Tracking down the cause of a DuplicateDeliver email (Exchange 2010 SP2 RU8)
I am in the process of tracking down the reason an email is showing DuplicateDeliver in the message tracking logs (and not arriving in the client's mailbox). I have been attempting to search for the original message based upon the message ID or even
the Internal message ID is not producing any results.
The issue stems from an application that will send a batch of 18 emails to a specific mailbox with status messages and attachments. Periodically one of the 18 messages will not make it to the mailbox. I managed to trace the latest missing email through
our MTA, to the receive connector on our hub server (Exchange 2010 SP2 RU8) and finally to the message tracking logs where I see this:
Source : STOREDRIVER
EventId : DUPLICATEDELIVER
I have read threads on attempting to track this down based on the message ID's and have read the EHLO blog post on how/why DuplicateDeliver happens...now I just need to figure out why this application is having this happen periodically.
Any suggestions on how find the missing piece of the puzzle would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
MT
Hi Ravenmike,
Duplicatedeliver event occurs if the sender domain is send email with the same message ID to exchange server. By default the duplicate detection is set to 1 hour and these event after
generated by store.
For more information about duplicate detection, please check below article on Exchange team blog:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2004/07/14/183132.aspx
Do we have additional third party mail server? It maybe the third party mail server which sending multiple email with same message ID to Exchange.
Hope it is helpful
Thanks

Is there a way to track down the cause of crashes in SAFARI?
Not long ago I was able to eliminate one type of crash I had been having in SAFARI by following a suggestion made in this forum. Those crashes, however, were of the type that generated a 'crash report.' So they left a kind of 'paper trail' as to what was causing them.
More recently I have been having frequent crashes that don't result in such reports. These crashes occur apparently randomly when I mouseclick on a link. The spinning beach ball appears on-screen and never leaves.
Is there a way to find out exactly what is causing these crashes?
Thanks.Hello Michael:
I have not yet seen a
good approach to using that information (short of
deleting the account).
better search some yourself Barry <G>
if something runs fine in another account - one can isolate the cause to one of the plist files in the main acct Home/Library/Preferences/ or possibly an add-on in Home/Library/Internet Pug-Ins or ...Input Managers for example.
If there is the same problem in the new acct - you can discount anything with the main acct user library - plists, caches, plugins, input managers, the whole lot.
A useful tool is Console - found in Applications/Utilities/ keep it running while the 'problem' in question crops up & see if any messages pop up in either the system log or console log. Sometimes these will point straight at the problem area, other times no help at all. -
Mavericks ruined battery life - Tracking down the cause? Mismatched RAM?
My 2011 MacBook Pro 13" is only at 245 out of 1000. My battery life was easily 7 hours until I upgraded to Mavericks. Now I'm lucky to see 5. Right now I'm sitting at 4 and I just barely took it off the charger.
No I'm not running a crapload of apps. Currently, Safari and Mail are the only ones open. I used to run lots more apps on Lion and still acheive 7 hours battery life.
I have disabled a number of background process such as automatic updates and the like. My Bluetooth is off. My infrared remote receiver is off. All in all, I consider myself decently adept at keeping thigns running efficiently.
I'm stumped. Could it be that I am running mismatched RAM sticks? I have 10GB total, 2GB+8GB.
I've done lots of reading, this issue seems to hit people at random. Some people report almost 9 hours of battery with Mavericks, others report that their battery performance has taken a hit.
Could this issue be related to the slow-sleep issue that lots of Mavericks users are experiencing? (Search com.apple.iohideventsystem.queue.tickle in Google; this process is causing a lot of sleep-grief for people)
Is there a terminal command that shows what is going on with my battery?Forgot to mention, I tried a SMC reset. Twice. No change.

