Trackpad and Keyboard Freezes on my Macbook

I have a spring 2008 model macbook whose keyboard and trackpad will freeze when my macbook gets too hot. Usually before it freezes up the macbook will try, over the course of several minutes, to eject a CD even though there is no CD in the drive. Shortly after that the keyboard and trackpad freeze up.
I've taken it to the Mac Store and they ran the computer through a "stress test" but could not get it to have the same trackpad freeze as I did so they did not fix it. I have taken the battery out and that seems to help a bit but it did freeze up as I was writing this post and had to reboot.
Anybody know how to fix this on a Macbook (not macbook pro)? Thanks

My keyboard and trackpad freezes too. It seems to occur when screen dims. After I force the restart by holding down the power button, everything works again. But later, it will freeze again.
I have built-in keyboard and trackpad firmware version 1.0.1. No additional updates cued when this application is selected from the applications\utilities holder.
I am currently running Mac OS 10.5.6 on a White MacBook 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 2Gb 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
Plugging in an external mouse works during the freeze.
Please help. Thanks

  • Macbook Pro trackpad and keyboard freezes after attempting sleep mode

I bought this computer on April 2008. It has the latest OS X 10.5.6 and it did not accept the trackpad firmware. I tried to install and the software said "this computer does not need this update".
This has been happening a lot when I am using Skype while talking to someone with video and sound. The computer tries to go on sleep mode because I am not typing or touching it - it thinks I am away because I am just talking and watching the person on the other side.
I touch the computer to avoid getting on sleep mode and with that it freezes the trackpad and keyboard. I continue to listen and see the other person and they continue to see me and hear me, but I cannot move the "mouse" cursor on the screen or type anything. Neither can I force to quit anything. The only thing that works is to close the computer and open again, that forces the computer to go into sleep mode then I can make it wake up again by opening it and touching any key on the keyboard.
This have been interrupting Skype calls and a study I am conduting. I have to keep touching the computer trackpad to not let it sleep ever. I am concerned is something with the battery or maybe it needs some kind of firmware.
This is very recent, just started happening this week (March 2009). I have not added any new software or any hardware to the machine.
What can I do to make the trackpad and keyboard stop freezing when the computer tries to sleep?

this is in the wrong category. I added a new message to the right category: MacBook Pro but I don't know how to delete it from here.

I have to keep touching the computer to avoid getting on sleep mode. If it attempts to sleep, it freezes and stops the trackpad and keyboard. I continue to listen and see the other person on Skype with no problems, and they continue to see me and hear me, but I cannot move the "mouse"/trackpad cursor on the screen or type anything. Neither can I force to quit anything. The only thing that works is to close the computer and open again, that forces the computer to go into sleep mode then I can make it wake up again by opening it and touching any key on the keyboard. But that interrupts the Skype call and the video and the internet connection. It is a very frustrating interruption.
This have been interrupting Skype calls and my website usability study I am conducting. I have to keep touching the computer trackpad to not let it go on sleep mode ever, but I forget sometimes when I focused on the study.
I am concerned is something with the battery or maybe it needs some kind of firmware. I am also concerned that if I never let it sleep it will shorten the battery's life span.
This is very recent, just started happening this week (beginning of March 2009). I have not added any new software or any hardware to the machine.

"...No, I haven't. I am assuming it will take too long, they might not have the answer, and I don't have the time for a long phone call now.
The Apple store in Arlington is always too busy and you I waited over an hour to be helped a few times before."
    1. The phone call will at the very least get you a case number and they can advise you if this is a current issue.
    2. Making an appointment with the genius will at the very least cut down your wait time.

  • Trackpad and Keyboard intermittent Freezing

My trackpad and keyboard are freezing at random intervals for random spans of time (usually for a few seconds). I havent downloaded any recent software that has cause this to my knowledge. Any help would be wonderful because even typing this is frustrating.

I just took delivery of a new MacBook a couple of days ago. When I started it up I let it restore all of my user files, applications, and everything from a Time Machine backup. That worked fine, but now Time Machine wants to perform the initial, lengthy backup on a new machine. I find that when that is running, the trackpad and keyboard both freeze and I can't do anything. Strangely, if I plug a Logitech travel mouse into one of the USB ports, that is able to drive the mouse cursor. The keyboard is still frozen until I turn the backup off though.
I'm going to plug the MacBook directly into the Time Capsule to get the backup to go faster, but I still wonder: is there a way to reduce the priority of the Time Machine process so I can use the MacBook while the backup is running?

  • Macbook Air Trackpad And Keyboard Unresponsive!! PLEASE HELP!

