Tracking Pad Trouble, Mysterious Symbols?

I'm having some problems with my new computer, and I can't seem to find help, hopefully you guys can help.
I have this problem where I accidently strike some keys (I'm a sloppy typer) and I get these weird symbols on my keybord (their the ones in blue, and no matter what combination of keys I press, I can't seem to reset it unless I restart my computer.
(Pictures)
Now the second problem I have is with my tracking pad. I have a little light on it (You can see at the bottom of the picture, below the keyboard in the 2nd picture) and it turns on (orange) and I get this litle sign on my screen that fades away, it has a picture of a pointer hand on the tracking pad with a red line horizontally across the image.
After that appears, my tracking pad locks and I can't use it at all, but the keyboard works (I have to restart my computer to get the tracking pad to work).
Please help me, I can't find anything on the internet.
This question was solved.

Hi,
The symbols in Blue may be being activated by pressing the fn key - the next time this happens, try pressing the fn key again to see if this toggles back to normal keyboard entry.
Regarding the touchpad, the Orange light you see coming on ( and the touchpad turning off ) is probably caused by double tapping the top left corner of the Touchpad.  Double tapping this area again should toggle the Touchpad back on.

  • Track Pad Troubles

Sometimes whenever I am going to the next page, or I just cliked a link and the next page loads and I try and move the mouse it is stuck in the two finger scroll option. No matter which way I move on the trackpad it wants to scroll. I have to go left to right really quickly over and over again, then finally it will pop out of the scrolling mode. Im wondering if there is anyway to fix this by some update, my machine is currently upto date, so Im not really sure what I need to do.
Im wondering if this is a returnable thing, and keep in mind that my machine is about 3 weeks old. Im just trying to get this straightend out because it is annoying and slows me moving through the page because I cant click another link for a few seconds and some jerky moving.

I'm not having this problem, but since you didn't mention trying it I would suggest a PMU reset.
Remove the Magsafe and battery, then hold down the power key for 5 to 10 seconds. Then plug it all back together and try again.
While you have the battery out you might want to visually check if the trackpad cable is strangely bent or damaged. It is the only copper looking flat cable you will see in the battery bay. At least I assume that is the trackpad cable, as I've not taken my MB apart at this point.

  • I have a 2010 mac book pro and track pad is not working well, is there a problem with that year?

I have a 2010 mac book pro and track pad is not working well, is there a problem with that year. I heard that the 2011's had track pad trouble.

All recent versions of Mac OS X use bash, so avoiding Mavericks won't help you with that problem (which isn't a problem for most users).
iWeb is another matter. My advise: migrate your website to Wordpress first and start thinking about upgrades later.

Oh thank you for posting on how to enter safe browsing! I had tried to disable add-ons, but couldn't make anything click to do so. So frustrating!
Anyway, after putting on the safe browsing, it worked *immediately*, so clearly the add-ons were the issue! I deleted a bunch I don't use anyway, and it's been working fine for hours.
    Thank you!!

  • Trouble shooting track pad

My track pad has lost control of the arrow. It is hard to move or it acts on its own. Is there a way to trouble shoot this?

  • Magic Track Pad disconnecting after upgrading to Maverick

My magic track pad has worked flawlessly since purchased with my iMac in 2011. After upgrading to Mavericks it now randomly disconnects and is scrolling in reverse. In order to get it working all I need do is turn on the mouse and when it connects, then the magic track pad reconnects. Why it will only reconnect after doing that, I have no idea ? The new reverse scrolling action is also a mystery. Help please !

    Hello Frank,
It can be difficult to accomplish much if your Magic Trackpad does not stay connected.  I found an article with steps you can take when you have issues with a Bluetooth device not connecting.  I recommend following the steps in the section titled "Top troubleshooting tips" in the following article:

