Trackpad becomes unusable after about an hour

II've recently been having a problem with the built in trackpad on MacBook Pro. Started one day randomly with the trackpad lagging in the middle of the pad. Chatted to a apple worker and started up in safe mode and did a PRAM reset, both helped but didn't fix the problem, made an appointment for a well later and in the time it became unusable. So shut down and left on my desk for a few day, anyway the day of the appointment I boot it up before I leave and everything is perfectly fine. So I decide to cancel the appointment. That was almost a week ago and its started up again. Boots up just fine, alls fine until about 1-2 hours in when it begins lagging again, the longer you leave it the more it begins to jump, changing desktops, bringing the menu up, and in the end, needing to shut down and leave for a while. I thought it might be the hardwear, but if it is fine for a while then breaks, I don't know what's wrong with it.

  • System becomes unusable after a few hours?

    Hey archers,
I've been on arch for about 2 months now and didn't start having problems until maybe 3 weeks ago.  After a few hours of use, everything will completely (and suddenly) become really unresponsive: even an uncached ls or man takes upwards of 15-30 seconds.  Using strace, I saw the commands were stalling on IO operations (getdent64 for example), so I came to suspect my disk.  The odd thing is, it completely resolves itself upon reboot, at least until I leave the computer on for a few more hours.
About my disk: it's a Crucial 64GB SSD, / and /home are mounted with noatime and both partitions are at about 65% capacity.  I profiled the disk using dd before and after reboot the most recent time it became unresponsive:
    Before power cycle:
    andy@vulpes ~ $ dd if=/dev/zero of=temp bs=1M count=256
    256+0 records in
    256+0 records out
    268435456 bytes (268 MB) copied, 214.902 s, 1.2 MB/s
    andy@vulpes ~ $ sudo -i
    Password:
    [root@vulpes ~]# echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
    [root@vulpes ~]# logout
    andy@vulpes ~ $ dd if=temp of=/dev/null bs=1M count=256
    256+0 records in
    256+0 records out
    268435456 bytes (268 MB) copied, 426.4 s, 630 kB/s
    After power cycle:
    andy@vulpes ~ $ dd if=/dev/zero of=temp bs=1M count=256
    256+0 records in
    256+0 records out
    268435456 bytes (268 MB) copied, 3.01267 s, 89.1 MB/s
    andy@vulpes ~ $ sudo -i
    [root@vulpes ~]# echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
    [root@vulpes ~]# logout
    andy@vulpes ~ $ dd if=temp of=/dev/null bs=1M count=256
    256+0 records in
    256+0 records out
    268435456 bytes (268 MB) copied, 1.22105 s, 220 MB/s
Notice the magnitude difference in throughput speeds (Read 630 kB/s vs. 220 MB/s, Write: 1.2 MB/s vs. 89.1 MB/s), and this doesn't even really cover the disk latency I'm seeing.
Anyone seen anything like this, or have any ideas on how to fix it/debug it more?  The fact that it fixes itself after power cycle makes me think it isn't the disk itself, but who knows: a power cycle cycles the disk to some extent too (remount, clear caches, etc.).  My other thought is that it might be a kernel upgrade, but I don't remember if this started happening after I upgraded my kernel or not.  If it matters, I started using Gnome 3 about a week before this started happening.  I don't have much linux profiling-fu, so any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • After about an hour, FaceTime sound becomes extremelydistorted

My sister and I use FaceTime for long chats once a week.  After about an hour the sound suddenly becomes extremely distorted and unusable.  At that point we have to switch to Google Chat.  We prefer FaceTime--any idea what is causing this to happen and how to avoid it?  It occurs without warning.  I am on a Macbook Pro and she is on a Mac Book.

Just had this reply from Etymotic:
"It sound like a clogged filter. That sounds like an easy fix. Have you changed the filters? They will not appear to be clogged or dirty. he filters are designed to protect the transducers from wax and moisture. How often they need to be changed will depend on how much you use them and the amount of wax and moisture your ear produces. This varies considerably from one person to another. There are people that change their filters monthly and others that only need to change them annually. You will know it is time to change the filter when the volume of the sound is reduced, sound quality is reduced, or distortion is present. Sometimes if a filter gets completely clogged, the earphone can go dead very suddenly. You may want to have filters on hand to be prepared."
I've now changed the filters and will test the phones and iPod this weekend to see it the problem's been fixed!

