Trackpad clicking when I didn't depress it

Ever since updating to 10.7.3 a few days ago on my mid-2011 MBA, my trackpad has been registering clicks even when I do not depress it. It usually happens if I leave my finger in the same place for a few seconds - then it acts like I clicked it, and will highlight text/click links, etc. I DID NOT have this issue with any other versions of Lion. Also, I have triple checked my trackpad settings.
Has anyone noticed this and have you found any solutions? Hoping to avoid taking it to the genius bar, I'm in school and can't really afford not to have a computer right now.

You may have '''Switched ON Caret Browsing'''. press '''F7 (on Mac: fn + F7)''' to toggle '''Caret Browsing ON/OFF'''
* click '''Firefox''' button and click '''Options''' -> Advanced -> General -> remove
Checkmark from '''Always use the cursor keys to navigate within pages'''

  • Trackpad clicking when I don't want it to click

Just recently I have had problems with inadvertent clicking caused by my trackpad.  If I simply rest a finger on the trackpad for more than a few seconds with only modest pressure, it will cause a click.  This is a new problem for me.  I have deselected the "click with one finger" option, but that doesn't help.

I have exactly the same problem. Anybody know the solution please?

  • I had a problem with my mouse double(multiple) clicking when I didn't want it to, now pressing enter in a window like this will close the current window and open one of my Taboo sites, and the cursor keys don't work.

This happens in any text entry window, but there is no problem with Wordpad or Word or other apps, just in Firefox. It's like the keyboard mapping has gotten fouled up in Firefox, but I can't find where I might check what is going on.

  • Trackpad clicking when not selected.

    Hello,
I bought my macbook pro in august and have had no problems with it until recently. Sometimes my computer will just click for no reason. this is very frustrating! It doesn't matter what i'm doing...surfing the web, or writing a paper. Sometimes it will go on for 5 minutes, or just randomly do it. Is there anything i can do to fix this? It also seems that at times the mouse doesn't want to move.

I have exactly the same problem. Anybody know the solution please?

  • Question for Apple: When do we get "Trackpad Click" in Boot Camp???

Parallels has it. VMWare Fusion has it. Why can't Boot Camp do 'trackpad click'???
I'm buggered if I can work out what was actually UPGRADED in BC 2.0 -- seems to work exactly the same as the beta versions.

    Question for Apple
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html/
And FWIW, I hate trackpad click. Whenever I try to help someone on a laptop which has it on by default, I end up clicking on everything when I'm only trying to move the mouse pointer. So I'm ecstatic that Apple is smart enough to turn it off by default. But I agree that people who have been trained to use this horrible feature ought to have it as an option. But I'm hoping Apple provides the option of focus-follows-mouse for Mac OS X first.

  • Loud Click when I press the right half of my trackpad mouse button

    Hello,
I have been using a macbook for the past year, and just recently I get a very load metal on metal click or crunching noise when I press the right side of my trackpad mouse button. I have removed the battery and looked behind to see the trackpad assembly and when I press on the corresponding side of the assembly it also make the same clack or click or bad noise. When I do the same to the opposite side there is no noise. My guess is that there is a spring on that side that has come undone, am I right? If so how do I fix it? I bought my laptop in the US, but right now and for the next few months I am living in Norway (no apple stores) is there a place where I can bring it to in order to get warrentied service? Will apple mail me the part? It ought to be fairly easy to fix. Thanks

I also had a trackpad 'click' problem ...my complete topcase had to be replaced. Although there may not be an 'Apple Store' in Norway, I'm sure there are Apple certified dealers there that can complete the repair. Here's a list of contact numbers...

The repair itself (top case) should only take a few hours.

  • New 2011 MB Air 4,2 - Spurious trackpad clicks (many)

Hi, I just upgraded from my old Macbook Air 2,1 (late 2008) to a new 2011 Macbook Air 4,2 (13").
This new unit has the glass trackpad which acts as a button when you press it.
I have been getting a great many spurious mouse clicks while swiping over the pad, that cause me to inappropriately select files and buttons, accidentally pick up files and folders and drop them into the folder next to them, yadda yadda.
I tried the obvious thing, which is to go to "Trackpad" in System Preferences, and to uncheck "Tap to click."  All the current system updates as of today are indtalled.  I am still getting spurious mouse clicks when I have fingers on the trackpad, even though the underlying button is never depressed and hence there has been no "clicking" sound.  This occurs with even light touch, and is totally unpredictable.  It happens about once or twice per minute.  It's a royal pain.  Is this a known issue?  Or do I need to bring my mac to a store to have it checked out?
    Thanks,
    K

Just FYI, I was able to resolve this issue.  I took the Air into the Apple store a couple times, but we weren't able to figure out what was wrong.
Then, while at home, I tried fiddling with the trackpad for the umpteent time (I had tried this before but had not had any luck reproducing the issue).  This time however, I notived that if I pressed down vry carefully with increasing pressure, slowly on the lower edge of the trackpad, I could get the mouseclick to register without actually mechanically "clicking" the trackpad.  E.g. the switch could be activated without the mechanism mechanically registering a click.  I did not notice this was possible the first many times I checked it, because it is actually very hard to do intentionally and requires a *very* steady hand applying gradual increasing pressure.
Apparently, as one is swiping, moving the pointer, and doing various other maneuvers on the trackpad, in this situation, the trackpad registers spurious clicks. If the normal pressure on the pad varies a lot during daily use, you will occasionally get spurious clicks when just the right pressure is there on the pad transiently.
I went into the Apple Store to try this out on the floor models, and found that this was not possible on any of the floor models.  Once I showed this to the Genius representative, he agreed that there must be something wrong with the trackpad.  He said that in addition, there are some screws on the trackpad that can be used to adjust the "spring" or amount of pressure to apply to the pad before it depresses, which he could try to see if it helps, but he felt it was better in this circumstance to just switch out the trackpad, which he did.
Since switching out the trackpad, I have not had a single spurious mouse click so I am very happy with the change.

