Tracking with GarageBand

Hello everyone! I'm going to order a MacBook next month for the following reasons: 1. I hate Windows and need to get off of it.
2. I want to use it for mobile recording.
My main recording at this point would be perhaps 5 tracks at once. Most of what I read in regard to GB seems to center on loop based and virtual instrument type stuff. I'm looking to do real live music sessions here (2 acoustic guitars, vocals, perhaps some keyboard). Is GB capable of this? Thanks.
Joe

Yes it is,
Just get yourself a recording interface, depending on how many mics you want to use for the live sessions, http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/FAQPages/Interfaces.html

  • Problems using M Audio Fast Track with Garageband

According to the blurb, the M Audio Fast Track (USB) 'is class compliant in Mac OSX offering true plug-and-play operation. Just plug in, and you're ready to start recording'. This is why I bought it, but I am experiencing no end of problems actually getting it to register with Garageband '08.
The problems are (a) I cannot hear any sound coming 'through' the Fast Track and Garageband (b) I can hear the guitar if I plug the headphones into the Fast Track, but nothing is recorded in Garageband (c) my mic, which is plugged into the line socket intended for guitars because I don't have the larger connection, reports no sound at all.
Any ideas, or tips to how others have managed to set up this 'plug-and-play' device would be greatly welcomed.

Did you ever get this to work? I just today bought a Fast Track Pro. I have it hooked to my MBP via USB. I can see in control Panel two inputs:
M-Audio Fast Track Pro UDB: Line Input
M-Audio Fast Track Pro UDB: S/PDIF
Problem is, there is no sound registering on the Input Level on either choose.
I have the Power On and have tried both Input 1 & 2, bith in stereo and mono mode.
(Just to be clear, I connect the electric guitar directly to the Fast track pro, correct?)
I have read the owners manual but it is worthless. I thought this would be easy to set up.
Also note that GarageBand preferences the Audio Output and Input are selected to Fast Track Pro.
    What am I doing wrong?

  • M-audio M-track with GarageBand 11

    Just bought an M-audio M-track.
I'm having some issues getting it to work with GarageBand.
When I create a track and choose the m-track input the microphone icon on the right col under the track settings is fixed and does not allow any adjustment. Not what I was expecting.
Any good tutorials online for this?
    Comments and suggestions appreciated.

  • Can I Merge Tracks with Garageband?

    Hello there,
Mostly I like to use Reason when it comes to recording and mixing tracks but since buying the new Aluminum Macbook, which incorporates a music software package of its own, I thought I'd try a different approach. My problem, however, is that I cannot find a way of merging two tracks. Say for example I've placed a small drum loop in track one. I select it from the audition area and place it in the track area. Then, in order to configure the drum track further, and in order that I can mess around with it more, I place the same drum loop in track two: only this time, I edit it and shorten it down so that only a few beats are pronounced. At this point I would usually merge the tracks, thus making both track two and track one into a single track. But I do not know how to do this in Garageband. Can anyone tell me whether this is at all possible?

With reason I would record one track and one overdub. Then I would merge both tracks. When I use Garageband, the option to join track one with track two does not exist. I take it you are able to have a drum loop in track one, a drum loop in track two, and are able to combine both in a single instant. I merely highlight the regions as I would highlight text in a document. Is there a more serious issue with my copy of Garageband. It did come complimentary with my Macbook, as it does with every other Macbook.

  • Using Garageband 2.0.2 Tracks with Garageband '08

Basically I'm running Garageband 2.0.2 and my friend is using the newest version Garageband '08
I would like to be able to insert my drum tracks into a project on his computer with his Garageband. I know I can just insert the audio (I can can't I?) but I was hoping to be able to use the tracks interchangebly
I'm quite new to this program but I love it more and more as I use it
    Thanks in advance

Are you using Flex Builder 3? Flex 3.0 beta Data
visualization components are available as part of FB 3 only. You
can select either 2.0.1 hotfix 3 charts (consists of only
charts.swc) or 3.0.0 data visualization (consists of
datavisualization.swc). through multiple sdks feature of FB3. For
flex 3 beta, flex 2 charting key will work. so if you want to try
out new features in charts and new components like Advanced data
grid you can switch to 3.0.0 sdk and use same flex 2 charting key
    to remove watermark from charts.

  • Help with exporting tracks from Garageband into iTunes please?!

