Trackpad, Cursor issues

MacBook Pro circa 12/2009  - 13"
Just started.... only left side of trackpad clicks - when I type in documents and email the cursor moves .. For example if I try to type "the dog eat the cat" --- it will come out differently each time but something like  " he god act the"
Also when I try to move the cursor to cut and paste - it picks up everything off the page
when try to scroll down a page it - copies everything
alread reset PRAM
advice needed - trying to get this message was a great feat

Hi, I believe I'm having the same problem as you, Zaby, with the jumpy keyboard / letters / unexpected insertion points. Creating any document on my 2008 MacBook, including in email, I'll be typing and after a dozen or so keystrokes, the letters randomly fly to a line somewhere above and the sentence continues there. Sometimes this overwrites previous sentences (argh!) and sometimes things are suddenly highlighted and overwritten, gone! Spontaneous combustion. (Apple Z restores but it's a horrendously frustrating process.) Then I have to go to the lines above and drag the middle of the sentence back to where it started. And repeat.
There's no discernable pattern. I tried making the lines very short because it happens somewhere into a line but this doesn't always work due to the randomness. Maddening!
My thumbs stay off the trackpad.
When I brought this problem to the Genius Bar, they pointed out that I had a "Crackpad" (which I had figured was normal wear and tear) and told me there's a quiet recall of the cracked keyboard/mouse/trackpad part. They said this could fix the problem. If not, the next step would be repairs to some cable beneath the keyboard costing $500 -- some kind of shorting between the trackpad, cursor and keys type deal.
So the top of the MacBook was made new again (which also fixed my "white key syndrome").
Problem with insertion points persists... up to now?
I've been reading the Forums for about an hour to find suggested solutions to this issue not costing $500. The problem is not so well documented (that's why I'm going into great detail). Aside from reinstalling SMS (?) and PRAM there was no consensus on why this happens or how to fix it. HOWEVER I just followed a suggestion to go into System Preferences and click "ignore random input" in the Trackpad section. I also slowed down the keystroke rate and the repeat rate in the Keyboard preference.
Suddenly I'm able to type this at my normal speed without the flying letters! I know this doesn't work for everyone and I'm quite skeptical that this will last more than an hour. But if the fix was that easy I'll be thrilled.
cheers

  • Mouse Trackpad Cursor Issues

My cursor will randomly go ape for no apparent reasons. I used to only occur when I played starcraft II and used an external mouse connected via IR, however recently it has been occurring sporadically. I have reset my PMU and PRAM once before and that temporarily fixed it. I don't know what's causing the issue.
Also of note, if i boot into my windows partition it will still happen. It happens moreso in OS X, though.
    Thanks,

  • Magic Trackpad Cursor Jumps or Moves Without the Trackpad Being Touched

Magic Trackpad Cursor Jumps or Moves Without the Trackpad Being Touched.
Try turning off your Bluetooth mouse or other nearby devices, especially if you find the cursor on your screen jumps or moves without the trackpad being touched. The cursor may also act strangely when the trackpad is touched.
The closest I found to a solution was in an old support article from March 2009 (TS1449), but it was through pure luck and MacGuyverism that I figured out my wireless Mighty Mouse was still on, nearby and thought it might be interfering with the signal to/from the Magic Trackpad. Sure enough. Turned it off and the problem instantly went away! Turned it on and the problem came back. Not sure if more distance would make a difference, but I saw no need for both on my desk anyway.

I have the same issue, but my mouse is turned off. I put the pad off to the side just to make sure. I just tried removing my mouse from the Bluetooth preferences. I've never had trouble with the mouse jumping before, but I do with the Magic Trackpad.

  • My trackpad cursor freezes on my imac

Since downloading Maverick the trackpad cursor freezes periodically.  Does anyone know how to fix it?

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • HT203171 Trackpad/cursor erratic when MacBook Pro plugged in

I have had trackpad issues and have followed the advice of the community. For 3 weeks the Mac has been problem free. Today once agian the trackpad/cursor are acting on their own and it is now apparent that the issues happen only when the Mac is plugged in. I have a Apple AC adapter. Under battery power the trackpad is fine. Any ideas?

I had this problem when plugged in to a 3rd party power adapter but when plugged into my original apple one or on battery power seems to work just fine.

