Trackpad Clicking and Selecting

Hey everybody, been awhile, how is everyone doing?... My friend gave me her BlackBerry Curve 9360 and she asked me to find a way to fix her trackpad which doesn't want to click, but its scrolling and all works. I just want to know is it possible to alternatively select an item like in the broswer? The enter is not working. Thanks in advance :-)

First we need to see whether the issue is related to hardware or software. If it's a software problem, a battery pull should resolve it. Remove the battery while the phone is powered on then replace it a few seconds later. If that fixes things, you're welcome. If not, read on.
If it's a hardware problem, there's nothing we can do about it here. The phone will have to be taken to a repair shop for repairs. Be aware that this can get quite costly so you might find it a better idea to get another phone. There are some good deals online if you look around.

After breaking the trackpad in my early 2008 MBP I replaced it.
Upon startup the trackpad will click and select but will not move cursor... I have tried all system resets short of wiping and reinstalling OS.

Because the click has to deal with a physical button press while the movement has to deal with the trackpad detecting the movement of your finger on it.
Just for giggles, if you hold down the Option key on bootup and get to the boot menu on it, does the mouse work then? If so, then it's an OS issue (could be a setting or some .plist that's jacked up.

Try this ... reboot your Mac and see if double clicking works again.
Also, you can just select the Application you like to open and hold down the Command+O to open.
Also, did you check your setting for the mouse in system preferences.

Right click and select "Get Info" is SOO SLOW

Whenever I try to edit any of my songs or videos by right clicking and selecting "Get Info" it takes eons before the popup window appears. I am accessing my library on a secondary internal WD Caviar SE16 SATA 500gb drive. My 7yr old PC was somewhat slow, but this is ridiculous.

Are you running the latest version of iTunes? Is this a recent thing that's happened?

Dictionary not scanning words by hovering. Click and select now needed?

Before 10.6 you did not need to click and select text to look up a definition. If you just hovered the cursor over a word and typed cmd-cntl-D then the dictionary popup appeared with a definition. By continuing to hold down the cmd-cntl key and moving the cursor along the sentence, the panel followed, recognising each word and providing a definition. I used this a lot to read Chinese websites as it was able to recognise Chinese words and phrases well. Now to look up anything you must select the text, lookup the word, and then select the next text. With Asian languages the word-breaks are not obvious, but the dictionary in 10.5 was able to parse them perfectly. This is a major degradation in functionality, going from an elegant, powerful translation to a clunky non-existent one.
Some people report still being able to get dictionary popup *without selecting* the text - by hovering over it - HOW? Thanks.
BTW using right click is not the point, before 10.6 the dictionary tracked the mouse cursor without any clicks being needed. Thanks

Thanks Carolyn. No it was not Tool Tips. This was a functionality of the pop-up panel of the dictionary, that allowed it to break sentences down into words and then move along a line of text translating as it went (tokenising). The Mac has powerful tokenisers built into Cocoa (I programme with them) but seems to have disabled this functionality in Dictionary 10.6. Probably something got left out in the 64 bit re-write...
I had done a clean install so prefs were default. Tried deleting and no help.
I have noticed that the whole way Services are implemented in 10.6 is different. Before, all Service menu items were always on the menu, now the System tries to double-guess whether you need them or not, and the items on the menu change with the context. So another broken thing is that there is a Service to translate between simplified and traditional chinese. Now the System will not show the menu item if it thinks text is not in one or the other (and gets it wrong a lot). Before, you could select the service and if it was already in the right format the text stayed the same - it was a neat way to look see if there was a Traditional variant of some Simplified text. Problem now is that the code hiding the menu item is getting it wrong and wont even let you try.
Seems to me that they have tried to "simplify" the interface by getting the system smart, but not smart enough... please can the user be put back in control, leave our menu items alone ! I have submitted feedback to Apple. Maybe in 10.6.999...

Trackpad click and drag workaround

The click feature of my trackpad is broken. To click on a button I would tap, but to click and drag, I have no workaround. Please help. Thanks.