I have voice-recorded a list of Italian words and phrases which I want to import into iTunes as separate tracks so that I can shuffle them & test myself to learn them. So far I have been using the cycle region to import each word but it is taking forever! I beieve it is not possible to have multpile cycle regions and have been playing about with the markers using the podcast track but I can't get it to export in chapters either.
Is there a way to split a single track in Garageband and import it as mulitple tracks into iTunes all at the same time?
Thanks for any help you can give me!

    vanessa2011 wrote:
the chapters only work when you actually burn to CD. I assume that's correct?
for your purposes, yes (technically it would create podcast style chapters so you could jump past a section, for instance, but not in a shuffle fashion like you want)
    vanessa2011 wrote:
I'm guessing that will take an awful lot of CDs?!
you could use a re-writtable, but no, this doesn't sound like a really workable solution for what you're doing.
    vanessa2011 wrote:
Just two of the chapters has already become 220 'songs' in iTunes and over 20MB.
one thing you should be doing is selecting the "compress" option in the export dialogue. you can probably use very aggressive compression for spoken word since hi-fidelity wouldn't be that important (you might experiment with a custom setting to see how low you can go with it still being acceptable)
    vanessa2011 wrote:
I wonder how much would fit onto a CD
in terms of audio, it's time, not disc space. a standard CD holds 74 minutes of audio (some store 80)
you could try an audio editor instead of GB:

but GB is probably the most simple option

  • Can GarageBand create a track with beeps at specified intervals?

    Hi everyone,
Can I use GarageBand09 to do the following:
Create an mp3 with beeps (or ticks, or strums or whatever) at specified time intervals:
for the first minute every 6 seconds, the second minute every 5.7 seconds, the third every 5.4 seconds, etc?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I am not a regular user of GarageBand.
    Thanks in advance!

Sure. Create a real instrument track with an instrument that does the beep you want, set the ruler to display real time (instead of musical time) and put the notes wherever you want them. Once you have two or three notes with the regular spacing, you can copy and paste them as a group, and so on, so you won't have to place every single note where it belongs.

  • Garageband 10.0.1 New track with duplicate settings is not allowing effects in

When I use the "New track with duplicate setting"
It will not allow effects on that new track that was created.
If I just create a new track with the + button it is fine.
The problem is I have already recorded all the tracks and the artists have all gone home.
Anyone know of a work around till this gets fixed?

    jonboy5 wrote:
This is the correct way to do that right?
yes, you're trying to do exactly what you should be doing, so now it's time to get to your original problem.
perhaps you can explain in detail what you do, and exactly what happens/what you see/what doesn't work.
i finally had a chance to get on a 10.9 machine and tried duplicating a track in GBv10, it worked exactly as expected here; recreating the effect settings i had, and allowing me to change them as desired

  • Using USB Microphone With GarageBand iPad?

Hi, I have the Samson G-Track USB Microphone and have been using it with GarageBand for iPad (with a powered USB hub) and I was wondering if there is a way to enable "Monitor" so that when I speak into the microphone I can hear myself in the headphones? I have no problem recording with the microphone, I just can't hear myself when I'm recording. There are a few switches on the actual microphone that could control this or it could all be controlled from iPad itself, just looking for anyone who could help with this matter. Thanks!

I'm having the same problem trying to monitor my turntable recording via a USB phono amp connected via a USB hub to the photo connection kit.
Have you had any help with this yet?

  • How do I create ringtones from iTunes songs with Garageband?

I have an iPhone 5s.  Is it possible to convert itunes songs into ringtones with Garageband ios?

Yes, you can, if you sync your iTunes songs to the Music.app.
    See this Help-Page:
    http://help.apple.com/garageband/iphone/2.0/index.html#chs39284d66
Share a GarageBand song as a ringtone or text tone
In the My Songs browser, tap the Select button, then tap the song you want to export (or touch and hold the song).
Tap the Action button , then tap Share Song As Ringtone. The Export Ringtone panel opens, showing the name for the ringtone. By default, the ringtone uses the same name as the song. The maximum length for exported ringtones is 30 seconds. If the exported ringtone exceeds the maximum length, a dialog appears. Tap Continue to have GarageBand shorten the ringtone automatically, or tap Cancel to return to the song so you can shorten it.
To rename the ringtone, tap the name and type a new name.
    Tap Export.
In the Ringtone Export Successful panel, do one of the following:
To return to the My Songs browser, tap OK.
To choose a use for the ringtone, tap Use sound as, then do one of the following:
To use the ringtone as your standard ringtone, replacing the existing ringtone, tap Standard Ringtone.
To use the ringtone as your standard text tone, replacing the existing text tone, tap Standard Text Tone.
To see a list of your contacts, tap Assign to Contact, then tap the contact you want to use the ringtone with.
To return to the My Songs browser without assigning the ringtone, tap Done to return.
The next time you sync your device, the ringtone also appears in the GarageBand File Sharing area in iTunes. You can drag it to the Tones list to add it to your iTunes ringtone library.
And see this page, how to add a song from the Music.app to a track in GarageBand:

  • Using TASCAM US-122 with GarageBand...doesn't seem to work

And not only with GarageBand...the software that the US-122 came with isn't even picking up the signals omitted from the TASCAM itself. I hooked up a keyboard to my TASCAM using a cable (I'm not sure what it's called...but it's the same thing you would use to connect a guitar with an amp), plugging each end into the INPUT (TASCAM) and OUTPUT (keyboard) jacks. The interface is showing me signs that the connection to and from the keyboard works via flashes on a green LED...but when I try to clarify the connection on my computer, the software (tuner, buffer, etc.) won't show any signs of connection. The USB cable is connected, I set my sound up exactly the way the instruction manual for the TASCAM said to, but it's just not picking up. It could be the interface itself, however...I can't hear anything when I plug a pair of headphones into the US-122. Do I have to use a MIDI cable, or is my interface not operating properly? Help me, please!
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

You didn't mention the kind of track in GB you are trying to create, but if you are connecting the keyboard with a guitar chord to the Tascam, you will need to set up a Real Instrument Track in GB to hear anything. If your keyboard has a midi out, use a midi cable to the midi input of the Tascam, create Software Instrument Track, and you will hear something. But with a guitar chord, it won't send the right signal to a Software Instrument Track. The headphone jack in the Tascam monitors the signal coming back to it out of GB (if you choose the US-122 as your monitor in GB's preferences), so you wouldn't hear your keyboard if the track is not set up correctly. It could be the drivers, but since you didn't mention the type of keyboard or the type of GB track, I thought that might be a possible answer as well.

I am using iMac OS 10.7.2 with Garageband'11 6.0.4. I can't record sound from  mixer Behringer X1622USB using USB out. when I connect the mixer to iMac via USB  appears USB Audio CODEC on Sound and Preferences but I can't get no sound from mixer to iMac only sound from iMac to mixer. I only can record sound using microphone line in. Please help.

    Eric,
Thanks for your reply. Realtek audio works only in playback. There is a stereo mix in the mixer but the recording controls are not operable with no sliders in the mixer for any recording option. Slider controls appear to be grayed out. Can't figure out how to enable them. Downloaded newest drivers to no avail.
The M Audio control panel has no apparent option for recording stereo mix. Adobe ignores the sound from the DVD or CD and shows flatline.
I'm trying to record the sound from the DVD not rip the track.
When I go to Audio Driver Setup and select Audition 3.0 windows sound, there is no input device installed.
I'm thinking of going back to a decent internal Soundblaster card like I have on my 8 year old machine I am replacing.

  • Run full screen video with GarageBand

    Good evening.
I have a question about using GaraBand with full screen video.
I'm creating a movie using Final Cut Pro (which's new for me) and creating a music track in Garageband.
I will like to have GarageBand to play the music in one track, using an interface I will send a click to the drumer but also ( and this is part of my question), I need to have GaraBand to play the sync movie I created, on a video beam running in full screen.
The goal is to manage the application in my laptop but the people should not see the application or anything on my desktop, they should be able to see just the video after I hit play.
So, is there a way to have GarageBand to send a clik to the drummer mintor, play the sound track and do split monitor on a video beam that should show just the full screen movie and not my desktop?
I will really appreciate any suggestion about this.
Note: I have Logic Pro 8 too, in case logic supports it.

Thank you for taking a look into this question Chris.
This is the very first time I'm trying to do this type of presentations and I'm not sure if there is a way or another application to run a music track with a click only for monitoring of the drummer (which GB does) and at the same time run the video which was edited to by synchronized with the audio the musicians will play.
I can see the the movie preview window and make it larger, the problem is that it will not pay in full screen  move on a video beam.
I'm starting to feel that with GB it is not possible.

  • Will this work with garageband?

    Hi,
will this device work with garageband?
    http://www.behringer.com/PODCASTUDIO-FIREWIRE/index.cfm?lang=ENG
It has 4 inputs, so will there be four tracks in garageband or how does that work?
    Regards
    Johannes
Message was edited by: Johannes Damsgaard-Madsen

    Hi Johannes
It will work, as it is MAC OS compatible.
The 4 inputs will show up in Garageband, according you open the same number of tracks and assign each of them to one input. You will most likely find the information on how to connect your audio interface to your computer (USB or FireWire), and then you read Garageband user Manual
Just my 2 cents, I wouldn't suggest Behringer. Their high-end product may be defendable, but the lower end like this podcast station aren't always good for the sound recording. Depending of your use of the product and how professional your work has to be, you might want to consider other setups. I say that because I used to own a Behringer Mixer and it sounded like crap, not to mention all the noise. But again, the best is to go to a music store and try different ones... You're the one who will use it.
    Have fun!
