Track order mystery

Hey everyone.
I know iTunes has become more flexible with sorting features recently, but I have no idea why a recent issue has cropped up. I've checked throughout the forums and can't seem to find an answer. I found an Apple tech article that describes my problem, but the solutions described don't work.
Here's what's wrong:
I pre-ordered Year Zero (by Nine Inch Nails) a few weeks ago. Track 3 downloaded immediately (as it was supposed to). I downloaded the rest of the album today. Of course, because track 3 downloaded as a "single" I had to rename the album from "Survivalism - Single" to "Year Zero." I also made sure the # of tracks was the same for all the files and the artist was spelled the same for all files. Despite all of this, the track refuses to get into line between tracks 2 & 4. Track 3 simply sits at the very END of the entire album, Year Zero (so, the tracks go 1,2,4-17,3). The only fields that are different between the album tracks and the single are the release date. The year, album, artist, album artist fields are all the same. There is no data in any of the "sort artist," "sort album," "sort album artist" fields. None of the tracks are marked "compilation."
Does anyone have any idea why iTunes won't put track 3 in slot 3 of this album? I'm stumped!

I tried that as well. All the fields are blank for
the album and the single. I even tried entering in
the same info for all the tracks, but still nothing.
Did you retype the info for all the tracks at the same time? Sometimes there'll be a space or capitalized letter or something that you missed, so selecting all the tracks and changing them en masse fixes the problem. Fields that are different on different tracks will be blank.
I CAN get track 3 to move into the album if I sort
Album by Year. But normally I just have my library
sorted by Artist.
That's odd — sorting by Artist should actually sort Artist - Album (alphabetically) - Track Number, whereas Album by Year sorts Artist - Album (by Year of the first track) - Track Number. Not that different. In fact, I think the only difference between sorting by Artist and Album by Artist is that the latter sorts compilations to the end of your library. (Your single isn't marked as part of a compilation, perchance, is it?)

  • How can I re-sort my albums both chronologically and in track order?

    Hi all,
All of a sudden, the correct album track order on my iPod Classic has gone haywire!
I have many, many playlists, containing albums by all my favourite bands, arranged in chronological order. This means that I can start playing the Beatles (for instance) with "Please Please Me", and work my way through to "Let It Be:Naked", playing each album in its turn, with the track listing of each album in their original order.
Of course, I have to tell iTunes to sort "Album by Artist/Year" to achieve this end, and up until just recently, things have been fine. Most of my 250+ artist-dedicated playlists are sorted this way.
Now, all of a sudden, I find that the track order within these albums in iTunes are appearing in a completely random order. The only way I can get the correct track sequence back again is to re-sort the list by "Album" which re-arranges the albums alphabetically, but that does not list them chronologically....
I have tried re-sorting the chronologically dated and named albums by clicking the column header, and when it comes up with sorted by "Album by Artist / Year" (which is where it ONCE was all automatically sorted into correct sequence of track numbers) now, it comes up with all the album tracks in random order, within each album.. It sorts the albums into the correct chronological order, but the tracks within these albums are all messed up.
As I said earlier, if I choose to sort each playlist simply "By Album", then all the tracks on each album are in the correct order, so I KNOW that the correct ID Tag info is still there..
Until now, I have been able to pride myself on (usually) being able to manage the sometimes quirky moods of iTunes, which I have been using for over a decade - but I have never had this problem before.
Please also note that all my 23,000+ tracks have album dates, track numbers, artists, groupings, genres, play counts, and most also have cover images.
This week, I have downloaded and re-installed iTunes 10.6.3.25, but still no change.
Does anyone have any thoughts as to what I can do to get things back the way they were again?
    Many thanks,
    Rusty Shay

    Hello there,
    Hi there Chris CA,
    Many thanks for your reply.
I just tried using the column browser as you suggested, but it remains the same.
I can either have the albums by any one artist sorted alphabetically - with the tracks in the correct sequence....
Or I can have the albums sorted by year of release - with the tracks in random order....
    But not both!
The most curious thing is that all playlists are not affected. Probably three or four out of the 250+ are listed the way I want them all to be.
    It's driving me bloody crazy!

