Track pad responsive at first then erratic

18 month old 16 inch macbook pro.  Track pad responsive when computer first turned on then after a few minutes track pad erratic and unresponsive.  Cursor floats, stubborn movement.  When external mouse plugged in, all works fine.  How much does it cost to replace track pad?   Any first aid tips?

It could also be a swollen battery, that is pushing at the trackpad. By the way, Apple has no 16" MBP.

  • Brand new Satellite C50-A -02T No Track Pad Response

    Hello;      Just took a brand new Satellite C50-A -02T (PSCF6C-02T002) out of the box and the trackpad does not work.  Windows 8 OS.  Hooked up an external mouse and; Updated the trackpad drivers from the Toshiba site, no luck.Updated windows, no luck.Updated to windows 8.1, no luck.Googled the issue and tried the 'pull battery, press power button, replace battery, press f2...' but it just boots back to windows, does not go into the bios...I bought 2 of these on clearance after christmas and have been using one with no issue since then.  My parents need a new laptop so I pulled this one out and was going to set it up for them but cannot get the bloody track pad to work. Any help out there? Thanks;

Just to add a couple things: CANNOT get into the BIOS after pulling the battery and holding the power button.  It ignores my attempt (have tried 6 times) and can get into the bios any other time I try. When I go into the control panel and click on mouse it tells me 'Unable to connect to the synaptics Pointing Device Driver'  I have uninstalled and reinstalled it twice now with no success. It does not show up in the device driver list.About to take the nuclear option and reinstall windows...

  • HT4321 I have tried the recommended remedies for the magic track pad and it is still erratic, any other suggestions? Is is defected?

It sounds like you disabled the guest network from your AirPort Express using AirPort Utility.....but you did not delete the network from the stored settings on your Mac.
We have no way of knowing what the "various instructions given by other members" might have included, but if you have not already done so on your Mac......
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Network
Click on Wi-Fi on the left
Click Advanced at the lower right
Here you will see a list of networks that your Mac has joined in the past
Click on the name of the guest network to highlight it
Click the - (minus) button at the bottom of the network list to delete that entry
Do the same if there are other networks that you no longer need
Click OK at the lower right of the window
Click Apply at the lower right of the next window
    Close the windows
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > KeyChain Access
Locate a listing with the name of the guest network
Click on that listing to highlight it
Click the Delete key on your Mac
Click Delete in the window that appears
    Close the windows
    Restart your Mac now

  • My track pad is not responsive

Since updating to Mountain Lion my trackpad on my MacBook Pro is not immediately responsive to trackpad clicks. I often have to click on a link or button many times before I get a response.I am using the latest Safari version. Track Pad responsiveness is poor or non existant for all apps.

System Preferences > Trackpad > Point & Click
    Tap to click
Click in the box next to it, to enable the feature.
    Best.

  • My track pad is not working. The computer has been off for 10 days and I changed the batteries

Can someone help me with my iMac track pad?  My computer has been off for 10 days and when I turned it on the curser will not move.  The green light on the track pad would come on then off so i replaced the batteries in the track pad but it still does not work.  Not sure if the grandchildren were on it over the holidays could something be locked on the keyboard?

    1. Make sure that battery is in normal condition.
    2. Shut down the computer.
Clean the trackpad with moist not wet microfiber cloth.
System Preferences > Point & Click
Try turning off three finger dragging and then turning it on after  testing.
    3. Is there any Bluetooth device nearby with failing batteries? If so, replace the batteries.
      4. Reset PRAM:   http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14222
    5. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    6. Close all windows and quit all applications.
Click the Spotlight -the magnifying glass icon- in the menu bar. Enter Disk utility in the box.
Select Disk Utility. When the Disk utility window opens up,
select  Macintosh HD, then First Aid.
        Click Repair Disk  Permission
        Ignore the  time remaining estimate.
Last 1 minute may take longer.

To be specific. I have the imac late 2013 model, and i just bought the trackpad this October 2014. I have been using magic mouse without any problem. I just want to have a new experience with the trackpad.  Any time i on my imac, i will have a normal screen with my picture and a guest column at the center. I need to click either my picture or the guest in order to have the space where i can key in my password with the keyboard. But unfortunately, my trackpad will show that it is connected and the cursor will be moving in front of the screen if i touch the trackpad, but if i try to click, i will get no response. I have to put back batteries inside my magic mouse and then click on my picture if i want to log in with my id or i click on the guest image if i want to log in as a guest. it is only after this that my trackpad will start responding.
i want to use only trackpad for now so as to be more efficient with it. I don't want to be putting back batteries inside the magic mouse only to on my imac. I need a solution please.
    Thanks.