  • MacBook Pro Keyboard and tracking pad issues

I bought a refurbed macbook pro from Apple about 10 months ago. I've loved everything about it . . . until now. Yesterday I turned it on and started having keyboard issues. First the y key wouldn't work, then the rest of the keys followed. At that point, it was still starting up normally, but then the tracking pad would only "right click" on items on my desk top, so I couldn't open applications.
Now it will only open up in safe mode and it makes a noise like I'm pressing all the keys at once at start-up. Nothing happened to it between Saturday night when it was working perfectly and Sunday morning so I'm mystified. I brought it to the genius bar this morning and they also couldn't see what was wrong. Genius said something about how some keys looked "stuck" but mentioned it didn't looked like anything was spilled on it or anything.
The only "weird" thing about it is that the hing between the screen and the keyboard has always been a little loose but I didn't know until my husband bought a new pro a few months later and I felt the difference. The genius didn't seem to think that would mean anything.
They told me it would be at least $280 to send it out, diagnose, and fix it. Considering it's less than a year old, I'm a little reluctant (and poor) to do that right way especially since he had no clue what the problem might be.
I'm planning on trying another Genius Bar to see if they might have a better idea (hey, it worked with my ipod once) but I've been combing the message boards to see if anyone has had a similar issue. I found an older thread that talked about 2008 pros haven't issues with the keyboard and trackpad freezing due to a "faulty pressure connector" so I might try that solution when I get home. But any other ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If you bought your Mac from Apple 10 months ago, it should still be covered by the 1 year warranty and as long as the problem was not caused by accidental damage of some sort, it should be repaired at no cost to you. Was the store aware that you were still under warranty?
You can even upgrade to 3 year Applecare if you do so before the first year of ownership is up--definitely something to do if your Mac is having troubles already.
When you see the next genius, make sure they know you are still in the 1 year warranty period, and if you can, upgrade to 3 year Applecare.
You can also call Applecare on the phone and tell them about these problems and ask them for a case number, which will at least establish that they started while you were still under warranty. If a problem first occurs under warranty, Apple will honor the warranty until the problem is fixed, even if the warranty runs out in the meantime.
    Good luck!

  • I have just installed OS X Mavericks and I can't seem to right click on the track pad.

I have just installed OS X Mavericks and I can't seem to right click on the track pad.
Also the track pad seems to be slower/ not picking up all my finger movements.

You might want to take the computer to an Apple Store or an AASP and have them give you an estimate, at least, on how much it would cost to 'fix' the trackpad - I've no idea what the cost would be. The trackpad on MBPs is one of the most sensitive elements in the computer's design. They usually don't go bad, but yours seems to be giving you some trouble: so just make a Genius Bar appointment and just get an estimate - might be something simple.

  • Magic Track Pad won't click

I just got a Mac Mini.... connected by Magic Track Pad... all features work except "click"..... any ideas?

I had the same problem.  I attached an old USB mouse to get through the initial setup.
Under System Preferences --> Trackpad there are three lists of gestures and a check box by each to allow or disallow.  The single click on mine was not selected.
One other gotcha.  Under the "Point and Click" tab there is the "Three Finger Drag".  Under "Other Gestures" there is "Mission Control" which should be swipe up with four fingers.  There is an option to make it swipe up with three fingers.  If you change it to three, it will disable the Three Finger Drag.
I'm having trouble getting the four finger Mission Control gesture to work but otherwise the track pad works beautifully.

  • The single tap on our track pads works sporadically

Our track pad arrow works fine. When I single click, the function does not work.  It seems to not to have a pattern. Need help trouble shooting.

Hi we had also a big issue with SSO and domains. Our Portal was in domain <portalservername>.a.b.c and our BW System in <bwservername>.a.b.c
So we thought SSO should work. But the portal had an alias name enterprise.portal.b.c (which was actually used to access the portal via the Internet Explorer)
    And that was the problem.
The Ticket will be created for portal.b.c and the Session Ticket will only be send to Servers in portal.b.c Domains. Our BW System is in a.b.c so the Session Ticket was not sent.
We solved the problem (with help of SAP) by adding a system Alias for the BW System named <bwservername>.portal.b.c
    And now SSO was working.
So not the Domain the system is in is important but the url in your browser window is important.
I dont know if this help you in any way but because i wanted it to share anyway.
    Best regards,
    Kai

  • "swollen battery" cause track pad problem?

I got my 17" MBP in June 06. All was fine until recently when I started experiencing the battery problems listed so many times here. Random shut downs, random battery readings, and finally, a bulging battery. Swollen out of the compartment. First call to Apple resulted in my being told their was "no documentation for this problem, first I am hearing of this".....I needed to "see a genius". Lo and behold, the discussions, where I found loads of documentation, as well as other websites. Called Apple back, and am being sent a new battery....HOWEVER....I inquired as to my track pad clicker not working properly, which started the same time as the battery problems..asked if this could be due to the "swollen battery" since it sits on the flip side of the track pad....again, I was told of "no complaints about that"........now again, I have found similar complaints in the discussions, but only a few. Is anyone else having this problem???? Please tell of any track pad click problems.
I don't think this has anything to do with the update to OSX 10.4.9....I think it has to do with the age of the battery.....most problems seem to be happening around the same age frame of battery.
I am new to discussion posting....please have patience if done incorrectly.