Track down the culprit that resets the system tray customization in Windows 7
The question is duplicated from http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/track-down-the-culprit-that-resets-the-system-tray/7cff4c95-4d08-4a7f-b29d-ce67d8cd6247 as suggested by a support engineer.
Hi Almighty All,
For a while I'm experiencing problems with my system tray. Something regularly resets my customization, i.e. after reboot sometimes all icons that I marked as to show always are hidden again. I found out that the reason is that something erases HCU\Software\Classes\Local
Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify.
I decided to find out what is responsible. I turned on auidt policy for objects, then I setup audit for HCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify. The next time the icons customization was reset I found out
that HCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify was cleared again and on top of that the audit settings were gone! So I thought maybe something just removed the whole key altogether with the audit settings on the
way.
My next attempt was to set audit on HCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software and just let Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify inherit it. The next time the icons customization was reset I found out that HCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify
was cleared again and on top of that the audit settings were gone again! Something removed the whole HCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software?
The Event Log points out to one of the svchost.exe processes, which is just a container for the whole bunch of different services.
Any idea how to find out what service is responsible?
Dei nostra Matrix est.Hi,
Interesting issue, what about other configuration or settings? Do they work fine or keep reverting after a reboot? Have you tested this issue in another user account? What is the result?
Regarding to unable to save settigs for current user hive, I doubt whether there's an application you installed recently or an malware\virus changes the permission of registry entry or value of registry keys like
HKCU\Software\Classes which causes this issue.
Yolanda Zhu
TechNet Community Support
Hmm... I don't understand. Nothing is reverting after a reboot, as well I'm
not unable to save settings in the current user's hive. The correspondent registry keys can be saved perfectly fine and they are
deleted, not reverted after a reboot. I pointed to the exact code that does it, the code is located in Microsoft DLL with all certificates and digital signatures intact. Permissions obviously don't matter, since svchost.exe is executed with the highest
integrity level and under the System user account, the keys in question inherit permissions, which allow System to do whatever it needs without restrictions
by default, you can't change it to allow more.
So can you explain how it can be some malware?
The issue is intermittent, I don't have a 100% repro, therefore “testing” under another user account is doubtful.

Tracking down the user who updates a PDP (Project Detail Page)
Hi guys,
I have a custom field called Project Status that is used in some PDP in Project Server. When users update this field, we need to know who did the update. Is there a way to track down the user who populated some info on this field? Does Project Server do
an audit of some sort on these kinds of things?
Thanks.
Regards,
KwaziHi Mike,
Thanks for the response. I want to write a stored procedure to script this though. Do you know which tables holds information about Queue
jobs(?
Thanks.

HT4061 ive found a ipad, how do i go about tracking down the owner please?
ive just returned from a trip overseas, on my arrival at heathrow on dec8th, i come across a ipad in the baggage trolley
i was already running late, so didnt have time to find right place to hand it in, so im trying to find out best way to track down the owner? or hand it in at my local
police station? many thanksYou could contact the baggage department at Heathrow, as someone may have reported it missing, or turn it in to the local police. Usually, if no one claims it after a period of time, it will be yours.
Thanks for your honesty.

When I installed Rollup 8 for Exchange 2010 SP2 it caused an error in EWS
EWS failed with the error:
exchange web service could not load file or assembly Exchange.MailboxReplicationService.ProxyService bad parameter
When I uninstalled the rollup all worked fine again.
Any ideas, Thanks in advance?Hi,
To apply this update rollup, you must have Exchange Server 2010 SP2 installed. And remove all interim updates for Exchange Server 2010 SP2 before you apply this update rollup. Please check your installation deployment by the following article:
Install the Latest Update Rollup for Exchange 2010
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff637981.aspx
Description of Update Rollup 8 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 2
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2903903/en-us
If all requirements and preparations are configured properly, please collect your error logs to check your installation. It would be helpful to post some event logs here for further analysis.