  • How do I get my iPhone to play all albums by any given artist in consecutive album track order like it does on an iPod?

When I select an artist on my iPod Classic and then select "all albums," I can play multiple albums consecutively without losing the track order of each individual album.  On my iPhone 4S, however, when I select an artist there's only the option to select "all songs," and it lists all the tracks alphabetically and plays them in that order, making it impossible to listen to one album followed by another.  It isn't a problem if I select one album at a time, as the tracks then remain in their original order from the album, but it won't keep the proper orderings if I want to play all of the music by an artist and select "all songs."  Is there some way to change it so that when I view all tracks by an artist I can see them and play them in their original intended track order, not in the alphabetical listing order?

Delete the file and re-download again.

  • When trying to upload a cd onto itunes it chooses to chop the original cd into 4 separate albums and mix up the track order. Any ideas why and how to overcome this problem?  ( the cd is guy gerber and called fabric 64)

When uploading a cd onto itunes on my imac it has choosen to copy the original cd into 4 seperate cds and mix up the track order, particularly annoying as this is a mixed cd (Guy Gerber, fabric 64) .  Any ideas why when everthing else copies perfectly and how to rectify this problem?

  • Creative mediasource player - track order prob

I imported a lot of?albums I downloaded from Napster on to the creative mediasource player on my pc. when i try to play albums via this player on my pc the tracks are all out of order (eg track3, track , track2 etc) and I cannot work out how to get them in the right order. i have just looked at a few albums and just realised that it is sorting the tracks in alphabetical order of the track names, not track number. anybody got any ideas how to get it in track order?thanks

Just click on the column header to sort by Track Number. Creative MediaSource will play in the order that you see.

  • Creative MP3 player plays songs alphabetically instead of in track order

I use a Creative Nomad Zen 20GB USB 2.0 MP3 player with iTunes 7. Lately, songs listed in the correct track order on a given album in iTunes show up listed and get played in alphabetical order when copied to the Zen.
Any way in iTunes around this? I've been using XNJB, but it seems like it should be do-able in iTunes - especially since I wasn't having this problem in previous versions.
I've searched the forum but seem to have missed what is probably a common issue. Please point me to the right thread if this is the case.

  • Organising by date added in track order

    hi.
i have my itunes organised by date added so i can see whats newest in my library.
the only issue is that it doesnt list the tracks in the right order in the album and sometimes splits each album into smaller batches of tracks.
is there a solution to this?
    thanks

There is no general solution for what you want, but if you sort your CDs in reverse track order before you rip them it should work as you want. For multi-disc albums, rip the last disc first. When purchasing albums from iTunes pause the downloads and then download the tracks one by one in reverse order. If importing content from your hard drive then these can also be dragged in one at a time (must be at least one second apart) in reverse track order.
The above assumes you want the most recently added album sorted at the top, with its tracks in a natural playback order.

  • Change tempo, not track order or placement!

    Hi all!
I've got a big problem, a buddy of mine and I just recorded tracks off of his HD-recorder into Logic Express! We need to make back tracks for live use.
Unfortunately he does not remember the tempo of the songs. And we need to put a click on there. "Songs are recorded using a metronome, and drum machine".
My first thought was to take the drum track, cut tight to the first beat at the very beginning of the audio file, place it at the vere beginning of a bar, dragging all the other tracks along, to keep them in order, and change the songs BPM to fit the drum track. But when I change the arragements BPM, all the other tracks really mess up and starts to come in wrong, and so on.
What do I do to keep my track order and still be aple to fit the BPM? I've tried cutting out a slice of the drum track and using the apple + T command, but same thing happens, the tracks are knocked about like crazy.
    Thank you

That's not the concept of "tempo" in GB - it always applies to the whole song. So the loops adjust to the tempo you set, and all other regions vary their tempo if you make the whole song faster or slower.
What exactly are you planning to do? It doesn't make much sense to have the guitar playing in a different tempo from the drums ...
If you want to adjust the tempo of another soundclip (that is not a loop) to your song, there's audio editors like SoundStudio or Audacity that can do that a lot easier.