  • Windows 7 displays error message when exiting +cursor issue

Two issues here. CS5 Phoshop on Wind 7 64 bit.
    Physical processor count: 8
    Processor speed: 3073 MHz
    Built-in memory: 12279 MB
    Free memory: 9577 MB
Memory available to Photoshop: 10934 MB
Memory used by Photoshop: 80 %
    Image tile size: 128K
First issue is since the latest automatic Adobe update (why fix what isn't broken?) Every time I now exit Photoshop I get the message "Adobe QT Server has stoped working" and occasionally it happens when I exit bridge. Indesign is also behaving badly. I can no longer start a previous document from file manager without ID crashing out.
The other is the cursors in Clone and erase lose their edge (become invisable) for no reason - well not quite. Noise Ninja crashed Photoshop when I tried to use it. I reinstalled it and all is well. The cursor issue seems to be intermittant but came back (for no reason) after I reinstalled NN. I can't seem to change the cursor, no matter what I do. The problem is now seriously affecting how I work. Almost enough to go back to Win XP which ran CS5 Photoshop flawlessly.
Any help will be gratefully accepted.

The recent problem is the entire outline of the cursor (including the crosshair in the middle) was missing at any size of cursor. All I had was exactly what I'd get if I used a real spraygun.
Well, that issue is simply a matter of hitting the Caps Lock key.  When Caps Lock is on, you'll see the cursor outline, and when it is off you'll see a crosshair.  That's a feature, not a bug.
Glad to hear the 11.1 drivers are out.  I will download them and try them now myself.
Regarding "Adobe QT" crashing...  QT brings to mind QuickTime, though that is Apple, not Adobe.  Do you have Apple QuickTime installed?
Regarding memory usage, with 12 GB of installed RAM, you should be able to set Photoshop to use 90% or more in Edit - Preferences - Performance.

  • Different cursor issue in CS4 and Window7 x64 Ultimate....

My first post, as I am frustrated and looking for help. I am seeing  three ghostly cursors (pointing hands or fists), when I mouse-over some choices  in PS4 (11.01, the latest version); like the selections at the bottom of channels or when "transform"  is active.
I have built a few PCs and have been doing computers since the  early 80's. This is pissing me off! I've tried everything and done a lot of  research.
I have Windows7, 64 bit Ultimate, with the latest updates. I have a  almost new MSI (Nvidia), 9800 GT graphics card and fancy dual monitors. Photoshop PS4 (version  11.01), and... what else? A PC that was not giving me issues (in  Photoshop), till I loaded Windows7!
I tried installing the latest Nvidia driver, 196.21, many times.  The last time I saved the files in the nvidia folder in the program files area.  The last time it took longer and my screen flashed and it said it was installed  (but it always says it is installed), and after that no change in the Windows driver specifications. It still says I  have the old Nvidia driver, "8.17.11.9621" What the hell kind of number is that?
I cannot get the 196.21 driver to install. Windows says I have the  latest.
Now, I have read about people with partial cursor issues in PS, but nobody  with my problem. Such a pisser that you don't know if it is Nvidia,  Windows7 or Photoshop.
Lastly, I tried turning off "Enable OpenGL drawing".

The 3 cursor problem could by this advice supplied recently by dec9.  "You have your computer Display settings set higher then 100 DPI. Change it to 100 percent or lower."  That worked for the other poster.
I have seen posts that stated user had to go in and "scrub" out the old drivers as an update was just not overwriting the old one completely.  Not a computer geek so hope this helps.

  • Mouse cursor issues (changes back to arrow)

I keep having this annoying issue with the cursor of my mouse. It works just fine for a while, but after few hours (usually working with PS, Illustrator etc.) there is this thing happening - if I want to resize a window, an Illustrator object, or if I move the cursor over a hyperlink - cursor changes from an arrow to a hand or whatever desired sign - but just for a second and goes back to arrow! It is highly annoying. :/
Idk the source of this problem, but I might add that I once installed a patch for Yosemite, which changes Helvetica system font for Lucida Grande. I uninstalled it though...
I use the latest MacBook Pro 13-inch with Yosemite.
    Many thanks.

    Same problem.
    My setup:
    MBP running OS X 10.9
    Apple TV running 6.0 (6646.65)
    Samsung HD TV
It's only happening when I have mirroring turned on (not extended desktop), and when I have the mirrored resolution set to match the TV. The TV has a larger viewing area than my Macbook Pro. My MBP screen resolution is set to "Scaled: Best for retina"
This started happening after the update to Mavericks.
    EDIT:
This solved it for me: I had Air Display running in the background, and the new version of Air Display automatically tries to connect to devices when it's running. My iPad is out, and I think Air Display might have been trying to connect to it. I quit Air Display and the cursor issue is gone.

  • Cursor issues in Word and Outlook after Adobe 9 pro trial download - any advice  - really annoying!

