Trackpad and Mouse Issue

Periodically my trackpad will not work. It starts off as being a bit sluggish (i.e. not responsive to swipes) and it gets progressively worse until it ceases to function. I then plug in a mouse which seems to work for a bit. However, the same problem that occurred w. the trackpad starts to happen w. the mouse. In addition sometimes my cursor seems to have a mind of its own and starts to make its way across the screen in small little back & forth motions until it reaches the right hand side and then makes its way back across (repeat).
I have contacted Apple Support a few times w. this issue and their standard response is to restart and reset the OS and RAM. The problem continues to persist and I am at the point where what I am left with a machine that is pretty much unusable.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you tried reinstalling the OS? That would be my first port of call... unless you're sure it's a hardware issue.

  • TS2662 trackpad and mouse will not scroll

On 27" iMac using OS 10.7.4, trackpad and mouse will not scroll or swipe, can point with both, click only with mouse, scroll only with keys on keyboard.  What have I done now??? They are all paired with good batteries. Have checked in settings and they are enabled to scroll.

In Lion the scrolling is natural i.e. reversed to the way that computers typically scroll. Think of the scroll as grabbing the page an moving it either up or down vs moving the scroll bar down up or down. Also, the scroll bars are "hidden" by default and only show up when you are scrolling.
Are you using and Apple mouse? If you go to the system preferences and then to the "mouse" section there are options to change the natural scrolling. And if you go to System Preferences and then to "general" you can set it to show or hide the scroll bars.
If this is not what the issue is let me know and let me know what mouse you are using because there is something else that it could be.

  • Inoperable trackpad and mouse

Recently, the trackpad and mouse will suddenly go dormant. Neither will work and I will be required to reboot to make them operable again. Bought the computer new in February and have never seen this issue before. It seems odd that both the trackpad and mouse would both be defective, but I am completely confused. Same think happens if I am only using the trackpad and no mouse.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

You can try resetting your MacBook's PRAM:

If this doesn't help, you may need to take a trip to an Apple store. Your machine is well within its warranty so you might as well have them take a look at it.

  • Radius L10W-B keyboard and mouse issues

Hello, I have just purchased a Toshiba Satelite Radius L10W-B notebook less then a day ago, and am exeriancing SERIOUS keyboard and mouse issues, Juts after purchasinng this notebook, after converting it to tablet mode and back to notebok mode, the keyboard and mouse was NON existant for over 4 hours, DID NOT WORK AT ALL. I took it back to the reseller and ofcourse as soon as I tried to show the issue, all worked fine. Now, I have massive latency issues with both keyboard and mouse. The keyboard misses key strokes in almost every 8 keys. I get 1 missed keystroke in every 8 keys pressed when typing, and these are not typos, just absolutely nothing, thyre absolute misses all togeather. This make for alot of retyping and backspacing etc etc. also, the mouse is disabled for about 3 seconds after tying, then snaps back into action. This means when typing and switching to the mouse reasonably fast, the mouse is non responsive for about 1 second which is fairly irretating. This email took over 20 minutes to write, for this exact reason. Im sure this is not normal. I really love this notebook in every other aspect, however these issues just make it plain ususuable. Any ideas? Thanks!

    Peter,
thanks for the reply. However im convinced this is hardware related! While I really hope not, Ive tried all solutions posted by others.
It simply seems the keyboard is poor quality and the rest of the laptop is awesome!
I really hope im wrong! But its my gut feeling
Ill try give them a call but not holding my breath.

  • Decouple trackpad and mouse scrolling?

I am using a Magic Trackpad and Logitech LX7 on a MacPro 1,1 running Lion.
I have tried (using System Preferences for mouse and trackpad) to revert the scroll wheel action to scroll in the "old" direction but when I try that the trackpad scrolling direction also changes.
Is there a way to decouple the scrolling direction of the trackpad and mouse wheel?

I am with you both too. I like natural scrolling on my trackpad, but not on a scroll ball for a mouse. The only solution I can find is what someone else brought up in a different thread: there is an app called "Scroll Reverser" that lets you choose which input devices (mouse, trackpad, or tablet) are reversed. Be warned, it is quite confusing to get set up. At least it was for me. But It is working fine now and is just what I wanted.
    The link is http://pilotmoon.com/scrollreverser/
p.s. if this solves your problem, don't forget to mark your problem as "Solved" so others can find the answer too.

  • Single-click registers as double-click, trackpad AND mouse

I did a search here and elsewhere on this and it seems to be a fairly common issue among G4 PowerBook users. These are the threads I found here on the subject just doing a quick search...