  • Track order of my album out of order

    Hello,
I am having issues with my song order on my itunes.
Usually when I put my songs of a certain album in my itunes and click the album tab at the top the songs are in order by track number in my album, but for one of my albums its in a completely messed up order and I can't figure out why.
What I have tried so far:
-I used the "get info" and made sure that the track number is there in order (1-20) for each song.
-For the track number I also tried listing it as 1 of 20, 2 of 20, 3 of 20...etc but it has no effect.
-I used "get info" and tried typing 1 of 1 for the disc number for each song in my album but it did nothing so I changed it back to what it was, (it doesn't say anything)
-I even renamed my songs starting with a 1-20 corresponding to its track number, nothing changed.
-I even did this to the song files on my computer with windows media player so the files themselves have the correct track number and numbering in song name, I used the "Advanced tag editor" on WMP.
    - I sync songs manually by dragging the songs into my "music" under my ipod, not my itunes library, this always worked except for this album, I tried syncing my songs about 5 or so times
-I use a windows XP 2005 edition and the new nano ipod
    Other info:
-The album name is the same for each song, so all the songs are in the same album.
-It is set to album, not album by year or artist or anything else.
-It is not on shuffle, the order is physically out of order so when i play it on "play once" or similar it's suppose to go on to the next song in that track order but since it's in a messed up order it plays in that messed up order where normally on a normal un-messed up order album it would play the next track number in order since it is in order on my itunes.
    Other info 2:
-I do not want to make a playlist, I want the album in order on my itunes so when I'm using my ipod I can just go that album and play the songs according to track number.
-The reason why I want it into order a lot is because this album is a "gapless megamix" which means when the songs transaction into the next song is unnoticeable since the song transact into the next song without pausing, so basically it is like one big, one hour song when actually composed of 20 songs, so the album must be in order.
So in a nut shell I just want my album's songs to be in track order.
    Thanks

Sorry for double posting but I wanted this to be in a different post
Ok, after hours and hours of hurting my head I found the solution to this.
The problem is that in the "sort" tab under the "get info" section is that there are 2 sections for artists, one is just "artist" and the other is "album artist."
When you erase the "album artist" the track number reorders itself correctly, so I just needed to leave "artist" and delete the "album artist."
Now my track order is not messed up.
Hopefully this may help other people who are having the same issue.

  • Audiobooks in the "music" app display tracks in alphabetical, not actual track order

Since updating my iPad 1 to iOS 5.0.1 my audiobooks (Teaching Company) display in the "music" app in alphabetical, not actual track order.  They display correctly in iTunes from my synced computer.  I've tried designating them as compilations and not as compilations, and either way, the same result.  Further, when I hit play on the first track listed, it does not go to the second track, rather it just stops.

  • Is there a way to edit track order in the new info window?

The "Get Info" window changed for version 12.1, and in the process, the "track number" fields were eliminated. Is there still a way to edit track order on albums, or has that option been taken away entirely?

Okay. I'm still on iTunes 11.4.

To see more info about an item, select it and choose File > Get Info. Get Info has been completely redesigned in iTunes 12 to focus your attention only on what’s necessary for the selected item.
If you’d like to add a field that isn’t visible, click Add Field in the lower-left corner of the Get Info window. You can select additional fields and set fields you’d like to always show. In iTunes 12, Get Info opens on the Details tab, and information about the file can be found on the File tab."

  • Fix track order on itunes 11

Please please please can anybody help me sort out album track order in iTunes 11!?!  After I upgraded, the track order on hundreds of my albums became jumbled and there doesn't seem to be any rationale or pattern to this jumbling. As far as I can see, every album that is numbered 01, 02, 03 etc (as opposed to simply 1, 2, 3 etc) is jumbled. I've asked two individual iTunes support people for information and/or suggestions - one didnt respond; the other's response was that I should use the fee-based AppleCare system. Why in the name of all that's holy should I be referred to a paid service when it's Apple's own upgrades that has caused problems that previously didn't exist!?! Everything was fine on iTunes 10. After the most recent iPhone and iPad upgrade, Home Sharing doesn't work on those devices. And, apart from other aspects of iTunes 11, every time I now reduce to the dock, I have to Quit, wait a moment, then start iTunes all over again before the window will come back up for me. My faith in Apple is dwindling by the day ... Anyhow - any help with the jumbled track-order issue will be much appreciated, thanks.

