Trackpad click not working properly

Hey, I've had my Macbook 1.83ghz for like 6 or 7 months now and I haven't had any major problems up until now.
The Trackpad clicker has recently began to 'stick', it's hard to explain but it doesn't respond as it used to and it takes quite a heavy push now for it to respond, so it's pretty much impossible for me to drag files and work in Photoshop.
I did quite a bit of Googling to try and find similar problems but I only found this solution of using paper to fix it, which didn't work for me.
I noticed a recent post here concerning the recent Battery Update, I thought that might have been the problem I had but it seems it's not as I've just taken on the battery whilst running through the cable. Still getting the problem.
Thanks

Hi,
The best way is to phone AppleCare and ask (UK tel. 0870-876-0753), but otherwise, take it in to any authorised Apple repair centre.
Here's the UK retail store details. Try a search for Apple authorised re-sellers throughout the UK too, assuming that's where you are. All the official Apple retail stores, and all the officially authorised re-sellers (I think) can do the repair for you under warranty.
If you're outside the UK, search the Apple site for info for your area.
Cheers,
Rhys

Macbook Air Late 2010 model, 10.6.7, 2.13 4g ram. Trackpad is not working properly and in sometimes not at all. Need suggestions to resolve this issue?  I have applied all Mac updates and still having problems with the trackpad.

The machine has a 1 year warranty, book an appointment with your local Apple Store or AASP to have it looked at.
You can try doing a SMC reset however I don't think that is the solution.
    SMC RESET
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
    • On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-• Option keys and the power button at the same time.
    • Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Release the keys.

  • My trackpad is not working properly and my battery won't charge

Hi guys, yesterday my macbook probably suffered electrical shock and now my trackpad is not working properly, it's a bit slow and my battery won't charge. and also ethernet port is not working but wi-fi is , can you help me please ?

    Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
If this does not help, you may have to take the computer to the Apple store to have the computer and battery checked out.
    Best.

  • My trackpad is not working properly already. Is it eligible for replacement?

My trackpad is not working properly sometimes and it takes too long for my macbook to open

Whether your MacBook is legible for a replacement depends on the products warranty...
When did you purchase the product? Was it a new purchase or a second-hand purchase?

  • 2008 Macbook pro left click not working properly after upgrading to 10.6.8

I have a 2008 Macbook pro and a few months ago after upgrading to 10.6.8 my left click has been wonky.
Using the trackpad the left click eventually gets "stuck" or stops responding and I have to push it multiple times before it does anything.  I have tried plugging in a mouse, but when I do so the mouse also behaves the same way.  The only way I seem to be able to get the clicking to work properly is to restart the computer with the mouse attached.
I have seen threads about trackpads being messed up by swollen batteries, but my battery is brand new and looks fine, and the clicking problem extends to an external mouse, so I believe it is something with the preferences.
I tried deleting  com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouchTrackpad.plist   and restarting and the problem seemed to be fixed, but then after about a half hour it returned.
Having to keep a mouse plugged into my macbook is driving me crazy, anyone know a solution?

I started having the same issue after update.  I'm on a MacBookpro running 10.7.2
ICalled apple and they did a remove battery reboot, a reload lion and a option/command/R/P reboot on startup and then the computer started working.  Two days later problem was back.  I then did a reboot and the computer was back to working.  Today the computer worked fine tell it went to sleep.  I had to do a hard reboot to get the Mac up and running and now no left click.  Please help. I can not use the Mac  with the trackpad, a mouse, a Bluetooth mouse, or a digital pad. All so signs of left mouse click not working.  One other item when you go to pick your user at startup the left mouse click works.  Help!

  • My trackpad does not work properly

The trackpad on my macbook pro is not working properly.  Sometimes it right clicks by itself or if won't move around properly.  How can I fix this?

Check the Apple support page in this link:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1449
Sometimes a through cleaning of the trackpad will solve those issues.
    Ciao.

  • 13in. 2008 trackpad click not working

The physical click on my trackpad is not working. Cleaned it thoroughly, tried removing the battery (bloating) and that did not work. Any thoughts? Things I shoud try? Thank you.

With the glass buttonless trackpad that the model 6,1 Late 2009 has you need to have the Tap To Click box checked in System Preferences>Trackpad http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3211

  • MacBook Pro Trackpad Secondary Click not working properly - switching apps

I have a MacBook Pro 15" (new Core 2 Duo) with 10.4.8. On my main account, when I try and use the trackpad's two-finger-click to perform the secondary click functionality, I have a problem where instead of showing the secondary menu (same as control-click) it instead shows me the application switch screen (same as you see when entering command-tab).
I logged in under a new user account and enabled secondary click and it works properly -- so this appears to be either a conflict/issue in a plist (though I deleted the plist for mouse and keyboard and the issue still remains) or possibly with some other application/utility that is installed.
Without recreating my world one-by-one, any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Brian
MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 15" 2.33 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Using SOHO Notes, Yojimbo, StuffIt, and QuickSilver

