Tracking your lost iPad

I recently lost my new iPad air after 2 months, (Ouch). I tried the Find my iPhone APP but did not help. The problem is that I have a lock on the screen for security purpose and it is only a WiFi system so the Find my iPhone app does not work unless it hits the internet. I registered the iPad and tried everything I could think of to find where I lost it. Two weeks later, I was talking to our nieborhood watch rep and he suggested posting an alert on the local web page for the nieborhood. Long story short, I received a caall from a person saying he had found the iPad in the street and it looked like someone had run over it. He sent me pictures of it and said he had taken it to a repair shop for repairs and to wipe the system clean and reload it.
My question is, if we are registering the iPads, why is there not a site that anyone can go to to verify a serial # of a registered item to see who owns it? It was even taken to an apple store for repairs and no one checked to see if it was registered to someone else. If this service was available, the person that found the iPad could have located me via my apple logon to let me know that he had found the iPad and what I wanted to do. At this point I don;t feel right in takng the iPad away from him since it has been wiped clean and he paid for the repairs.

The system that Apple has created does not work off serial numbers or IMEI numbers but off the setup using iCloud. That does require the unit be on and attached to the Internet. But to the other part of your post, do not send an erase signal or release the unit from your iCloud devices...that makes it free for the other person to walk away with it. Your only protection is to keep it locked to your account.
Get the device back and then remove or clean it...not before it is back in your possession.

Sorry to hear it but unfortunately it can't be tracked this way, you can only have At&t block service to it and submit the serials to law enforcement in case it was stolen and somebody tries to take it to a pawn shop. See Apple's support article:

Can you really track a lost or stolen Ipad from my PC?

If you had an iCloud account on it, and the find my iPad setting enabled, you might be able to.
Open a web browser and login to your iCloud account (www.iCloud.com) and see if it shows up in the location app there.
The iPad will need to be on a data network for it to be trackable - wifi or cellular does not matter, but tracking is done with an internet data connection between the device and Apple servers - no data connection and it will show as off line.
In iOS 7, find my iPad would also have enabled Activation Lock. So even if someone wipes the device, they cannot activate and use it without your AppleID and password.

If you set up the Find My iPad service in the Settings prior to the iPad going missing, then there is a chance that can be tracked, wiped of its data or locked (which does the same thing as activating the screen lock), though it depends on a number of factors: the iPad is turned on, is connected to a WiFi or 3G network, and has not had the Find My iPad service turned off or the iPad completely restored. Log into icloud.com and go to the Find My iPhone section.
If you did not set up Find My iPad, then there is no way to track it. Report the loss the police and change any passwords for any online accounts you may have used from your iPad (the iTunes Store, for instance).

If the lost device is turned off or has no wifi connection, then you won't be able to track it. If stolen, it could have been wiped by the thief or had the find my iPhone service turned off by him/her.

I am sorry to hear that you lost your iPad Air 2. You will only see the last location if it has been off for less than 24 hours. Anything longer than that, it will not show up using the Find My feature. Take a look at the article below for more information.

If you had "Find My iPad" enabled in Settings > iCloud then you may be able to locate it. If not, you cannot locate it.
If it was enabled then you can try locating it via http://icloud.com on a computer or the App "Find My iPhone" on another iDevice. Note: this will only work if your device is connected to a network and the device hasn't already been restored as new and/or "Find My iPad" has not been disabled on it. Note: Disabling "Find My iPad" is much more difficult in iOS 7.
If you think that your device was stolen rather than lost then you should report it to the police. In either case you should contact your carrier, change your iTunes account password, your email account passwords, and any passwords that you'd stored on websites/emails/notes etc.

That app simply allow you to find other devices using your ipod. It has nothing to do with fining the device on which it is installed.
If you set up the find my ipod feature that is built into your ipod and the ipod is on and it is connected to wi-fi and it has not been restored, then you may be able to get an approximate street address using icloud.
Othrewise, it cannot be tracked.

Hello all,
I work in an institution where we deploy 80 iPads a day to delegates for the duration of their stay with us.
At the moment, we are unable to find a suitable location tracking solution, for when the iPads go wandering. As you can guess, we have had a couple over the years go missing, but have been fortunate it has only been a couple.
For our staff devices(not limited to iPads) we use Systems Manager/Meraki. But there are serveral reasons why we cannot use this for our delegate. I will detail some of them below:
We deploy the iPads day to day, using Configurator to wipe and load them, ready for the next person, this clears the enrollment settings, meaning we would spend hours each morning getting the devices enrolled as we would have to repeat this for each person
The location tracking is inadequate, as it tracks by IP, not giving us a realistic picture of where the iPads are when trying to find them
The beta location tracking feature is only a beta and we would need something reliable long term and short term
As all of the devices are 'supervised' we would preferably like a solution which could be used with Configurator.
Finally, we would like to be able to push out apps wirelessly to the devices on our network, this would be useful for last minute requests. We currently don't have anything in place for this and wondered if others are having the same issue, or have a good solution.