  • Trackpad click bar not working correctly after getting a keyboard replacement.

I just got my whole keyboard replaced two days ago due to a sticking "m" problem on my 2008 macbook pro.  They didn't replace my trackpad, but now, it seems that my trackpad clicker will only respond if I apply a lot of pressure to the middle of the upper edge of the bar.  If I click anywhere else on the bar, the bar is completely unresponsive.  It makes clicking and dragging nearly impossible. I once had this problem when I had a bulging battery, but the battery is fine now.  Could something have happened when they replaced the keyboard? It can't be coincidence...  Is there a home remedy?  I know they will want to replace it if I take it in, and my old maching has been off warranty for a while now.

Either a misalignment or a cable is not properly connected.
Since they just "fixed" the keyboard I'd say take it back as they most likely caused this problem.
If you want to do it yourself, iFixit could be particularly useful:

  • Trackpad Click / Mouse Click

After installing Leopard...if i try to use the trackpad click it will not work and it stops mouse click from working. Powerbood G4. The mouse click works until I try to use the trackpad click.

I'm having a similar issue with my MacBook 2GHz. I installed Leopard a couple of weeks ago, been working fine and just this morning, when using Mail, I clicked on a mailbox and it seemed to lock on it as if I was trying to move the mailbox but I couldn't drop it anywhere. I couldn't click on anything else, had to use the keyboard to save work in a few applications before restarting. Since restarting, my wireless mighty mouse works fine but if I ever tap or click the trackpad, mouse clicks become disabled on the trackpad and on the bluetooth mouse as well, forcing me to restart again. All is well as long as I don't tap or click the trackpad. Any ideas?

I know this has been solved as you reported, but I think you need to check with your e-mail provider. Did you also get this same e-mail on your computer? If you use the same ID for e-mail on computer and ipad, it should have appeared on both. It's very common spam. Check your computer to see if on it, the e-mail is in spam, or, if you deleted it on your ipad, check your recently deleted e-mails.
You might want to consider changing your password, though people sending spam, don't need it. My e-mail provider had me change my password, not because I was getting spam, but unknown to me, I was sending it!  (You'll still get some spam, though.) It's when you learn that you're unknowingly sending spam...that you must change your password.
    Hope this helps.
(Ss I was sending this, I just got an e-mail notification from the Nigerian... it got to my e-mail instead of going to spam.)

  • Macbook 1.1 trackpad/clicker disabled by beta 12 os 10.5.8

simple--trackpad/clicker has gone wild. clicks when it shouldnt and does when it shouldnt. works fine with safari 5.0.6 i have deleted, highlighted, dragged, downloaded, and just plain screwed up to hell and back 50 times a day for untold weeks plus reset every preference over and over till im ready to never get near ff again. if someone at ff had just been a little clearer about the extent of the trackpad issues...

Define "access the cloud". I can access my iCloud.com account on my 5 year old iMac at work running OS X 10.4.11 Tiger. I can download and upload Word documents and Pages documents in the iWorks section of my iCloud.com account.
What do you want to access in "the cloud"?
Snow Leopard would be your next system upgrade and you should be OK with the CS3 applications, and Office 2008. I cannot confirm that the other applications will work.
This is quite old, but take a look or Google the other applications to see if they are compatible with SL.

  • My trackpad click is not working correctly

    Hello
My trackpad click not working very well. the click only work when press in the centre area of the trackpad which make it difficult to click so now I enable tap touch to make click. I got used to touch tap but if you want to drag something it is annoying.
anyway, is my trackpad is damaged or software problems ?
how can I fix it ?
I don't have Apple insurance Can I bring it to the Apple store ? Can I buy AppleCare now ?
    I got the latest MacBook

If your MacBook was bought less than 12 months ago it's still under the 1 year warranty. You can only buy the AppleCare warranty extension before the original warranty runs out.

  • Trackpad click not as sensitive after service

Hi there, just had the logic board replaced in my mid-2010 MBP, and I find now that the trackpad click is not as sensitive, it works about 90% of the time, but the 10% is quite frustrating. Even with the audible click, sometimes it doesn't register, and I need to hold it with more pressure. Is this something that they could have modified accidentally during re-construction of the mac body after logic board replacement?

There are times when I can play with my 3gs for long periods of time without a problem.  Other times, it only takes a few seconds for the screen to stop responding.  Pressing the sleep (?) button on the top right a couple of times (on, off) brings it back on...  but only for a few seconds.  I'm wondering if iCloud has anything to do with this....  and/or the network connection.  I was thinking perhaps it fails when I'm no edge and not WiFi.