I have the same problem and it's really starting to annoy me since I started using this computer more frequently recently. I've owned it since new. It has done this off and on since I bought it. I only used it for travel so I just put up with it but now I'm using it for all E-mail to free up my primary desktop for other needs and this is starting to drive me crazy. The machine originally had Panther on it and when I migrated to Tiger I thought that might fix it. No such luck.
The problem is that quite often when I single-click on something, whether in the Finder or an Application, it registers as a double-click. It doesn't matter if I use the trackpad or a mouse, same problem.
I've tried different "Keyboard and Mouse" settings in System Prefs and nothing makes any difference. I've tried the PMU reset too. No change. I've tried it with the mouse disconnected and I've tried it with two different mice. No improvement. I've even tried it with green eggs and ham but the problem persists!
I've never had this issue with ANY other Mac I currently own (3 others) or have owned in the past (many since 1985). My only speculation is that MAYBE the humidity/static in my environment has something to do with it. I've never noticed an exact correlation but it SEEMS that perhaps I may be having this problem more often when the climate is dry. Possible?
Has anyone found a definitive cause/solution for this issue? Thanks!
    Mike

Glad that worked for you Sup3rL4m3r but I suspect we have different issues. I have no problems with anything except single-clicks and click-drags registering as double clicks with either the trackpad or mouse. I have no issues with my "wallpaper" or with erratic cursor issues, or with anything else. When I upgraded to Tiger as indicated in the original post, I did an archive and install but it did nothing to mitigate the problem.
This seems to possibly be a somewhat common problem based on previous posts I've read on it but I suspect that the lack of any solutions suggests it is a design flaw of some sort that has no solution. Perhaps it is not prolific enough to get any attention. Darned shame since this machine has otherwise been flawless. Kind of like buying a new car that has a hesitation on acceleration that you can't get rid of. Most annoying.

  • MBP Retina- trackpad and mouse click unresponsive

Just got a brand new MBP retina, 15" 2.6Ghz Quad, 16GB Ram, 500 SSD.
Been working with it for two days absolutely no issues, working fantastically with both trackpad and a wireless magic mouse.
Used it this morning for several house, took it to work, turned it on and the mouse is working ie the cursor moved over the screen but i am totally unable to click anything! Forced it to restart (holding down power key as that was all that worked), hasn't cured the problem.
The trackpad physically clicks so doesnt appear to be stuck, i tried plugging in a wired USB mouse, again can control the cursor but unable to click.
Running 10.8.2, no new software was installed this morning when it worked fine, so cannot figure out what is wrong with it?
    Any suggestions?????

Finally got it fixed. Make sure you guys call Apple Support. The first tier tech support is not able to help you because they have not been trained for that You will have to speak to a senior advisor. There will be a lot of deleting of caches involved while in safe mode. After did all that my trackpad and keyboard is working again. Hope you'll get yours working too!

  • Magic trackpad and mouse

Can I connect and use both a magic trackpad and usb mouse at the same time?

Duncan, I think you'll find that you use the the Trackpad so much that the mouse will just sit around unused.  That's what happened to mine.  It's always good backup though.

  • Ultraslim Plus keyboard and mouse issues with windows 8.1 (hesitation/jerkiness)

I'm just wondering if anyone else is experiencing issues with their Ultrslim Plus keyboard and mouse after the update to windows 8.1? Mine seems very hesitant missing lots of key presses and the mouse pointers movement accross the screen  is jerky. I've uninstalled and reinstalled drivers but it still isn't working like it was yesterday. Batteries for both show as 100% and nothing else has changed.

  • Keyboard and mouse issues following Snow Leopard update

I have a relatively ancient iMac--first aluminum bodied Intel-based model c. 2007. I was having issues updating my browsers (firefox, chrome) because I was on the old OS X (10.5.8 I think). So I did the Snow Leopard upgrade and since then have been having persistent keyboard (aluminum wireless) and mouse (mighty mouse connected via USB) issues.
I have verified the keyboard is connected via Bluetooth. I have verified that the keyboard is responding by opening the keyboard viewer and watching each of the keys light up as I type. Also, the keyboard will wake the computer from sleep and sometimes allow me to toggle between programs with Command+Tab.
Nevertheless, the keyboard will NOT type inside programs such as Word and Chrome. (It WILL type in the Post-it Note dashboard app, but I can't copy and paste into a browser from there.)
The Mouse will work in Chrome but in Finder and iTunes, e.g., it will not work. I can't use the mouse to select a folder in the folder tree to the left or to select a song or file/folder in the main window. I CAN, however, use the mouse to minimize/maximize/close each window.
Rebooting corrects the problem temporarily, but if I get up and walk away for a bit the keyboard and mouse re-freeze upon returning.
I have reset the PRAM and SMC because I saw these fixes listed in other discussion threads. Neither has fixed my issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Steve