The one you mentioned is the "Two Finger Drag" I am asking if the "Three Finger Drag" would work for you or if you even tried it? It allows you to select a file and drag it anywhere. Even to another folder.
As a side note you mentioned your click feature is "broken?" Is there no physical click? If so you may have to check your battery if it is bulging and impeding the trackpad. This is a good start to take a look if your battery is the one physically impeding the trackpad.

When downloading a file, if I right-click and select new the submenu is not displayed

I have Firefox 12 installed; running XP SP3. Options/General/Always ask me where to save files is selected. If I download a file and select save file, I will get a save file to dialog. If I right-click in the dialog and select new, there is no submenu displayed. As a consequence, I cannot create a new folder in which to save the selected file. New will simply try to create a shortcut.

That Save As dialog that you see is part of Windows Explorer, including the contextual menu including "New". So, this sounds more like you may have a problem at a more fundamental operating system level, because Firefox (as far as I know) doesn't do anything, or even can, modify the content of the context menus of an Explorer window.
Could you provide a screenshot of what you see to make sure we're talking about the same thing here? Thanks!

Cannot Click and select in Mountain Lion Mail

Hi - Since upgrading to Mountain Lion on my iMac I am unable to select multiple mail messages to delete - I used to click and hold and drag down the list of bulk emails and click delete - this facility does not seem to work .... any suggestions??

Click on the first Mail item, then hold the Shift click the last Mail Item while still holding the Shift click Right Mouse then select Delete. If you want to delete say every other one, do the same but hold the Command [cmd] button.

Trackpad "clicking" and "highlighting," but I'm not clicking

As the thread title says, my MacBook Air's trackpad is randomly clicking on things and highlighting on things that I'm not instructing it to do. I've checked and I made sure that the "tap to click" option was turned off, so I don't feel this is user error. Anybody have any explanation or ideas?

Got the same problem when I opened my Trackpad preferences and turned on "Dragging" (underneath the Tap to Click box).
Turned it back off, which fixed the problem.
Though, I must click down the trackpad in order to drag, but I can live with that
Don't know if you all use those settings, but if you do, turn off Dragging until Apple releases a fix and it'll work all right
If not... Apple, somethings messed up with Tap to Click's Dragging function.

I just upgraded to 6.0 and links that want to open in a new window do not work. Right click and selecting open in new window does work.

Similarly clicking a link in email does not open a window. I can drag the link to Firefox and a new tab opens.
Also clicking Tools -> Add-ons does not open a tab as it used to.

mha007, Thank you. I walked through your suggested solutions and finally disabled all add-ons and restarted them one by one. The culprit seems to be ViewSourceWith 0.8.11. Interestingly when it is enabled I had to go to TaskManager to force Firefox to quit.
Maybe this information will help others. I don't know if the cache clearing etc helped but I would suggest that others start but Bringing up Firefox in Safe Mode (hold shift when you select the icon), disable all add-ons and then start them one by one.
Of course if you have ViewSourceWith maybe you should just disable it first rather than go through the tedium of restarting each add-on separately. To get to the add-ons when it won't open from the toolbar type about:addons in the address area.

Clicking (and selecting) the same JList item twice

I have a JList with items (Strings) which should be added to another String when selected (clicked on). My problem is that when a user clicks twice on the same item it should be added to the result String twice. But a ListSelectionListener acts only when the value has changed, so when an other item is selected.
Does anyone know a neat (as high level as possible) solution for this?
P.S.: How do you assign duke dollars to a topic? And how do you give someone who replies those?

Thanks. I also already thought of adding a MouseListener, but I kind of wanted to avoid it. But it seems that it is necessary if I want to keep the selection.
The solution I have now, by the way, is that I set the selectedIndex back to -1 in valueChanged, so there is never any item selected.

FF 34 "Bookmark - right click and select the Star to bookmark" is extremely frustrating. No way to get to the folder, the scroll does not work.

When the bookmark window appears and I select "Choose" the window opens showing a few folders, but there is no way to scroll down to the folder I want to put it in. Clicking in the window only selects the folder nearest the cursor. How do I get to the folder I need to get to? The old way worked great, why it was messed with is beyond me.
