's had these issues I wouldn't have bought it in the first place. It's freezing on me every other day. It's ridiculous. But what concerns me the most is the Internet connection. So someone please tell me what can I do next to prevent the problem? Am I doing something wrong maybe?

    Hi Kevin,
I'm using an XLR input mic which is connected to the phantom power enabled XLR mic socket on a USB M-Audio M-Track. The M-Track is connected by USB to the Mac Pro - so effectively I've got an M-Audio USB soundcard with a mic input.  I've also tried a microphone that is a straight XLR to USB cable (guessing with some soundcard chip buried in the usb plug) but that also yields the same effect of bad latency, intermittent quality, stuttering and repeating and echoing (without the speakers on during record so its not feedback).
The mic works absolutely fine with other recording applications I have on the mac at the moment - albeit non-adobe ones (tested it on the EasyAudioRecorder - and it lives up to its name. it's easy)
I will try with Audition and report back, but sitting here right now I can imagine it would work fine with audition too - it just seems to be the way premiere is set up for recording into the timeline is a bit sketchy.  I'm willing to accept it might well be a quirk with the new Mac Pro trashcan - I'm not weighting all the woes on premiere.
Any thoughts or am I out of luck to sit with my fingers crossed for a fix in the next round of updates?
    Nathan.

  • How can a session be setup between two MacBook Pro's at different locations on high speed Internet connections, be setup to have a live recording session in Logic?

My partner and I live on opposite sides of the valley here in Phoenix. About 50 miles apart one way. We are Musicians and are working on a commercial for television, and would like to know if there is a way, between FaceTime and Logic, that we can configure our MacBook Pro's to record sessions together without having to be at the same house? When we FaceTime, he can hear my keyboard through his headphones, but we can't seem to get the signal routed into Logic and register to a track when its record enabled. Is there a way for us to save gas, and record at seperate locations, so he can engineer me and I can engineer him, while we build this project in Logic and Final Cut? Here is what we are using, we have nearly identicle setups, which was planned so we might be able to do something like this. Both of us are using Mid 2012 15" MacBook Pro's with 2.6GHz Intel i7 processors and 16GB RAM. The only difference between the two MacBooks is that his has an Optical Drive, but I removed mine and replaced it with a 2nd SSD Drive, so I have two Samsung 840 Pro's each with 512GB in my MacBook Pro. His just has one Samsung 840 Pro with 512GB. We both use Focusrite Saffire Liquid 56 Firewire Audio Interfaces, and we both use Logic Studio 9 Academic. I don't know if you need to know what we are using in order to help us figure out how to configure the MacBooks for a live session, so I figured I would give you those details just in case. If you need any more information, just let me know? Oh, we both have high speed cable Internet connections. Mine is 150Mbps speed which is the absolute fastest I can get in my area. And his is only a 50Mbps speed line.
Again, what we are looking to do is have a LIVE recording session, in Logic, with him at his house and me at my house. When we FaceTime each other, we can pretty much hear each others keyboards as if they were part of the conversation, and as crystal clear as we can hear our own when recording, but we can't seem to record enable an Audio track in Logic and route that keyboard signal into Logic and record it so we can engineer each other without either one of us having to drive to the others house, to be there to do it. If any of this even makes sense, I'm not quite sure how to better explain it. So hopefully you get what I mean, otherwise just say so, and I will try to do a better job explaining it.  :-)
Anyone who can help us with this little problem would be greatly appreciated, and quite a hero in these two humble Musicians Worlds!! So from both of us, THANK YOU in advance for any input you might be able to give us. I look forward to hearing any and all suggestions.
    Scott

    Hey Scott
You and ALOT of people are attempting to do this, myself included.
Unfortunately at this point (to my knowledge) it's a pretty CRAP setup involved that will likely leave you frustrated.
    HOWEVER:
A few things CAN be done:
IF you are getting live audio from your partner over the internet, you can re-direct that audio directly into Logic using a program called SoundFlower.
There are a few alternatives to SoundFlower, like JackTrip, and.....(the name eludes me)
(SoundFlower is from a company called Cyling 74 who also makes Max MSP. )
Once in Logic, you set your audio inputs to the track to be Soundflower. (either 16 inputs, or in this case 2)
That all being said, regardless to speed, you are still going to experience latency in the connection, and THAT is the part that will likely drive you to the mad house.
THIS all being said, I believe there are websites out there that are set up to actually do this kind of thing, (at least there WERE) but likely membership costs, and other "hidden" problems that you only learn about after you have signed on the dotted line. (Hopefully I am wrong?)
If you don't need to do a "live jam", there are always solutions like DropBox that work very well for exchanging large files quickly.
If you want to record live MIDI input from his keyboard, I am unaware of any solutions for this.
Due to the popularity of the iPad, you might want to look into the App store, and see if there is something available.
    Good luck!