It sounds like you have assigned the primary click on the trackpad to something else, perhaps a gesture.
Use your mouse, login and then open the Trackpad preference pane and see how you have the interface configured.
Oh and you can have both the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad powered up and working at the same time. No need to keep moving batteries around.

  • Erratic track pad pointer.

Hi new to the community. First post. I have a 2012 Macbook Pro (15 inch). I am running OS X Yosemite. For no reason at all, all of a sudden the track pad arrow is erratic and highlights words and gives the dictionary definition, moves the pages around and is driving me nuts! I am not a computer geek. I just want it to work. Any suggestions?

Hi. you can read this link for some possible solutions.  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203171 You could also try a pram reset. Command/Option/P/R keys at startup for three chimes.

  • I have recently noticed that my MacBook Pro Retina keeps freezing.  I first noticed that the track pad would not work for short periods of time.  Is anyone else having a problem?

My MacBook Pro Retina keeps freezing up.  It seems that it is happening more often as time goes on.
I first noticed that the track pad would freeze then whole computer would completly freeze.
    Most annoying.
Is anyone else having a similar problem?

    Hey B-bram,
For issues with video resolution not being consistent, I would start with resetting the NVRAM on your MacBook Pro. That will reset the resolution to its default as well as resetting other default settings like sound volume and start up volume. Take a look at the article below for more information about that and how to perform the NVRAM reset.

  • With snow leopard, basic keyboard functions like double clicking on a desktop item now require me to hold control and then click on the track pad.  I'm trying to recall, I seem to remember Leopard allowing you to double click items to open them?

I notice in iPhoto that if I used to be able to single/double click on a photo to view it but now if I click CONTROL and then the TRACK PAD, the options don't allow me to open JUST that photo in nearly full page format.  Any suggestions?

"nearly full page" means that I used to be able to double click on a photo in iPhoto, and it would open up to a full image within iPhoto itself.  Now, there is absolutely no option to enlarge a photo unless you go to slideshow - no option to double click or side click or Control+click or Command+click or anything at all.  The small white arrow at the bottom right corner of every photo gives you options, but none are options that include enlarging a photo to see it bigger.  And no, you cannot double click it at all to even open it up in any other app unless you click/drag onto desktop and then open in Photoshop, or equivalent app. Yes, checked TP preferences.  No, it doesn't help.

  • OS X 4.6 - Erratic Track Pad

Just installed OS 10.4.6 on my four macs. I had no problems except my 15" Alum. PowerBook G4 (1.5 ghz, 1 gb Ram) where my track pad has become very erratic to the point of not being useful. The cursor movement is very erratic. Yet the cursor moves smoothly when I use a USB mouse.
Rebuilt permissions several times including using the original OS 10.4.3 disc. All to no avail.
By the way, the update went without a problem on my iBook (1.33 ghz, 1 gb Ram).
    Any suggestions?

I have read that after updating, you should only repair permissions from the desktop disk utility, not the original install disk.
Try disk utility>Repair Disk from the install disk.

  • HT203171 Track pad is erratic, sometimes scrolling without touching the pad. Also highlighting chunks of my Thesis with the touch of a finger. Frustrating because I have accidentally deleted during this out of control mechanism with the track pad.

My Mac Book Air has developed an erratic process with the track pad. Sometimes the page scrolls without touching the pad, great chunks of my Thesis can be highlighted and sometimes I delete without realising. Does anyone else have this problem. The Tech wants to replace my track pad today, not sure what to do?

  • Erratic cursor and track pad when using 220v on MBA

    Hello
I am travelling in Europe with my MBA, and I have noticed that when it is plugged into a 220v outlet the whole case has a slight electric charge (and a very slight vibration), this apparently makes the track pad very erratic, with the cursor jumping all over when I try to move it.  I have resorted to unplugging the MBA when I want to use.
    Any thoughts/solutions on this?
    Thank you,
    Peter

3 prong grounded extension cord may help.
    Best.