Blank message body when sending or receiving HTML formated emails Exchange 2010
I Have just installed Exchange Server 2010 over the weekend on a customers system. All clients using either Outlook 2003 or 2007 are unable to see any text in the body of emails that are formatted in HTML. If they receive an email formatted as HTML there is no body text, if they send an Plain Text formatted email the recipient sees the text in the body. This problem presents across all Exchange users and affects all HTML formatted emails sent or received since transitioning from Exchange 2007 to 2010. Plain Text and Rich Text email present with no issues. If we import old email via a pst they afre able to see all email text both HTML and plain text. when we access the clients email account via OWA all emails work but then if we go into outlook 2003/2007 and click the email it removes the body text from the email in both the client and OWA have tried Outlook connection issues with Exchange 2010 mailboxes due to RPC encryption requirement
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/2006508 and it made no difference at all.
Thanks
Update: Have just tested further and all pc seem to work ok with either 2003 or outlook 2007 on. The problem only seems to be happening on the remothe desktop services server which has outlook 2007 ( have also tried outlook 2003 with same results)We have just migrated to Exchange 2010 and have had some blank emails come in to our system. We think we have a reason and fix for
it. Hopefully this helps someone else…
Staffs have their own private mailbox (as you would expect) but also share common mailboxes like "Support" and "Info". When an email came
into the inbox on a shared mailbox, it might be blank. Plain text emails seemed to be okay.
We found that when an email came in, it was readable for about two or three seconds (you need to be setup to send a test and check the inbox quickly - we used Outlook 2007 with the reading pane turned on) and then it blanked out!. We checked the incoming
email by using the arrow keys to select it and then select the email below the new email, if you go back and forth between them you can see the good new email suddenly goes blank.
So send another test, but this time make sure the email is set to “Plain Text”. Our email turned up fine, two seconds latter
it had a NOD32 signature appended to the end of it saying that it had been scanned by NOD32 (you may have seen this kind of note appended to the end of emails before).
What appeared to be happening is that one or more users sitting at their desks in Outlook had different settings configured in NOD32 (they
were supposed to be using the server based profile that we control). We thought we had the server doing the AV work, but several of our client PCs had NOD32 enabled to integrate with Outlook. New items received in the shared Inbox’s were being scanned
by the client PCs and having a signature appended which was mucking up the HTML format of the email and Exchange 2010 blanked them out.
Make sure your AV products aren’t corrupting the email formats causing them to be displayed blank. Try tests using OWA only and don't
access the mailbox using Outlook.
Thanks. -
In Exchange 2010 server, we have setup a policy under "Default Archive and Retention Policy" as all messages under "Inbox", "Sent Items" and "Deleted Items" will be Permanently Delete after X months.
However, one of our client found that some of the email messages was still found under his "Deleted Items". All other email messages under her outlook client (2010) were successfully deleted according to the policy.
Is there any reason for this exception?
Thank youHi,
Based on your description, you created retention policy tags for Inbox, Sent Items and Deleted Items folders. Then you linked them to the default archive and retention policy
Default Archive and Retention Policy.
Please check if this issue affects all users.
Please create a different retention policy which is associated with these retention tags, and apply this policy to a test user to check result.
Best regards,
Belinda Ma

Out of Office replies not working for external emails - Exchange 2010, Outlook 2010
Hello.
We have two Exchange 2010 mailbox servers and a third for client access. There are two mailbox databases replicated to both servers as a DAG. There is also one 2003 legacy server that is awaiting decommissioning that is basically just heating the server
room - all the mailboxes have been migrated.
We have recently noticed that out of office replies are no longer working for external recipients, but are being sent for internal users.
I have checked under "Organisation configuration" - "hub transport" - "Remote domains" and made sure that is set to "Allow external out-of-office messages and legacy out-of-office messages"
Looking at the message tracking logs it appears that the out of office reply isn't generated for external users - we do have an external mail filter that inbound and outbound messages are relayed through but that isn't blocking anything.
This was working until recently, and I can't see any errors in the logs that look related. All three servers have been rebooted just in case.
Any suggestions where to look next?Hello,
You can capture a trace log to diagnostic
the OOF issue:
a. Start ExTRA by clicking Run on the Start menu and then entering the following command-line:
Extra.exe
b. On the “Welcome to the Exchange Troubleshooting Assistant” page click Select a task.
c. On the “Troubleshooting Task Selection Screen” page click Trace Control.
d. Click OK to the following prompt alerting you about possible performance problems running a trace:
This server does not have the module needed for interpreting traces.