  • Why do i keep getting the "internet connection timeout" error message?

i have been upgrading a few standard itunes albums to itunes plus versions through my 3g mobile broadband connection, while not exactly a fast process, it was working fine until i started to get a backlog of 3 or 4 albums which were waiting in a queue to be downloaded, now every time i do the "check for downloads" option i get the "internet connection timed out" error message...this has been going on for 2 days! am i right in suspecting the backlog of albums is too much for my 3g mobile broadband connection? this is really doing my head in, if any of you techies could help me, it'd be much appreciated...?

yes i have recently updated to itunes 8.2.1, but i am starting to think its apple's servers (i tried to download at my brothers house...different computer and connection...same connection timeout error), because it will still let me download an album, but not necessarily all of the tracks. when i questioned itunes customer services about the seemingly hit and miss state of affairs with downloading, they told me to wait 3 weeks before trying to download the tracks that were giving me the grief (2 tracks from an arctic monkeys album)...which kinda indicates they know there is a problem and are trying to fix it, why else would they say wait 3 wks??? they gave me 5 free music tracks too, which is handy.

  • Lost Mode and Play Sound are "Pending."  However, iCloud indicates that it connected and backed up to iCloud at a date that is 1 week after it went missing.  How is this possible without locking (Lost Mode Pending an internet connection)

    Hi,
My wife lost her iPhone two weeks ago while on vacation in London (cell service inoperative in foreign country).  Using Find My iPhone app on my device, I activated Lost Mode and Play Sound.  However, both are listed as "Pending," since it those actions require the phone to connect to the internet (wifi only due to no cellular data coverage.).
We recently returned home and purchased a new iPhone.
However, when looking to restore the apps/settings from her old phone using a previous iCloud backup, iCloud indicates that the old phone connected to iCloud and backed up the original phone at a date that is 1 week after it went missing.  How is this possible without locking (Lost Mode Pending an internet connection)?
If the phone was activated and connected to the internet via a wifi signal, shouldn't it immedately lock, show up on the map, Play Sound, and send me an email that the phone has been found?
I also read somewhere that if running iOS 7, the iCloud website interface enables you to track previous locations, for instance if the phone moves from wifi hotspot to hotspot.  Is that true?  If so, how do I do that?
Thank you for your time, and have a great day!
    Sincerely,
    - Matt

just giving this a wee bump as time is of the essence here and i need advice/ answers quick!
apologies if i've broke any rules!

What is dropping I guess is the question? Is it wireless? Is it your WAN connection? You need to identify where the problem is.
To do that you need to try a few things.
    1. If you use wireless then bypass it and use ethernet if that is possible.. even just drag things around so you can test if ethernet fixes it. If so and wireless is in fact the problem.. then you can do a few things.
    2. Wireless issues with the 7.6.4 firmware are common. Did you upgrade about the time the problems started? I am afraid the bad news is, downgrading is not like in the past where it fixed things.. 7.6.4 seems to have some permanent effect on the TC and it is never quite the same again. How this is even possible I have yet to determine.
The usual fix is factory reset.
Set wireless with short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Different name for 5ghz.
Make sure security is WPA Personal  with pure alphanumeric password of 8-20 characters.. unless you are more paranoid.
Fix the wireless channels and test in order. 11, 8, 6, 1
And for 5ghz try the lowest channel, 36 and then a high one, around 150.
    3. No improvement factory reset again.. downgrade to 7.6.1 or even 7.5.2 if it is an older Gen4 .. at 18months it might be old enough.. no harm trying. Factory reset again after the downgrade to see if we can get rid of the memory effect.. then try the above steps again.
No luck.. whatever the upgrade did it did permanently.. no fix is available until Apple pushes out a new firmware to fix what they did in the last one. Buy a different wireless router for now and use the TC in bridge just for TM backups.