Hello everyone, a while ago (about 2 months) my Macbook air started having troubles with its trackpack and keyboard. At random times they would become unresponsive and just stop working. They would work for like 1 second when the computer turns on but then it would stop. A couple weeks ago the problem stopped occuring the keyboard and trackpad were working fine and dandy. Of course until last night, I open the computer and the trackpad and keyboard won't work.. The keyboard lights are on and the power button works but nothing else does it is extremely frustrating! I did an SMC reset which worked for like 5 minutes until it stopped working again. I have done a NVRAM reset nothing, I have done everything that I have seen but I need a fix for this! The mac is running OS X 10.9.3 and I am pretty sure that is the latest. Please help me guys I am really getting frustrated with this undying problem ;/

you don't need to disassemble your device.

  • Having to wait for Trackpad and Keyboard to work when waking from sleep, any solutions?

I have a 2012 MBP 13" base model (OSX 10.8.2) and when I first brought it was really fast at waking from sleep (lid being closed) and the trackpad and keyboard would work instantly. Now I'm having to wait 20+ seconds before I can do anything with the trackpad or keyboard. It usually happens after the mac has been asleep more than an hour, any solutions to this problem?

I'm having exactly this issue. I have a 15" MacBook Pro SR as well. It's happened four or five times since I installed Leopard yesterday. The trackpad works but the keyboard is completely dead. Also, choosing "Restart..." from the Apple menu doesn't work, as other apps fail to quit and (if I quit them with the trackpad) I get an error that the finder has failed to quit. As with JGB5, this happens after the MBP wakes from sleep -- sometimes resleeping/reawakening it fixes it, but sometimes the keyboard dies a couple of minutes afterwards anyway, and a restart is required.

  • Frozen trackpad and keyboard

I have a MBP 2.0 10.5.3 which over the past couple of months has been intermittently freezing. This usually happens with internet use (wireless and on battery). The trackpad and keyboard completely freeze and don't wake up. It has to be restarted to work again. There is no rhyme or reason for the activity. Everything is up to date with the software updates.

Does rebooting always work? In my case it didn't. Same problem though, keyboard and trackpad "losing contact" with the OS, but externals working fine. The only solution I've found thus far that actually works 99% percent is to apply slight pressure to the area above the trackpad. This fixes my problem for a while. Sometimes just while it is pressed, and sometimes a while after. I'm getting it checked out, but I assume some cable is getting cut because of heat generation. In my case it never happens to a "cold" computer, not yet anyway.
Edit: I found this post explaining the problem in detail:http://discussions.apple.com/edit!default.jspa?messageID=7365435
If rebooting always works that's probably not it, but if it does, this is a likely culprit.

  • Is there any way to connect my Apple wireless/bluetooth trackpad and keyboard to my Mac Mini without using a wired or usb keyboard?

Is there any way to connect my Apple wireless/bluetooth trackpad and keyboard to my Mac Mini without using a wired or usb keyboard?

Well, I read that already, but I am trying to start up my Mac mini(new purchase) and I cannot get to all the system preferences etc since I cannot get past the startup screens. The site also mentioned waiting to turn on the keyboard until a language was requested. Neither language screen worked. I feel as though I'm just about ready to throw in the towel.

  • Security update 2013 has corrupted wireless trackpad and keyboard

Security update 2013 has corrupted my wireless trackpad and keyboard.  The wireless trackpad will select and highlight text on its own, will secondary click on its own, will highlight and drag text on its own, etc. It is basically possessed!
Security update 2013 has also seriously corrupted my wireless keyboard.  The wireless keyboard will randomly jump back in the sentence or to earlier paragraph or worse just select and delete all that I have written as I am typing! It is very frustrating and is rendering my workstation useless!
Please help me. Is there someway to update/reset bluetooth? Why is this happening after I updated?

Similar keyboard conniptions on my MBP after the recent Snow Leopard update. Obviously, it being a MBP, this wasn't a wireless issue, but directly after installing the update, the keyboard refused to type a word. I could place the cursor with the mouse but the keyboard was totally non-reactive.
Re-booted it. Didn' t work. Ran Disk Utitlity, verified the disk, verified and repaired disk permissions and then did another restart. After 10-15 secs of further inactivity, the keyboard started working again.
There seems to be a problem relating to keyboards on the most recent Snow Leopard update. Disk Utility and a couple of restarts seems to have ironed out the wrinkle.

  • IMac won't search for trackpad and keyboard after restart

I've recently experienced problems using the trackpad and keyboard to wake up my iMac. Twice in the last 2 months we have been unable to wake the mac, so we would use the power button to restart it, and when it came back on again the keyboard and trackpad would be fine.
However, the same thing happened yesterday and when we restarted the mac it refused to search for the bluetooth trackpad and keyboard. normally if we have an issue we'd get the "connection lost" then "connected' message, but none of that is happening. Both devices are on, and the batteries are fine. I've tried using a usb mouse but there's no response with that either. We're stuck on the log in screen

The classic turn off and on (disconnect power cable etc)? Just gave that a try, didn't work I'm afraid. Thanks for your reply though Barry.