Hi, have downloaded Adobe Professional 9 as a trial and am looking to buy it (work with a charity). Did use Foxit phantom Pro and had no issues much considering its a cheap copy, but had to change to adobe so it was compatible with a colleagues system.
So heres what happens, i can now only navigate in a word document using the cursor arrows on my PC, can not click with a mouse in a document to change location or use the scroll on the RHS of the screen, can only scroll down with the cursor keys. Same issue in Outlook documents.
    Getting very annoying!
can also only highlight text for copy and paste using arrows and shift - not mouse click hold. have to then cut and paste using edit not RH mouse click.
I run windows vista home and office version 2003,
help or i'll have to go back to foxit!
    thanks,
    Georgie.

    Hi and thank you!
I had a trial of Adobe a year ago, maybe more. It did the same thing then i remember. Then i bought the Foxit subscription and completely got rid of adobe and the cursor issue went away. I am 100% sure it was the Adobe download that did it.

  • HT6114 TRACKPAD CURSOR PROBLEM

Bought a new 15" MacbookPro Aug 2013.  From start, probs with cursor moving & adding,e.g. end of  word somewhere else in text. Last time Apple replaced top case.  Sympton:  "trackpad cursor not tracking properly"  I still have same problem with trackpad cursor frequently but unpredictably moving taking the remainder of the word, paragraph with it.  It does this in every program, mail, safari, notes, pages.  it also does this when I'm dictating but you can only see this on the computer screen as on the iphone you can't monitor how the speech recognition process proceeds as it tries to figure out what was just said.  (I just corrected one of these errors which just occurred.)
I've been in at least 4 times since august 2013.  They just replaced the topcase which I thought would fix the problem since that means the cursor was replaced as well according to the people at the store I talked to.
    HELP!

So did my sister who also just replaced her macbook pro but when they replaced something on her having to do with the cursor, it now works.

  • Toshiba Laptop - cursor issues

Hello - I have a Toshiba C55D-A5120, serial # XXXXXXXXX. The issue began today: I open the laptop, enter my PIN, the screen opens normally, but the cursor freezes. I have to exit via the Task Manager. This is the first problem I have incurred.
Thank you for your time and help. --- Chrisanne
[Moderator edit to remove serial number.]

    Hi Chrissane!
I have read some posts about cursor issues. You can try doing a power cycle by removing all power by removing everything connected to the laptop then turn it on pressing F2 immediately and it goes to a setup screen where you can hit defaults by pressing f9 then enter and f10 to save and exit. after it restarts, log in with your pin then once you have your desktop back, press f5 only once then wait for atleast 30 seconds and try your cursor to see if its works already. Hope this helps! Have a great weekend!

  • Cursor Issues with Snow Leopard

I am having two cursor-related issues with my mid-2010 MBP, running 10.6.7.  Both problems are intermittent and occur with either the built-in trackpad or the external Magic Trackpad.
Problem #1:  Cursor movement is normal, however if I attempt to click on a window to bring it to the front, or click on the red button to close a window, or click on a menu item, nothing happens.  Short-cut keys work normally.  Application Switcher works normally.  Thus far, my only solution is to Shut Down the computer and then re-Start it.
Problem #2:  After a short absence from the computer, I could not find the cursor.  Using the Control 2-finger Zoom, I determined that the cursor was at the upper-right corner of the MBP screen (I do have a second monitor.)  Realizing where the cursor was, I tried to move it.  The cursor would only move away from the corner by less than an inch and then would snap back into the corner.  I performed a Shut Down (could not get to Restart) and Start, which resolved the problem.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

Another update and an easier work-a-round.
Both problems appear to be "solved" by unplugging the USB cable to my Apple keyboard and mouse.  At that point, I do have control from the MBP trackpad.  If I re-plug in the USB cable, things go back to normal.
My configuration is:  an external keyboard and mouse (not normally used) connected to the MBP by USB cable (this is the cable that I have to disconnect); and a Magic Trackpad connected by Bluetooth.
The work-a-round of disconnecting the USB cable is simple enough, but I am still interested if anyone has thoughts on what might be causing the issue in the first place.
    Thanks again for any suggestions.

  • Trackpad/Cursor behaving irratically?

    Hello there!
I seem to be having issues with my 13" Macbook Pro. My cursor is moving/jumping all across the screen and has become unresponsive. I'm not sure if this is a trackpad issue or not. I have tried everything I have seen on the internet. It started occuring last night so I have shut it off, restarted it and unplugged the charger. Left it overnight shut off and turned it on this morning with no luck. I have reset the PRAM (Command+Option+r+p+), restarted it, went and threw my install DVD to repair permissions and what not. None of this has worked! I did go into my settings and turned off all track pad functions. Somewhat fixed it but the cursor is still being a problem as I type this. I also wiped off the trackpad to see if that helped. Now I am here asking for help. Can someone shed to light on anything else I can attempt to solve the problem before I take it to my somewhat local Apple Store?
I need my computer to complete homework assignments and projects so a fast fix would be fantastic!
    Thanks,
    Brock