  • Suddenly, my MBP Won't get an internet connection through my routers

I've had my MBP 15" 2.4 for about three months now, and I've never had a problem connecting to the internet. This morning I booted it up, but when I went to get on a wireless connection it would connect, but still say I had no internet. I have two routers in my house - the main one on one side, and my old iMac in my room (my room is too far from the main router to get signal), and the MBP won't get internet from either. However, as you can see by me posting this topic, I'm getting clear internet through the ethernet cable. An error message in connecting to the wireless signal has also appeared a few times. Lastly, my MBP is running very slowly this morning, and there's lots of lag for the track pad.
At first, I thought it was the main router's problem. But since the iMac's Airport isn't providing internet connection either, it leads me to believe it's something with the MBP. I'm not sure what to do, and I'd greatly appreciate any help I could get.

Sorry to hear about the signal dropping. I don't have a solution but would like hear if anyone has an idea what's going on.
My situation is similar. I have an Airport Extreme (n) and the MBP would drop its connection to it randomly. I've gone to pains to change my phone from using any close freq to the wireless.

  • Can't share internet connection via firewire - missing something obvious?

I have my G4 933 connected via ethernet to a Dynalink RTA100+ DSL modem/router. Would like to share this internet connection with anther G4 450 (time warp here) over firewire until I sort a proper router... both are running on 10.4.11
I connected the computers with firewire cable and configured the firewire ports Manually (as I couldn't get DHCP to populate them in the right range).
Tried initially turning on Personal File and Web Sharing on each, but couldn't get a Ping to go through g4 to g4, even though I can see each firewire port's ip in each other's routing table info...
Also turned on Internet Sharing over Firewire port from Ethernet but G4 450 can't connect.
Read somewhere that you can't do both, so have reverted to just trying to get the Internet Sharing working (as that's all the kids really want on their computer!)
Dug around in the modem for ages tried it in Bridge mode, couldn't connect either computer to internet then so have gone back to normal PPP settings with DHCP.

Now, nothing is actually connecting at all, yet when I do a Netstat of the Routing Table info, the firewire IPs are showing up on each G4...but still no ping, no internet.
All suggestions appreciated as I've been searching around the internet to no avail today!
    Cheers
    Rose

    Hi Rose,
You can't Manually set the IPs for Internet Sharing according to Apple, (I've done it, but not consistently),
You do want the G4/450 to use DHCP, the G4/933 will likely end up handing out an IP to the 450 of 192.168.2.4, (one higher in the 3rd & 4th place, and wont work if the 933 started out as x.x.2.x), but it must do it itself to keep track of NAT within itself.
True you can't do both File & Internet Sharing at once.
On the G4/933, en0/Ethernet needs to be dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations. On the G4/450, fw0/Firewire needs to be dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.
Internet Sharing needs to be OFF on the 450 & rebooted if it was ON.
As far as the Setting not sticking, there may be more, but Trash these two files on the 933 then Reboot...

  • Mavericks Internet connected printer filter failed - where

    Help!!
Until Mavericks I printed from my macbook pro laptop to a HP1100c (parallel-port interface) internet connected on my old generic laptop running Ubuntu
Been doing this since Leopard and worked through OS updates since then without any problems. Now on Mavericks I get "Filter failed"
I can't remember exactly how it runs - I know at one point I was using Gutenberg and I have Gutenprint 5.2 installed in /usr/share and these libs
    /usr/lib/libgutenprint.1.1.1.dylib
    /usr/lib/libgutenprint.1.dylib
    /usr/lib/libgutenprint.2.0.3.dylib
    /usr/lib/libgutenprint.a
    /usr/lib/libgutenprint.la
    /usr/libexec/cups/driver/gutenprint.5.2
    /usr/libexec/cups/filter/rastertogutenprint.5.2
but I also have some guten stuff under macports. I long since stopped maintaining macports and it would be a major effort for me to delve into updating it.
Anyone point me in a good direction - like everyone I need a quick fix that doesn't involve delving into how to update macports (is it even running that subsystem - I don't know now). Sure I can deal with these low level things but I have a life too - I just want it to work - understanding macports etc. again is dead time.
Come to that I lost track of how to configure printing on  the ubuntu half of this too (though that didn't change).  It would help enormously if I knew where it was failing - what does "Filter failed" mean. It might mean some shell script somewhere failing - if so where, what subsystem ?

Have you tried using GutenPrint 5.2.9?
    Hope this helps.