    Hi Steve,
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Bluetooth keyboard and mouse issue

I have a 20" Aluminium iMac with the bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Recently i've started to have some issues where the keyboard keeps disconnecting & reconnecting, also the mouse going slow and jerky. They have been working perfectly fine for the past year but only recently started to play up. I have gone into bluetooth prefs and deleted them and re-connected, this seemed to be a temporary fix but after a while it started again, although not as bad as before. I usually leave my Mac on all the time and just put it in sleep mode, the issue now seems to be waking it from sleep as well. I have tried restarts and re pairing as i said before but nothing seems to be solving the issue. Any ideas or fixes would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • I have an issue with my trackpad and mouse at times where when I try to click on an icon and drag it somewhere, it wont drop. What causes this?

If I click on an icon or really anything for that matter and then try to drag and drop it, it wont drop. I have to press the esc key in order for it to drop. It only happens here and there. It stops happening randomly.  What would be causing this? Any help would be great. It doesn't matter if its on my trackpad or a connected mouse.

Which os version are you using?
Solution may be found if you search in the "More Like This" section over in the right column.

  • Mouse pointer lag (trackpad and mouse)

    Hi all,
I recently purchased a MacBookPro 13 inch for my work. It's the i7 version wth 8 gig of ram with mountain lion installed.
I have some major problems with both my mouse and my trackpad. The cursor has a lot of lag, it kind of make stutter and jumps. I tried multipe input devices and also on different computers. First I thought it was the mouse, but even the trackpad has the same problem! Should I bring back my laptop? I can't work like this.
I figured out that whenever there is some IO happening, the lagging will get worse. I tried a wireless mouse, wired mouse . . . nothing helped.
    Anyone here got a solution?
    Thanks

I have the same problem on my iMac using a usb wired mouse.  The mouse worked fine with Lion, but the pointer is "sticky" with Mountain Lion.  Seems to work fine for a while after a reboot or unplug/plug cycle of the mouse, but after a day or so the problem returns.  I have been searching here for a solution, but have found none yet. Sounds like a software issue that Apple needs to find and fix.
Otherwise, have to treat my Mac like a Windows machine and do a daily preventive reboot...

  • Dead Trackpad and Mouse

When I started my TiBook this AM, the mouse was frozen. I couldn't move the arrow nor click anything using the trackpad or button. Plugging in a USB mouse worked fine. And working this way for a while would be alright. Except, I think my kids want their mouse back.
I saw that, under the iBook discussions, people said this was symptomatic of a bad or disconnected trackpad cable. Consequently, these questions:
    1) Does anyone think it is likely to be anything else, like a dead pad/mouse combo?
    2) Does anyone know where to find instructions on how to (a) find the cable or (b) replace the pad/button? The iBook crowd had posted links to some for an iBook. When I looked at pictures of the insides of a TiBook, they looked too different for me.
This is my back-up machine. My regular PB won't take a charge from a power supply. So, I'm looking for any kind of help I can get to have one fully working computer.
    Thanks,
    Gary
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi g,
    1) Does anyone think it is likely to be anything else, like a dead pad/mouse combo?
The trackpad is an electronic part, and yes, it could have died.
The trackpad will sometimes not function properly due to software issues. I don't know if you've tried restarting, but that's the first thing I'd try. If no change, try booting from your install disc and see if the trackpad functions. If so, the issue is software related. If not, it's a hardware issue.
The trackpad ribbon on TiBooks has proved to be less than robust, but in most cases when there is an issue, it causes erratic behavior, it doesn't just stop working; still, you may want to read about the Orange Ribbon Cable Issue/Fix. If, in fact, your cable is actually severed, insulating according to the link isn't going to help, only replacing it will.
    2) Does anyone know where to find instructions on how to (a) find the cable or (b) replace the pad/button? The iBook crowd had posted links to some for an iBook. When I looked at pictures of the insides of a TiBook, they looked too different for me.
The architecture of each PB/iBook is different; have a look at the fixit guides for your model (which is it anyway?) at ifixit.com.

  • Trackpad and Mouse click problem!! PLEASE HELP!

I have been having this weird problem which is having to click several times on something of it to work. Mostly I have the problem with Safari and sibelius 6.0 which I work with.It doesn't click and its frustrating.I bet its not the trackpad as I happen to have a magic mouse and it's the same with that too.I have to click several times on for example "Close" the tab button for it to work.
    PLEASE HELP!

Kirstiee, login to another User account and test it in there.
sahba99, you would need to drag the whole preference folder to the Desktop and reboot. If it works, you know it's a preference file in that folder. Keep dragging a bunch back at a time and reboot (or log out and back in) until you narrow it down to the corrupt file. It's kind of like troubleshooting an extension conflict back in the pre-OS X days.