    Update on the situation:
    1) Reboot in Safe Mode (shift-key down at start-up) -- secondary click still shows the application switcher.
    2) Ran Onyx -- Execute the defaults (no others) in the Automation tab and after rebooting the issue still persists.
    3) I removed the Microsoft drivers from my system and all plist files -- and reinstalled the MS drivers. On first use of the right-button on the mouse, I got the same "secondary click" response that I get with the trackpad. Before the uninstall it had worked correctly. I remember looking at the MS Mouse config options and it showed the right button performing a control-click. Now, with the preferences at their defaults from the software removal and reinstallation, I see there is an option -- and it is the default option, that the right-mouse button performs a "secondary click".
So it isn't a trackpad or mouse issue, it is an issue that somehow the default system behavior for a secondary click has been changed from displaying the alternate menu to showing the application switcher.
So the question is, what application or utility changed that? I was evaluating the Apple Mighty Mouse a few months ago and decided against it -- the right sensor seemed to fail often. Did that have an option to modify the secondary-click? I have Google and searched for tersm like ["secondary click" setting change modification hack, etc] and haven't seen any mention of that ability -- but clearly on my machine under my main user account, this is happening.
I hope that helps get one step closer.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Tap to click not working properly in Mountain Lion. How do I get apple to fix this major issue with mountain lion?

The tap to click does not work with mountain lion as it did before the mountain lion install. I purchased a brand new imac in August of 2011 and got a wireless keyboard and selected the wireless trackpad instead of a mouse.  The trackpad worked wonderful pre upgrade with tap to click. Now after the install of the newest beast, I have to actually press the trackpad rather than a slight tap. I have carpel tunnel and this is causing great stress upon my hand. How do I get apple to fix this major issue with mountain lion?

Perhaps, I was not clear enough.
I have an imac purchased in Aug. 2011 which came with Lion 10.6 (two uprades before mountain lion)
Recently, I just purchased a macbook pro retina with Mountain Lion
On my imac, my settings allowed me to "tap to click" everything EXCEPT the initial log in at the star up of my imac, again running Lion 10.6
On my macbook pro retina which has Mountain Lion, I set up the "tap to click" option, but notice that a "hard" click was neccessary when trying to click things. I thought this was a macbook thing (my first one) so I went and upgraded my imac to Mountain LIon, BIG MISTAKE! Now both my imac AND my macbook only have limited "tap to click" options. Before mountain lion I could "tap" to highlight and select text, tap and drag, and many other thiings that Mountain Lion has disabled.
I am truly surprised that no one has noticed this MAJOR issue.
Is there a way to uninstall this update, similar to how on a PC you can go back to a restore point.
On another note even the way PREVIEW has changed is less user friendly, there used to be icons on the bottom right corner of the screen, now I have to double tap and select the option I would like to switch between contacts and thumbnails. This is really annoying and is causing me time when reviewing files.
Just in case anyone was wondering, I did go to system preferences -> trackpad -> select tap to click
In fact almost all of the trackpad functions have been selected.

  • My trackpad is not working properly. It doesn't respond very well and only a very small area of it actually works. What can I do?

    Hi! Can anyone help?
    This is driving me insane.
I have a MacBook, which still works pretty well apart from the fact that over the last few weeks the trackpad started not responding very well.
I have to hit very hard and it only works on the bottom right corner.
It responds to me moving my fingers over it, the problem only happens when clicking on something.
I would really appreciate any tips from any of you clever people out there.
    Thanks

Does your MacBook have a removable battery?
If so, try removing the battery and running just on the power adapter. Don't do anything too important as the computer will power off if the power adapter comes loose! Just do this for a few minutes to see if your trackpad works any better.
If your battery isn't removable, run your hand over the bottom of the computer - or run a level over it if you have one - to see if it's flat.
In either case, it's possible your battery has swollen and is applying pressure on the connection for the trackpad, which in turn means the trackpad won't work as expected.

Instead of using execution statements involving
    synclient
on startup of X I'm now using /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf for configuring my settings. This solved the problem.
I realized by the way that in my former setup no matter how many fingers I used for pressing down the ClickPad it did always perform a normal click in addition. That is why the context menu disappeared right away: It performed a mixture of a right and left click.
@Head_on_a_Stick: No Problem, your attempt to help is much appreciated

  • Mouse click not working properly

I just bought a macbook pro last week. Since using lion, I have noticed a problem clicking. Such as opening folders, minimizing windows, clicking the back space button etc. I click on a few folders and they open, and then I try to click on another one and it refuses to open no matter how many times I click on it unless I unselect it and try again. It is not consistent to specific folders/icons, it just happens at random. It is as if the OS is not registering clicks consistently, like it were a hardware problem. Also my right click malfunctions at times and will either not work or will behave like it is the left click and vice versa and takes awhile to regulate itself.
Keep in mind I use both a wireless usb mouse and my trackpad and this is a problem I experience with both of them. I am using the latest version (10.7.3)

  • Cursor arrow gone from solid black to having white lines go through it and trackpad is not working properly in mail and adobe acrobat - anyone know how this could have happened and how to solve it?

Can anyone help me?  Concerned that I may have some kind of malware.  My cursor arrow and trackpad are behaving strangely,  The cursor used to be a solid black arrow but now seems to have horizontal white lines running through it.  The trackpad does not function normally either.  For example, when I use my trackpad to scroll up and down in mail  it sometimes works and sometimes does not.  In adobe acrobat it sometimes does not work.  In facebook, the cursor does not line up behind the menu keys as it should.
Any one know how this might have happened and how I can stop it?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