We have been getting intermittent SCOM alarms for our Exchange 2010 MBX server citing "Indexing backlog reached a critical limit of 48 hours or the number of items in the retry queue is greater than 10000 for one or more databases"
I see events in EventViewer that SCOM is triggering on, but not whats generating the events or how else to test for them.
get-eventlog -computername SERVERNAME -logname "Application" -after "03/14/2013" | ?{$_.eventid -eq "5604"} | select MachineName,EventID,EntryType,Message | ft -autosize
One MS Forum post online says it is a bug in RU4, unclear if it may also be a bug in RU2 (our installed version).

I also tried to check the Performance Viewer for the MSExchange Search Indexer and MXExchange Search Indices but am unsure which of the many metrics would indicate this issue.
We have had no reports of search issues from our users and have been unable to duplicate any impairment in our testing.
Does anyone else have any suggestions for tests to check or steps to take on this alert? Is it simply a false alarm or a timeout of other sorts during testing? We have 80 DAGs on this server (as well as all our servers, some of which have also reported the
same alert) and the Test-ExchangeSearch command times out before completely testing all DAGs.Hi IAMChrisL,
Any updates?

It's difficult to check whether I've entered all of several intended recipients of an email I'm composing. I can scroll up and down, but I can't see the entire list to check for inclusions and duplicates. Please reinstate the pull-down arrow!

Hover your cursor over the addresses. Hopefully a pop-up tooltip thingy will appear listing the addressees.
It's become difficult to see, but if you move the cursor about slowly in the grey area between the addresses and the message text window, you should be able to find the handle that lets you resize the addressing area and thereby see more addresses. Mine reveals its presence by changing to a slightly paler shade of grey.
I do detest the near-zero discoverability in modern GUI design. We seem to be slavishly copying of all the worst features of the Google UI. :-(

Got it! Thanks so much. A little more detail for the benefit of others: you'll find the addressing area resize handle immediately above the white text area, in the narrow part of the grey area below all of the address field, subject line, scroll boxes and icons. -
How to drill down the cause of "SQL*Net message from/to client"
Pretty frustrated with my tune up using suggestions from many papers for Oracle 10g R2 on AIX 5.3 L system. My users told me that the system (including Baan 5c) still responds slowly in some processes, some even worsen.
Using both queries such as
SELECT sid, schemaname, status FROM gv$session ORDER BY 2;
SELECT inst_id, seq#, event, p1, p2, p3, wait_time FROM v$session_wait_history WHERE sid=<sid from above>
INST_ID SEQ# EVENT P1 P2 P3 WAIT_TIME
1 1 SQL*Net message from client 1413697536 1 0 6419
1 2 SQL*Net message to client 1413697536 1 0 0
and others similar, I found very large numbers (almost 97%) of the sessions have events as “SQL*Net message to client” and “SQL*Net message from client” on their wait_time even the sids are in inactive status. After checking the meaning of those messages in Oracle Performance and Tuning document, the document states that mainly they are probably network problems. So How can I drill down to what status of network from my client (the users) to server by Oracle or AIX? In Baan, it has its own parameter sets in its db_resource file controlling the connectivity. In average, there are 4000 “opened cursor current”, but most of them inactives.
So my colleague asked me rollback all th changes I did on OS level such as minperm%=5
maxperm%=90
maxclient%=90,
lgpg_regions lgpg_size,
sys0 maxuproc=512,
aio0 maxservers='260'
and many ioo parameters to system defaults.
I even removed the mulitplex copy of the redo log.
I tried to proof them that there maybe the problem of the Baan/Oracle connectivity, ie due to message above,http://docs.oracle.com ... read them for configuration information.
http://tahiti.oracle.com ... read them for recommendations.
http://otn.oracle.com ... find the best practices docs.
http://metalink.oracle.com ... look for similar issues to yours.
People that change things, on production boxes, without first determining that metrics indicate they are a good idea, and then determining their impact on a test box, should be sold to zoos as leopard food.
PS: Slowly likely has absolutely nothing to do with anything you touched. First you tune the application. Then you tune the database. Then you tune the operating system. Get out of the way and make the DBAs do their job.