  • After upgrading to 10.8.3 my Apple USB keyboard stops working after about 3 hours

    Mac Pro 3,1
    OS X 10.8.3 Server
    32GB RAM
Apple USB Keyboard works fine after reboot (typing on it now), stops responding after about 3 hours.
I see nothing in Console that looks like the culprit. Here is everything around the last time it happened - between 11:28 and 11:30 they keyboard just stopped working. Unplugging and re-plugging doesn't bring it back. Changing USB ports doesn't bring it back. Rebooting is the only thing that seems to work. Bluetooth keyboard works before and after.

Just a quick update with a couple more details before I go to work:
I left my phone plugged into the wall charger all night long but the Apple logo is still blinking on and off. However, when unplugged from the charger, the screen goes blank and the unit does not respond to pressing/holding the buttons at all. Likewise, flipping the mute switch does not cause the phone to vibrate as it normally would, which made me wonder if power was being disrupted somewhere else in the unit before the battery. I just finished disassembling the unit down to the battery, looked for any loose connections etc., and did spot a suspicious looking spot on top of the #5 ribbon connector that I had not taken notice of before in my first disassembly. I'll take a picture of it and post a link for your consideration later on today when I have a spare moment, although I fear the worst.

  • Track stops recording after about an hour

    Hi Everyone,
I am trying to record from some old tapes in order to create mp3s. The track stops recording after about one hour. The Tape is over one hour long. I read about a similiar problem in the forum and tried dragging the purple timeline marker to the right but it won't move any further. What is this called and what does it do? I also read about changing the sampling rate, but I cannot find where to do this. Where do I find documentation on this?
    Many Thanks for any suggestions.
    Regards,
    Bill

Garageband 3 doesn't record more than 1999 beats (GB2: 999). Since in your case the beats don´t matter, you can lower the tempo to the minimum (40 bpm) to get a maximum recording time of 3:18:48.
As for the sample rate: You can't change the export sample rate of GB, it's always 16 bit, 44.1 kbit/s (internally GB works with a higher resolution).

  • Audio drops out for about 2 seconds after about 2 hours

Hey folks....I've been renting HD movies, and I've noticed a bit of a pattern. Three times now, at some point just after about two hours the audio drops out for about two seconds. It's not exactly the same time - on one movie it was at 2:02:26 and another it was at 2:04:18. It's only two seconds, so it's really of no consequence. Just now it was during the closing credits (the music). Before, it was that scene in Batman where the two ferries are stalled on the river.
Of course, I would rewind to make sure. I use the optical out.
    Anyone else notice this?

Do a hard reset. Hold the power and home buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears.

  • I receive emails from an exchange account and from Yahoo the exchange acoount emails stay on my ipad ok but the BTyahoo ones disapear after about 1 hour. Can someone advise on how to stop yhis happening.

I am having problems with my ipad. I receive emails from 2 seperate accounts one exchange account and the other from BTyahoo.
The exchange account emails stay on the ipad but the btyahoo ones disapear after about 1 hour can anyone help.

    To follow-up with this issue:
I ended up performing a security wipe on my device. The security wipe finished, and I was about to reconnect with Exchange when I decided to visit our host's web site to see if they had any articles covering the issues I was experiencing. While they didn't have anything specific, I did find a step-by-step guide to connecting a BB10 device to Exchange... and right there at the end, it said "Do NOT enable memo sync."
I contacted support, and the rep told me that OS 10 has an issue with memo sync and it can cause all sorts of unpredictable behavior. Now, whether or not this is accurate I can say this: So far, the device is not disconnecting and reconnecting like it was before. Problem is, is this a result of not enabling memo sync, or is this a result of the security wipe?
I may have overlooked it, but I don't recall reading anything about that anywhere else. I'm tempted to try re-enabling the memo sync to see if everything blows up again. At least that way I can see for myself if the memo sync is a real issue. Of course, perhaps it's an issue with SherWeb (our host) specifically. Hm...
Anyway, for those that were interested, and for those that may come along in the future with a similar situation, the strange behavior that I first reported is no longer happening. I just don't know if it was a result of a security wipe or a result of not enabling memo sync with Exchange.