  • Music playlist track order... iTunes vs ATV 2nd Gen

Streaming music from my iTunes Library to new 2nd Gen AppleTV: When I attempt to listen to a music playlist from my iTunes library through AppleTV, the track order within the ATV playlist does not match that of the playlist in my iTunes library. The songs within the ATV playlists are always sorted alphabeticaly by song title and do not match the sorting of playlists in my iTunes library.
I contacted an Express Lane advisor about this, case number 186510612, and was politely advised that there's apparently no solution. The advisor recommended that I submit feedback (which I did).
Track order on a music playlist is very important for several reasons. Any suggestions?

I couldn't agree more. I, too, have been an Apple/Mac user from the beginning. This seemed like such an elementary issue that I was convinced I was missing something simple. Evidently not, based on your experience and the response I got from tech support. I encourage you to report this issue in "feedback" http://www.apple.com/feedback/ and maybe Apple will fix it in a software update.
For now, ATV is almost unusuable for streaming live album playlists with "intro" tracks. Moreover, studio album track order on ATV does not correspond with that intended by the album producer which, in itself, denegrates the artistic experience.

  • Album Track Order Problem

I have recently noticed that the track order in some of my albums has gone all screwy. Even though when I go to >Get Info, and verify that the track order and disk number is correct, they don't appear in the order listed.
For Example, when I sort by album, the tracks now appear in this order:
    Track 7
    Track 11
    Track 13
    Track 5
    Track 1
    Track 2
    Track 3, etc...
I realized there were some issues with iTunes version 7, and have updated to version 7.0.1, but even after I have reput the track info they still appear out of order.
Dell Dimension 8400   Windows XP   Recently updated from iTunes 7 to iTunes 7.0.1

Ahh... yep, that was it. Never would've even bothered to change those, because I didn't think it would effect the track order..
    ^_^ Thanks a bunch.

  • ITunes Album Track Order

I basically spend 8 hr a day listening to iTunes and I have a really frustrating issue that I can't imagine should be as difficult to get around - but I can't seem to figure it out.
I buy quite a bit of music either through emusic, itunes or cd's. Since I had probably 1/2 dozen albums a week, I ideally want to open itunes and just start listening to the last album I imported (in order) followed by the 2nd most recent album, etc -- and ideally listen for my entire workday. The problem is multifaceted:
    1. Emusic automatically imports music I download. It processes them in reverse order, which is good since it makes song #1 the most recent "date added" which allows me to sort by "date added" and listen in order. Unfortunately, since it processes multiple songs at a time, shorter songs beat the song before it -- and it makes a mess of the track order. They get numbered correctly, but they're "date added" are incorrect -- which messes up my listening order.
    2. When I import a CD, it starts at track 1 -- making it impossible to use the "dated added"field as a sort.
    3. I believe Itunes acts like a cd on importing, so again the order is bungled.
I have about 6,000 songs so I don't think it's feasible to change each CD one by one, but I can't imagine there isn't some way to just listen to my newest album, in order, then my next newest, etc.
Does anyone know if there's a way to do this? I can't imagine I'm the only person who listens to music this way. Right now, I wind up filtering to the album, sorting by track, and listening to CD's one by one. I can get through like 20 albums in a day, so this it makes it really tought to get into a flow at work.
This has bothered me for well over a year, and I've searched many discussion groups and haven't come across any similar threads -- so I decided to just ask flat out.
Any help would be incredible, thank you.

hmmm... I didn't realize that was an option, but that definitely helps. I guess part two can be to request emusic to NOT IMPORT automatically, and I can just load the tracks in reverse order.
Of course that helps moving forward, but I guess I'm stuck with out of order imports on the existing library (not the end of the world).
I really wish Itunes would allow a secondary sort to allow us to sort albums and just leave the track numbers alone -- I'd say 99% of the time, people want the album tracks in order, so it's silly to have most of the sort options mess with that order.