I was very glad to read this topic. I also am having trouble with my click pad on a 17" MBP bought in July 06 and am needing to replace a really swollen battery. I was planning on taking my computer to the nearest Apple store today but it is quite a distance. I hadn't thought about calling -- your post saved me a long drive:) I was wondering if I precipitated the battery problem because I tend to always have my computer plugged in. Just read that that's not the best thing for the battery.

  • HT5815 Updated to 10.8.5 and now I cannot control my macbook pro with the track pad.  Any solutions?

Like any other time, the App Store said there was a new update and asked if I wanted to update now.  I did.  Unfortunately, the update, after rebooting, has rendered the system unusable.  I can no longer control the system with the track pad.  The arrow is moving itself around the screen and the Launchpad periodically opens itself and gets locked in that mode.  I've rebooted, launched in safe mode, and zapped PRAM.  Nothing has changed.  I experienced the same thing in safe mode, no change.  Anyone else having these problems?  Not sure what to do next.

There are several possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps until it's resolved.
    1. Follow the instructions in this support article, and also this one, if applicable.
    2. Open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check for unknown or forgotten input devices. Disconnect any USB input devices that you aren't using.
    3. Boot in safe mode and test, preferably without launching any third-party applications. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, but it comes back when you reboot as usual, stop here and post your results. If you can't boot in safe mode, do the same. If you booted in safe mode and there was no change, go on to the next step.
    4. Reset the System Management Controller.
    5. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
    6. A swollen battery in a MacBook Pro or Air can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced without delay.
    7. Some people have reported that they fixed a malfunctioning trackpad by pressing down on all four corners at once. I can't confirm, but it does no harm to try.
    8. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built-in trackpad of a MacBook to  behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
    9. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
    10. If none of the above applies, or if you have another reason to think that your computer is being remotely controlled, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi (or your Wi-Fi access point), disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop at once, you should suspect an intrusion.
    11. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine and/or external trackpad tested.

  • MBP keyboard and track pad not working

Today the keyboard and track pad on our mac book pro laptop just stopped working. The mouse connected to it by usb continued to work but we can't type or anything. We tried the ^F6 keyboard shortcut but it did nothing since of course the keyboard isnt working. And it is also not the number lock key. The computer was working fine all day up until now. It is just under a year old. Any ideas?

I'm having the same problem. It appeared yesterday and then magically "repaired" itself. My MBP was fine today. Tonight the problem is back. No response from the keyboard and track pad. Track pad works fine using a USB mouse. My problem appears at start up. The cursor is in the usual upper left hand corner. It can't be moved. Restart, sleep then restart do not solve the problem.
    Suggestions?

  • Problems with track pad and osx installation disc on macbok.

Okay so I am having two separate problems with my macbook.
First, the track pad, or the button beneath it, is pretty much completely out of commission. When I try and use it, the computer acts as if I am holding down the button all the time. Example, when I drag it across the desktop, the "click-and-drag" square starts appearing next to the cursor or when move the cursor on an icon, it tries to click and drag that. The only way that I can fix it thus far is to hook up my wireless mouse. Hoping someone else has a better solution so that I can continue to use the notebook on the go without having to bring the mouse. Note: the button does not appear to be depressed in anyway.
Second problem is happening when I attempt to reboot the computer with the OS X Leopard disk in for a re-installation. When the gray start-up screen appears, before the gray apple comes on the middle of the screen, a folder icon with a question mark on it appears for a split second and then turns into the normal apple icon after which my OSX disk is spit out of the drive and the computer boots straight to the desktop. I have attempted holding down the control button, the option button, and starting the process while the computer is still turned on and then just restarting it, the disc is ejected upon restart every time. I have reinstalled the OS with this disk once before and it has worked fine and other disks seem to be working fine in the drive, so I am at a lost here.
I know that was a lot of info but if anyone out there can help me out with either one of these problems it would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

exactly the same issu with the track pad here.
I v tried to use it without the battery but the problem persist.
If I use an USB mouse i can move it arnd but wen I click or double click nothing happen...so is useless.Same problem with the Blur Tooth wireless mouse.
The issue appear several months ago...after a couple of weeks went away, and now is back again. I try the routine manteinance but nothing solved the issue.
Any suggestion? I have some urgent work to do ...I will try tomorrow to bring it in an apple store but I can't leave it with them ..
    Thanx in advance