  • Why does my music pause after about an hour

Hi all. I am having trouble with my 7th gen ipod nano. After about an hour or so of listening to music, the device will pause on its on. I have to fully charge it again to solve the issue. If I do not fully charge it, I have to press and hold the ear buds into the jack to fix the problem. Oh and I am not using the original head phones. There seems to be a shortage of some sort. Please help.

    Hey Shamika,
If you are having an issue with your iPod nano stopping play of music after one hour and being unable to resume normally, I would suggest that you first attemtp to reset the iPod. See this article for directions -
Reset your iPod - Apple Support
    Specifically -
7th generation: Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button until the screen goes dark. The Apple logo should appear after a few seconds, then the Home screen should appear.
If the issue is not resolved, you may need to restore your iPod to factory settings. Use the steps in this article -

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Happy computing,

  • MBP logs itself out after about an hour

Two month old MBP 15" logs itself out after about one hour, although all energy settings are set to "never." I note someone else had the same problem (posted 12 Sep) but it does not seem to have been answered. This happens whether on battery or charger.

Go to HD>Library>Preferences>SystemConfiguration - find the file - com.apple.PowerManagement.plist - delete it to the trash and open your System Prefs>Hardware>Energy Saver and put your preferred settings in.
I had a problem where it would only stay at 'never'. By deleting and then resetting your settings a new prefs file will be created. See if that works.

  • IPhone 3GS becomes sluggish after a few hours

    Hi,
have my 3GS since one month now (it's a week 31) and now experiencing the problem that after some hours of usage/standby the iPhone becomes slugglish. This means that i.e. after pressing the home button to wake it up from standby it takes the phone about five seconds to turn the screen on. Using the iPhone is much more slower as well. When putting the iPhone back to sleep mode it will again take about five seconds when waking it up the next time.
I can fix this by rebooting the phone and the system will stay fine for about 24 hours. Then the error comes back. Having this since two days now. There was no software installed or updated since then.
    Anyone experiencing similar issues?
    Thanks

Thanks. However, I have never done so in the past and did not experience the problem.
BTW: Maybe other users are having the same problem as well, just found his here on the board: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2147538&tstart=0
...and in another forum: http://modmyi.com/forums/general-iphone-chat/674171-home-button-lockscreen-delay .html
At least the ones from the other forum are having problems with connecting to wifi in those situations as well.

  • PB 15" 1.33 freezes after about an hour

    Here's some brief history:
Just got my PB back from the shop today, after sending it in for a new logic board (VRAM error - posted about this one last week).
Set it up, everything worked fine -- for about an hour or so, then a complete freeze. I even had Internet radio streaming that sounded like a scratched CD or a broken record. About a minute or so after the freeze, I then got a loud fan-like noise that sounded like it was coming from the back left corner of my keyboard.
Did a hard shut-down (held down power button), waited about 2 minutes, then rebooted. Started up OK, ran well, then repeated problem about 12 minutes later. Wash, rinse, repeat: shut down, wait 2 mins, reboot, and this time it froze after about 4 minutes.
My suspicion is a problem in reassembly, possibly the techs did not properly apply the heat paste, and now the CPU is overheating and locking up.
I'm going to take it back to the shop tomorrow, but wondering if anyone has any advice or suggestions for things I can check.
    Thanks!

Okay, the temps seem to be running normally - indeed, the fan kicked on (a bit noisily, with a buzzing that was not there before sending it in to the shop), at around 142-145 F.
This time, my PB operated just fine for several hours, no problems. Processor temp never got above 147 F. So perhaps it is not the CPU overheating.
There are a few differences in how I had the PB running this time, however:
    - When it froze up yesterday, I had an additional monitor plugged in (I work best with two screens for all my apps and documents), as well as an external hard drive connected via firewire (that sits idle most of the time except for scheduled backups).
    - Last night (and today, as I write this, in fact), I am running the PB without any externals - no extra monitor, no external HD.
I ran a hardware check (AHT) and it showed no hardware problems.
I tried running some graphics-intense games while also having several processor-hogging applications, to see what would happen to the core temps, but again never got above 147F and no shutdown problems.
So my noob-sleuth techniques lead me to believe it has something to do with the extra video connection. I am going to try connecting the second monitor later today (currently using it with my standby PowerPC), and I'll report back with any new developments.
In the meantime, I'd love to hear any suggestions or ideas that come up from what new info (if any) I was able to provide.
And thanks for the help so far - at least I feel like I'm making some kind of progress!