  • Macbook Air 2012: intermittent, random freezes of trackpad and keyboard lasting a few seconds each

There have been a few other people to have reported this problem, but there has been no consistent solution for me on my Macbook Air 13" 2012, running 10.8.4.
What happens is this: while typing, the built-in keyboard and trackpad will suddenly lock up at the same time, randomly, intermittently, and for just a few seconds before returning to normal. This has been true through all the updates of 10.8.x since I bought the system last year.
During the freeze, one of the three behaviors occurs:
    1) both keyboard and trackpad are completely unresponsive
    2) both keyboard and trackpad get really slow, with high latency. Keys pressed show up much later or have to be pressed several times before registering. Trackpad is jumpy if it moves at all.
    3) key gets stuck, sometimes the BACKSPACE key, which usually results in several dozen emails getting deleted or entire paragraphs, or rows and rows of the same stuck key. Pressing other keys does nothing.
I've spoken online with various other people who have the same problem and confirmed that the built-in keyboard and trackpad seem to be joined together whenever this problem strikes. You never see one freeze without the other also freezing.
Also, these commonly-recommended solutions don't work:
    a) Reset PRAM. Done this many times. Does nothing.
    b) Bring it in to Apple. Did this too. They replaced the keyboard and trackpad but the problem remains.
    c) Clearing caches in safe mode. No improvement.
    d) Removing "com.google.keystone.deamon.plist" and "com.google.keystone.agent.plist" doesn't seem to work either, even though the errors and behavior are exactly the same for me as for george.e.gonzalez in this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19702976#19702976
These files do come back, though, thanks to Google Software Update. The keystone software appears to be part of Google Chrome, although I cannot confirm this.
    e) I DO have Google Android File Transfer installed like one other person reported; they said uninstalling it fixed the problem. Unfortunately, that has not worked for me. Also, Android File Transfer is installed (same version 1.0.50.2266, same Mac OS 10.8.4) on an older 2008 Macbook, and it works fine, which points to something on just this Macbook Air as being the cause.
    f) I don't use the Radio Silence firewall app--can't remove it.
    g) I don't have the telldus device or whatever it is, so I don't have the "com.telldus.service.plist" to remove.
    h) Completely clearing out /Library/LaunchAgents, /Library/LaunchDaemons, and /Library/StartupItems doesn't do anything.
    i) Repairing permissions or repairing the volume does nothing.
    j) Reinstalling the OS fresh does nothing.
    k) I don't have an external trackpad, mouse, or keyboard for testing while the freezing happens, but the machine itself seems to be working, just not the built-in input devices, which are on the same USB bus.
    l) Pressing ESC does not stop the key stuck situation, as it does for some people.
It feels to me like a hardware problem, not an OS problem, and it feels like a USB bus issue. I have noticed that when I insert USB flash drives, I get the same lock-up for a few seconds, something which my other Macs don't do.
I've also noticed various USB errors in the Console around the same time (same as george.e.gonzalez):
    7/26/13 1:20:04.000 AM kernel[0]: AppleUSBMultitouchDriver::_deviceGetReport - DeviceRequest for reportID 0x0 returned with result 0xe000404f - retrying
    7/26/13 1:20:05.000 AM kernel[0]: USBF:          844075.636          AppleUSBEHCI[0xffffff80157f1000]::Found a transaction which hasn't moved in 5 seconds on bus 0x1a, timing out! (Addr: 2, EP: 0)
But I'm not able to precisely correlate these errors to the pause.
Is anybody else having this problem that can shed more light on it than these other suggested repairs? This has been frustrating for quite a while, but I've had the stuck BACKSPACE key delete hundreds of emails on a webmail platform that I was unable to recover using Undo and out of the trash, and that's just no longer tolerable...
Thank you, thank you, thank you, if anyone can help me fix this!

    Hi, Dan--
Nope, none of those four... I do have Dropbox but never installed it on this machine. The other three are services I've never signed up for.
I am basically using these apps up-front:
Mail.app, Safari, Notes, Terminal, maybe LibreOffice 4.0.x, maybe Sublime Text 2, Console.
And the freezes happen about twice a day, usually when I'm in Mail or Terminal, but that's because those are the ones where I'm typing the most and can see immediately when the freezes happen. It could be happening even more frequently while I'm browsing, but I might not know it because I'm merely reading what's on the screen.
This is a list from Activity Monitor of what I'm using right now, which is very typical of what I use all day:
